Having a computer at home and being connected to the World Wide Web may be convenient, but it also posesses a threat to your computer security. Computer security can be annoying and devastating in the worst of cases. So it is important for every computer user to know the real score about computer security and the risks involved.
There are many destructive elements lurking on the net and many have been victimized by these vicious attacks. The most common attacks are from viruses, spyware and adware. These elements can penetrate your computer without you knowing it. The can be passed from users as email attachments, bogus links and websites.
In order for your computer to be protected, you need to take counter measures as early as possible. By having your computer protected before you get connected to the net, you can minimize and zero out infiltration from these harmful elements.
Basic To-Do Tips to Enforce Computer Security
Here are just a few basic tips to ensure computer security.
1. Turn on your firewall immediately after purchasing your computer and before connecting to the internet. This is a crucial step that you have to take in order to initiate computer security. Your computer’s operating system comes with a firewall; turn that on before anything else. Although a firewall may sound secure enough, you also need backup to strengthen your computer’s security.
2. Install an anti virus program. You can avail a free anti virus program from the computer retailer and then later replace it with a more updated and potent version from the net. Make sure that your anti virus program runs live every time you are connected on the net to allow regular updates. And download anti virus program/s from popular reputable sites.
3. Install an anti spyware/malware/adware program. You can also ask your computer retailer for a free copy and you may download from a legitimate site afterwards. Make sure the anti spyware runs live and updates regularly.
4. Avoid opening emails and attachments from suspicious senders. Usually spam emails send links, photos and other sorts of attachments that may carry viruses. Whatever you do, avoid these emails and delete them immediately.
5. Avoid surfing suspicious websites. Porn sites are usually one of the hideous carriers of viruses and adware. Avoid surfing from these sites to prevent virus or adware infestation.
6. Always scan diskettes, CDs and devices you insert to your CPU before accessing them. Devices that have been used from other computers could contract viruses and can pass them to your computer when you use them without prior scanning. Always remember to scan them first to be sure.
Computer security can be achieved and enforced but it should start from you, the user. It is imperative that you do check your computer from time to time and do regular maintenance management to ensure that your computer is free from these harmful elements.

A hard disk drive also known as hard drive or hard disk is a non-volatile storage device, which has the facility to stock up digitally encoded data on rapidly rotating platters and magnetic surfaces. Its design consists of a spindle which can hold one or more flat circular disks known as platters, onto which the data is recorded. It has the ability to store data more than floppy disk drives and can also access and transmit data at faster pace.
Today, the boost in disk space and access speeds of hard disk drive have further facilitated the marketable viability of clients products that need great storage capacities, like digital audio players and video recorders. However, the main problem that we are coming across is erasing data or files from hard disk permanently. Most of us think that erasing files and emptying the Recycle Bin will help in permanently get rid of those files. In fact, in most of the cases Recycle Bin tells that emptying the Recycle Bin will permanently remove items. But this statement is totally incorrect.
You have to understand even after emptying the Recycle Bin, the files can be easily recovered by data recovery programs. Making the best use of delete key on actually removes the shortcuts to the files and makes them undetectable to users. Deleted files still reside on the hard drive and a rapid Google search will automatically show options for system recovery software will further allow to restore that data. Apart from erasing the files or data from hard drive, many people also consider that the effective way to erase hard drive data is by formatting the hard drive.
Though formatting the hard drive is somewhat secure than just erasing the files, but you should also note that formatting a disk does erase only the address tables. It makes it much more difficult to recover the files. However a computer specialist would be able to recover most or all the data that was on the disk before the reformat. Disk Wiping is the next new technique that is gaining its popularity these days. Disk wiping is a new secure method and ensure that data, including individually licensed softwares on your computer and storage devices is irrecoverably deleted before recycling.
Disk wiping is better method in comparison to erasing files or formatting the hard drive, because this method basically overwrites your entire hard drive with data, several times and once you format your hard drive, you may find it impossible to get back the data which was present on the drive before the overwrite. Though disk wiping algorithms vary from product to product, they usually write the entire disk with a number (zero or one) and then a reformat is required.
Today, there are many products available in the market that you can purchase or download to perform secure disk wipes. Moreover, the three free programs that are gaining recognition for erasing data from your hard drive are:
(1) Darik’s Boot and Nuke: This is an application that you can install on a bootable floppy or CD Rom. Boot and Nuke uses several methods to wipe the data on your drive to an unrecoverable state. With the facility to delete the contents of any hard disk that it detects, makes this application a suitable utility for urgent situation data destruction.
(2) Eraser: This is next famous software and does a great work of cleaning your hard drive by removing all magnetic and solid state memory. It is an advanced security tool, which further allows you to entirely remove sensitive data by overwriting it several times with carefully selected patterns.
(3) KillDisk Free Edition: This software supports a variety of wipping options using advanced algorythms that pass NSA standards. There are both windows and dos versions available.
Now once one of these procedures is completed the drive is ready to be given away without fear of privacy invasion or fraud. These tools provide full confidence about your deleted sensitive personal information that is unrecoverable. In addition to this it also provide easy to comprehend and secure and affable graphical user interface GUI for permanent data removal.
Finally if you are still uncertain or want to ensure that deleted files are permanently gone, employ a file deletion management system. Today there are many file deletion programs designed to spot and permanently purge your computer of previously deleted files. These solutions initially scan a computer, find traces of previously erased data and finally remove discarded data including e-mail messages.

With so many of us online nowadays, it’s inevitable that criminals familiar with computer technology have found ways to take advantage of it to make money. The Internet is almost impossible to police, as it crosses so many international borders, and criminals can operate basically from anywhere there’s power and an internet connection. Phishing is just one of many schemes thought up by criminal minds to part us from our money.
Phishing is simply the scam of sending out a fake email in order to try and get the recipient to respond with private or financial information. You’ve probably received plenty of these - they pretend to come from a well known bank, tell you that someone has changed your password or that your account will be terminated if you don’t confirm your details, and give you a link to click on.
Of course if you do actually click on the link, you’ll be taken to a false website where the information you enter will be recorded and used to log in to your bank account or credit card and steal your money. In extreme cases, where the phishing attempt also gets private information such as your social security number, your whole identity may be stolen and used to apply for fake loans. Your financial and credit history can be ruined in literally hours, before you have any idea there’s something wrong.
How Do I Avoid Being Caught?
While this sounds terrible, there are things you can do to lessen the risk of your information being phished. The first, and most important, is to NEVER respond to an email that appears to come from your financial institution. It doesn’t matter how legitimate it looks, or whether it has the right logos in it. These businesses are well aware of the rapid spread of phishing, and the last thing they would do is confuse things by sending an email requesting your login details or for you to confirm a password.
If in doubt, call your bank by looking up the phone number - don’t use any phone numbers included in the email - and ask them if the email is legitimate. Never click on any links or URLs contained in the email, don’t reply to the email, don’t acknowledge that you’ve received it - just hit the delete button as fast as possible.
When you’re visiting websites, always be wary of supplying too much private information. Only supply such information if you’re sure it’s a legitimate site that you’ve navigated to by yourself, and there should be a locked padlock logo in the bottom of the browser so you know the site is secure. Never enter this kind of information at a website you’ve reached by clinking on an email link.
What Type of Phishing Emails Can I get?
Phishing isn’t just limited to financial institutions. Many phishing scams imitate emails from eBay and well-known stores. They may appear to be a special offer, suggesting you click on the link to get a great deal on that particular item. The problem is that you’ll end up at a website designed to steal your information, not the store’s website. If you’re especially interested in the deal being offered, call the store and ask if it’s a genuine offer before clicking on anything.
If you do receive a suspicious email that you think is a phishing scam, it’s always helpful to notify the company that it appears to come from. Some businesses have specific addresses for receiving phishing notifications, but many simply use postmaster@theirURL. PayPal can be reached via spoof@paypal.com. You can also report the scam to the Internet Crime Complaint Center, although this mainly deals with the more threatening and widespread phishing scams.
The important thing to remember is that you should never click on an email link without checking with your bank first. It doesn’t matter how dire the consequences sound if you don’t do it - that’s all part of the scam. The more vigilant we all are, the less people will fall for phishing scams, and the better the chance that one day these criminals will give up and leave our inboxes alone.

