Most people want to have a career of some kind to make money, however, the ways people go about it can be different. The way most of us are familiar with is being an employee. The employee operates on the expectation of income then performs to achieve that expectation.

People who work for a paycheck, bonus or profit sharing plans, perks etc. are shown the promise of what seems to be wealth at the time then work hard to achieve it. They wouldn’t consider doing a job for free. These are most of the people we know, likely ourselves at some point, first getting a degree, then getting the job, then a raise, then a better job, then trying to get a promotion; always motivated by the paycheck or getting a bigger paycheck, higher degree, a bonus or promotion of some kind. That is what we learn. It’s taught everywhere, from kindergarten to grad schools and definitely in big business.

So if you take away the incentive, the paycheck, the bonus, the granting of the degree, what is the motivation to press on? With this kind of expectation there is none. An employee is in always trading precious time for money, minute by minute, hour by hour, day by day until they retire and hopefully with enough money saved so they can pay their way until the end. They see no other way.

This is not a condemnation. It has served human kind for a long time and great improvements in lifestyle and health were gained this way. It works for many people, or is it that they have not considered a different approach?

Being an employee is a fairly easy way to live. It’s a very well known way of life for about 95% of us. Just follow someone else’s plan. But never call your own shots; don’t have a say in when you work; work overtime for free if you are salaried; or have the threat of losing your job if you and your boss don’t get along.

The more we get involved in this the more we are dependent on it. Just think, if you are the president or high official in a company, that company needs you and needs you on their terms. This could be in the middle of your daughter’s piano recital or on a family vacation. You are probably making a large salary and have expenses that compliment that, BIG. What happens if you lose your job? Yikes! Suddenly you need to sell the boat and sell the second home (if you can).

You also see some employees that will not perform if the boss is away, or if they feel like they aren’t getting paid enough. On the other hand there are bosses that will only do the bare minimum to keep employees happy thinking that they are a commodity or not worth the effort.

Sure, you can love the work you do but maybe you don’t want to do that much of it. Maybe you want some more time for yourself. Maybe you want to be able to have more of a say in when and where you get the job done. Maybe you’re not into face time and sucking up to the boss. Maybe you are tired of working for money, trading your time for dollars. Or maybe it suits you just fine. If so, you’re very lucky.

If not, would you consider an alternative? There are alternatives and people who succeed in their own leveraged businesses don’t have to trade time for money any more. It requires more effort in the short term but in the long term the benefits can far surpass the effort.

A dental assistant is basically an extra set of hands for the dentist or dental surgeon. However, the term “expanded functions” also means that under the law a dental assistant is forbidden from doing certain things such as: examining, diagnosing or planning dental treatment; cutting any hard or soft tissue; prescribing medicines, drugs or lab authorizations; performing pulpotomy, pulp capping or any other endodontic procedure; performing final placement of fixed or removable dental prosthetic appliances; administering anesthesia; and taking impressions other than those intended for diagnostic casts and study models.

Whatever a dental assistant is authorized to do under the banner of expanded functions has to be done under the direct supervision of a dentist or in a dental facility; meaning that the dentist himself has to diagnose the patient’s condition, prescribe treatment and authorize the procedure, and remain in the dental office as the expanded function dental assistant directs the procedure. The dentist is required to evaluate the work performed by the dental assistant before the patient is dismissed.

Many people think it would be nice to sometimes work at home. For the most part, they’re probably right. There’s something nice about being able to work at home. But not everyone wants to give up their current job to do so.

If that describes you, take a look at your job. It might be suited to partial or full telecommuting. All you have to do is convince your boss.

Easy to say, but unless the company you work for already has a telecommuting policy, probably not so easy to do. You’re going to have to convince someone that it’s a good business decision.

This means research. You want current information on why allowing employees to telecommute is a good idea. The general kind of thing you want would be things such as increased productivity and lowered costs to the business. You don’t want to talk about the advantages to you personally. Those aren’t important to the business.

You will also need to think about how often you would like to telecommute. Once a week? More? Less? Just occasionally, when the need arises?

