How Anti-Virus Software Works

Spyware and Viruses No Comments

Anti-Virus software is a program to run on your computer, often in the background and keeps malicious spyware and background viruses from attacking your hard drive.there are different techniques that the software will use to keep viruses off of your computer. The software will start to scan all your files you have saved so that it can search for known viruses that will match definitions in a dictionary made only to detect a virus. Having antivirus software protects your computer from getting infected from different kinds of Mal ware that can be embedded in e-mails, downloads, and even programs that you install your computer.

The software will identify suspicious behavior from any computer program that might show signs of infection. The analysis may also include data captures, port monitoring and other methods. Most commercial antivirus software starts off with the approach called the virus dictionary approach.

Basically what happens is your antivirus software is constantly updated with a latest in the dictionary that it carries of viruses. The software scans your computer looking for anything that matches the different files that it has in its list of different viruses. Once the computer software comes up against any of these files that match in its list or dictionary of viruses, the first thing it does is try to remove it from the file. If you cannot remove it from the file, it will quarantine it. By putting the virus in quarantine, it prevents it from spreading further onto your computer.

Because the virus dictionary approach relies on a file of viruses, you need to make sure that when you buy antivirus software it comes with unlimited virus updates. The world of spyware, viruses, and Mal ware is ever changing and evolving and it is up to a good software company to keep up to date with the different viruses that are out there. Most software will update itself with the latest viruses. But you need to make sure that you are updating frequently because once you stop, the odds are that a new virus out there can get on your computer.

Most versions of antivirus software now continue to run in the background of your computer. Especially if you are constantly online, you can get a virus just by visiting a webpage. There are computer hackers out there that can install a virus into your computer from the webpage you are visiting. With the current antivirus software that is out there, if it’s running in the background it will catch the attempt to install the virus, remove it, or quarantine it.

You can buy antivirus software, or you can actually download free versions off of the Internet. Now this may sound funny because downloading something off of the Internet could have a virus on it, but there are websites that have high authority and are trusted to provide freeware that is constantly updated. If your computer is new, you may actually are ready have antivirus software preloaded in the operating system.

Which Is The Best Antivirus Software?

Spyware and Viruses No Comments

Before purchasing of downloading antivirus software there are some features that should look out for. We believe the key factors determining the quality of antivirus software is:

1. Its effectiveness at removing viruses (check independent tests for unbiased results)
2. Its ease of use (normally down to its user interface)
3. Its value for money
4. Its customer and technical support (should be free and 24/7 ideally)
5. Its regularity of updates
6. Its drain on system resources
7. Its compatibility

When all the major criteria were investigated we found that Kaspersky antivirus 7.0 to be the best all round antivirus software on the market day. However, it may not meet your requirements so it is important to do your own investigation using the criteria above. Our findings of some of the top sellers are below. Hopefully this will give you some guidance of what is out there at the moment and what may suit you.

Kaspersky Anti-Virus 7.0
The virus detection technology that drives this software has performed very well in independent tests and gained a strong reputation within the industry. The technical support is excellent and the user interface intuitive.

The other main advantages with it are the parental control features which are not present in other software (great for you parents out there) and the password protected privacy control. We found that it had minimal effect on PC performance (apart from the first scan which did slow things down). Finally, and very importantly it carried out automated hourly updates and real time internet scanning.

The downsides were its price $59.99 and the time it took to do the initial scan.

BitDefender Antivirus 2008
Another very effective piece of antivirus software is BitDefender. its scanning engines are ICSA Labs certifies and it also adds the added bonus of antispyware and antiadware. Gamers should be pleased with the new gamer version which stops annoying pop ups during game play.

A key advantage of this software over others is the rootkit detection and removal feature. Again this is something that sets it over and above the competition. Free 24/7 support and a reasonable price ($24.95) make it a real contender to Kaspersky antvirus 7.0. The downsides to this version are the lack of advanced configuration options which will frustrate the more advanced user. The scans were also on the lengthy side.

Norton Antivirus 2008
Despite having a strong brand and many years of experience developing antivirus software we think Norton Antivirus 2008 to be one of the worst on the market. It does the basics ok but there are too many problems with it to be competitive. For example, there seems to be an assumption only IE users exist. Help terms are geared towards IE users and Browser Defender does not work with any other browsers.

It is a massive 300MB, that is nearly 6 times the size of Kaspersky anti-virus 7.0. The limited performance does not justify this size. It slowed down our machine measurably. The interface was awful and configuring settings was a real pain. Finally, the anti-spyware was not very effective.

These are just three of the big players. Please do your research as the best known are not always the best.

Should You Buy Antivirus Software Or Get A Free Version?

Spyware and Viruses No Comments

Computers have become so important in so many parts of our personal and professional life that it is very important to safeguard the data stored in them against viruses which are designed to destroy or steal it.

However, many people take this very lightly and never think twice about the damage that can be caused by such viruses. Others may consider antivirus software but then opt for a free version rather than paying for it. What they do not realize is that even these free antivirus downloads might be spam or can inject virus into the system.

The free versions that are not malicious in their intent may however be very ineffective in detecting and destroying viruses. Much antivirus freeware is outdated and not powerful enough to fight the virus or remove it fully from the system.

Keeping this in mind many software companies are trying to cash in on the demand for a good antivirus software. So they introduce antivirus software which is powerful enough to fight any form of virus and it also provided one year free upgrade after which time the user can update the virus for a small additional fee. This software is normally moderately priced ($25 - $65) and can provide a complete solution for your systems security and safeguard the data from virus threats.

When you become a paid customer of an antivirus program you are entitled to certain special benefits which you are devoid of when you download free antivirus software. You will need to pay for customer support, possible after a short period of free support, but the most serious disadvantage is that the software is not automatically updated regularly. This prevents it being effective against new viruses which come on coming day after day.

Whereas when you buy antivirus software the software company is responsible for all your queries related to the software and its functioning. As the competition among the antivirus software companies increases more are offering increasing functionality (i.e. antiadware, privacy features etc) and better value. Free 24/7 live support is also becoming offered by some of the big players. Moreover the software that you buy will entitle you for a free upgrades for at least one year and after that you need to pay only a small fee to upgrade and continue using the software.

Therefore many benefits are experienced when a user opts for a paid antivirus software. Now, this may come as no surprise but it is all too common for people to pay more in the long term by taking the cheap short term option.

What Is Adware And Should You Care?

Spyware and Viruses No Comments

Adware is as annoying as spyware for computer users. What is adware? Adware stands for advertising supported software, it is a software that can automatically play, displays, or downloads ads to your computer after a software has been installed that contains the adware, or even when you are using that specific downloaded application. Certain adware as a matter of fact can be classified as spyware, because it is privacy invasive software.

How does Adware work? Well the advertising functions are built into or perhaps bundled with another software, this software will mark or make notes as to what internet sites you have gone too, and it will go off of this information to pop up advertisements on your computer that match the sites you have visited.

Why do people create Adware? Well sometimes the developer of the software will put in the adware because it is a way to allow him or her to recover the cost of developing the software. At times this may also allow the developer to offer their software for free or a reduced price.

In fact at times the income the developer earns off of these ads may motivate them to create more software with the adware bundled in, or upgrade the current software. Of course when these advertisements pop up on your computer you’re not thinking of the money the developer made, you just thinking how annoying these interruptions are to your work or fun.

Adware can also be known as shareware, although there are shareware that does not have adware bundled with it. The shareware that is advertising supported is adware, while a shareware program that is not supported by ads is just normal shareware. At times a way for the developers to make more money they will offer a registered copy of the shareware and it will promise no advertisements.