Have you tried (and failed) to remove those annoying pop-ups known as adware? There may be reason. You can manually remove adware components one by one, but there is a good chance you would miss some of them. Adware and other types of spyware often install in unusual places to make it as difficult as possible to uninstall.
The United States Computer Emergency Readiness Team (US-CERT) recommends running a legitimate product specifically designed to remove spyware. Many products now offer free downloads and trials.
Adware is considered a form of spyware, and can monitor and profile your web usage, send you pop-up ads, and redirect your browser to specific web sites. Adware can be installed without the user’s knowledge, and adware components typically install alongside a shareware or freeware application. While adware is not as dangerous as other infections, it can be incredibly annoying and invasive.
According to US-CERT the following symptoms may indicate that spyware is installed on your computer:
* You are subject to endless pop-up windows
* You are redirected to web sites other than the one you typed into your browser
* New, unexpected toolbars appear in your web browser
* New, unexpected icons appear in the task tray at the bottom of your screen
* Your browser’s home page suddenly changed
* The search engine your browser opens when you click “search” has been changed
* Certain keys fail to work in your browser (e.g., the tab key doesn’t work when you are moving to the next field within a form)
* Random Windows error messages begin to appear
* Your computer suddenly seems very slow when opening programs or processing tasks (saving files, etc.)
Because of the extra processing, spyware may cause your computer to become slow or sluggish. There are also privacy implications:
* What information is being gathered?
* Who is receiving it?
* How is it being used?
How can you prevent spyware from installing on your computer?
To avoid unintentionally installing it yourself, follow these good security practices:
* Don’t click on links within pop-up windows - Because pop-up windows are often a product of spyware, clicking on the window may install spyware software on your computer. To close the pop-up window, click on the “X” icon in the titlebar instead of a “close” link within the window.
* Choose “no” when asked unexpected questions - Be wary of unexpected dialog boxes asking whether you want to run a particular program or perform another type of task. Always select “no” or “cancel,” or close the dialog box by clicking the “X” icon in the titlebar.
* Be wary of free downloadable software - There are many sites that offer customized toolbars or other features that appeal to users. Don’t download programs from sites you don’t trust, and realize that you may be exposing your computer to spyware by downloading some of these programs.
* Don’t follow email links claiming to offer anti-spyware software - Like email viruses, the links may serve the opposite purpose and actually install the spyware it claims to be eliminating.
As an additional good security practice, especially if you are concerned that you might have spyware on your machine and want to minimize the impact, consider taking the following action:
* Adjust your browser preferences to limit pop-up windows and cookies - Pop-up windows are often generated by some kind of scripting or active content. Adjusting the settings within your browser to reduce or prevent scripting or active content may reduce the number of pop-up windows that appear. Some browsers offer a specific option to block or limit pop-up windows. Certain types of cookies are sometimes considered spyware because they reveal what web pages you have visited.
Whether you like it or not, spyware and adware are here to stay. A good monitoring and removal tool can be a useful asset in your fight against these invasive technologies.

Computers are an important aspect of many people’s daily lives. It used to be that people used their computer at work or at the library if they wanted to use it. Today most homes have one or more computers in them. Most users could not imagine no longer having this tool to help them in their daily lives. Computers are for work, pleasure and productivity. Unfortunately though, there are hackers, crackers and hijackers out there looking to expose your vulnerabilities for their own gain.
Hackers can hack into your computer for their own means, crack your passwords and hijack your homepage or hard drive and steal your personal information. Programs such as Spyware can be downloaded secretly into your computer and spread through your machine to watch and report your every move. Those who are under the illusion that their computer is safe from hackers freely chat, send and receive pictures, have instant messaging conversations about the very personal details of their life and probably pay bills online or shop for things online with their credit cards.
The programs that may be lurking on your hard drive could be sending reports without your knowledge out into a hacker’s e-mail account so that they can do many things including steal your identity.
Some hackers simply reset your homepage to a bunch of advertisements that they hope you will click on in order to earn them more money. Other programs disrupt your daily operations while your passwords and pin numbers are stolen or your family photos are downloaded to someone else’s machine.
You can fight back with Spyware software. A package such as spyblaster can clean your system and help prevent new infections by updating itself to combat the new threats that spread like wildfire through cyberspace on a daily basis.
If you notice any unusual activities on your computer, you may be infected. Some symptoms of a Spyware infection are:
-Slower than usual processes
-Pop-up advertisements
-A reset of your homepage to a different URL
-Unusual errors
Running a trusted anti-spyware software package that continually protects your pc and your privacy is as important as shielding your password at the ATM machine. You want to be assured of your privacy and the only way to effectively do this is by shielding your computer against these types of threats. How do you know you can trust your anti-spyware software? Choose a software package that provides support on an on-going basis and avoid freeware packages. Many freeware or shareware spyware software packages are merely spyware themselves, masquerading as a fix for spyware. Dealing with a package that will support you with on-going definition updates is the best way to combat this continuing problem.

More than one user has complained about finding unwanted material on their computer. If you are the only person who uses your computer and you know that you haven’t visited pornographic content websites, it can be very disheartening to find pornography on your computer.
The Internet is filled with information and just about anything you could want to buy or sell is available at your fingertips. Unfortunately, what you may not be interested in buying or selling might be being pushed in your direction because of Spyware. Spyware can be discreetly hidden in your computer files and could arrive by any number of methods not limited to the following:
-Email attachments that appear harmless
-Toolbars that you’ve downloaded to help you be more productive
-Java files for chat or file sharing
-Downloaded music, video or movie files
-Freeware programs for entertainment or productivity
And more.
If your browser’s home page has been taken over by banner ads or pop-up advertisements, if your computer seems to be running much more slowly than usual or if you’re receiving warning messages or annoying pop-ups you have probably contracted Spyware, Adware or malicious software (also known as malware, fakeware or badware) from somewhere. Running antivirus programs probably won’t catch and destroy these programs for you and won’t protect you against future Spyware or Adware worms.
The unfortunate truth is that up to ninety per cent of all Internet users have or have had Spyware on their computer at one time or another. Spyware can not only fill your monitor with annoying or distasteful images, but it can spy on your every move and report your personal surfing habits to outside parties who could be using this information to try to sell something to you or to try to steal from you in the form of taking your information and stealing your passwords, pin numbers and log in credentials to do damaging things.
Spyware can be combated. You can install a program to scan your computer for these malicious and intrusive programs. Spyblaster cannot only erase the existing spyware but can also protect your computer against future threats. Not all software programs are created equal. Watch out for fakeware disguising itself as freeware designed to help spyware problems. Ensure that your fight to rid your computer of harmful packages designed to spy on you or fill your monitor with filthy and offensive images isn’t simply going to result in more problems for you. Use a reputable tool that will be accountable for its actions.