How to Become an Air Force Flight Engineer

I’m looking at going into the Air Force as a Flight Engineer. Is there anything you would recommend to me? Or more generally anything about the job I should know? I just wanted to get the opinion of someone who has been through it.

I assume from the way you worded your question that you are not yet in the Air Force. If so, you cannot join right into the flight engineer career field. Air Force Manual 36-2108 (Enlisted Classification) spells out the requirements necessary to gain entry into any AFSC (Air Force Specialty Code … job) that the Air Force offers. Page 111, Paragraph 3.5.2.2. states that, in order to be eligible for entry in the Flight Engineer career field (1A1×0), you must possess a prior 5- or 7-level skill qualification in either of the In-flight Refueling (Boom Operator - 1A0×0), Aircraft Loadmaster (1A2×0), Airborne Mission Systems (1A5×0), Manned Aerospace Maintenance (2Axxx), or Missile and Space Systems Maintenance (2M0×0) career fields, or possess a valid FAA Flight Engineer Certificate, FAA Pilot License or valid FAA Airframe & Power plant license or Aircraft Maintenance Technician license.

There has been talk about opening up the Flight Engineer career field to “first-termers”, but there has been no action taken as of yet that I am aware of. If you want to become a flight engineer, I would suggest you look at either the Loadmaster (1A2×0) or Boom Operator (1A0×0) career fields, and then retrain at the earliest possible time. Both are still aircrew and fly on the aircraft. I started out as a loadmaster, and then retrained to engineer.

You need to realize that the job of the flight engineer is to refuel aircraft, move cargo, etc. It is a job that centers on TDYs. Although, since 9/11 I’ve deployed more than gone TDY and staying in a hotel is now a treat instead of a desert brown tent. Again, you have to weight the benefits of a challenging job versus family separation.

The rewards go far beyond the tangible, however. At the end of the day you can see the end result of your work, you have moved your mission from point A to B. Since becoming an engineer, I have earned four Air Medals, two Aerial Achievement medals, and have been awarded the AF Outstanding Unit Award eleven times, twice with valor(getting shot at). My wife wasn’t thrilled to learn of that. Both events occurred over Afghanistan. I’ve flown 3 different aircraft and logged over 8,100 flight hours.

Making a good career choice is one I feel is very important. Today’s demands on the military are very strenuous. You can look up the job descriptions for every job in the Air Force via the regulation I previously quoted. I know this isn’t the answer you wanted, but you now have more information to take to your recruiter. This is obviously a career decision that is very important and will shape the future path your life takes. Please make sure you make an intelligent and well-informed decision.

I’ll be turning 18 next August and I’m pregnant right now. I was thinking of joining the Air Force sometime next year so I can have some sort of stable career to care for my child. I was thinking about joining in a career of information systems. Do you have any advice?

Answer. You will need to check with a recruiter to make sure you meet all the requirements for enlistment, as you have many more hoops to jump through before you are accepted.

Because you would be deployable at any time, you have to keep on file with the base personnel office, three different dependant care plans: Immediate, short term and permanent.

The immediate plan is for when the phone rings and they need you to come to work immediately. You need to have someone available 24-hours a day, to be able to take care of your child for short periods of time, up to a day, for the times you need to fill in for someone else who was unable to work.

The short term plan is for when that same phone rings; although this time you are being deployed for an extended period of time, anywhere from a week to three months. You need to have someone available and willing to take on that responsibility.

The final plan is the permanent plan: If the unthinkable happens, and you are killed in the line of duty, you need someone willing to adopt your child. This is usually a blood relative, mother, sister/brother, and aunt/uncle. Again, this has to be someone willing to take on this lifetime responsibility.

I know these aren’t things happy to think about, but they are required by military regulations, and you will be required to revalidate these plans annually. Most people choose friends and/or neighbors for the immediate and short term plans, and relatives for the permanent plan.

During the period of Basic Training and your tech schools, your child will need to stay with relatives. Your time and efforts will be devoted to learning your basic military and technical skills, and you will not be provided with any time to yourself for child care. In Basic, you will be under supervision 24-hours a day for six weeks.