Just a few samples of some of the better known programs that have adware bundled with the downloads are as follows:

Adobe Reader
Kazaa
AOL Instant Messenger
Yahoo Messenger
Bonzi buddy
Messenger Plus! Live
Smiley Central
Burn4Free
Comet Cursor
RealPlayer
Gator
Hotbar
Incredimail
WeatherBug
Windows Live Messenger
Zwinky

This is only a partial list of programs, but you can tell some of the more popular downloads have adware bundled with them. So basically be careful at what you download or get an adware remover. I found it amazing that some of these had adware attached to them, while others had messed with my old computer so I had a feeling that something was wrong with the download.

How many people have Yahoo messenger though? Millions if not billions of people, and I bet none of them was aware of the adware being bundled with it. Same with AOL Messenger, again billions have this program downloaded onto their computer, where they aware of the adware?

The biggest surprise I felt was Adobe Reader, I really wouldn’t have guessed that being bundled with adware. It just goes to show you, you truly never know what all you are downloading.

As far as removing adware, there are several programs that will detect and remove adware. In fact some of these choices have the option of removing both adware and spyware. Two horrible things that you can remove at once that is great!

Start Protecting Yourself Online

Spyware and Viruses No Comments

The Internet is a fantastic tool and is open to absolutely everyone. Unfortunately, some people are not aware of the dangers that exist. You should be made aware of these and learn how to best protect yourself. There are a number of ways to do this:

1) Make sure your Windows Firewall is switched on
2) Make sure you have a good antivirus package installed on your computer and that you regularly update it
3) Never open links from emails if you are unclear about its origin
4) Only download files from trusted websites
5) Only use a credit or debit card online with trusted providers i.e. ClickBank, PayPal etc

These basic points may seem like common sense, but you’d be surprised at how many people make these mistakes. What follows could be a virus infection on their computer, credit card fraud, and a whole host of other problems.

The Internet is a useful tool but has too many problems and dangers. So what else can be done to minimise any risks? Well next time you plan to surf the net, why not use a proxy website? There are loads of proxy sites available on the net, mostly free, so you shouldn’t have a problem finding one.

Proxies act as a middle man between your computer and the Internet. It routes data to you and handles all requests you make on your behalf. This way, when you visit websites, your details like your IP address and other information isn’t disclosed to the website you’re visiting. Instead, they capture the proxy’s details. This is useful if you want to retain a degree on anonymity while you are surfing and also gives you an added layer of protection from virus threats and hackers.

My proxy website is sometimes called Ninja Proxy or Secret Proxy. It has been around for a while now and is getting increasingly popular. All you have to do is visit the address or if you type in Ninja Proxy in Google it should come up. When you are at the site scroll down and locate the URL bar. You will see the http in the box indicating the place of the web address. Once you have entered in all you have to do is hit the GO button and you’re away!

Congratulations, you are now surfing behind an anonymous proxy website and your personal details are safe.

This is just one example of a proxy website that exists online. There are literally thousands of them out there. Another step you might want to take to protect yourself while online is to use an encrypted tunnel. These are particularly useful, especially if you are dealing with sensitive matters like large volume credit card transactions or Internet banking. The way it works is by creating a virtual tunnel between your computer and the server that provides the proxy and encryption services.

All of the data between you and the server and jumbled up. This is the purpose of encryption. This way, if somebody were to intercept and data, all they would get if jumbled up data and not the actual data itself. This would ensure maximum protection and should definitely be thought of seriously if you use a wireless Internet connection. There are numerous software packages available on the Internet that a hacker could purchase.

He could then download it and use it to hack your Internet connection from his computer. He could then steal you bandwidth, download illegal material, and even spy on your surfing habits. This is not meant to scare you but just to make you are of all potential dangers that exist while you are surfing online.

Unfortunately, encryption servers are not free and you will have to pay for it. It is definitely worth the money though and the level of protection you get from it is well worth it.

I hope you find this article useful and that you can use the tips and suggestions outlined to increase your safety and privacy while you surf online. Happy surfing!

A Spyware Primer

Spyware and Viruses No Comments

Spyware is simply software that is generally installed without the computer users permission. After installation, it begins to obtain data and information regarding the users browsing habits and often times will also monitor and track other forms of personal data. The term spyware has recently mutated into a broader term referring to any type of software that is operating on a computer without the users consent to the benefit of an unauthorized third party.

Let us look at some functions that spyware performs without user authorization. Spyware can add affiliate links to shopping portals and thus capture commissions whenever purchases are made by the user. It can monitor internet activity and dictate future email and spam to the user. It can install other third party applications. It can hijack the user browser and add new homepages, icons and favorite links. And probably the most obvious affect of spyware is a very sluggish PC.

Microsoft Windows along with the Internet Explorer browser have been the primary targets of spyware, simply because they cater to the vast majority of users and are the software of choice. Using another operating system or browser may assist in reducing the risk of spyware, but only because it is less common and not because it is more secure. Unfortunately, downloading applications from the internet is the by far the most notable method of infection.

If you are becoming swamped with unwanted advertisements appearing while using your computer or other unwanted toolbars in your browser, it is most likely that you have some form of spyware infection. Kind in mind that probably the most of these come from pornographic and gambling sites, so you might want to consider steering clear of those sites and deleting any email you might receive from these type of sites. Many users are unaware of the incentives involved in spyware. Website owners can be paid as much as $0.50 for each install of an ActiveX control containing spyware, which can be very attractive to many undesirable sites.

After users have been taught some sensible precautions that can be easily taken when using the internet and about downloading software, the effects of spyware can be drastically reduced. It can actually be very straight forward to eliminate and remove spyware with the proper software. Remember that it is very important to combine effective anti-spyware tools with other anti-virus and Firewall applications for complete PC protection.

Ways To Remove Or Avoid Adware And Spyware Without Spending A Dime

Spyware and Viruses No Comments

With the threat of identity theft and financial fraud looming on the Internet, adware and spyware can be more than just annoying.

Here are four methods to remove or simply avoid adware and spyware without spending a dime on the latest “anti-virus” software.

1. USE Firefox. If you don’t use the Internet much, than perhaps you don’t know much about Firefox. All you need to know is that it is a browser that works REALLY well and has great security features.

2. Do NOT USE Internet Explorer. Internet Explorer is like Swiss cheese. It is open to the world by default. Microsoft is continually releasing patches to fix all the flaws in the Internet Explorer 6.X and lower versions of the browser. Although it can be “secured” by increasing the security it may loose much of its functionality once set to maximum security with certain exploitable features off.

3. Use a software or hardware firewall (not just Window XP Service Pack 2’s firewall). This may sound expensive and hard to do but it is not. If you have a DSL or broadband cable connection your Internet Service Provider (ISP) may have given you a DSL/Cable router with a firewall built in. All you have to do is turn it on. This may require you to take a few minutes to read the manual.

If your ISP did not give you a DSL or Cable broadband router with a built in firewall you can spend anywhere from $20 - $60 (or sometimes even cheaper with a mail-in rebate) to get a router. If you have DSL you will need a DSL router. If you have Cable broadband ISP you will need a Cable Router. Brands such as Linksys have built in firewalls and a feature called NAT, Network Address Translation, which is very effective since it hides your real IP address from the Internet. All routers come with instruction on how to hook them up. If you want to keep you computer security free, just use a free software firewall.

4. Remove Spyware/Adware with free Anti-spyware, anti-adware software. Lavasoft’s Adaware and Spybot Search & Destroy are two excellent methods of cleaning your system for free. Majorgeeks.com is a popular and trusted freeware site that has these and many other excellent spyware/adware cleaning and malware prevention tools (including free downloadable firewalls).