There is no doubt that modern technology has proven to be one of the greatest tools ever developed for the benefit of mankind. Nevertheless, as it is with every technological development, the benefits of such advances bring along their share of risks as well.
Of perhaps greatest concern to all computer users is the safety and security of electronic information stored on the computer. Everyone should learn to manage and protect the information stored in our files and folders from hackers, viruses and the like. This is of critical importance and warrants your immediate attention.
Why should you be concerned?
At some point, all of us choose to store some sort of sensitive information on a computer. This information could include bank details, tax returns, other financial information, corporate details, business facts, passwords for our online accounts, personal photos, videos, music files etc. You can understand, then, the importance of hiding and protecting your sensitive and personal files.
Identity theft is the most common concern for most people, and for good reason. Once a thief has access to just a few key pieces of information about you, it only takes a few keystrokes for that person to start wreaking havoc while pretending to be you. Cleaning up after such an incident can literally takes years of effort on your part.
Take some simple precautions
One of the best ways to keep the sensitive information on your PC private is to choose a security program that will help protect your personal files. For most computer users, the most viable option is to begin using software that is specially designed to protect and hide your files and folders. Simple to use but yielding high results, such software is easily available and is fast becoming the first choice of many users.
To hide and protect the information on your computer, you first need to analyze the options available to you. Do some research on the internet to find potentially suitable programs, or contact your local computer software store. Many internet suppliers of privacy and protection software offer a free trial version of their software, which allows you to test it out on your computer for free before making a final buying decision.
About trial versions of privacy software
Once you have found reputable software and downloaded the trial version, you can experiment with some of the folders on your PC. The best way to do this is to make one or two sample folders or files and practice using the options of the software on these. A trial version normally has a limited time period, usually ranging from 14 to 20 days, after which you must purchase the full version from the vendor in order to continue using it.

When was it last that you conveniently saved some personal pictures of yours into your computer? Did it ever occur to you that these personal pictures of yours could be open for public view, the very next minute?
The cyberspace is today full of minds trying to break through in to the safely stored information on the computers. In fact, there are people working round the clock to actually devise ways to get access to private information stored by other users on their computers.
Should you be worried?
Hackers have always held that special eye for laying their hands on the information most private to the user. On the top of this list come personal details, pictures and personal videos. Pictures saved on the computers have always been an easy target for those who know how to gain access.
If official reports are anything to go by, figures state that every minute, at least 8 out of 10 computers are under the risk of hacking. What is worst is
that the personal information such as pictures and videos are the easiest target.
Beyond all, as the photos and pictures are of an extremely personal nature, having them open for public view brings you a lot of embarrassment. It is quite an unpleasant feeling knowing that your personal photos or pictures are now easily available for millions to see. The anguish and helplessness you feel over being left vulnerable leaves you looking for a suitable solution.
What needs to be done?
Fortunately, help is not too far. The right is way to opt for well-designed software that can be installed on your personal computer to help you in hiding your folders. Such software allows you to select special folders carrying this information and protect from any unauthorized access. You can also have the facility of removing these files totally from all folders of your computer so that no one can actually see them.
Besides, the problem increases when you are sharing your computer with a roommate, colleague or even a family member. It often becomes difficult to apply passwords, which could be objectionable to the other users. It is here that the need for some settings arises which the other users cannot make out easily. In other words, other users just fail to spot any hiding software being installed on the computer.
About Privacy Software
There are special software packages available with features, which especially help you in hiding pictures on your computers. You can contact your local computer software store for some suitable options. You can also do some research on the internet for some offers. There are special trial versions available on the internet to help you understand the features of such packages.

Despite efforts to close security loopholes with Microsoft Internet Explorer, problems abound. USA Today reports in a recent article entitled, “Security risks swell for Microsoft’s Explorer”, that using Microsoft’s Internet Explorer Web browser to surf the Internet has become a marked risk, even with the latest security patches installed.
Other media outlets have followed suit. The British journal The Inquirer reported that the US Government has sent out a warning out to internet users through its Computer Emergency Readiness Team (US-CERT), pleading users to stop using Microsoft’s Internet Explorer. Furthermore, in a vulnerability note released by US-CERT, it says “there are a number of significant vulnerabilities in technologies relating to the IE domain” and that “it is possible to reduce exposure to these vulnerabilities by using a different web browser.” Well, they’re right.
So what do you do if you need to surf the Web and don’t want to use Internet Explorer? It may be time to give Firefox a try. Firefox is an award-winning, free Web browser from Mozilla, the folks who brought you Web browsing before Microsoft jumped on the bandwagon.
According to the latest release notes, “Firefox protects you from viruses, spyware and pop-ups. Enjoy improvements to performance, ease of use and privacy. It’s easy to import your favorites and settings and get started.” Specific adware and spyware prevention features of the latest edition of Firefox include automatic updates, pop-up blocking, and stronger overall security enforcement.
Supporting automatic updates, the new Software Update feature makes it easy to get the latest security and feature updates to Firefox. Firefox automatically downloads these small updates in the background and prompts you when they are ready to be installed. It is easy to forget to check a Web site to download new versions of software or install security patches.
If you have ever been annoyed by pop-ups, Firefox’s built-in pop-up blocker has been enhanced to block more unwanted pop-up and pop-under ads.
And speaking of stronger security, Firefox keeps you more secure when you’re browsing the Web, closing the door on spyware, worms, and viruses. The Firefox community of developers and security experts works around the clock to monitor security issues and release updates to better protect you.
Finally, an overlooked security issues (particularly on shared computers) is the exposure of private data like credit-card and social security numbers. Firefox protects your privacy with the new Clear Private Data tool. With a single click, you can delete all personal data, including browsing history, cookies, Web form entries and passwords.
So if you’re tired of adware and spyware issues with Internet Explorer, I’d recommend switching to Firefox, or at least trying it in parallel for a while. I’ve made the switch and I wouldn’t go back.

Identity (ID) theft is one of the most common forms of cyber crimes that take place today. It is considered as one of the easiest forms of fraud that can be committed using a computer.
An ID theft generally takes place for a variety of reasons. The most common is lack of good virus protection software on the computer. Some of us do not even hesitate opening files sent to us by strangers or clicking on random hyperlinks. In fact, these are actually designed to extract the personal information saved on our computers. Using this information, the hacker is able to commit a series of cyber crimes and other frauds in our name. What are the hazards?
The most damaging part of an ID theft is the financial loss or legal implications that can occur. An ID thief can actually use your personal details to commit financial frauds, withdraw money or conduct other transactions in your name. You can also be implicated if the fraudster indulges in some illegal activities using your personal details.
Besides, an ID theft can get you involved in a series of other unethical practices on the internet. What can you do?
The most important thing for you to do is to organize your files and folders carrying personal information properly. All such information should be ideally put together according to the subject and then saved on the computer.
The next step is to install a good privacy software on your computer, which will save your personal information from any form of ID theft.
What help is available?
Fortunately, due to the increasing number of ID thefts being conducted, there are several options available in the market to help you protect such frauds.
You can try to do some basic research on the internet to find suitable options of privacy software that can be installed on the computer. Alternatively, your local computer software provider can also offer you many such products for protection of the personal information on your computer.
Such software acts by hiding the folders you select and making them invisible to anyone who works on your computer. Even those who are skilled in the operations of a computer fail to spot the hidden files in your computer.
About Protection Software
Privacy protection software such as folder protection packages is easily available for purchase and installation.
Normally, all such products available on the internet offer an initial trial version, which can be downloaded free of cost and installed on your computer.