Today’s IT personnel are the modern incarnation of yesterday’s administrative personnel. There are those who specialize in computers and network management, but the majority is your clerk/typists that fill the much needed administrative support role in every squadron. There are approximately 10,000 in the Air Force, of which half are regularly non-deployable due to a variety of medical problems or other constraints. This means that, when a deployment requirement comes up, half the people have to do twice the work. Yes, you will be deployed, and I guarantee it will be within months of getting fully qualified in your job. That means that you won’t have that much time getting settled into your first permanent duty station with your child before you have to hand him/her over to your short-term sitter and go off on deployment.

Every career field deploys these days. Some more than others, but everyone gets their time in the “desert”. Granted, of all the armed forces, the Air Force deploys less to the “hot” spots. The Army and Marines spend the most time in Iraq, while the USAF deploys more to support locations, such as Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the UAE.

You need to look at your finances and see if the pay scale will meet your needs. As an E-1, Airman Basic, with less than four months in service, you will be earning $1,178 a month (current pay, due to go up roughly 3% next year). After four months that pay goes up to $1,274 a month. An E-2, Airman, earns $1,427 a month. An E-3, Airman First Class, earns $1,595 after two years of service.

Realize the Air Force will provide housing (or the funds to acquire housing), so that will offset your monthly costs. Probably the single biggest “bonus” is that all medical needs for you and your child will be provided for while you are on active duty. If you stay in and retire, the current plan provides medical insurance for you and all your dependents for only $460 a year.

Air Force Flight Engineer Career Field

I want to cross train out of my current AFSC. Flight engineering is 1 of my options. Would you recommend this to someone who is married? Also how long is the tech school, and to what degree of difficulty is it? I’m a former Guidance and control troop, and I am presently an Avionic back shop instructor at Sheppard, so I have a strong avionics background.

The AMC way of life is vastly different than AETC. The AMC life centers on deployments. GAC goes just as much as everyone else. If you have a strong marriage and a good relationship with your wife, you can survive anything the military throws at you. My wife and I have been married 20 years. I was flying when we met and that is the only way she’s known me. She has stuck with me through lengthy separations and shorter ones.

Realize that the job of the flight engineer is to refuel aircraft, move cargo, etc. It is a job that centers on TDYs. Although, since 9/11 I’ve deployed more than gone TDY and staying in a hotel is now a treat instead of a desert brown tent. Again, you have to weight the benefits of a challenging job versus family separation.

I came in as a loadmaster in Basic. I cross-trained 7 years later and became an engineer. I don’t think the school was that hard, and that’s when the military was teaching it with a 50% washout rate. Now the schools are all civilian contracted, and it’s a kinder, gentler school. The contractors get paid for each student who graduates, so there is little chance you would fail, unless you just decided you didn’t want to do it anymore.

The tech schools last a total of 5 months: 2 months of BFE (Basic Flight Engineer school) at Altus (you can drive home whenever you want), and 3 months of TTU, depending on which aircraft you end up on. C-5s train at Altus, C-130s at Littlerock. KC-10s train at their home base Travis or McGuire. E-3s are at Tinker. There is a host of other aircraft, but I don’t know their particulars. You also have Combat and Water Survival School at Fairchild, and roughly six months training at home station before you become mission ready.

The rewards go far beyond the tangible, however. At the end of the day you can see the end result of your work, you’ve moved your mission from point A to B. Since becoming an engineer, I’ve earned four Air Medals, two Aerial Achievement medals, and have been awarded the AF Outstanding Unit Award eleven times, twice with valor (getting shot at). My wife wasn’t thrilled to learn of that. Both events occurred over Afghanistan. I’ve flown 3 different aircraft and logged over 8,100 flight hours.

Making a good career choice is one I feel is very important. I am currently on terminal leave, and making the transition to civilian life. Today’s demands on the military are very strenuous, and a change like this is one I wouldn’t suggest or take lightly. With the demands I am facing today, it would be very difficult to stay in for another 4 or more years. That’s why I’m retiring.

That is, understanding how people want to be treated by their manager. Here is a list of things that I believe all employees have in common when it comes to how they want to be treated.