The best method is to use ALL of the above. Being proactive by surfing with a decent browser and getting a firewall is important, but it also helps to know about a couple of good anti-adware/spyware applications. If you get hit with a really nasty bit of malware that can not be cleaned with Adaware or Spybot, find yourself a geek. There are many great forums on the Internet dedicated to doing nothing but finding and cleaning such malware. Chances are if your system is infected with it, hundreds of others before you have been infected and have already figured out how to get rid of the malware.

Fighting Back Against Spyware - Spyware Doctor

Spyware and Viruses No Comments

Spyware is malicious software designed to run on your personal computer and tell its author or sender all about your activities. Spyware or Malware can track your every online move and report it live while you surf. Spyware programs are unknowingly downloaded everyday, everywhere by unsuspecting computer users at work and at home.

The result is slow moving computers, identity theft, lack of productivity and frustrating pop-ups. Why are hackers doing this? They want to sell your information, use your information or steal your identity. Many of them also benefit from your clicks on their banners through affiliate marketing and are relentless in trying to force you to play their game.

You can fight back. You can arm your computer with software that removes these malicious software programs from your computer. Extensive lists online exist of known offenders. Many freeware packages are really adware. Pop-ups that offer you a free download to boost your systems performance are very often disguised spyware programs. Free smiley faces and toolbars or free arcade video game downloads are often filled with spyware that will maliciously steal your information for potential illegal activities or at the very least, slow your computer to a crawl and annoy you. Many people have complained of unknown pornography sources filling their computer. Others have complained of having their homepage reset regularly to advertisement filled pages that they don’t want on their computer.

Programs do exist to combat this problem. A big question is regarding the use of free anti-spyware software versus products you have to pay for. Free spyware software may help you combat your problem but may be a program you have to continually run manually to get rid of spyware problems. Or, your free download may in fact be a fake software package that is really more Spyware itself and will further bog down your computer. Using a package that you have paid for will guarantee you results and should offer an automatic system that will continue to combat this problem for you as well as update itself to fight off the constant new threats that are out there every day.

You have the ability to arm your computer against attacks. You do not want your passwords, credit card information or other personal surfing and shopping habits broadcasted to a third party online. The risk is too great. You don’t want disgusting pop-ups turning up on your computer when your child is using it. Everyone wants to be able to use the Internet and benefit from the convenience of chatting, paying bills, shopping and storing personal files such as family photos. Be careful about what you download and watch for suspicious behavior. And most of all be sure you’ve armed your system to deal with these problems!

Arm Your PC Against Attacks

Spyware and Viruses No Comments

Anyone who uses the Internet needs to arm their personal computer against potential attacks from hackers. You need to install a reputable Antivirus program, keep the virus definitions up to date and allow the program to work when it runs. You also need to be aware of the sites you are visiting and watch for suspicious behavior of the websites you use online. Be cautious when you enter passwords that you are in the right site and that the security certificate matches. When doing online banking, for example, you should see https:// www. yourbank .com the -s- after http is an indication of -secure-. In the bottom right hand corner of your screen you should also see a padlock indicating the security of the website.

Is this enough? Unfortunately, it’s not.

Hackers and Spyware authors send malicious software out into cyberspace every day looking to prey on unsuspecting individuals. These packages can come in disguise. They can look like shareware or freeware, they can be free toolbars or system enhancers, and they can be embedded in an executable file disguised as a short movie or joke. There are a number of ways for these products to infiltrate your computer.

Using an anti-spyware software package to arm your pc against these attacks is as critical as guarding your passwords or installing Antivirus on your system. You need to safeguard your privacy and your identity. Although that bank website might be safe on the bank’s end, on your end your computer may have a sneaky little program in the background recording every keystroke that you type. This could create huge problems and headaches for you.

A software package should not only clear existing spyware off your computer but should also continually search for new threats much in the same way antivirus software continually searches new viruses. Spyware software should update its definitions for the latest spyware programs that come out and should let you know what it’s doing on your computer and what it’s found.

The consequence of not using software to combat this problem could be considerable wasted time on your part waiting on slow moving programs, exiting out of annoying pop-ups or worse, identity theft and loss of privacy.

Imagine your computer out there exposed to bullets flying freeform everywhere (the spyware) and the spyware software a catcher’s mitt that catches the spyware and stops it from scoring a home run by stealing your information from your computer.

Computers Worms: The Greatest Threat You’ve Never Seen

Spyware and Viruses No Comments

If you worry about computer security, then worms are probably near the top of your list. Although much has been done to combat the threat posed by spyware and adware, computer worms and viruses pose a constant, and constantly changing threat. The following information contains useful background from the fine contributors to Wikipedia and may help you avoid this potent danger.

In short, a computer worm is a self-replicating computer program. It uses a network to send copies of
itself to other systems and it may do so without any user intervention. Unlike a virus, it does not need to attach itself to an existing program. In general, worms always harm the network and consume bandwidth, whereas viruses always infect or corrupt files on a targeted computer.

Email worms spread via email messages. Typically the worm will arrive as email, where the message body or attachment contains the worm code, but it may also link to code on an external website. Poor design aside, most email systems requires the user to explicitly open an attachment to activate the worm, but “social engineering” can often successfully be used to encourage this; as the author of the “Anna Kournikova” worm set out to prove. Once activated the worm will send itself out using either local email systems or directly using SMTP. The addresses it sends to are often harvested from the infected computers email system or files, which can be embarrasing and compromise personal identity. Therefore recipients of email worms should assume that they are not sent by the person listed in the ‘From’ field of e-mail message (sender’s address).

Instant messaging worms spread via instant messaging applications by sending links to infected websites to everyone on the local contact list. The only difference between these and email worms is the way chosen to send the links.

With IRC worms, chat channels are the main target and the same infection/spreading method is used as above: sending infected files or links to infected websites. Infected file sending is less effective as the recipient needs to confirm receipt, save the file and open it before infection will take place.

File-sharing networks worms copy themselves into a shared folder, most likely located on the local machine. The worm will place a copy of itself in a shared folder under a harmless name. Now the worm is ready for download via the P2P network and spreading of the infected file will continue.

Internet worms are those which target low level TCP/IP ports directly, rather than going via higher level protocols such as email or IRC. A classic example is “Blaster” which exploited a vulnerability in Microsoft’s RPC. An infected machine aggressivly scans random computers on both its local networ and the public internet attempting an exploit against port 135 which, if successful, spreads the worm to that machine.

Users need to be wary of opening unexpected email, and certainly should not run attached files or programs, or visit web sites which such email link to. However, as the ILOVEYOU showed long ago, and phishing attacks continue to prove, tricking a percentage of users will always be possible.

Anti-virus and anti-spyware software are helpful, but must be kept up-to-date with new pattern files every few days at least.

Spyware Removal Software Can be a Cheap Computer Fix

Spyware and Viruses No Comments

Cyberspace is, for some, a mysterious frontier full of unknowns. Some of those unknowns are wonderful things, tools to make your life easier or more entertaining. The Internet is a must have for most people in their homes and in their offices. Using the net can lead to awesome productivity for businesses. Using the net as an entertainment and research tool is also extremely popular among avid computer users. More and more individuals are using it for social networking too. Students use it for school related work, businesses use it to grow, people use it to entertain themselves and keep up on current events or for entertainment value and staying in touch with others. The Internet is a fabulous thing.

But unfortunately, the Internet is full of little programs that want to work their way into the background of your computer. These programs are referred to by many as Spyware, Adware, Malware or even Badware. Spyware can be used for a number of purposes and using an unprotected computer can lead to major problems for users.

Why should you use a program that you have to buy instead of downloading one of the many freeware programs out there? First of all, if you download a free trial, you have no idea how effective it will be. It may, in fact, be another Spyware program masquerading as an anti-spyware tool. This is a ploy by many spyware publishers, to further infect your system by posing as a solution to your problem.