The bad news is that spyware is everywhere on the internet and you could have it on your computer right now. The good news is there are free spy ware removal tools for your computer that are easy to find.
There are several programs available online that you can download that will assist in detecting and eradicating spyware from your computer. My personal favorite is download.com, which is a great and trusted source for software downloads. Simply choose from an array of free programs, download and install and you’re on your way. Be sure to read the comments from previous users to help you decide which one to use.
What if you don’t want to download an actual program to your computer to scan for spyware files? Well, you are in luck because there are sites out there that will help you out but those are much harder to find.
Free spyware removal sites generally are fronts. Many of these sites will scan your computer but you won’t be able to remove them unless you download the program that they are promoting, usually at a cost. Some of these sites will even put spyware onto your computer to increase the numbers on your computer and make you think that you need the program much more desperately than you did a few moments earlier.
It is for this reason that you are much better off trying to find a program of your own to download and use at your own leisure. Most of these programs are small, easy to download and take up very little memory on your computer.
According to download.com, the best programs available are Spybot and Bazooka Adware. Both of these programs boast strong user reviews and features which will help knock out your spyware. Other great programs that I can recommend to readers out there would be Ad-Aware and Spyware Doctor.
Both of these programs are very well programmed to update automatically to protect you against the latest forms of spyware that have found their ways online. I have Spyware Doctor installed on my computer at this moment and I have yet to find a single complaint about it.
Naturally not all programs out there are going to be useful or even helpful to you. You should always do some checking on each program to find out what its pros and cons are. If you are still in doubt, check the publisher’s site and really take a close look at the details of each program to find out if it’s right for you.
If all else fails, ask around. Chances are you already know someone who can help you with your search for a good scanner and then you’ll be on your way to safe surfing.

In the last few years, the number of computer users has definitely increased multifold. We now use computers to save all kinds of details of official as well personal nature.
However, the types and number of crimes related to computers have also risen simultaneously. This has caused a leading number of users to search for an effective solution for protection of the information stored on their computers.
How important is it to use protection software?
Today, one of the most common ways to commit frauds is by stealing another user’s information from his or her computer using various techniques. Users normally do not take many precautions while storing personal information on their computers. This leaves them highly vulnerable to hackers who are always on a lookout for opportunities to steal such personal details.
Hence, it becomes extremely important for a user to use appropriate privacy protection software to safeguard his interests.
Is it easy to use the software?
Modern computer software is especially deigned with such users in view who are not very skilled at using computers. There is special privacy protection software available for hiding your folders and file so that no unauthorized user can view your private and important documents, pictures and the like.
However, the best part is that such software now comes with very well explained features that help you in hiding your folders and files. At each step in the process of hiding your information, proper help is available and the process becomes very easy.
In fact, if you are using software that you have purchased from an internet supplier, you can also avail of the facility of interactive help wherein you can actually clarify your queries from the vendor directly. This in turn makes the process far easier and you reduce the chances of committing any errors in properly hiding your folders and files.
About privacy protection software
There are plenty of options available in the market for good privacy protection software. The best way to choose appropriate privacy protection software is to conduct some research on the internet to analyze various options. Many internet suppliers now offer good folder hiding software along with an option of a trial version. This trial version can be downloaded free of cost for a limited period and installed on your computer. Once the trial period is over, you must purchase the software from the vendor.
Another option is to contact your nearest computer software provider who will then suggest various other options to you.

With all of the identity theft going on in the world right now, it is important to take steps to protect all personal information at any cost. Therefore, if your computer has personal information on it and the computer needs to be serviced for some reason, something you might consider having done is file shredding. This will keep anyone who has access to your computer for any length of time from gaining access to your personal information.
Lately, the new credit cards that use a swipe less process are actually very dangerous. Similar to accessing personal information from computers, identity thieves are now able to access the frequencies on which these swipes credit cards use and steal personal information that way. You might think this is being paranoid, but being a little paranoid sometimes really pays!
File wiping is a form of security for your personal information that works similar to taping over a VHS tape. Let’s say your computer is running a little slower than you would like and you know there are files on your computer that you will never use again, but you also don’t want anyone else to have access to that information. It used to be that and users thought that simply hitting the delete button or sending the file to the Recycle Bin would be enough.
When you tell the computer to delete a file, in fact, the file is not deleted at all. The only thing that happens is that the file’s name is erased from the available list and is also marked by the computer as space available. As long as nothing new is recorded there, the file is still retrievable. This is how data restores can happen. Others found out that magnetic pulls on a floppy disk would erase the disk. Simple system commands are no longer considered a secure method of file deletion. As computers and their capabilities are enhanced, so are the abilities of hackers and the more complex the deleting process has become.
So, you want to get rid of some files. The process of file wiping is similar to that of taking your VHS tape that has a recording on it you no longer want, maybe it’s an old movie or some instructional video that you taped from an infomercial. If you want to record another movie, you would just simply record over the old data (movie). If you want to wipe a file clean, it is the same as finding a television station that only transmits static and recording all the static over top of the old data. This prevents anyone (including yourself, remember) from accessing the data that you’ve taped over. The only thing that will be accessible will be the recorded static.
There are hundreds of software programs that allow you to file wipe and shred your files. It is important to be knowledgeable in the process - otherwise you will run the risk of erasing something that you really didn’t want to delete.
Nothing is really foolproof as stated earlier. With the advancements in technology, it’s hard to tell what the next step for a professional hacker will be, but for now, this is the best that cyber junkies have to offer.
Kevin Dark is happy to announce a file wipe utility which is one of the best in the industry.

Spyware is one of the relatively new additions to the hazards of using a computer or the internet. Much like viruses and worms, spyware programs are rogue programs that can do a lot of damage not just to your computer but to your personal life as well.
Surprisingly, though the term spyware has become popular, most people have little or no idea at all of what it does and what it can do. Spyware programs can either be just the malicious types or the criminal ones. Malicious-type spyware gathers information about your internet browsing history when you log online. This then sends the information gathered to its maker who then sells it to advertising or marketing firms. This type of spyware is the root cause of probably all the annoying pop-ups you see in your screen whenever you enter a website or open your internet browser. Harmless as they may seem, these types of spyware programs actually cause your computer’s performance to degrade. As with any other programs, spyware programs use your computer’s resources without your consent and knowledge. A large number of these programs may, at the very least, cause your computer to become more sluggish or worse to crash.
The second type of spyware is utilized for criminal activities. This type of spyware collects personal information about you like your passwords or credit card accounts. They do this by monitoring your keystrokes every time you enter your personal information when ordering something online or subscribing to a service. Damages that this type of spyware can cause may range from just frustrating to life threatening with some people losing a lot of money as spyware makers transfer all their savings to another account.
Because of these, a lot of people are taking precautions against spyware whenever they use a computer. Most people use some type of free spyware removal programs that can either detect spyware as they integrate into the system or scan the hard drive for any spyware that are already there. Some people also have switched to another internet browser or operating system as the occurrences of spyware decreases along with the popularity of the software or operating system used in the computer. Another way to detect spyware is to check the running system processes in the computer and check which ones are legitimate by cross referencing this with sources online. Processes that should not be running or present at all are killed and deleted from the system. As almost eight out of 10 computers are infected with spyware programs, it is always best to assume your computer has them and to take precautions to eliminate these threats.