1. Employees want to be valued.

Over fifty percent of all working Canadians that leave their jobs do so because they feel that they are not valued. Have you ever been told that you provide little or no value to the organization, been humiliated for making the wrong decision or been told that you are a liability to the company. If so, then you understand how important it is to be valued. Valuing people because they are human beings and the foundation of our company is reason enough to be ethical in our approach with people.

2. Employees want to be treated with respect.

Author Arnold Glasow said, ” The respect of those you respect is worth more than the applause of the multitude”. Many employees desire the respect of the people they work for. Respect is oxygen for the soul and when managers give it freely, it creates a positive work environment. Respecting employees gives them the freedom to perform at a high level and the incentive to work with excellence.

3. Employees want to be trusted.

My dad once told me that to be trusted is a greater compliment than to be loved. Although we as managers cannot control if employees trust us, we can control our actions toward them and we can give them our trust. While it is true that we can be taken advantage of, it is also true that trust creates the foundation of a strong relationship with our people because it allows for open communication, maintains confidences and focuses on shared goals.

4. Employees want to be appreciated.

Employees want to be appreciated for the skill and effort that they bring to the work place. Letting employees know that they matter builds their self confidence and self esteem to the point that they make decisions and take action because, they know it is right and needs to be done. As a manager, let people know that you appreciate their efforts. Publicly thank them at every opportunity and give them the credit that they deserve. As one of my mentors Warren Brent Carroll once told me, “people need to walk in the sunshine and not in the shadows”.

5. Employees want to be understood. A great inventor by the name of Charles Kettering once said, “There is a great difference between knowing and understanding. You can know a lot about something and not really understand it. The same is true about people.” As managers we can be quick to find fault with employees who don’t conform to our thought process or patterns that we know work. Sometimes our employees act differently because they have not had the advantages that we have had. As managers we ought to consider extending ourselves to them on their level and showing flexibility in our thought process. Our employees are creatures of emotions, just like us.

Format Of A Cover Letter:

First Paragraph

Third Paragraph

In the third paragraph you conclude the letter by expressing your interest and enthusiasm in the job and when and where the employer can contact you. Provide necessary information like your address, telephone number or email address so that the employer can follow-up at his convenience. Do not end the letter in a pessimistic tone but with a positive attitude as though you are sure of the employer wanting to hire you. Close your letter by always thanking the employer for his time and consideration, just like in any other business letter. Also, mention that references are available on request. Try to keep it short and simple.

Always remember to use good quality paper for a cover letter. Make sure there are no spelling, grammatical or printing errors and address it to the right person.

US Army, The Benefits of Joining

Given all the benefits, is army pay better than civilian pay? This is a very difficult question to answer. It will depend on education, experience, part of the country you live in, and the risks you are willing to take.

If you are a non-union, unskilled, blue collar worker who dropped out of high school, but has good native intelligence (passes a very challenging aptitude test) and a good work ethic, the military pay and benefits are better than you can get on the outside. If you are a highly educated, technically skilled worker with some experience, the military doesn’t even come close to paying what you are worth on the outside.

Most people do not fall in either extreme. There are also many other reasons to serve besides pay and benefits. And pay and benefits cannot make-up for the potential of major injury or loss of life, if you do not wish to give up some of your freedoms and offer your life for your country.

Every year the Army Times publishes a putative pay and benefits comparison for various jobs in the military, and their assumed civilian job equivalent. This might be a good article to look at for some insight to your question. Benefits are assumed at a high level, even if the military member never uses that benefit. Thus I am assumed to have a benefit advantage of being able to use military health care, the commissary, and the Post Exchange, to the tune of about $10,000 in savings a year (which the Army Times would add to my annual salary to inflate that number). However, I live too far away from a post to take advantage of these “benefits.” The cost of gas to get to post would far outweigh any reduced price savings I would get. So my actual pay and benefits is lower than the “typical” pay an benefits the Army Times claims.

When I lived in DC my salary did not go nearly as far as it does when I live in the middle of nowhere Alabama. A young PFC working in the Pentagon will find it hard to make ends meet, but the civilian secretary doing a similar job, with locality pay, will make far more. That same PFC at Fort Benning Georgia can live very well. It is probably better than the local business secretaries.

However, I have to admit that when you are in the military, you do not get to choose where you will serve, or when you will go to war. You