Secondly, most freeware programs don’t continuously update in the background to protect your system on an ongoing basis. Ensuring that you not only can get rid of the Spyware but stay rid of it is an important element in choosing the right tool to help.

Spyware can be frustrating to deal with and many individuals have gotten flustered enough that they’ve actually bought new computers out of the frustration of dealing with their slow systems, unaware that a simple and relatively inexpensive Spyware fighting program could’ve saved them hundreds or thousands of dollars in allowing their existing computer to do it’s job for a few more years.

Spyware is frustrating, dangerous and intrusive. Arming your system with tools to protect you from spyware is as important as using antivirus on your computer and safeguarding your passwords. Don’t let someone sneak into your computer and steal your information, blast spyware back out into cyberspace!

Stop Spyware From Stealing Your Identity

Spyware and Viruses No Comments

Spyware can do harmful things on your computer. You could innocently install a program that promised to boost your computer’s speed and increase system performance when really that program is a Trojan horse that sneakily installs Spyware, Adware or Malware on your computer.

Some programs do little more than annoy you with advertising pop-ups that try to attract your clicks or membership. Some of these programs fill your computer with pornography which can turn up when anyone is using the computer including your Grandmother that loves to play online Solitaire or your child that wants to visit their favorite cartoon’s website.

Other programs can do more than annoy you. They can steal your private information. Perhaps you’ve gone online to renew your driver’s license or pay your credit card or telephone bill. You’ve entered all your information into an encrypted program and you feel safe and comfortable about what you’ve done.

But, it’s possible that a program on your system is actually recording your every key stroke and sending it out to a third party who may use your details to apply for credit cards, or bank accounts and could do any number of illegal things with your information including selling false identification to illegal immigrants. This may sound far fetched but be assured, this is happening and illegal theft identity is a huge problem today.

Arming your computer with anti-virus software and even a firewall isn’t enough to combat these problems. You need to install a program to clean your system. Many users install this program expecting no problems and are astounded to find several Adware programs on their computer. There’s nothing they can do about what’s already happened but the newly installed program can help them in the future. The program can not only delete unwanted programs from your computer now but also prevent you from being infected in the future. A Spyware program that auto-updates in the background while you work or play and protects your privacy is ideal.

Many people simply restore their infected program to an earlier date when they find that the computer is slow or that their homepage continues to be reset each time they go online. Without adequate software to battle this problem on an ongoing basis, the user will simply find themselves continually restoring their computer without knowing just how much of their personal data has been transmitted online against their will.

Why Spyware Can Hurt You

Spyware and Viruses No Comments

Spyware can cause major problems for home and for business computer users. Steps need to be taken to prevent your computer from being infected by these programs that can steal information from you and use it for their own benefit and to your own detriment.

Spyware can be lurking on any computer at any time. Some programs are particularly evident because they place big restrictions on your computer’s performance and flood your screen with pop-up advertisements. Other programs can be a bit more difficult to discover. As Adware and Spyware publishers get more creative, their programs can be difficult to detect. Multiple programs can be running on any unprotected computer at any given time.

Identity theft is a big problem today. Spyware programs can run in the background on your computer while you complete everyday tasks such as paying your bills online or doing some online shopping. Spyware can record your instant messaging conversations, track every website you visit and look at every keystroke you type (whether you save it or not). Everything on your computer hard drive can be compressed into little files and sent out to someone’s email address and tells all kinds of your personal details. Photographs, e-mails and passwords can all be sent out in real time every time you connect to the Internet.

If your company computer becomes infected, this could cause major problems for your company with respect to trade secrets and other confidential information. Sharing files can spread these programs like wildfire. Many executable shareware programs can launch Adware in the form of an unobtrusive looking toolbar on your computer meant to make your life easier when in reality it’s a cloaked Spyware program.

It’s not always easy to avoid Spyware and prevent it from infecting your system. Through freeware, a download on a program such as Kazaa or Shareaza can easily infect your computer. It could be with something that seems as harmless as a few annoying pop-ups and slowed resources or something quite serious could be going on such as keyloggers tracking your passwords where destruction could be happening online with your credentials being listed as the culprit.

Running a Spyware fighting program can combat this problem if you’re unfortunate enough to already be infected.
If you believe your computer is clean of these types of problems, you should arm yourself now. Fighting offensively against potential attacks is the best strategy to protect yourself and your privacy online.

Looking For Anti-Spyware Registration Code? How To Deal With Spyware

Spyware and Viruses No Comments

A spyware is a software that collects information from a computer with internet connection without the owner’s knowledge and relays it to another person. Spyware is programming that is put in someone’s computer to secretly gather information about the user and send them to interested persons.

Spyware runs as a separate program and as such can monitor what you are doing at anytime on the internet and send that information back to someone else. Some spyware will even collect all of your keystrokes, collecting your personal information and credit card numbers. Once the software is installed, the spyware software usually monitors a user’s activity on the internet and transmits that information in the background to someone else.

Spyware can collect many different types of information about you, the user. He will either use it for advertising/marketing purposes or sell the information to another party. The Firewall utility Hackers use viruses and Trojan Horses to find unprotected computers and access them to delete information, steal personal information or corrupt the files.

Most often this information is a record of a victim’s ongoing browsing habits, downloads, or it could be more personal data like the victim’s name and address Spyware is part of an overall public concern about privacy on the Internet. The registry of a computer proactively upgrades the information and data in its records.

Simply put, spyware is a program that watches what you do on your computer and then sends this information about you over the Internet.

Rather, it detects cookies, files, directories, registry entries, index files and other personal information on your system and sends that information over the Internet to it’s designer.

There are some cranks who spread spyware to gather even more personal information such as you credit card number and other information that will allow them to use the card such as the CVV number. Spyware can record all information entered via the keyboard and the pointing device and send this information to the person who made the program.

The spyware will reside covertly in the operating system and load itself to the system memory and run in the background carrying out its deadly task of compiling user information and personal data such as usernames and passwords as well as credit card information.

Officials at Mailshell said it is important for security purposes to bring together anti-spam and anti-spyware efforts. It is necessary for personal and business network computers to find and use an anti-spyware program that will not only scan for current infection but also protect your computer while you are online. I mean, we have all seen those blinking banners about free anti-spyware programs, haven’t we.

When I did a little research I quickly found out that a lot of the so called anti-spyware programs heavily marketed in banner advertisements online are actually fake anti-spyware programs.

A good anti-spyware program should also be capable of alerting you when a spyware program tries to infect your computer. You should therefore look for a spyware blocker and remover when you choose an anti-Spyware program, since such programs offers more protection than the basic scanning programs.

In the beginning, most anti-spyware programs were focused on finding existing Spyware in the computer and removing them. Thankfully, companies which make antivirus programs are now integrating anti-spyware components within their software. Until then users should download, install and regularly use some sort of anti-spyware software.

Most anti-spyware software makers lump adware (that stuff which gets installed because it’s free or cheap), BHOs (browser helper objects - stuff that suddenly appears on your browser), distributed attack tools, keystroke loggers, pcp software, tracking cookies, and unauthorized remote admin tools in the same global spyware box.

If you can’t do that without your employees spiking your coffee with diet sugar until you ‘fix’ their computer back, then the only other option is anti-spyware software. Executives at XBlock believe the use of anti-spyware tools on the ExactSeek toolbar will not offer computer users a complete defense against spyware but it will protect computers from the most prevalent spyware, adware, keylogger and trojan problems.

Install anti-spyware software. Once you have successfully found and removed the malicious spyware infections you best defense against future spyware invasions is to purchase anti-spyware software that will actively protect your computer from new spyware intrusions.