Computer viruses! Worms! E-mail viruses! Trojan Horses! The media is always full of stories about computer viruses infecting computers all over the world, or companies scrambling to fix security holes in their software by releasing security updates. What can businesses or individuals to protect their computer? Installing a firewall may be one answer.
While the first computer viruses were transported from computer to computer by floppy disks, computer viruses today can cover the globe in the blink of an eye over the Internet. And they’ve probably made it to your computer. You have likely had to deal with the consequences of spyware and other malicious programs that had have crawled onto your computer while you were browsing the Internet. And as a consequences, you’ve probably spent hours and hours trying to get rid of all the spyware and other malicious programs that have taken up residence on your computer.
Even if you think your computer is virus free, you are probably wrong. That is why spyware and viruses are so dangerous; you could be using your computer with no idea that they’re there.
A firewall puts a wall between your home network and the Internet. Just like a real firewall keep fire from spreading from one area to another, a software firewall tries to keep computer viruses from spreading from the Internet onto your home computer or home network.
The firewall itself is a piece of software that is usually run on your router or cable moden. By attaching itself to this hardware, the firewall is the first thing any incoming traffic from the Internet meets.
The firewall’s job is to act to filter all of the traffic from the Internet that comes onto your home network. Whenever a network packet tries to come onto your home network, it has to make it by the firewall first. The firewall will analyse the packet to make sure it isn’t a virus or some other undesirable communication. If the firewall gives it the all clear, it will let the packet continue on its journey to your home network.
The firewall will use user-defined parameters and automatic parameters to decide whether the traffic should be let through or labelled dangerous and blocked. As the user, you could configure the firewall to block all traffic coming from a specific IP address. Obviously, you won’t be able to do this for all the malicious sites on the Internet: this list would be far, far too long!
For this reason, the firewall will automatically screen incoming traffic to make sure it corresponds to the kind of traffic you would want to receive by running it through a set of predetermined parameters. For instance, the firewall will usually let traffic sent from a website through to your computer, but it will not let someone remotely login to your computer.
No matter what software or hardware you use, you will always be putting your computer at risk when you connect it to the Internet. You can limit this risk as much as possible, however, by using a firewall. A firewall will let you access all the wonderful resources of the Internet without staying awake all night worrying about your home network.

In recent years there has been a huge boom in the amount of people shopping online. You can buy almost everything you need off the internet from your home groceries to the latest CDS and DVDs, as well as a hole host of hard to find items. Online shopping offers convenience in that you do not need to leave your home or office and that items are delivered directly to your door.
However, despite the advantages and convenience associated with online shopping there is still an air of confusion and distrust regarding shopping on the internet. Most of this comes from shock stories involving illegal transactions and added charges but the truth is that online shopping is generally more safer than physically going to the shops yourself.
A lot of concern about online shopping comes from people either misunderstanding the internet or the company you are buying from. As with high street shopping you should only purchase items from traders you perceive to be trustworthy. Look for traders you recognise or have heard about. Remember that if an offer seems too good to be true then to do some research before entering into an agreement.
Rest assured that when you enter your payment details that the transaction will generally be encrypted meaning that only the people who authorise your transaction - your bank - will see your personal details. The company you are purchasing from will not see these personal details. You may feel you have to enter a lot of personal details about yourself and the card you are paying on but these are all security measures designed to make online shopping safer.
Card Watch, the UK banking group that works with the police and retailers to stop credit card fraud, offer the following “top ten tips” when buying online:
1. Make sure your web-browser (that’s the software that you use to view websites, most commonly Internet Explorer or Netscape) is set to the highest level of security notification and monitoring. These options are not always automatically activated when your computer is set-up, so check your manual or the “Help” option.
2. Check you are using a recent version of your web-browser as they often include better security features - up-to-date versions can be downloaded free from the Microsoft or Netscape websites. If you have a different browser or use on-line services such as AOL or CompuServe, contact your ISP (Internet Service Provider) or software supplier to find out how to activate their security features.
3. Before purchasing from a website, make a record of the retailer’s contact details, including a street address and landline phone number. If these details are not available on the website, consider going elsewhere to buy, do not rely on the e-mail address alone.
4. Do not enter personal details unless the security icon is displayed (this is a small padlock that normally appears at the bottom of your browser when you begin your transaction over the Internet). You can click on the padlock to see if the retailer has an encryption certificate. This should explain the type and extent of security and encryption it uses. Only use companies that have an encryption certificate and use secure transaction technology. The address of the page where you enter personal details should also start https://.
5. If you have any queries or concerns, telephone the company before giving them your card details to reassure yourself that it is legitimate.
6. Print out your order and consider keeping copies of the retailer’s terms and conditions and returns policy. Be aware that there may well be additional charges such as postage and VAT. When buying from overseas always err on the side of caution and remember that it may be difficult to seek redress if problems arise.
7. Check statements from your bank or card issuer carefully as soon as you receive them. Raise any discrepancies with the retailer concerned in the first instance. If you find any transaction on your statement that you are certain you did not make, contact your card issuer immediately.
8. Ensure that you are fully aware of any payment commitments you are entering into, including whether you are instructing a single payment or a series of payments.
9. Never disclose your card’s PIN number to anyone, including people claiming to be from your bank or the police, and never write it down or send it over the Internet.
10. If you have any doubts about using your card, find another method of payment.

If you are a computer owner, there is definitely one thing that you need to be very concerned about. This is making backup copies of all of your computer files and programs. After all, if your computer is hit with a virus of any sort that threatens to destroy it, you will not lose valuable information.
How can you lose your files?
There are many things that can happen that can cause you to lose your computer files. Not only can your computer be hit by a bad virus, irritating spyware, or malware, but other unfortunate circumstances can also occur. For example, a lightening storm could short circuit your computer, if it is not protected by a power surge. This could wipe your computer out, or make it entirely unusable. The same thing holds true in the event of a power surge. Why, a simple child playing around with your computer can even do a great deal of damage! This is why it is in your best interest to keep backup files of everything that is important to you.
What types of files should you backup?
The types of computer files that you should backup are completely up to you. It all depends on what files are the most important and valuable to you. Most people typically find the following types of files to be rated high on their list of valuable files: bank records and finances, work projects, email address books, digital photographs, software, music, or other files downloaded from the Internet, Internet Explorer bookmarks, and Outlook calendars.
How can you backup your computer files?
There are a variety of ways to backup your computer files. The most basic way is to backup your files once a week or once a month (depending on how much you use your computer) by burning your important information on a CD. If your computer does not have a CD-ROM drive to do the burning, you could always purchase an external hard drive to put the files on. External hard drives come in a multitude of memory sizes. You can get one that is small enough to fit on your keychain. The price range for external hard drives varies. You can get an external hard drive for as little as twenty dollars, or for as much as a few hundred dollars. The memory space and compactness will often determine the price. External hard drives are typically plugged into your computer using the USB port.
Where should you keep your computer’s backup files?
Once you have backed up your computer, where should you keep the files that are on a CD, external hard drive, or other device? The answer is simple: somewhere safe and sound! It may even be a good idea to back up your computer two different ways and then store at least one of the backups in a safe. It pays to have a safe copy of your files. It is always better to be safe than sorry!