With the demand for anti-spyware tools continuously on the rise because of the constant release of new and more invasive spyware scams, computer users may find themselves falling victim to malicious software downloads while searching for the right spyware removal tool.

Beware Of Free Adware Removers

Spyware and Viruses No Comments

Nearly 90% of all computers accessing the internet are infected with some form of adware. Of those, an average of 24 adware programs were found hiding inside their systems. Like anti-virus software, anti-spyware software relies on databases of known rogue programs that must be updated weekly to be effective.

When choosing your adware spyware program make sure you decide on a reputable company as some spyware removal programs once installed, have also been known to have installed spyware alongside your spyware program and of course will never be detected by your installed spyware program.

Adware or Spyware as it is also known by is a malicious program or should I say programs that infect your computer with adware. Some of these adware programs are harmless and are really only a minor annoyance and can be cleaned from your system easily with nearly all adware remover programs.

Termed as ‘malware’ the redefinition of spyware, the programs can slow down programs and connection. Some programs like Winfixer 2005 will often load on boot up, take up your computer memory, cause a computer to display system errors, spawn multiple pop-up windows and even shut down itself. Some spyware programs display messages asking for your permission to install the application.

Don’t settle for advertisements that sell $30 software programs that claim to remove all these annoyances, when in reality all they do is hog system resources and slow your computer down even more.

Also included is information about a free anti-virus tool that can get rid of viruses even commercial anti-virus programs can’t detect. There are currently over 78,000 Spyware and Adware programs on the Internet that can affect your PC.

Beware of freeware and shareware programs as they usually install spyware as well, without the user’s knowledge. Infecting your computer silently (usually installed with programs that seem harmless), spyware and adware can collect personal information about you, as well as cause pop up ads to come up all of the time, changing your browsers home page, sometimes even completely disabling your computer’s usability.

Take all of the programs that you have chosen to use, download, and install them. Spyware and adware programs also slow down the speed of your computer by cluttering your hard drive with annoying programs. Spyware compromises the security of your personal information because the creators of these hidden programs can get access to your desktop even while you are offline.

Remember, free adware removers and free anti spyware software usually contains spyware. Because free adware removers and free anti-spyware software is often designed to trick you into installing more adware and spyware on your computer, it is best to stay away from this. There are also some spyware removers that are free, but they are not up to date, and they will not get rid of all of your spyware.

With the mass realisation of the threat of adware and spyware in the last couple of years, there is now literally hundreds of spyware and adware removers online. Actually there are some adware and spyware removers that install spyware on your computer without you knowledge.

Is Spyware Killing Your Computer?

Spyware and Viruses No Comments

If you’ve been on the internet for any length of time, you’ve probably heard of spyware and how damaging it can be to your computer. Just what is spyware, anyway? And is there any chance that it could be killing your computer?

Spyware is, by definition, malicious software which unscrupulous people use in order to take control of someone else’s computer without their consent. The perpetrators of spyware use the information they glean from your computer for their own benefit and purposes. Usually, spyware keecomps track of what you are doing with your computer, sends the information to ad websites, who in turn blast you with pop-ups more or less suited to your interests.

Some spyware programs, however, are designed for the purpose of stealing your identity. There are even programs called “anti-spyware” which are really just pretending to be helpful. They are in reality causing problems. Downloads, such as toolbars, are a prime source of spyware, so always be careful about such freebies. Also, be careful if you use Internet Explorer as your web browser, because more spyware is targeted at it than at other web browsers.

If your computer has become infected with spyware, you will probably have problems with your computer’s performance. It can cause the computer to operate more slowly, or even cause a system crash. It can also cause you to have trouble making your connection to the Internet.

Spyware usually doesn’t show up as a single program on your computer. More commonly, you will have many spyware programs if you have one. The effect of these unwanted programs usually becomes visible when your computer becomes much slower. Some of the spyware programs cause your firewall or anti-virus programs to stop working. In fact, sometimes one spyware program will disable another!

One reason that spyware slows down your computer is that it takes up the available disk space the computer would normally use in opening and running programs. Spyware is also designed to intertwine into your other programs so that it is difficult to remove.

Spyware also negatively affects the performance of your web browser so that you are bombarded with advertisements when you simply want to browse. Spyware can cause the settings of your web browser to change, and it can cause unwanted toolbars to appear on your computer.

Fortunately, there are legitimate and effective anti-spyware programs available for your computer. To be on the safe side, you should use such a program that is produced by one of the major creators of anti-virus software, firewalls, and the like. A couple of reliable companies are McAffee and AVG. Be suspicious of pop-up ads for free anti-spyware programs, because these are likely to actually be spyware.

A final comment about anti-spyware programs is that they, like anti-virus and other security programs, require you to make frequent updates. These can seem like a nuisance, but they are essential to keeping things operating smoothly. Considering the millions of people who are using the Internet at any time, it’s easy to see why updates would have to be made often.

Anti Virus Checkers: How Do We Protect Ourselves ?

Spyware and Viruses No Comments

How did we ever survive without our computers. It’s almost inconceivable to think that we didn’t hardly need these daily helpers in our homes a decade ago. Like coffee, computers seem to be one of those things that you can’t live without once you’ve tried them. Our PCs and Macs aid us on an incomparable level these days, and we certainly don’t want to return to the old ways. While these phenomenal machines continuously provide us with access to the world, we have to keep a close eye on them to ensure their safety. After all, computer viruses are always updating like our handy machines.

Now days it is always wise to do an anti virus check on your computer regularly. Those nasty little bugs will crawl into your hard drive and take up residence with no plans of leaving. They will destroy your system from the inside out. Fortunately we don’t have to allow this. There are a number of software options at you disposal in order to do an anti virus check. This way you can scan your computer completely for any unwanted predators. The anti virus check will not only locate the viruses, but also contain them so you can further delete them from existence. If you’ve never had a virus in your computer, consider yourself lucky, because it can ruin everything.

I first delved into the world of anti virus software when my PC went on the fritz a few years back. I couldn’t understand what the darn thing was doing. It was virtually nonfunctional in every way. It drove me insane. All I needed was to complete a mid-term, but the computer wouldn’t allow it. After going berserk, I call my brother who is a computer technician. He smirked and told me that I probably had a virus. He asked if I had tried an anti virus check. Before I new it, he had located the virus and was trying to contain it. This will basically keep it separate from your computer, then hopefully it can be completely removed.

Computer viruses are all over the place. Probably the most likely source of infection is your own email. You always have to be careful what you open. It could be a virus. Luckily many of our email service providers have a standard anti virus check as part of there program. This way the email will be scanned before you open any downloads. If you think your computer may be infected with a virus, check and see if you already have anti virus software installed. If you do, run a standard anti virus check. You can set these to run as often as you like. This way you ensure your computer of avoiding all viruses.

Exterminate Spyware Fast and Easy

Spyware and Viruses No Comments

Spyware removal has become a tedious work. As the spyware threat has worsened, a number of techniques have emerged to counteract it. Among these are

SPYWARE - Know your enemy

Spyware and Viruses No Comments

Spyware is a term that has become quite common to hear.

But what kind of program is it really?

It can be explained as, a broad category of malicious software designed to intercept or take partial control of a computer’s operation without the “known” consent of that machine’s owner or user .

The term is being used quite loosely and includes a number of different programs. The thing they all have in common, is that they monitor the computer and/or user and share information with a third party. With or without the consent of the computer’s owner.

Malware has become widely used and they manifest themselves as software, plugins or help files to other programs you want or need, and if you accept their policies and term of usage, you also accept the fact that these malware programs will be installed and used.

They are normally not directly malicious as are the secret spyware, but they do send out information from your computer to a third party. Most commonly some kind of habit tracing or statistics of surfing or similar. In most cases the information is completely anonymous and do not pose any kind of threat to you as an individual.

Is it a virus or not?

Spyware differs from viruses and worms in that it does not usually self-replicate. Like many recent viruses, however, spyware - by design - exploits infected computers for commercial gain.

Typical tactics furthering this goal include delivery of unsolicited pop-up advertisements; theft of personal information (including financial information such as credit card numbers); monitoring of Web-browsing activity for marketing purposes; or routing of HTTP requests to advertising sites.

These things are very hard to keep track of and to know if one of these programs is alive in your computer or if pop ups and other changes in your surfing programs behaviour should occur as a part of a good process is almost impossible to know.

The only reliable way to know if an evil programa is living and thriving inside your computer, is to install and use a good spyware removal program.

Common ways of infection?

They do not spread like a computer virus or worm. Instead, spyware installs on your computer through deception or exploitation of software vulnerabilities.

Trojan horses!

A Trojan horse, by definition, smuggles in something dangerous in the guise of something desirable. So malware often hide as an add on to some other program you really want.

Bundled Installations

It can also come bundled with shareware or other downloadable software, as well as music CDs. The user downloads a program (for instance, a music program or a file-trading utility) and installs it, and the installer additionally installs the spyware. Although the desirable software itself may do no harm, the unwanted software does.

Manipulating Security Features

Another way of distributing all kinds of intrusive software is by tricking users by manipulating security features designed to prevent unwanted installations. Internet browsers like Internet Explorer for example are easy targets t this method. Everybody has them and use them online almost daily. The way you protect yourself against this, is to always keep your operating system up to date when it comes to security updates.

Use Microsoft Update regularly (and often).

Examples of Software to avoid

As with computer viruses, researchers give names to spyware programs which frequently do not relate to any names that the writers use. Researchers may group programs into “families” based not on shared program code, but on common behaviours, or by “following the money” or apparent financial or business connections.

For instance, a number of the spyware programs distributed by Claria are collectively known as “Gator”. Likewise, programs which are frequently installed together may be described as parts of the same software package, even if they function separately.

It is also important to know that different anti spyware program creators and big antivirus software creators may have different names for the save spyware. This can cause you to believe that you have 2 or more malicious products installed when you actually only have one, but mentioned with different names.

* CoolWebSearch, a group of programs, installs through the exploitation of Internet Explorer vulnerabilities. The programs direct traffic to advertisements on Web sites including coolwebsearch. To make this happen, they display pop-up ads, rewrite search engine results, and alter the infected computer’s hosts file to direct DNS lookups to these sites.

* Internet Optimizer, also known as DyFuCa, redirects Internet Explorer error pages to advertising. When users follow a broken link or enter an erroneous URL, they see a page of advertisements. However, because password-protected Web sites (HTTP Basic authentication) use the same mechanism as HTTP errors, Internet Optimizer makes it impossible for the user to access password-protected sites.

* 180 Solutions transmits extensive information to advertisers about the Web sites which users visit. It also alters HTTP requests for affiliate advertisements linked from a Web site, so that the advertisements make unearned profit for the 180 Solutions company. It opens pop-up ads that cover over the Web sites of competing companies.

Toolbars from any other then the big players like Google, Yahoo, Msn and similar very often contains spyware to some degree today.

And even the big guns have started to incorporate “spyware like” statistics gather from their toolbars. They do tell you about them, and ask for your permission to install or active these routines. But they often do it in such a convoluted way, no one actually understand it.

So start out the day by cleaning your computer and then working. Make sure you have a restful safe day, download, scan and clean your computer from any bad or malicious software today …

Kenth “The Designer” Nasstrom writes about spyware, and other non wanted software. You should find out how to remove unwated software from your computer now and reduce the risks.

Is Your Computer Diseased ?

Spyware and Viruses No Comments

Somewhere out there in cyberspace are malicious vandals hard at work dreaming up new computer viruses. Eugene Kaspersky, (of Kaspersky Lab Virus Research), in a November 23, 2005 article posted in Security News, said, “The number of new viruses and Trojans is now increasing every day by a few hundred. (Our) virus lab receives between 200 and 300 new samples a day.” That is Not a misprint. He said 200-300 per DAY!

The worst ones we hear about. The large majority are quiet and anonymous like termites, often doing much damage before they are detected. Like human viruses, their effects run the spectrum from mostly benign to potentially fatal to their unwilling and unwitting hosts. Also as in human viruses, there are two different approaches to dealing with them: Prevention and Cure.

Preventing virus infection begins with guarding the portals of contact. Do not open suspicious e-mails or attachments without scanning them first. Most anti-virus programs have a right-click option to scan a selected file for viruses, which makes scanning easy. Similarly, when you download software, eBooks or whatever, always save to a file, then scan the file before opening. If you bring in data or software by floppy disk, CD or other portable media, the same rule applies; scan it first!

A good firewall can help somewhat in keeping viruses at bay, but there are too many ways to hide them in regular data or software transfers for a firewall to catch them all. A firewall (like chicken soup for human flu) can help, but don’t rely on that alone.

As Benjamin Franklin said, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” However, sooner or later, some viruses are going to get through your defenses somehow, and you will need to turn to cures.

If you should get hit by a really bad virus, you could lose most of your files before you know that there is a problem! The first step to enable cures is to prepare well in advance, positioning and backing up your files for easy recovery. Set up your computer with a small hard drive (4-10giga) for your C: drive and a much larger hard drive for all your data. Use your C: drive for programs only. Keep copies of your software purchase receipts, registration and activation codes and setup info in a file on your data drive. You can always download them again, if you can give the seller your purchase info to show that you already bought.

Almost all virus infections will be in the program section of the C: drive, so scan it daily. This won’t take much time since you have arranged for it to be relatively small. Then scan your (larger)data drive once or twice a month.

You should still back up your data files frequently. If you cannot backup everything, at least backup the crucial information that would be difficult or impossible to replace. CD and DVD burners are a good way to do this backup, as are removable hard drives.

Finally, you will need good anti-virus programs to go after the viruses and either quarantine or (preferably) destroy them. There are many anti-virus solutions being touted and hyped out there. Some are good, most are not. Here is how to find the good ones:

1. Look for programs that offer both active and passive protection. Active protection means that part of the program remains memory-resident, actively watching for potential incoming viruses. When they detect a virus they can sound an alarm and give you a series of options for dealing with it. Passive or on-demand protection will let you ask for a scan of specified areas when you want it, but it waits for you to ask.

2. Select your anti-virus software based on the recommendations of independent testing agencies. Checkmark (by westcoastlabs.org), AV-test.org and PC World magazine are among the most respected independent testers of anti-virus software. For ratings of anti-trojan software, check with Anti-trojan - Forum. Use more than one anti-virus and anti-trojan program. Very few detect all problems, but what one program misses, another may find and defeat.

3. Keep your anti-virus programs up to date. There is a running gun battle going on between virus writer-disseminators and virus catch-and-destroy experts. New viruses are found; new anti-virus program patches to find and destroy them are usually ready within hours or days. Until your software is updated, you are still vulnerable to the new viruses.

In addition to using anti-virus software on your personal computer, consider using an Internet Service Provider or e-mail service that includes server-side anti-virus and spam e-mail filtering as a third layer of protection.

In summary, be careful, get good software, run it often and update it frequently… and stay alert to new developments! This struggle between new viruses and better anti-virus software is ongoing, and developing rapidly.