Spyware can be a very annoying hassle to deal with when it embeds itself on a computer. Spyware reports information that it finds on a computer to a third party. It does this without the consent of the computer’s owner.
What kind of spying does spyware do?
Spyware, in easy terms, is a computer program that monitors what you do on your computer and then sends that information to another party over the Internet. As far as the “spying” goes, many kinds of spyware can keep track of the web sites that you visit. This enables third parties to see what you are interested in, and send you advertisements in the form of spam. Some legitimate companies use spyware for advertisement purposes. This type of spyware is often referred to as adware, and is not as malicious as other spyware. At the same time, however, it is just as annoying to most computer users.
Some spyware can be much more dangerous than this, and can even keep a record of every keystroke that you type on your computer. In other words, it can detect your passwords and even collect your credit card or bank account information, if you type it into your computer. This type of spyware can lead to identity theft, stolen funds, and some rather large headaches!
Where does spyware come from?
One of the most common ways of getting spyware on your computer is by visiting web sites that try to install it on your computer. Many of these web sites have spam on them that trigger pop-up screens to appear on your screen. These pop-up screens can tempt you to click on them by offering free prizes, games, blogs, and other fun things. However, when you click on one of them, they install malicious files onto your computer. Sometimes you won’t even realize what has happened. Other times, you will know immediately that your computer has been infected - as your will get bombarded with pop-up screens or your home page will change to something other than what it was.
How can you get rid of spyware on your computer?
There are a large variety of computer software programs available on the market today that can eliminate spyware from your computer. This software is known as anti-spyware. Some of the more popular anti-spyware programs include Webroot Spy Sweeper, SpyBlaster, and Windows Defender. You can purchase these programs in computer and electronics stores, or you can even download them directly off of the Internet from their official web sites. Some anti-spyware programs are free, however the best ones typically come with a price. Sometimes your Internet cable or DSL service provider (if you have one) will provide you with an anti-spyware program included in your package. No matter what type of anti-spyware program you get, you will be able to update your anti-spyware programs as newer versions become available.
How often should you run your anti-spyware program?
If you really want to be safe about it, you should run your anti-spyware program every time you use your computer. They are fairly quick programs to use, and can even run in the background while you work on something else.

In the recent years, life has become immensely easy for the common person who wants to carry out some basic operations through the computer. These include storage of some information and communication through emails and chat programs.
With the increase in number of computer users, the allied products available for them have also increased. Today the market offers a vast variety of software that helps an individual to effectively use the computer for his needs.
What does privacy protection software do?
Privacy protection software is one of the latest offerings of the computer software market.
Privacy protection software is meant to apply certain settings on your computer that will help you to save the important information from unauthorized users. We often save such information, pictures or even music files on our computers, which we do not want others to view. We want to hide them from public view, so that even our colleagues, roommates, children or other family members cannot view them.
The most important feature of protection software is the way in which it hides the folders. None of the users can even identify that a certain folder or file has been hidden somewhere in the computer. All possible traces of these are removed from every application of the computer. As a result, even the best of experts cannot manage to trace such hidden information on your computer.
Another main utility is the easy to use and secure features, which make it possible even for a person with minimal computer knowledge to use the software. The settings can be applied very easily on the folders. For security purposes, you can also apply locks and passwords on the hidden folders, so that no one else can operate upon them, not even hackers.
Who uses privacy protection software?
Such software is now being increasingly used by all usage groups. In an office environment, people often do not want the other colleagues or subordinates to view certain files and folders they save on the computer. Even at home, we save such material, which we do not want our children or other family members to view.
These could include our financial details, critical business information, personal details, photographs, videos, music files and the like.
Where is it available?
You can visit the various websites on the internet offering such privacy protection software. Many internet suppliers offer this software in various forms, having different features. Another alternative is to contact your local computer software provider who will be able to suggest you some good options.
In fact, most of the internet suppliers of such software offer a free of cost trial version of the software. This can be downloaded and installed on the computer. The trial version is available for a fixed period, usually lasting up to 20 days.

There is a type of software out there that all computer owners and operators need to be aware of. That software is known as malware, or “malicious software”. Malware can completely destroy computers or make them difficult to use.
Malware viruses and worms:
One of the most dangerous type of malware is a malware virus or worm. These two types of malware spread quickly and sometimes undetected until it is too late and a great deal of damage has already been caused to your computer. A malware virus will drop its code into your computer’s files to make the virus spread. It often takes you - the user - to advance the spread of the virus. On the other hand, a malware worm will go into your computer’s files and replace them. Instead of needing you to help spread the worm, the worm will spread itself no matter what you do.
Trojan horse viruses:
Malware also takes the form of a virus known as a Trojan horse. A Trojan horse virus can do some severe damage to your PC. For example, you could simply download a desktop wallpaper program to decorate your computer desktop background. No big deal, right? Wrong! This program in particular has a Trojan horse virus embedded in it. You think you are getting desktop wallpaper, but in reality you are getting a program that goes into your system and leaves a backdoor open to hackers who can do just about anything to your computer and its information that they want. Hackers can get all of your previously-protected passwords. They can look at all of your bank account, credit card, and personal information you have on your computer. Trojan horse viruses can erase your files without your consent. More complex Trojan horse viruses can even appear to control your computer, by making your CD-ROM drive open and close at random times - when you did not attempt to make it open and close yourself. It will appear as is there is a ghost in your machine! However, it is no ghost - it’s a dangerous virus that can even make you an unfortunate victim of identity theft.
Protecting your computer from malware:
If you want to protect your computer from malware, it is very important that you buy high-quality virus protection software as well as a firewall. These two things will guard your computer from any type of malware attacks.
Please also note that you must, must, must update your virus protection software when it expires. If you do not do so, then it will not work to the best of its ability - and therefore your computer will not be protected from dangerous malware. Usually when you buy anti-virus software, the package is sold with an additional year of free software updates. After this time, it is completely up to you to purchase additional protection. For example, you can pay for another year or more of protection for a reasonable fee. Don’t let anything stop you from taking care of yourself and your computer!

Computer owners beware! If you don’t have a premier security computer product such as a virus protector, pop-up blocker, or anti-spyware program installed on your computer, you are basically leaving your PC open to danger. Let’s look at some of the most popular programs available.
Virus protection software:
There is a rather large variety of companies that sell high-end virus protection software. For the oncoming year of 2007, there are several anti-virus programs that are making quite a splash as the best of the best. These programs include The Shield Pro, Bit Defender 9, Norton Antivirus, Kaspersky 5.0, McAfee Virusscan, Trend PC-cillin, and Panda Antivirus.
One of the most talked about of these programs is The Shield Pro. This anti-virus software also contains a firewall with its installation, as a bonus feature. A great program for computer users who are not very computer savvy, The Shield Pro is extremely easy to install and use. This program will perform scans of your computer once a week and update just as often - all on its own. So, if you forget to run a scan, you don’t have to worry about it because the program will do it for you. The Shield Pro only takes up a small space on a hard drive, unlike other anti-virus programs. This means that it will not slow the system.
Anti-spyware software:
There are a huge variety of anti-apyware programs on the market that can destroy spyware on your computer. Popular anti-spyware programs include Webroot Spy Sweeper, SpyBlaster, and Windows Defender. These programs can be bought in computer and electronics stores. Internet cable or DSL service providers often provide you with an anti-spyware program if you use their services. As newer versions of anti-spyware programs become available, you will be able to download them or receive them via postal mail or email.
Firewalls:
Although most anti-virus software programs provide firewalls in their packages, some do not. You can purchase high-quality firewalls such as ZoneAlarm Pro, which will stop hackers from getting into your computer system. A firewall provides a barrier between your computer and the outside world - which can oftentimes be a dangerous place.
Security kits:
Built-in padlock security tags are also quickly becoming popular in the computer world. These uniquely designed tags allow you to lock up your computer’s hard drive with a combination lock, so that no one can physically steal your hard drive or any other drives or cards you have installed in your system. This is just an example of how far security is coming in the computer world!
With all of these top security products, it is important to remember that they only work if you take the time to maintain and update them as necessary. For example, if you don’t update your anti-virus software or your anti-spyware programs frequently as updates are available, you will not be one hundred percent protected. The safety and security of your computer is truly in your own hands!