Evidence Nuker Review

Our lives are an open book. All of the places that we visit online and all of the sites that we see are all taken down and recorded on our hard drives, all of it. Can you image what that kind of thing could do to you if the information got into the wrong hands? Your boss could let you go from your dream job and your wife! Well, let’s just say that for many men the scene could get real ugly real fast if you know what I mean. But those kinds of things are not the only reason it can be handy to get rid of the evidence. When you are in business a lot goes into keeping things private but if you have been working on your computer, and of course you have, all of that secret private info is available to anyone who gets near your PC. That is why you need to take steps to make sure that all of that info cannot be accessed and to do that you need special programs. These will get rid of any and all evidence of your past computer habits and allow you to maybe get some sleep at night!

Evidence Nuker is one of the most powerful tools for doing this to hit the shelves in some time. It will teach you so many things that you didn’t know about computers and software. It is not just about hiding things, it is about protecting them too and that is why I loved it so much. I like to learn new things and when I can actually use them in everyday life it is just a bonus. I have used these new skills many times already.

I happen to run my own business and a lot of the information I deal with is very private. I cannot have the files laying around where anyone can get their grubby little paws onto it, if they did I could lose my job and get sued for millions of dollars. Not only that but the client could lose at least that much and it would be all my fault. That would be terrible and I would feel just awful, that is why I love Evidence Nuker so much. It was easy and from the minute I started reading I started learning as well.

For example, you know when you delete things on your computer they are not really being deleted at all in most cases? All you are doing is deleting their name, but the information contained in the file is all still there hiding in your hard drive. Why do you think that cops are always so keen to take the computers to their labs to have their experts go over it? It is because they know that most of us don’t know a thing about how computers and their memories really work. This kind of ignorance is getting people in a lot of trouble all over the world and while this can be a good thing in terms of crimes and such it is not a good thing when it means you lose business.

I have never had to worry about this kind of thing anymore. Now I know that my files are gone and no one can use them for their own nefarious purposes. That is important to me and my clients and I appreciate it fully.

Windows Registry Cleaner Checklist

Spyware and Viruses No Comments

Over 92% of computers are infected with Adware and spyware. Such software is rarely accompanied by uninstall utility and even when it is it almost always leaves broken Windows Registry keys behind it. Even if you have an anti-spyware tool your Windows Registry might be broken - developers of those tools are focused on removing Adware and spyware functionality, not every trace of software itself.

Another category of software that is known to leave bits and pieces behind on uninstallation is games. There are a lot of special installation systems that creates strange files, unique entries in your registry file as well as changes system dll’s to other versions. Once you uninstall the game a lot of the special installation changes it made will be left behind, causing you problems.

You should run an advanced registry cleaner for Windows that allows you to safely scan, clean, and repair registry problems with a few simple mouse clicks on a regular basis.

Problems with the Windows Registry are a common cause of Windows crashes (blue screens) and error messages (memory as well as disk errors). By using a PC tune-up utility, your system will be more stable, your software will run quicker, and your operating system will boot faster.

Registry problems can occur for many reasons, including references left behind after uninstallation; incorrect removal of software; missing or corrupt hardware drivers; or orphaned start-up programs. With a few easy steps, a good registry cleaner will scan your entire registry for any invalid entries and provide a list of the errors found.

You then can choose to clean each item or automatically repair them all after making a backup without the need for a registry editor such as Regedit.

To help people choose a product have we created this short checklist.

A good windows registry clean and repair product should have the following options.

Automatic Scan
To facilitate your windows registry scan. This is the simplest way to clean up the registry. Automatic Scan is recommended for ‘non-technical’ users.

Custom Scans
You customize your search and scan Windows registry for particular types of errors (shared DLLs, missing fonts, invalid start-up entries, etc.).

Manual Cleanup
After the scan is complete, the program should show you a full list of errors with details, broken down by types and let you fix individual invalid entries or all invalid entries of a certain type.

Backup and Undo
Before removing an entry from your registry, should an automatic creation of a backup file be done, that can be used to undo the changes. This to avoid changes without backup.

Scheduler
To schedule the program to scan the registry whenever you start your computer.

Using software like this is not a one time fix. You must run it on a regular basis to keep your registry clean and without errors. This will help the stability and speed of windows.

We have tested a number of registry fix and clean utilities and present our top 3 list on our site for your convenience.

What is The Windows Registry?

Spyware and Viruses No Comments

The Windows registry is a database which stores settings and options for the operating system for Microsoft Windows 32-bit versions, 64-bit versions and Windows Mobile.

It contains information and settings for all the hardware, software, users, and preferences of the PC. Whenever a user makes changes to “Control Panel” settings, or file associations, system policies, or installed software, the changes are reflected and stored in the registry.

The registry is actually a big file where a lot of setting can be stored.

This file has been around quite a while and has had different names.

The first windows version that used the windows registry to store settings was windows 3.11 and the registry in that version of windows was called Reg.dat.

In Windows 95 & 98 the registry files are named User.dat and System.dat and are stored in the Windows directory.

Windows ME called the registry files, Classes.dat, User.dat, and System.dat and stored them in the Windows directory.

Finally the newest versions of windows like, Windows NT, 2000, 2003, & XP stores the registry files like this,

Registry Bot Review

Spyware and Viruses No Comments

If there is one thing that the average pleasure PC user and the average business PC user has in common it is the fact that they both hate it when their system crashes. There are few things on this great big green earth as frustrating as having your computer crash. It doesn’t matter if you are playing Pong or you are in the middle of an important Internet business meeting, when your computer crashes it makes you want to rip your hair out by the roots.

I used to have this problem all of the time and I would get those weird little error messages constantly and I never knew what the problem was. It was my registry and not only was this causing crashes and error messages it was why my computer was running so terribly slow all the time. It would take me hours just to do simple things, it was awful. So I talked to my IT guy and he mentioned a package called Registry Bot. I trusted him, he had been my go to guy for some time so I tried it out.

As soon as I started using Registry Bot I found out all kinds of things that were wrong and that had probably been wrong for some time. In mere seconds Registry Bot found the things I couldn’t find for what seemed like ages, it was great but you know what the best part was? It was free.

For exactly the cost of nothing I was informed what the problems were in my computer and what kinds of symptoms they were causing. This was great because I could then explain everything that had been happening. I am one of those literal kinds of people who have to understand it all before I can let it go. It is not enough for me that a problem gets fixed, I need to know why it happened in the first place and I got all of this from Registry Bot. I loved it.

One of my favorite things about Registry Bot is that it worked so quickly. In no time at all I was on my way to having a happy computer again. I could get back to work and I could play Pong until the cows came home, that is the good life.

Don’t be too freaked out when Registry Bot comes back telling you that there are hundreds of problems in your computer. This does happen often and there is a good chance that if you have been having a lot of trouble with your computer it will tell you exactly this. Registry Bot is a full service kind of program. It will not only tell you what all of the problems are, it will also fix them for you which it what we are all really looking for.

Anyone and everyone can get their computer scanned with Registry Bot for free and it will not take long at all and considering how it can find pretty much anything that is wrong with a computer I say it is well worth the little bit of time it takes. I have gotten my computer scanned and fixed up and from now on I will be using this when things go wrong on my computer. My IT guy is going to wish he never told me about this! Now he will be making a lot less money off of me from now on. So if you are sick and tired of a slow computer and you can’t seem to figure out what is wrong then you may want to give Registry Bot a try, it might be able to fix everything up for you.

3 Must Ask Questions When Purchasing a Spyware Remover

Spyware and Viruses No Comments

Spyware is one of several threats that can cause a surprising amount of damage to your computer. Along with that, spyware can help criminals carry out identity theft or other malicious activity. Since spyware is becoming more and more of a problem for computer users, many people are taking steps to combat this problem by purchasing spyware remover software. Security experts recommend this as part of a comprehensive strategy to limit the damage spyware can cause but there are some things you should look for in a good spyware remover. Here are my top 3 criteria for the average computer user.