The Internet is a place where people communicate at a very cheap price. It is where people now do their shopping, do business and trade in the financial market. This is why the Internet is considered as one of the most important tools in the new millennium.
Because of this, all your personal and financial information are stored in your computer, and also in your emails. If you do business in the Internet, important files will also be stored in your computer.
This is why there are people who take advantage of this technology to steal from hardworking and honest people. These people are called hackers and they often commit identity theft. They take control of your computer by putting spyware programs that can be acquired in the Internet.
Spyware works like inviting a stranger right in the comforts of your own home and letting him or her install surveillance equipments around your home. The thought of having a stranger looking at your personal and financial information could make anyone cringe.
This is why you should take all the necessary steps in preventing this stranger to have access to your computer in order to prevent them from stealing from you. Today, there are available software programs that enable you to protect yourself from malicious programs, such as viruses, spywares, and adwares.
One such program is developed by Norton. So you think you have an anti virus an anti spyware, on your computer and your computer and business is safe this is the misconception most people have because there are some really deadly spyware and adware waiting to seriously affect your business.
Usually there are a lot of dubbed spyware and adware on the internet, they are malicious and can transmit information about the content of your computer to a third party and insert ads into your browser.
Spyware
Spyware slows down the speed of your computer, posing mere inconvenience. The top computer manufactures say that the number 1 reason people call for tech support is spyware. But they can be more dangerous this could include theft of the important information of your company and bank details and your customer information.
It is seen most of the time that spyware is installed on your computer with the permission of the user’s this usually happen because the user does not bother to read the fine print of in the agreement before clicking accept, thats where it comes into action and you have unknowingly given a software developer to control your computer remotely
Adware
A recent study has shown that 90% of the computers are infected by adware, There are many good programs that display advertisements, it interfaces with these programs such as your browser and show you unwanted ads, it also changes the behavior of your computer and slows it down.
So how do you need to protect yourself from spyware and adware Firstly write down a strict internet security policy on file sharing on the internet this will reduce the chances attracting it. Reading the news or some good business articles should be fine but nothing else. Distribute the policy and see that the employees follow it.
Secondly get in touch with your network administrator and instruct him to restrict any sought of downloading or file sharing from the internet this will considerably reduce the chances of you getting it and your system will be protected.
This does not stop here there are new security updates everyday and you or your administrator should ensure that your internet browser is regularly updated, These updates usually have security patches that fix computer bugs that leave certain programs especially vulnerable.
Finally, run a diagnostic program like Ad-aware, Web roots Spy Sweeper, or Hijack This, which probe your computer and root out suspicious files. These programs are your spyware doctor can help purge certain kinds of spyware. Syware remover and spyware detection can detect and remove spyware. However, eliminating it altogether can be tricky, requiring users to inspect a hard drive one file at a time.
The security and privacy of you and your customers against spyware and adware may depend on taking these safeguards.

Computers nowadays will not last without the installations of a good anti virus software. It is recommended that a frequent computer virus scan be done to ensure that your computer has not been infected with a virus. Most of us have probably experienced computer defaults caused by a virus attack and feel that you are not safe enough from hackers. So, keep your computer safe from these dangerous virus threats.
Install Computer Virus Scan software and protect your personal data from hackers, detect and remove spywares, adwares and web dialers. Virus scan softwares also restore your computer if it is already infected. They will detect the infections and have them removed, deleted or quarantined.
Imagine having a malicious program destroying your files and computer in seconds? These could be files that you have worked so hard for. So why not secure your computer? Nobody wants his hard disk destroyed, personal information stolen and files erased.
With the growing number of viruses - worms, trojans and other hazards that can easily infect your computer, protecting your PC has never been more important. Especially now that computers has been given a more important role in our daily lives.
The availability of virus scan softwares and the development of new programs in the light of this problem put an ease to many of the computer owners. Virus scan destroys all viruses which could have penetrated into the system mostly, cleaning up takes only but a few seconds.
While at first install it would do a thorough computer virus scan to ensure that there is no virus hiding anywhere in your pc. After that it would do occasional computer virus scans to maintain the cleanliness of your computer.
Computer virus scan programs also detect potentially unwanted applications like spyware, adware, web dialers and more.
Advanced antivirus technology detects and removes all latest versions of worm, email, download and other computer viruses, including Sobig, Lovsan (MSBlaster), Bugbear, Palyh, Fizzer, Klez, Sircam, Nimda, CIH, “I love you” virus, “Anna Kournikova” virus, Hahaha, Badtrans, Vbs funlove letter, Melissa and many other worm, back door and Trojan Horse viruses.
With a computer virus scanner on duty, you will almost never contract a virus. You can surf the Internet safely, read your emails and download files without being worried about viruses.
After installing a computer virus scanner, it will act as a 24/7 guard to your computer. Tirelessly it will guard your computer against attacks from viruses and preventing harm from other malicious software.
The background scanner will operate continuously, watching for viruses as you are using your computer for everyday tasks. You do not have to do anything. In the software, a computer virus scanner will perform this function and do the entire job automatically, in the background, ensuring the safety of your computer. Or, if you wish, you can configure it to schedule, run and manage your own scan operations.
The scanner starts when you start your computer, and stays in memory until you shut it or your system down. The scanner also includes optional features that keep your computer from connecting to dangerous Internet sites.
If you plug-in permanently or just connect periodically to the Internet, computer virus scan softwares automatically checks for the latest virus definitions, patches and fixes — then updates itself automatically. This is your first line of defense against computer viruses. In some anti virus software they can also be your second, third and fourth.

The first known use of the expression “spyware” occurred on October 17th, 1994 in a post that joked about Microsoft’s business model. Spyware later came to allude to snoop equipment such as diminutive cameras. In early 2000, the man who started Zone Labs used the term in a press release for a new product. Since then, the computer-community has used the term in its current definition.
Spyware often comes wrapped-in with shareware or other software, and with music CDs. The user installs a program, for example, a file-trading utility or music program. The installer also installs the spyware. Even though the acceptable software itself may not do harm, the wrapped-in spyware does. Occasionally, spyware authors will pay shareware creators to wrap-in spyware with their software. An example is the Gator spyware distributed by Claria. There are instances when spyware authors will repackage desirable free software with destructive installers that add spyware.
Another way of propagating spyware is by tricking users. A program will manipulate a security feature that is supposed to prevent harmful installations. Internet Explorer is designed to stop websites from starting an unwanted download. Alternately, a user action must normally trigger a download (like clicking on a link). Nevertheless, links can prove misleading. For example, a pop-up may look like a normal Windows dialog box. The box contains wording like “Do you want to improve your Internet experience?” with links that look like real buttons reading No and Yes. It doesn’t matter which button the user selects, a malicious download will start, installing the spyware on the user’s computer. Newer versions of Internet Explorer offer better security against this tactic.
Many unscrupulous spyware creators infect a computer by going after security weaknesses in the Web browser or in other applications on the targeted computer. When the user arrives at a Web site controlled by the spyware creator, the site includes code that forces the download and installation of spyware or infiltrates the browser. This kind of spyware creator will have broad knowledge of commercial-quality firewall and anti-virus programming. This is commonly known as a “drive-by download”. It leaves the user an unfortunate onlooker to the intrusion. Conventional “browser attacks” target security weaknesses in Microsoft Java Runtime and Internet Explorer.
Another problem in the case of some kinds of spyware programs is that they will replace the banner ads on visited web sites. Spyware that acts like a Browser Helper or web proxy can replace a site’s own advertisements with advertisements that benefit the spyware author. This can seriously affect the revenue stream of advertising funded web sites.
There have been instances when a worm or virus has delivered a cargo of spyware. For example, some attackers used the W32.Spybot.Worm to set up spyware that caused pornographic ads to pop up on the screens of an infected system. By re-routing traffic to commercial sites that are set up to funnel funds to the spyware creators, they can profit even by such obviously illegal actions.