1. Is the spyware remover easy to use?

When spyware infects your computer system, you don’t have time to be fumbling through a 30-page manual or in contact with customer support trying to figure out how the software works. Therefore, it should be pretty intuitive to use, even for the basic computer user and shouldn’t require you to be a computer whiz to understand how to scan your system.

2. Does the spyware remover offer real-time protection?

Real-time protection simply means that the software monitors programs as they start up, so that future instances of spyware have a greater chance of being detected and stopped before their even installed on your system or before they run for the first time. This is critical if you download a lot of software, including screensavers, games, or other applications.

3. Does the spyware remover allow you to schedule periodic scans?

The average computer user is far too busy to be concerned with keeping tabs on when the last time the computer was scanned for spyware was. Therefore, the anti-spyware program should have a feature, similar to what’s found in most anti-virus programs, which allows you to schedule periodic scans of your computer. That way, you can set things up once when you first purchase the software, and then you only have to take notice when something comes up in the scan. Of course with good computing practices and safe internet surfing habits, the chances of something being found go down dramatically.

Use these three criteria as a guideline for what to look for as you research different spyware remover programs. There are quite a few programs available, but by using these criteria, you can quickly narrow down the available options to the cream of the crop. And the good thing is that you usually don’t pay much more even though the software has these additional features.

Stop Leaving Your Personal Info at Risk And Protect Your Computer From Spyware Today

Spyware and Viruses No Comments

If you’re not running an anti-spyware program then your computer and your personal information could be left wide open for hackers to get their hands on…

Unfortunately, most computers have spyware on them or at least they’ve had it in the past. Your computer is most vulnerable if you frequently download free programs such as games, screen savers, free software applications or other tools. However, even if you don’t download this type of software, you could still unintentionally install spyware. Most of the time, spyware is installed along with another application so you might not even be aware you’re agreeing to have this extra spyware software installed.

The damage spyware can do can range from annoyance to downright criminal. Often times, spyware will rear it’s ugly head in the form of popups or other types of advertisements. These are annoying and can force you to see how fast you can close the windows before the new one pops open, but in general they aren’t particularly harmful.

On the other hand, some spyware can take up nearly all of your system resources as it “does its thing”, causing your computer to start to run slowly. Again, this is more annoying than harmful, at least on its surface. But eventually, this type of behavior can cause your system to operate unreliably, cause programs to freeze up or the computer to crash or restart. This can be particularly problematic if you use your computer for business, but even the casual computer user can end up with lost data, corrupted files or a computer that just doesn’t work like it should.

On the far end of the spectrum, you have the type of spyware that can lead to criminal activity such as identity theft and fraud. Some spyware programs use tools called keyloggers to monitor your keystrokes-yes, ALL of your keystrokes. This includes usernames and passwords you might use to carry out personal tasks like sending email, checking your bank accounts or ordering products online. Once this information is collected, it is sent (via the internet connection YOU are paying for) back to the spyware software creator. That person might just be doing this for the thrill of seeing what kind of info they can get, or they might have more malicious intent such as stealing your credit card information or other financial motives.

If you currently aren’t running an anti-spyware program, you should consider investing in one immediately. A good anti-spyware program is essential for today’s computer user, just like an anti-virus program however both tools are needed since they typically accomplish different tasks and are designed to find specific threats. With a good spyware program and some basic information on how to avoid it, you should be able to rest easy knowing your computer system has minimal chance of being compromised by spyware.

How to Get Rid of Adware and Remove it from Your Computer For Good

Spyware and Viruses No Comments

Adware is a category of malicious programs that are created in order to display advertisements, usually in the form of popups, on infected computers. These programs are usually innocuous, not causing any specific type of damage, but they are still nuisances to most computer users. If your computer is infected with adware, the good news is that there are ways to get rid of this annoyance, though it can be difficult since adware tends to come back or reinstall itself.

First, you should invest in a good quality adware remover. In fact, you should get a program that also scans for spyware since this should cover you in terms of adware as well. This should be used in addition to your anti-virus program, which is also an essential tool for the modern computer user. A spyware/adware remover will scan your system and list any potential adware programs that are found on your computer. Most programs will give you recommended actions and more information about each item they find. That way, you can do some quick research via the program or on the web to find out if what the scanner finds is something really harmful or just a false alarm. Yes, false alarms do happen, so don’t worry if you see a lot of items show up in the list once you run the scan…at least not at first. Just take each item one by one and determine if it’s really a problem.

There are free and paid programs available. Some companies allow you to download a free trial or do a free scan via the web. That way, you don’t have to invest in a program that you may not need and can still scan your computer. Of course, if you find something, you’ll have to pay for the full program but the good thing is, these programs are very affordable and usually come with free updates as new threats are found and added to the database.

If you’re being barraged with popup ads, especially if it’s happening even when you’re not online, it’s time to run a scan for adware and clean up your system. In addition, take a few minutes to educate yourself on the growing threat of adware, spyware and other internet dangers to your computer. As an informed user, you’re one step ahead of most and will be able to avoid most of these problems in the future.

What is Malware and What does it Mean?

Spyware and Viruses No Comments

Malware (short for MALicious SoftWARE) is a prominent threat in our increasingly connected world. In short, malware is any program created with the purpose of causing damage to a computer system or compromising the security of a computer system. Pretty much all the “internet nasties” you’ve heard of fall into the broad category of malware. These include viruses, worms, Trojans, keylogger, spyware, adware. Even SPAM might be considered associated with malware, though not malware itself, since it can be the means by which hackers get those other types of programs onto your system.

Viruses and worms function in the computer world much like they do in the real world in that they replicate themselves and pass from one carrier to another (be that a computer or a person, depending on which type you’re talking about). They can either spread on their own, or after the user takes some pre-determined action like opening an email, running a program, etc. It turns out that most of these programs are written to take advantage of Microsoft Windows Operating system rather than Macs or Unix/Linux systems. But that has a lot to do with the fact that there are many more Windows users than other types of operating systems.

Trojans get their name from the famous story of the Trojan Horse and operate in a similar fashion. Trojans get onto your system and hide there by appearing to be something else, a seemingly harmless file that when run, contains a “little extra something” that the user definitely isn’t expecting. The end result varies depending on what’s “inside the horse”, to continue the analogy. It might be a program that deletes everything on your C: drive, it might install another program or change an existing program. This is how spyware is passed along much of the time. For instance, you download a free screensaver, install it and at the same time, also install a program that monitors your keystrokes and sends that info back to a third party via the internet.

Spyware and adware are among the biggest threats now. They also create the biggest headaches for security experts since so many computer problems are now found to be caused by spyware. Spyware creators are usually motivated by profit rather than purely malicious desires as might be the case with a virus/worm creator. Spyware and adware are typically used to control a computer and drive the user to websites which the creator will profit from or for displaying advertising via popups, popunders, or other means. Spyware is usually installed as part of another software package without the user’s consent, or sometimes with their consent though they may not realized it. Often times, this implied consent is buried in the End User License Agreement (EULA) which the user must agree to prior to installing the program. By not reading or understanding the terms contained in the EULA, the user might be unintentionally agreeing to have spyware installed. Once installed, this might become a means for other spyware programs to also end up on that computer.

Malware certainly is a threat that you should be aware of, but there are measures you can take to minimize the chances your computer will be infected. There are three essential items you should have for good computer security. First, a good firewall, either a software or hardware firewall will do. Second, an anti-virus program. Third, an anti-spyware program or spyware remover. Ideally with these last two items, the programs will run on your computer from startup to shutdown, will monitor your programs as they start up, and will automatically update themselves with the latest threat database. That way, you can rest assured your computer is up-to-date and not have to spend unnecessary time managing your computer’s security.