The largest target of spyware is without a doubt Microsoft’s Internet Explorer.
It is the most widely used web browser and it has a long history of weak security. Its deeply integrated into the Windows operating system and its scriptability make it very susceptible to intrusion by malicious software. Browser helper objects can easily attach to Internet Explorer. These helper objects redirect traffic and add toolbars.
The most common cause for users of the Microsoft Windows operating system to seek technical support from internet service providers or computer manufacturers is the infestation of spyware. In most cases the user has no comprehension of spyware and thinks that the system’s stability, performance, and/or connectivity issues relate to Microsoft Windows, hardware, or to a virus. Occasionally, owners of seriously infected systems end up purchasing an entire new computer system because their existing system “has become too unreliable or slow”. Extremely infected systems sometimes require a clean re-install of all their software to allow the system to function properly. This is a highly time-consuming chore, even for accomplished users.
Normally, a single piece of spyware does not make a computer unusable. However, an infected computer almost always has more than one piece of spyware installed. AOL did a study in 2004 and concluded that if a computer has any spyware at all, it will be infected by dozens of different pieces. Its the cumulative effect of the different spyware components that cause the problems reported by users. The computer slows down to a crawl, overpowered by the many power-draining processes running on it. Similar to an immune deficiency disease, some kinds of spyware disarms anti-virus software and firewalls, and/or lowers browser security settings, which subjects the system to additional infections. In addition, there have been cases where a spyware program has disabled a competitor’s spyware program already installed on the computer.
There are some forms of spyware that modify system files to make themselves very difficult to remove. For example, Targetsoft changes the “Winsock” Windows Sockets files. Removing the spyware infected file “inetadpt.dll” will interfere with networking usage. For the sake of convenience, a Windows user generally has administrative-level system privileges. Because of this, any program which the user runs, intentionally or not, will have full access to the entire system. Spyware, along with other various dangers, has caused some Windows users to change to other platforms such as Apple Macintosh or Linux, which are less frequently targeted by spyware authors.
The most common complaints about spyware are Pop-up advertisements. Displaying and/or downloading ads can overwhelm a system. Its very rare for an infected system to have only one spyware program running. More typically, the system will be infected by dozens of applications. So, while one of the programs may display ads infrequently, the cumulative effect on the system can become overwhelming.
Most web users dislike offensive or irritating advertisements. Just like banner
ads, some spyware advertisements use flickering banners or animation designed to get the user’s attention - because of this they are very distracting. Pornography Pop-up ads often display indiscriminately, this even includes when children may be using the computer which is in violation of many anti-pornography laws.

Free software and file sharing can introduce your computer system to Spyware that recognizes where you go and often connects you to other users who are running the same software. File sharing can allow someone to view other important information on your computer such as records and documents, tax returns, email messages, medical records, and other personal documents. Be careful of opening links in email messages. They could be loaded with viruses or can give a hacker an open line directly to your computer and all of your personal files. Some messages seem to come from names that you recognize but they may just be spelled a little different or have a slightly different last name.
One of the main ways internet security on your PC is compromised is via a program called a Trojan Horse. A Trojan Horse is a program that quietly runs in the background, inviting the user to run it, while spreading its malicious code. This code can do any number of things. It can start right away or it may simply install a program that won’t start for sometime. Once it does start, it can delete all of the files on the computer or it can infect the computer and try to infect other computers on the network. There are a number of ways spyware is delivered, and as a Trojan horse is the most common.
In addition to these things, spyware may infect your e-mail address book. Once this occurs, spam will be sent to every single person in every single infected address book.
The major difference between spyware like Gator and most other spyware programs is that users are understandably notified of its download before it actually occurs.
Another significant spyware threat is CoolWebSearch. This spyware can do a number of things to compromise your internet security. First, it can take over your current internet settings, making things display wrong, and causing other system inconsistencies.
The third major spyware threat is 180searchassistant. This program has both pop-up and pop-under ads based on the user’s search terms. Moreover, once a site is clicked on, a new browser window opens to display more advertisements based on the search terms. It constantly updates by itself, and it can display pop-up ads even when the internet is not running. In addition to compromising your internet security, it can cause system slow downs.
The fourth detrimental spyware threat to your internet security is ISTbar. This spyware program displays adult pop-ups, even when the internet is not in use. It can hijack your browser settings, reset your homepage, and cause continual cascading pop-ups while you are using the internet. It will continually download related files without your knowledge. Moreover, it can cause system slow downs.
The final major spyware threat to your internet security is Internet Optimizer. This program redirects your computer to its advertising sites. It also downloads and continually updates itself without your knowledge. The worst part about this spyware, though, is it leaves a back door open to your system so other viruses can penetrate your defenses.
Getting rid of adware and Spyware can be frustrating. Running an up-to-date anti-Spyware program can find any Spyware or adware that has crept into your system. Before running the scan, shut down all of your open browser windows, e-mail applications, and then take your computer off the Internet. Scan the system and allow the program to remove any adware or Spyware it finds. Then restart your computer. After you have rebooted the computer, scan a second time. If the scanner finds signs of unwanted Spyware or adware, remove any traces you find and reboot the computer again. After that, scan a third time. If you feel that your computer may still be affected, reboot your computer into Safe Mode. Once you’ve done that, open your anti-Spyware program and run another complete scan. That should take care of all programs that have crept into your computer system unaware.

While computer operating systems today are much more secure than just two years ago, there is still some user management necessary. These operating systems, such as Microsoft Windows XP are becoming more and more “user friendly” from a security standpoint. Many potential security problems are locked down by default and the user generally does not need to be concerned with implementing them.
However, computer security (”cyber-security”), in general, is still somewhat reactive. Good examples of being reactive are the Anti-Virus products on the market today, for example Norton Utilities by Symantec. While they try to anticipate new types of attacks, they still can not effectively predict specific attacks, because the creators of such attacks are effectively on the “offensive.”
Most laptop computers today use Microsoft’s Windows XP, SP2 as the operating system. This release has some of the best security features currently available for a computer, but they need to be checked or in some cases implemented by the user. A good example of this is an anti-virus product installed on your laptop. Not only does the Anti-virus software need to be enabled, but the Microsoft XP settings may need to be changed to accommodate the anti-virus changes. It is the user’s responsibility to make sure this protection in enabled.
These checklists outline the steps you should take to reach a baseline of security with Windows XP Home Edition and Windows XP Professional computers, either on their own or as part of a Windows NT or Windows 2000 domain. Additional information about these checklists can be found on the Microsoft Website. Just search on the Microsoft site using the term “security.”
Important: The purpose of these checklists is to give instructions for configuring a baseline level of security on Windows XP computers. This guide does not provide a complete list of all security features provided in Windows XP or how to use them. A complete list of new security features available in Windows XP is available on the Microsoft Web site.
Windows XP Professional Configuration - 12 Steps
1. Verify that all disk partitions are formatted with NTFS
2. Protect file shares
3. Use Internet Connection sharing for shared Internet connections
4. Enable Internet Connection Firewall
5. Use software restriction policies
6. Use account passwords
7. Disable unnecessary services
8. Disable or delete unnecessary accounts
9. Make sure the Guest account is disabled
10. Set stronger password policies
11. Set account lockout policy
12. Install antivirus software, antishareware software and updates
These security tips are suggested by Microsoft to provide a baseline level of security for your computer. Additional security steps that are very important to protect your laptop and desktop computers include:
