When we consign our children to public schools, we feel satisfied that they are receiving ‘quality education’. But, are we really getting our money are worth? More importantly, are the children gaining anything from this kind of a learning procedure?
Socialization is hailed as one of the greatest advantage of schools. This is the place where the child picks up the rudiments of social skills that help him survive. But in truth, a regular school-going child can interact only with his peers. He may bully younger children or fear older ones. He does not know how to behave with an adult. This is because in the school environment he interacts only with his peers. A homeschooling environment brings in a more natural social environment.
A regular school going child cannot read literature. He cannot keep silent or think in depth about any one thing. The artificial busyness imposed upon him by the school disallows quiet contemplation. Rowdy and destructive behaviour, as seen among peers, is more noticeable in school-goers.
There is little long-standing knowledge among regular school goers because most things are learnt for the exam. There is no correlation of facts with life. The child may know a lot, but understands very little. This is where the homeschoolers beat the regular school goers. Ultimately, homeschoolers emerge more adept at facing the outside world.
Financing homeschooling
When people talk about teaching their children from home in the absence of any definite or structured curriculum, it is perhaps natural to think that homeschooling is cheap. But this is far from the truth. Although homeschooling does not stick to any particular text, this is perhaps more of a bane than a boon, when it comes to finance.
When you need to make sure that your children receives state-of-the-art education so that they can compete with regular school goers, expenses will naturally mount. The actual cost of educating a child at home is surprisingly high. Up-to-date textbooks, course materials, a library, computing equipment, lighting, specially designed furniture all cost money. In this case, the cost may be slightly lesser when it comes to homeschooling the second child. Add to this any additional tuition cost for tutors who come to teach subjects that cannot be handled by parents, like higher-level math or science. The total cost can be a bit mind boggling.
If you take another important factor into consideration, homeschooling costs may effective triple. The need for having one of the parents tied to the house and fully dedicated to providing education deprives the family of a second earning member. The average homeschooling teacher is usually a lady with a college degree. This means that she can easily bring home a pay of $35,000 or more. It is also interesting to note that most families that have more than 2 children do not opt for homeschooling at all.
But, there are those who have been successful in carrying out homeschooling at low rates. This is dependent on the size of the family, the support group, and the type of materials used and the availability of the material. When successive children can reuse the materials, cost goes down. Much of the course material can be got from vendors of homeschooling materials. A membership in a public library, theatre, concerts, ballets and other cultural events also help in cutting costs. Sometimes, it is even possible to barter expertise. For instance, the mother of an 8-year old gives dancing classes, and her daughter receives drawing classes for free. Support groups allow you to divide the cost of field trips, science projects and fairs.
Whatever the cost, advocates of homeschooling say that the benefits far outweigh these considerations. When you are able to decide what knowledge your child receives and when he or she should be taught and to what extent, it gives you a lot of freedom and a lot of power. Both the children as well as the parents benefit from this mutually enriching experience.

You stand in line at your textbook sell back, you hand over your textbook, apparently the equivalent of solid silver just a few months ago. And then the clerk hands you a couple of twenties and says next. Read here why I stopped going to the textbook sell back on campus and made my own arrangements to sell my textbooks, and how you can get reference books for less.
I wrote this article to convince you that any textbook sell back will benefit you more than keeping those books. And I offer a strategy to build a great reference library for less.
My $100 Wake Up Call: A Business Law Textbook
As an undergrad engineering student, I kept nearly every textbook, sell back wasn’t on my schedule. I wanted a reference library, I said. Then, I went back to school for an MBA. I had to take business law, and the book was more than $125. I was stunned.
I found the book at about $100 online and bought it, took my class and seethed. This was my 6th MBA class - I as in an evening program - and I had kept all the books from my previous classes. I was going to build a textbook reference library again, I thought.
Then, I was walking through a thrift store. Not a used bookstore mind you, just a secondhand store. You know, donate, and a church or other charity runs it to help the less fortunate.
And there on the shelf was my book, one edition old - I bought the 8th edition, they had the 7th - for $3.
Yeah, $3. And thrift stores are tax exempt in my area.
I immediately sold every textbook I had used for my MBA classes, and several of my other books that had any value. I consider it one of my best business decisions
Why clean off your shelf?
Textbook sell back shows the situation perfectly. You pay hard earned money for a new or used textbook, take the class, then try to sell it back. The school only has funds to buy back the number of used textbooks they need, frequently leaving you holding yours to keep. You end up with a valuable doorstop, or a nice book end about physics. An expensive book you don’t need.
My library was the same in a way. I had valuable textbooks wasting away on my shelves. Or, I could do my own textbook sell back and then buy older versions at a fraction of the price to fill my library. Which is what I do now.
For instance, the $3 seventh edition textbook I mentioned earlier? It’s on my shelf as I write this. I also bought a strategic management textbook, same authors, 1 edition back, maybe one or two missing chapters from the one I used in class (I can’t remember now if I read those chapters or not) also for a whopping $3. It makes me smile to tell you this :o) and I hope you get the message.
Textbook Sell Back and Your College Frig
Books you buy for school have a limited shelf life, like cottage cheese, Lettuce and sour cream. Their value holds until the next edition comes out. But just like a potato you have to skin, any current edition textbook, almost no matter the condition, has value. Whether it has a missing cover, excessive highlighting, notes written in the margin, or even dog ears (the worst), you can have your own textbook sell back if the new edition has not hit the shelves yet.
High prices on textbooks are for a good cause: trying to bring you the best information for your money and give you a great education. Professors use textbooks because then they don’t have to come up with the material to teach themselves, and the books also help meet accreditation requirements to cover all the important stuff in a certain topic.
But it can cost you hundreds of dollars. So get the books you need, and then have your own little textbook sell back every term. Sell some online or to your friends about to take that class.
And if you need a reference book on a subject you have in school, you might want to go check out a secondhand store. You’ll be surprised how far $5 will go.
Want more techniques?
During two degrees with little money in college, I learned how to avoid buying textbooks whenever possible. Visit the Beat-Tuition Cheap Textbook Hub for dozens of ideas like these for keeping your textbooks cheap.

Easy ones first: it goes without saying that to receive the Michigan Promise Award you must be a resident of Michigan and be a high school graduate or hold a GED.
Now the details. Make sure you take the Michigan Merit Exam starting in grade 11 in high school. Why your junior year? If you score below a Level 2 in any of the required areas, you can retake the exam during grade 12 and make up the difference. This gives you better odds (by taking the exam on two different occasions) to meet the least test score needed to be eligible for the award. Also, check to make sure that you have not received a merit award under the Merit Award Act. If you have, you are not eligible for consideration for the Michigan Promise Award.
Upon receipt of the scholarship, students have two years to enroll in a postsecondary establishment that is approved by the State of Michigan. Please note, all military academies (USMA, USAFA, USNA, USCGA) are approved organizations even if they are not specifically called out. If you decide to enroll in the Armed Forces or the Peace Corps, you can request an additional two years to enroll in your choice of postsecondary institutions.
Once enrolled, you have four years to finish the requirements for your postsecondary institution. If you’re enrolled in a bachelor’s degree track, you need only finish 50% of the requirements. All other certificate, degree, or vocational programs must be finished within 4 years.
While attending your program of choice you must maintain a minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA. In the event that your program does not grade on a normal scale, evidence of completion is still required and can be worked out with the school and the State of Michigan on a situational basis.
Payment of the award is broken down by timeline as seen below:
Students may receive as much as half of the Michigan Promise Award in two installments of $1000 each in the first two years of postsecondary education. To receive the final payment of $2000, students must fill out the “Michigan Promise Scholarship Application for Final Payment” form and submit it to the MSA Office. This can be done via the internet. All requirements for the scholarship must be completed prior to receiving the final payout (i.e. complete your program, or 50% completion in the event that you are enrolled in a bachelor’s degree program).
Finally, note that the real name of the program is the Michigan Promise Scholarship, not the Michigan Promise Award. The terms are used somewhat interchangeably even though the ‘award’ portion is a carry-over from the Michigan Merit Award. They are in fact one in the same, and there is not a separate scholarship for each.

No doubt about it, applying to college can be quite tedious and boring. You have to get an application, fill it out, send letters of recommendation, write an essay, pay a fee, and finish all this on a deadline. A daunting proposition, when taken all at once.
However, you shouldn’t let these little barriers stop you from filling out that application to the school of your dreams. Let me tell you a story.
The college I wound up attending had a very straightforward and quick application process. When I started at school, I found many students who were attending simply because the application was easy. Their good grades has gotten them excepted quickly, but they had no particular interest in the courses at my school (an engineering school). Some, when asked what they wanted to do, would give such decidedly non-engineering careers such as fashion design!
Most of these people dropped out soon. I can’t help but think that if they had spent a little more time finding the right school for them instead of applying because the application was easy, they might have done a lot better. Rather than allowing the challenges of applying to a school to cause you to look for an easier path, plow ahead through the process.
To help with this plowing process, I’ve created this quick list of tips on eliminating the barriers that stop most people from making the leap and applying for the schools they really want to attend. Read them and learn.
1. Application Fees
To many it may seem odd that a $60 fee would be a hurdle for someone applying to a school that costs thousands, but if you are applying to many colleges, the fees will stack up quickly. The solution to this one is simple, though. Just call up the the admissions office and tell them about your financial situation, and many times they will waive the fee for you. Even if they don’t, it never hurts to try.
3. Letters of Recommendation
There are a few quick fixes here. When you’re out begging for letters, ask if they could make the letter generic enough to change a few words (preferably just the school name) out for different schools, and give them a list of schools you’re applying to so they can make multiple copies. Then, give them pre-addressed and stamped envelopes to send the letters out in. This “batching” technique is much more time efficient that individual letters.
3. The Essay’s
For many, this is the most daunting aspect of the entire application. Let me tell you how to make it easier. Go through each of your applications, and find out what they’re looking for with the essay. You will notice that many of these essays are on similar topics. Once you’ve identified these similarities, you can “modularize” your essays in order to save time. Once you have these topic modules written, you can just copy, paste, and change the sections into the appropriate essay. Just be sure to alter any references to the school name, or else Harvard admissions might be puzzled as to why your only goal in like is to attend Duke!
Hopefully, these tips have help you out a bit with the applications process. Be sure to never give up on your dreams, particularly due to what are actually very small (though largely annoying) obstacles such as college applications. Good luck with the process, and I hope you get into the school of your dreams!

What ever happened to just picking up a book and reading? Mathematics followed the same route, from computing problems in your head to calculating machine*? Now reading has gone digital as well, with speed reading software. Okay it has to be digitalized first so that it can go to print, right? But now the whole process is skipped, to make things easier; now you do not have to go to the book store and buy a book to read however slowly you wish to read it, you can just get whatever you need online.
This means that you can up your reading game by using speed reading software. Perhaps the development of the speed reading software shows the development of our brains. This analysis cannot be avoided since our minds are filled with so much daily stimuatlion and digesting information is crucial so as to not get carried way with consumer desires.
It is not that you can read, it is how fast they want you to read. In todays society everything is so rushed that you do not have time to do anything you really want , no matter how much you want to do it.
You are too busy making money, or at least trying to, that it does not make sense to take time to sit quietly perusing through one of your favourite authors. The show must go on! Today everything is done on a faster scale, the only thing that is actually happening is that you are not taking enough time to actually enjoy the slower things in life.
Do You Really Need Speed Reading Software?
Sometimes you just don’t feel like reading through pages and pages of tutorials, because there is just no time right? So you end up using speed reading software tutorials, taking in only what you think you need to get started.
You need to get wherever it is you are going quickly in terms of fufilling duties that come with script jobs that require you to juice your brain with speed reading software.
However they do make it sound like it is the best thing since wireless connection or broadband, when in fact speed reading has been around for some 60 years or so, created bynone other than Evelyn Wood. She probably did not think it would be tas big as it is now.
Do your self a favor and check out the world of speed reading and speed reading software in general. You will be amazed at the simplicity involved, it’s not easy, but it is accessible to all.

If you skim through the Internet, you will be able to find virtually thousands of different language learning techniques and methods, some that will prove to do wonders to your progress while others will tend to slow you down. From free language learning courses online, to course books and educational language games, everyone boasts their technique as “the most efficient language learning method”. Well I rounded up a few of these methods that have truly proven to be effective and also explained how they work.
The “Study out loud” method
This method involves uttering out words out loud when studying and focusing as much as possible on conversation, self-talk and verbal rehearsal of words. The Study out loud method has two main advantages. The first one is that you will be able to assimilate what you’ve studied a lot better if you actually say it rather than just say it in your head, since this way you will be using both your auditory and visual memory. Auditory memory is extremely powerful and when it’s combined with visual memory, they’re unstoppable.
The second reason for which the Study out loud method is great is that it will get your mouth used to the language, which will help a great deal with pronunciation. It happens to most of us, if we don’t practice a language for a long time, we can still “think” that language perfectly and pronounce the words perfectly in our heads, but when it’s time for an actual conversation you will need a few days of getting used to. Well this method basically eliminates that buffer time, since you’ll be constantly pronouncing the words, literally getting your mouth “used to” the language.
Fun learning
Studies upon studies have been made on the subject and they all proved the same fact: we learn something a lot easier and more efficiently if we’ve studied it while having fun or at least through a more relaxing method. Fun learning can include anything from using flash cards, playing educational language games in that particular language, watching or listening to media in that language, playing memory games or quizzes and so forth. Take note that fun learning is not as fast as the “normal” learning, but it’s more efficient. The only problem is that the amount of information you are able to assimilate through fun learning methods is usually smaller than the one you can assimilate from normal learning methods.
E-learning
E-learning is a relatively new teaching method that emphasizes on giving the student as much learning room as possible and it focuses on using interactive audio-video components in the learning process rather than the classic course books and lessons. E-learning also bases itself heavily on the student setting his own learning pace instead of being forced a schedule that could make the learning process stressful or annoying.
Because of their efficiency, these methods are gaining more and more popularity amongst websites dealing with language learning and local language courses alike. Actually, you could try searching for one of these sites and if you’re not comfortable with the above mentioned methods, you could try to find other ones that could prove to be more efficient in your particular case. Good luck!

Vocabulary improvement is undoubtedly one of the key elements in any language learning process, regardless if you’re learning French, English, Spanish, Chinese, Japanese or any other language, no matter how “complicated” it is and what its rules are. Actually, obtaining an initial vocabulary base is one of the key elements you need to focus on when learning a foreign language and afterwards, increasing your vocabulary is a constant process you need to go through. There are several means to do so, some of which we will be going through below.
Translated texts
Using translated texts is a great way to improve your vocabulary, especially in the beginning stage of the language learning process, when you can’t deduct words out of the context from a foreign text, simply because you don’t understand it at all. Having a translation of the text however, allows you to form links between the words and their meanings. Obviously, it’s important that these texts are kept simple and clean and that they don’t use words that can have several meanings that would only confuse you.
Mnemonics
Although not necessarily a “new” method, mnemonics have been proven to be very effective in allowing students to memorize new words. The “trick” behind mnemonics is to link words in your native language to words in the new language and form visual images from the two. Oftentimes, these images will be far from common, sometimes they will be bizarre or interesting, which will only make them easier to be remembered. To give you some insight on how to use mnemonics, we’ll take a look at the famous “yellow ice” example used in several free online courses as well as in many course books: the Spanish word for ice is “hielo” which resembles the English word yellow. This automatically forms a visual image of “yellow ice” which will help you remember the connection between the two.
The Dictionary method
The Dictionary method is a continuous effort and unlike some of the other vocabulary improvement methods, it won’t be that fast, but it will definitely be long-term effective. What this method is all about is trying to learn a new word in the language you’re studying on a daily basis. Open up the dictionary at a random page each day, spot a word you don’t know and memorize it and what it means. This doesn’t sound much indeed, but in fact you will be learning several words at once with the help of the dictionary’s explanations. If you manage to form a study rhythm with this method you’ll be on a constant vocabulary improvement streak.
In conclusion, one thing you need to always keep in mind is that a language’s vocabulary is the foundation you will be working on and if this foundation isn’t strong enough, the other parts of the structure won’t be extremely stable as well. Besides the above-mentioned methods, you will be able to find several more on websites dealing with language learning techniques, some of which will prove to be well suited for you, whereas others will prove to be a waste of time. It will be your call to judge which ones you will take upon.

For most people, this question is easily answerable, but there’s always that slightly smaller mass of guys and girls speaking an important international language that wonder why they need to learn another one, when they can easily handle themselves about with the help of their mother tongue. Some of the reasons to learn a foreign language that I’ll utter here might seem a bit too obvious, whereas others could spark an interest, regardless, if they determine you to take up on a foreign language then I’ll be a happy man :).
Moving abroad
Obviously, if you’ve already moved abroad then you will absolutely have to learn the local language if you want to be able to blend in with the society. If you’re expecting to move abroad in the near (or far) future you should take up on language lessons as soon as possible and not wait until the last second.
Career bonus
Learning a foreign language can be such a huge career boost in many occasions that it could prove to be an extremely useful investment of time and money. Conducting business in a foreign country will be eased up if you know the local language and it also shows a higher level of bonding and respect from your side, possibly allowing for a better professional relationship.
Traveling
If you’re reading this, you probably have at least a moderate grasp of the English language and you might be wondering why you need to learn a foreign language while traveling, since, let’s face it, you can get by with just English close to everywhere in the World. Well that’s a wrong assumption to start with actually and it’s also a bit disrespectful to wait for them to speak English on their home soil instead of you trying to learn their language. Whether you’re visiting a foreign country for 2 weeks or 2 months, at least knowing the basics will help a lot.
Cultural reasons
Yes… cultural reasons. You might be interested in a different culture’s history, poetry, music or prose and let’s face it, translations in these cases aren’t the most accurate. Learning the language of the culture you’re interested in is a great way to study it up close and understand the details that would’ve been left out in a translation. Knowing two or more languages will also boost your cultural status amongst you fellow colleagues, co-workers or friends, since a polyglot has always been highly regarded in any era’s society.
Although these are the main reasons that most people are learning a foreign language for, there’s a dozen more that we could specify here. Having a foreign spouse, getting a scholarship in a foreign country or simply learning out of fascination for another language can all be serious reasons for the subject at hand.

If you are a parent of a school going child, you will be bound to be studying along with your child every day. You will have more tension than he/she has when the exams are around the corner and, needless to say, you will know “your” lessons better. Though I consider myself a very straight forward disciplinarian, I could never have the heart of saying no to my son, when he asked me to help him with his studies.
What “Help” Means When It Is In Context With Homework
The meaning of “help” in the dictionary of a child is very different from what you will find in the Webster’s Dictionary. When your child asks for help, if you are wise, you will go and do some overtime in the office. If not, you will find yourself studying the subject so you could write the homework assignment, just like I found myself doing regularly every weekend.
Since my son was exceptionally brilliant in Physics, he took it as a major subject with Math and Chemistry is the minor. He omitted Biology as he found it disgusting. I, just to set the record straight, was an Arts student throughout with a Gold Medal in a Masters of Philosophy degree in English. I was good at writing - but I, of course, had my limitations which became very evident to me one day.
What Is An Air Flow Meter? Do You Know What Air Flow Meters Are Used For?
One Friday morning, my son got me breakfast in bed and then asked me permission to go on a fishing trip with his friends over the weekend. I agreed because I found it so sweet that he had taken the trouble to make me breakfast when he could have asked without going to such lengths to please me. I always gave in and he knew. My mom used to quote a saying, “When someone butters you, get prepared for the bite.” The bite came alright!
Just before leaving a bit too casually, he requested me to write a short assignment on air flow meters for Monday Physics class. I never suspected that I would have to work the whole weekend to fulfill this promise, but that is exactly what I had to do. Being an Arts student, I had no inclination on what the term, ‘air flow meter’ could mean. So, I got his Physics book and tried to educate myself.
After reading the lesson maybe the 20th time, I found that I still did not know what an air flow meter was or what it was used for, let alone write an assignment. Lastly, when I realized that I was beaten (thank God), I called an engineer friend who completed the assignment on air flow meters in just under 45 minutes.
Who says that parenting is a piece of cake?

Online education is becoming a more popular way to get one’s degree today because it is more convenient to earn one’s degree from the comfort of his/her own home and at one’s own pace. The fast-paced lifestyle of today makes it more difficult for working adults, especially those with families, to take time out of their busy schedules and go to traditional classrooms on university campuses in order to obtain or upgrade their degrees.
However, online education is not the same as offline education in terms of how the classes are structured and how the material is taught.
There are many reasons why people fail online education:
1. The person is not used to working in an online classroom setting.
An online classroom is considerably different from a traditional classroom. There are rarely textbooks; most course material is presented online on web-pages, in downloadable reports, and in video and audio lectures.
In addition, you don’t sit in a traditional classroom with other people sitting next to you, behind you, or in front of you. Instead, they are on their computers at home or elsewhere, looking at the same course material you are, so you have no direct contact with them. You usually can “talk” to them via message boards or forums, making posts that anyone in the class can respond to, and vice versa.
In some rare instances, you might talk to them or your professor via the phone, but direct contact is not usually possible, and some students who are trying online education for the first time cannot overcome the lack of interaction and direct dialogue to complete the coursework and pass the course.
2. The person is not used to the rigorous expectations from a professor teaching an online course.
Online education is a new experience for professors as well, as this is a whole new medium for them to teach what they know. Some professors are more willing to embrace this new way of learning than others.
Some professors feel that they have to “make up” for the lack of interaction and direct dialogue that you would get in a traditional classroom setting, so they give you more assignments to complete than they would their traditional students, just to make sure that you are getting the education you should be getting because these professors are not confident or convinced that online education give you the same level of knowledge as traditional education does.
Some students cannot handle the extra workload and demands expected from some online professors, which is another reason why some students can’t complete online coursework.
3. The person is not able to deal with the extra distractions associated with online learning.
When you take an online course, you do so on your computer. Often, this is at home, where other distractions can affect some online students. This includes children and/or pets who are unruly and/or need constant care. Other worries regarding home life can also distract the online student from doing his/her very best, since he/she is still in the same environment even when he/she is “attending class.”
This can prove to be too much for some online students, resulting in them not completing online courses.
4. The person doesn’t have the computer skills necessary to complete the online courses.
For those who are trying to start a brand new career, especially one that is technically challenging, sometimes, the whole experience of working with computer software and programs that you have never used before can prevent students from doing well in their courses.
Not only do they have to try to learn the course material, but they also have to learn how to access the course material, how to ask for help when they need it via the message boards/forums, how to access the tests when they are ready to take them, etc.
For some online students, the experience is so overwhelming that they don’t succeed in completing their courses.
5. The person does not utilize good time management skills in order to keep up with the online coursework.
In order to be successful in the online classroom, you have to have good time management skills. After all, you’re the only one who decides when you “attend class,” when you take the tests (within reason; there is a time limit to complete the course, but you decide what days you take the tests, unlike the traditional classroom,) how much time you spend on the message board or in the forum, etc.
Some online students can’t designate their time between all the tasks required to complete online courses, as well as balance the rest of their lives.
It is suggested that online students stay current on their coursework as much as possible because once you fall behind, it’s very difficult to catch up, especially if you are not comfortable in an online classroom setting in the first place. Most experts suggest logging in at least once a day at least six days a week to give you the best chance of staying current on your coursework and giving you the best chance of completing your online courses.
By being aware of the reasons above, you can better prepare yourself to handle these challenges and give you a better chance of completing those online courses and your degree.

Many busy adults take online courses to make it more convenient for them to upgrade their degrees or earn degrees in new fields. However, to take advantage of this, one must be confident enough in his/her computer skills in order to be able to complete the online courses and earn one’s degree online.
For some, especially those who work on computers in their current occupations, that likely isn’t a problem, as they will likely already have experience with programs they will use in their online courses. On the other hand, those who don’t use computers much or at all in their current occupations, may have a steeper learning curve in regards to working with the software that is necessary to successfully pass online courses.
People wishing to pursue a degree via online education should be familiar with word processing software like Microsoft Word, spreadsheet software like Microsoft Excel, and presentation software like Microsoft PowerPoint, since it is possible you will have to create documents, spreadsheets, and/or presentations that you will need to send to your professor via email or have to upload to a site from which your professor will download it.
Therefore, you should also be familiar with your email software program, like Microsoft Outlook or a web-based email provider like Hotmail, Yahoo, and/or GMail, as well as knowing how to upload and download files, since you’re not going to be able to write your answers on notebook paper or print out pages from your printer in order to give to your professor, nor will he/she give you papers with your assignments on them since you likely will not meet him/her in person during the course. So knowing how to email and upload/download files will be essential for you to complete online courses.
Often, your professor will provide video and/or audio lectures for you as part of your course material. As a result, you should be familiar with whatever software is required to access these lectures, whether it would be RealPlayer, Quicktime, Windows Media Player, or the University’s own software program. Familiarize yourself with the controls so you can playback the lectures easily and can concentrate on the information given in the lectures, not on how to work the software.
It is certainly possible that your course material will require you to conduct some searches for additional information, so you should be familiar with the Google search engine at least, if not others like Yahoo, AskJeeves, MSN, etc. Know how to search for information on various topics by knowing what keywords, or words that signify what topic you are looking for, to input into the box.
At times, computers and software programs won’t function like they are supposed to, resulting in error messages and complications. The more experience you have with computers, the more likely you’ll be able to solve these problems on your own. However, should you get stuck, contact your professor and/or classmates and see if they can assist you. Let them know right away that you are having trouble and can’t solve it so that you don’t fall behind in your classes, because once you fall behind on the material, it is very difficult to catch up, especially if you are uncomfortable using computers to begin with.
Many people nowadays look toward online courses to help them obtain their degrees faster, but one must be prepared to work with the software that is required to complete these online courses in order for them to receive that added benefit of gaining their degrees faster.

When pursuing an online degree, you likely want to complete it as quickly as possible, being that you have other demands and responsibilities in your life, including providing an income for yourself at least, if not also for your family.
One way to speed up the process of earning your online degree is by taking equivalency tests. These tests allow you to complete your online degree efficiently and affordably. They will require some studying, but many colleges will grant credit and/or advanced standing for successful completion of equivalency exams.
The three most common equivalency tests are the following tests:
1. The College-Level Examination Program (CLEP) - This test provides students of any age with the opportunity to demonstrate college-level achievement through a program of exams in undergraduate college courses.
You can gain college credit for what you already know via independent study, noncredit adult courses, and/or professional development.
You can save considerable money as the CLEP costs just $60, much less than hundreds or thousands for an online course.
If you’re just a few credits short of earning that degree, CLEPs could make all the difference in obtaining that degree.
CLEPs are available in 34 college-level introductory subjects.
Over 2,900 colleges grant undergraduate credit for CLEP, between 3-12 college credits for each CLEP exam taken.
Over 1,300 colleges administer the exam.
The test is administered on computer and is available all year-long. They are timed and 90 minutes long. With the exception of the English Composition with Essay section, all the rest of the exam is composed of multiple-choice questions, though the mathematics section can also have some fill-in-the-blank type questions.
All CLEP exams are scored on a scale of 20 to 80; you need to score 50+ (equivalent to a C grade) in order to earn the credit.
2. The DANTES Subject Standardized Tests (DSST) - These tests enable people to use their knowledge acquired outside the classroom to accomplish their educational and professional goals.
The current cost of these tests is $70 each and subject tests include such diverse subjects from business and math to health and social sciences to the humanities.
These tests are currently accepted or administered at over 1,900 colleges and universities nationwide and are approved by the American Council on Education (ACE.)
3. Excelsior College Examinations - These exams allow you to complete your degree efficiently and affordably, earn the credit you need for promotion or certification, and demonstrate what you know for college admission or placement. They are accepted by Excelsior College and other universities around the nation.
Subject Tests include subjects in the arts and sciences, business, education, and nursing. Overall, there are 40 different subject tests to choose from. Many of these tests offer upper-level credit to those who score well enough on them. To take these tests, you need to go to your nearby Pearson Professional Centers, which are open up to six days a week. The tests are multiple-choice.
Some universities will also have their own type of equivalent tests, specifically for those students who have been out of school for a while, to better determine what level a person is at in regards to placement in college courses.
Occasionally, some universities will require you to take the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) if you never have before. This test consists of a Reasoning Test that has three main components: a Critical Reading section, a Mathematics section, and a Writing section.
There are also SAT Subject Tests, which fall into five general subject categories: English, History & Social Studies, Mathematics, Science, and Foreign Languages. These are not always required by colleges, but can give them a better idea of how advanced you are in your education and where you should be placed in regards to your courses.
For those applying to graduate school, the Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) are usually prerequisites as the university will use these in part to help determine your qualifications for graduate study.
There are two types of GRE: A general reasoning test and subject tests.
The GRE General Test measures verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, critical thinking, and analytical writing skills that have been acquired over a long period of time and that are not related to any specific field of study. This test is being administered on computers in most areas of the world, whereas a few places still use a paper-based version of the test. It is administered year-round.
The GRE Subject Tests gauge undergraduate achievement in these eight disciplines:
Biochemistry, Cell, and Molecular Biology Chemistry Computer Science Literature in English Mathematics Physics Psychology
These are intended for students who have majored in or have extensive background in that specific area. They are administered in November, December, and April at paper-based test centres worldwide.
Knowing what tests you either need to take or should take should help you enter the online degree program you want and even reduce the amount of time it takes for you to earn that degree.

When you choose a college major, you obviously want to choose a major that will not only utilize your passions, interests, and skills, but also one that will give you a great chance to earn a good-earning income. After all, even if you choose a major that you are interested in and have aptitude in, it won’t do you much good if the job market dries up for that particular field.
Looking at major trends that are developing in our economy, the following five trends will greatly influence what jobs will be the most-in-demand for the next ten years.
1. Aging Baby Boomers.
2. Better Medicine.
3. Increased Costs of Child Care.
4. Rapid Technology Growth.
5. Distributed Work.
Five of the projected most in-demand occupations for the next ten years are the following -
1. Computer Programmer - Even though many American companies are hiring overseas workers for programming jobs, there is still plenty of work for qualified computer specialists as well. Increased security risks and recent security breaches have led to American companies paying more for in-house teams of programmers that can be monitored more closely.
Plus, nowadays, companies will want their programmers to develop software programs that specifically work and are unique to their companies to help streamline their operations and make them more efficient and profitable.
This is why computer programming degrees and courses in programming and security will become very popular in the near future.
2. Day Care Provider - Due to the fact that both parents now usually have to work in this day and age in order to sustain a moderate to high level of living, the demand for quality child care is on the rise, and this is why parents are willing to pay higher premiums to facilities with excellent reputations and strong learning programs.
Child Psychology courses and day care management diplomas should be on the rise due to the recent trend in wanting quality day care providers.
3. Elder Care Specialist - Baby Boomers can’t rely on larger families to help take care of them like their parents could, so they are turning to professionally operated assisted living facilities. Some of these facilities come equipped with luxury amenities like golf courses and four-star dining.
Due to the recent cases of elderly neglect at some facilities, the government and society are watching elder care facilities much more closely, which is all the more reason why these facilities are demanding job candidates with proven skills and uplifting attitudes.
Medical Assisting courses, Life Care Planning certificates, and Gerontology degrees should be useful in pursuing this career.
4. Employment Specialist - Due to the demands of child care and elderly care, more American businesses have turned to employment agencies to arrange short-term or flexible employment relationships. Companies that also need to be flexible in terms of how many employees they have due to seasonal customer demand also utilize professional agencies to have the right number of employees at all times of the year.
The U.S. Department of Labour and private studies conclude that this field will be in great demand over the next decade because of the factors listed above. For those who have strong interpersonal skills and a wide degree of interests, this occupation would fit them perfectly. Being that he/she usually will get paid a commission on the income of placed workers, it can be a lucrative paying field as well.
Taking Human Resource training courses and earning a Human Resources Management degree are key to entering this growing field.
5. Environmental Engineer - This field will be in demand because of the growing communities in Nevada, Arizona, Colorado, and Florida, as well as the crumbling infrastructure of America’s more established cities and towns.
Environmental engineers oversee new construction and renovation, which help to preserve natural resources and keep residents safe. Many environmental engineers work for developers and corporations that want to take a proactive approach to their business, in an effort to build strong relationships with their customers and to comply with the law.
Environmental Engineering degrees and courses that deal with conservation and the environment are critical to entering this field.
By knowing what careers will be in-demand over the next 10 years, you can see which career best fits your interests and make plans to study for a degree related to that career so you can give yourself a better chance of obtaining a well-earning, sustaining position when you graduate.

In today’s world, the number of graduates who are earning online degrees is skyrocketing. However, there are many concerns related to online degrees.
One main concern is whether the online university is actually certified, authorized, and/or accredited to award degrees to students. Some schools do not meet these requirements. There are also several levels of fraud found in some educational programs and “schools.” These can range from using the student’s work history as the “learning” period that earned the degree to simply selling diplomas. Degrees-R-Us is one such example, promising bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degrees in about 10 days, and are willing to show one graduated with honors for a higher “tuition fee.”
Some states like Oregon, Iowa, and South Dakota are starting to crack down on these types of schools within their borders.
To protect yourself, you should check to see what kind of accreditation the school you are considering enrolling in has, or claims to have. Being “licensed by the state” isn’t an accreditation and may not mean anything at all. Some violators claim to be accredited by agencies that either don’t exist, have been created by the school itself, or are legitimate agencies, but have no record of accreditation for the school. Those who have earned degrees from these unaccredited schools are really out-of-luck when it comes to their hard-earned dollars and time because potential employers likely will reject these job applicants and the credits earned from these unaccredited schools cannot be transferred to other universities. In essence, those students have to start all over once again.
Therefore, you should contact the appropriate State Department of Higher Education to see if these schools are accredited or not. If you want to remain on the safe side, take online courses only from schools that have an offline campus presence, as that school’s reputation will be at stake, so the quality of the online program should match the offline program. However, there are strictly online campuses that are accredited and provide a quality education as well, like the University of Phoenix.
Another main concern with online degrees is what type of accreditation is best. The two main types of accreditation are regional accreditation and national accreditation.
While transfer credits from schools that are regionally accredited are generally accepted at both regionally and nationally accredited universities, the same is NOT true for transfer credits that are earned at nationally accredited universities - regionally accredited universities will normally not accept them, meaning you have to earn those course credits again if you decide to continue your pursuit of a bachelor’s degree at a later date at a regionally accredited school after starting your bachelor’s degree at a national accredited school.
Also, while some employers don’t understand the difference between the two types of accreditation, some employers prefer prospective applicants to have earned a degree from a locally recognized university, rather than one in another part of the country. Therefore, if you plan on working in a certain part of the country, it may be advantageous to check out those universities near that area and enrol for their online courses as this could give you an edge in future job interviews.
Being aware of the problems with online degrees will enable you to take steps to avoid and/or minimize these problems so that your online degree will help you gain that good-earning position you’ve worked so hard to achieve.

One element that both online education and traditional education share is test-taking. You still have to pass tests, whether it be in a classroom or on your computer, in order for you to pass the course and be that much closer to earning your degree.
Here are 5 tips on how to study for tests so you can improve your performance on them:
1. Review the material right after class.
After you are finishing reading the material online, turn away from your computer and write out some of the ideas you’ve learned on a piece of paper - this way, you will refocus your mind on what you have learned, plus you will find out what parts of the material did not stay with you that you will need to refocus on.
2. Space out your studying; don’t wait until the night before the test to do all your studying.
Just like in traditional studying, it is better whenever possible to space out your studying - trying to cram for a test the night before can lead to more anxiety and stress than is necessary.
Instead, review your class materials a few times a week, focusing on one topic at a time. If possible, try to print out some of the materials so you can study away from your computer. If this isn’t possible, it would be wise for you to set some extra time aside to be at your computer without “attending class”; even a half-hour every day or two would greatly reduce the amount of studying you would have to do the night before the exam.
3. Start out by studying the most important information.
Also like traditional studying, you want to focus on the most important information first, especially what your professor stressed in your class sessions, because that information will likely be on the exam, and chances are, make up a large portion of the exam. Likewise, you should spend a considerable amount of time studying that material.
4. Learn the general concepts first before focusing on the details.
To understand the details about a topic, you have to understand the main concepts of a topic first; otherwise, you have little chance of understanding the details about that topic. Focus on the main ideas first before working on the sub-ideas related to those main ideas.
5. Take notes and write down a summary of the important ideas as you read through your study material.
Good note taking would include such useful information like the definitions of new vocabulary words, new concepts discussed in a chapter, and any new procedures that are explained in your reading of the material. In addition, writing out the questions you have about the material would also be a good idea so you can ask your professor and classmates about them in “class” - this can lead to further discussion about the material and better understanding of it.
In addition to better learning of the material, good note taking will also provide you with a note sheet away from your computer so that you can study the material even when you are away from your computer.
Utilizing these five tips should help you to perform better on your exams, and eventually, earn that degree!

When choosing to return to school after a long time away from being in a classroom setting, you want to only spend as much time in the classroom as is necessary to further your degree or earn a new one.
That is why the CLEP Exam is so important for non-traditional students: These exams give you the chance to demonstrate your knowledge and earn college credit without entering a classroom. In essence, they can already give you some of the credit hours you need to earn that degree, eliminating some of the courses you would need to take to earn that degree, thereby cutting down on the time you need to be in the classroom to earn that degree.
This is extremely beneficial for non-traditional students, who usually hold full-time occupations and may even have families, including children, they are responsible for. Time is especially of the essence for them, as they need to earn those advanced degrees as quickly as possible so they can provide a better life for their families that much quicker.
It’s also nice to know that some of your work experience can count as college credit toward that advanced degree. 2,900 colleges grant credit and/or advanced standing for CLEP exams.
These exams can reward you for knowledge you have learned from independent study, non-credit adult courses, professional development, or life experience.
And these exams can save you money because the test costs $60, which is much cheaper than spending a few hundred to a few thousand for online courses you don’t have to take.
Not all colleges accept CLEP exams for credit, so double-check with your university before registering. Also, the credit given by those colleges that accept them for credit and the minimum qualifying score to attain that credit vary, so double-check before registering to know what you have to score on them and how many credits you will earn and still have to earn before earning your degree.
There is a three-step process to registering for an exam:
1. Select and contact a CLEP Test Centre near you - these are usually at college campuses throughout the United States and around the world. Contact the centre and find out about its registration procedure, service fee, testing schedule, and parking/transportation information.
2. Complete a Registration-Admission Form and mail it with your payment to the test centre. The payment includes the $60 test fee, as well as a non-refundable administration fee, which can vary depending upon the university - check with them on the specific cost.
3a. Request special accommodations if you have a learning or physical disability that would prevent you from taking an exam under standard conditions.
3b. Request special administration if you require a paper-and- pencil exam, as these exams are now administered on computers. Note that the cost of a paper-and-pencil CLEP exam is $120 and that you will not receive your results for two to three weeks after the testing date (you normally receive them immediately after completing the computer exam.)

There are many technological tools on the market today geared towards parents who wish to help educate and entertain their children. Computers have become a big part of that technology, from the more simplistic portable computerized toys to actual computer applications designed to help children acquire useful skills while promoting fun. Interactive books are among those applications.
The concept of the interactive book is simple; to help provide children with the fun stories they have come to love, while allowing them to interact with the characters in a way that makes the experience more real and more fun. While most interactive books are available online, there are also other mediums for such reading material.
The interactive book began with simple talking books. These books allowed children to read while listening to a recorded version of the story. The recording came complete with sound effects and character voices which enhanced the actual reading experience. It also helped those children who did not know how to read or had difficultly reading to enjoy the story.
Now, the interactive books that are available via the Internet take this idea one step further. By using a mouse, your child is now able to actually take part in the story and interact with the characters. Computer images make the story come alive, while the written words are displayed on the screen. Character voices are also heard. All of these features help give the story an added dimension, and help walk the child through the various experiences of each character. Interactive books also provide your child the opportunity to learn more about the computer, and can help prepare him or her for the use of the everyday technology that is becoming more and more familiar all the time.
There are many sites that offer interactive books, so finding one to suit your child should not be difficult. You can also find various resources on the Internet that will lead you to other similar sites and materials, all of which are designed with children in mind. You will also be able to choose books that match your child’s skill level, and compliment his or her interests. The options are numerous, and choosing books online can be even more fun than the traditional method of checking them out from a library. This is not, however, meant to discourage traditional library use, but is meant as another avenue by which to instill in your children a love of reading that will serve them all their lives.

If you are searching for the right educational toys for your preschooler, you may be overwhelmed with all the options available. Toy manufacturers are now busier than ever, working hard to keep up with the latest trends and styles, and competing to make their toys the best and most popular among small children. Though the decision of what to buy your child can be difficult, here are several suggestions that may help you.
When choosing an educational toy, you want to be sure it will serve its educational purpose. You want your child to learn something while playing with a particular toy, and for that to remain a popular one with your preschooler for a reasonable amount of time. This is why you should choose carefully.
When selecting educational toys, it is also important to keep your child’s interests in mind. Remember, it isn’t the educational factor that will interest your child, rather the fun the toy will bring. Encourage your child to play with different toys and learn new things, but always try to give preference to the more educational preschool-level toys, whether they teach basic math or reading skills, color recognition, or just stimulate different parts of a child’s developing brain. After all, these simple, educational games can often be the most entertaining.
Chalkboards are among the most popular toys for preschoolers. They are also among the oldest. And since many modern chalkboards are double-sided– with a chalkboard on one side and a magnetic board for plastic letters on the other, this toy can also serve a dual purpose. By playing with it, your child will be able to learn the letters of the alphabet with the magnetic letters, and then be able to practice those letters on the chalkboard once this is accomplished. It also allows for free-hand drawing and hours of creative fun.
Toy pianos are also among the most popular and most beneficial toys. As shown in recent studies, children who learn music, even on the most basic level, tend to perform better in math and science-oriented subjects, and also tend to score higher on scholastic exams. Aside from that, this kind of toy is a great way for your child to be creative while making his or her very own music.
Blocks have long been among the most basic, yet most fun toys a child can own. There are many types from which to choose, from blocks that interlock, to those that simply balance on one another. Your child will have hours of fun building towers, houses, or just simply learning to stack and count.
No matter which educational toys you choose, be sure they are age-appropriate for your child. Check to be sure they don’t have loose parts that could be harmful to your child, and that they aren’t too complicated for his or her age and education level. You do not want your child to become discouraged by playing with a toy he or she does not understand. Also, play with your children. If you show an interest in the toys you buy, they are more likely to do the same.

In recent years, computers have become an integral part of everyday life. Now, more people own computers than ever before, and the numbers continue to rise. As a result, children are learning how to use computers in school at a much earlier age than ever before.
There is a wide array of educational software available for children of all ages. This provides you, the parent, with many options when choosing educational software for your children. Since many educational games have been shown to help children learn and improve their skills in many subjects, these games have become an important part of a child’s learning experience. But choosing the right educational software makes all the difference. For this reason, it is essential to take care when choosing computer software for your children.
The best educational software is designed by people who know how children think. By nature, children like to see, touch, and interact with a thing in order to learn about it. This same concept also applies to computer software. For this reason, interactive applications have become so prevalent. Among these, there are many different types of software applications. Some are actual simulations, while others are open-ended creativity tools. There are also a number of structured activities available for the computer such as puzzles, tutorials, and reference titles. They are made by the 700+ publishers that specialize in educational items.
Because there are so many options available to you, selecting those that will truly help your child to learn may seem like an overwhelming task. This, however, does not have to be the case. When choosing computer software for your child, there are a few factors you should consider.
First, make sure you choose software that your child will be able to operate. This is especially important if you have a small child, as he or she will probably only be able to use the mouse. Be sure the application you choose accommodates this, as your child’s attention span will probably not last very long, otherwise.
When choosing software, you should also take care to select programs and games that best fit the interests of your child. While it is wonderful to encourage the learning of new skills and acceptance of new ideas, your child is less likely to take part in something of which he or she has little or no interest. Introducing your child to newer concepts and skills more gradually, however, may peak their interest and help build character and skill.

Today, videos have become a very popular means of entertainment among children of all ages. It isn’t uncommon for children to spend much of their free time watching their favorite movies or television shows. The invention of the portable DVD player has enhanced the already great role video entertainment can play in a child’s day, as it allows parents to take DVD videos wherever children go. This however, creates considerable concern about what today’s youngsters are watching. Some DVD and television entertainment is valuable to a child’s education, as well as entertaining. Others are not. For this reason, parents should choose their children’s videos with great care.
The first factor in choosing the right educational videos for children is to choose educational movies and shows that will match their interests. If you fail to keep a child’s interests in mind, the child will be less likely to watch the videos you choose, and may easily become bored and restless. However, if your child is interested in the chosen topic, he or she is much more likely to absorb the contents and remember them later. This way, educational videos will have a more positive and lasting effect on your child.
By choosing the right kinds of videos, you will be able to prevent your children from watching programs you, as the parent, deem undesirable or inappropriate. If you choose videos for your children, you will be able to better monitor the content and quality of each video. You will also be more in touch with what your child is learning, and by familiarizing yourself with the content, be able to discuss the videos with your children. This will also let them know that you are taking an interest in what they are watching and learning.
There are many different titles out there from which to choose, and you want to be sure that the ones you purchase are videos that your children will want to watch. You don’t want to invest in educational videos, just to have them sit on the shelf. Before choosing titles, start by getting feedback from your children. Show them the videos you are considering, and find out which videos and topics spark their interest.
When choosing educational videos for your children, it’s also important to keep their ages in mind. Purchasing highly educational videos for older children, for example, is often not the best use of time or money. Often, it will result in a lack of attention, leading to a library of videos that your children never watch.
Lastly, watch any videos that you purchase with your children. These videos are meant to be a learning tool, designed to help children have fun while they learn. Videos are not, however, designed to be babysitters. The more interest you take in the lives of your children, the more you will be able to monitor what they watch, and improve their education.

Video games are among the most popular toys today. Children of all ages spend a lot of time engrossed in the latest action-packed video console or computer game. For this reason, it is important to choose video games that are educational, rather than those that contain violence or other content not suitable for children. There is a host of video games on the market perfect for children. These games incorporate education into the fun of video games, giving both parents and children lots of safe, educational options to choose from.
Though there have been serious concerns over the past few years surrounding the adverse affects of frequent video game playing on children, playing video games can have some positive effects as well. First, games can provide children a fun and social form of entertainment, especially when played in pairs or even teams. This allows children who share similar interests the opportunity to learn from each other while having fun in a pressure-free environment. This also helps to encourage teamwork and cooperation, two attributes that are essential to a child’s social education.
Video games can also make children feel more comfortable with technology. This may not be as much of an issue as it used to be, as many children are now learning basic computer skills at a young age, but it is still an important factor since technology changes so frequently. It also gives them the opportunity to share their knowledge with other children, and to learn from their experiences in a particular game or format.
Playing educational video games can also help build a child’s self-esteem as he or she masters more and more different levels in a particular game. More importantly, it can also teach children to feel good about having fun in a non-competitive environment.
However, the main goal of educational video games is, of course, to help educate. Educational video games can improve the development of math, reading, and problem-solving skills. This kind of practice –practice that your children will want to take part in– can help them with their schoolwork, as well as help them to catch onto particular subjects more quickly.
Video games can also help the improvement and development of eye-hand coordination, as well as fine motor skills. This will be very important to any child’s future, and can be instrumental in developing a child’s interests and special skills. This is also a good way to encourage your child to use different parts of his or her brain.
No matter which educational video games you choose, be sure they do not contain any features that would not be suitable for your children. Since the objective is to learn, they should help build useful skills and be thought-provoking. These games will also provide your child with hours of fun, while helping to build some of the most essential basic skills.

The following paragraphs summarize the work of degree experts who are completely familiar with all the aspects of degree. Heed their advice to avoid any degree surprises.
Engineering Basics: By definition, Engineers apply the theories and principles of science and mathematics to the economical solution of practical technical problems. The work of an engineer deals with the relationship of scientific discovery and its application to the world around us. Engineers design and develop and improve many things we use.
In addition to design and development, many engineers work in testing, manufacturing or repairs. They supervise production in factories, determine the causes of breakdowns, and test manufactured products to maintain quality. People who work in engineering do all kinds of jobs.
Some people work in design, which is generally done on computers, and others actually make things in a more hands on environment. Another job segment to the engineering field is the people who make business decisions and deals or who do research ingenious new ways of designing and building things.
Devry University offers bachelor engineering degrees online in the areas of biomedical, computer software, mechanical engineering and more!
People who work in engineering do all kinds of jobs. The majority of engineers concentrate in a specific area such as structural and transportation engineering, which is part of civil engineering and materials engineering.
Engineers also may specialize in one industry, such as aerospace, computer, or medical. The following are more in-depth explanations of various engineering disciplines:
Mechanical engineering is one of the broadest of all disciplines. Mechanical engineers research, develop, design, manufacture, and test tools, engines, machines, and other mechanical devices.
They work on power-producing machines such as electric generators, internal combustion engines, and steam and gas turbines, as well as power-using machines such as refrigeration and air-conditioning equipment, machine tools, material handling systems, elevators and escalators, industrial production equipment, and robots used in manufacturing.
If a machine has moving parts that work together to produce power - it’s likely that a mechanical engineer designed it. They also design tools used by engineers in other specialties and work in emerging fields like nanotechnology.
Mechanical engineers may work in production operations in manufacturing or agriculture, maintenance, or technical sales; many are administrators or managers.
It has been said that mechanical engineering is where the power is.
Civil engineers work in the public interest on projects that impact public health and safety. Some specialize in environmental engineering, focusing on protecting the water supply, or finding safer ways to process human and chemical waste.
Others specialize in construction, or in designing roads, bridges, airports and urban transit systems. Civil engineers design and supervise the construction of roads, buildings, airports, tunnels, dams, bridges, and water supply and sewage systems.
Theses engineers have to take in to account many factors in their design process. They are responsible for calculating construction costs, expected lifetime of a project, government regulations and potential environmental hazards to their projects such as earthquakes.
Civil engineering is one of the oldest engineering disciplines and includes many specialties. The chief specialties are structural, water resources, construction, environmental, transportation, and geotechnical engineering.
Many civil engineers hold supervisory or administrative positions, from supervisor of a construction site to city engineer.
Biomedical engineers develop mechanisms and procedures that solve medical and health-related problems by using knowledge of biology and medicine with engineering principles and practices.
Many do research, along with life scientists, chemists, and medical scientists, to develop and evaluate systems and products such as artificial organs, prostheses, pharmaceuticals and medical information systems.
Most engineers in this specialty need a sound background in another engineering specialty, such as mechanical or electronics engineering, in addition to specialized biomedical training.
Some specialties within biomedical engineering include biomaterials, biomechanics, medical imaging, rehabilitation engineering, and orthopedic engineering.
The more authentic information about degree you know, the more likely people are to consider you a degree expert. Read on for even more degree facts that you can share.
Work Environment
Engineering professionals work in various settings such as office buildings, laboratories, or industrial plants. Some may also work outdoors at construction sites and oil and gas exploration sites. Some engineers travel extensively to plants or worksites. Engineers work a standard 40-hour week, but longer hours can be expected to meet deadlines.
Education Requirements
A bachelors degree is the minimum requirement for entry-level engineering jobs.
Most engineering degrees are granted in electrical, electronics, mechanical, or civil engineering. Many programs also include courses in general engineering. A design course, sometimes accompanied by a computer or laboratory class or both, is part of the curriculum of most programs.

Before you join the military, ask yourself if you are willing to give your life for your Soldiers (or Marines) and your country. If you can say yes to that question, then you are ready to join. Many do not consider that question, and then are surprised at the risks they are required to take in time of war. Although, the conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq will change and eventually end, enemies of individual freedom continue to exist all over the world. These fanatics will continue to attack the United States and her democratic allies, until we change the dynamic of world-wide poverty and provide opportunity for all.
Now, if you decide you still want to join the military, and you want to be an officer, I recommend you join a reserve officer training program. You can join anytime during your college education. During one of your summers, you will be required to take a college version of basic training for either Army or Navy ROTC. This will give you the initial training and understanding of the responsibilities of wearing the uniform, as well as some of its rewards.
I am not a Marine officer, so I cannot tell you what it is like from a personal perspective. However, my friends that are Marine officers are very proud of their service, and expect high standards of behavior from themselves and their Marines.
If you choose to be a Marine, you will need to take Navy ROTC, and apply for entry into the Marine Corps. After you graduate and are commissioned as a Marine second lieutenant, you will take Marine basic infantry training. All Marines must take basic infantry training before they are qualified to take any other Marine specialty training. You will not be given your desired specialty until you prove yourself in your initial training.
You can also join the Marines out of college, but the path will be more difficult. You will have to go through enlisted basic infantry training. If you prove yourself worthy there you can earn the chance to go to Marine Officer Candidate School. Here you earn the right to become a Marine second lieutenant. You would already be at this point when you graduate, if you complete a 2 or more year ROTC program.
Unfortunately, you cannot not join the military for a few months. If you are commissioned, your commitment is usually at least 3 years duty. If you accept a scholarship, or a monetary entry bonus of some type, your commitment is usually 8 years, mixed between active duty time and reserve time. The nice thing about trying ROTC is that if you really dislike it, you can turn in your uniforms and stop attending. You would have no binding commitment, unless you accept a scholarship of some kind.
Please talk to the ROTC program at your college or at the university closest to you to get more questions answered. There should be an OTC program close to you, even if your college does not have one. You should be able to join as a member for a satellite campus.

A current main concern about online degrees is whether an online degree from an accredited college or university is seen by potential employers as a lesser degree than one that is earned in the traditional classroom.
Certain professions, such as entry-level MBAs, still consider online graduates as second-tier to traditional classroom graduates because the ones doing the hiring all obtained their degrees from traditional schools and have questions and concerns about the quality of online degrees.
Graduates from the first Internet law school, Concord Law School, will likely have fewer options to practice law because the American Bar Association will not accredit the university. As a result, those graduates will only be able to practice law in those states that don’t require lawyers to earn degrees from an ABA-approved law school.
There are some professions, like information technology fields, that tend to value online degrees more highly because of the nature of the work itself.
However, a career network website, did a survey of 239 human resources professionals and found that they tend to put more value on degrees from established universities like Duke or Stanford than from virtual universities like the University of Phoenix.
Their study also revealed that 26% believed that online bachelor’s degrees were as credible as traditionally earned bachelor’s degrees, while 37% believed that online graduate degrees were as credible as traditionally earned graduate degrees. The reason behind this is believed to be that people seeking graduate degrees are doing it online because it’s their best or only option due to current job demands. These people may be seen as more driven and self-motivated.
The biggest drawbacks regarding online education cited by those surveyed were the lack of social interaction with peers (61%,) lack of data about the effectiveness or quality of the education (53%,) and loss of real-time teacher/student exchange (39%.)
The industries most likely to embrace online degrees were the following -
Internet/New Media (70%) Technology (46%) High Tech (44%) Media & Marketing (29%)
Telecommunications (29%) Consulting (22%)
The industries least likely to embrace online degrees were the following -
Medicine (68%) Law (56%) Health Care/Bio Tech (52%) Academia (44%) Government (22%) Finance (18%)
The following was recommended by respondents to help online degree holders land a position even when the interviewer has doubts about the value of the degree:
- Tell employers and potential employers that your degree was earned online. - Bring along transcripts, course study examples, and letters of recommendation or authenticity about the program and its accreditation. - Have industry experience to back the degree. - For those with limited work history, having taken courses like public speaking, debate, public forum, and group dynamics could help show that you have people skills, which could help ease the hesitation over the lack of social interaction with your peers when taking online courses.
As more and more online degree holders get interviewed and hired, the number of companies that will be more open to hiring people with online degrees will increase.
Slowly, but surely, the employment world is realizing that talented individuals don’t have to come from the traditional classroom to provide value to a company. Companies are also realizing that individuals who would have never been available before due to work commitments, family obligations, and time constraints preventing them from attending traditional classroom degree programs, are now becoming options for these businesses to consider adding to their employee talent pool.

If you have always wanted to pursue a career in the food industry, look into enrolling in a culinary cooking school. This will provide the training needed to explore your passion for food and food preparation. The culinary arts are a broad and diverse field, and there is always room in the restaurant industry for new employees and entrepreneurs.
Remember, though, that while a career in the culinary field can be very rewarding, several aspects of it will test your resolve. Becoming a master chef takes more work than you might expect. The culinary field is not for the weak of heart. Only those who believe in their ability and who are confident that they have what it takes to become a master chef will succeed. If you are willing to work hard, the finest reward of the discovery that your culinary creations meet with high levels of approval awaits.
Once you know that a career in the food industry is right for you, there are several ways to prepare yourself. Do not take lightly your decision to attend a culinary cooking school. In other words, it necessary you do the required research before deciding which school you will attend. The main reason to undergo this research is that there are a number of underlying factors to consider. For example, you may or may not know that there are specialty food careers that focus solely on regional cooking. In addition, there are specific styles of cooking offered by certain schools.
Ask yourself what it is exactly that you want to learn. Perhaps you have already been working in a kitchen for a number of years. If this is true, clear your mind of what you have already learned. Old habits are tough to break, but be willing to break them to get the most out of your experience at a culinary cooking school. On the other hand, if you are very new to the food industry, think about what is most important to you.
Discovering your specific area of expertise will go a long way towards making your education as beneficial as it can be. Many are interested in a well-rounded education, one that blends kitchen training with front-of-house training. Maybe you are looking for a purely kitchen-oriented training. You may even want specific training, perhaps in pastry or baking. Make your decision. This will then narrow your educational options. If you are not sure which area of the food industry you want to be involved in, most recommend the broader option. That way you can specialize once you have had a taste of what is available.
Try to enroll in a good culinary cooking school, one that features a number of experienced educators. After all, if you are going to spend the time and money on your education, you might as well do it right. Be encouraged to know that the culinary field is one of the fastest growing modern industries and because of this, you are usually guaranteed a job after finishing your education.
Locating a cooking school that meets all of your needs is one way to begin your career as a master chef. If you remember that not every culinary cooking school is the same, you will be able to search for the ones that will most benefit you.

Food and nutrition is something that every person needs. With such a worldwide market, it is no wonder that culinary education is becoming such a booming industry. Whether you are just looking to become a cook, or a world-renowned chef, you are in need of the proper training.
There are some natural kitchen artists that can just toss in a few ingredients and create a masterpiece. However, most of the great chefs of the world had to start from the bottom and work their way up. It is also simple to assume that most of them have received a proper culinary education.
Cooking can be a very complex industry. It is not simply a matter of throwing a few things together and pitching the dish in the oven. It takes careful planning, consideration and understanding in order to make the perfect meal. And with the proper education, there will be many perfect meals under your belt within a very short period of time.
Since there are so many different types of cuisine styles, culinary school can be broken down into many smaller categories. If baking has always been your passion, you may excel at taking a course in pastry baking and confectionary arts. This type of course will take your muffin and cupcake experience and bring it to a level you never dreamed possible.
This is a course that many culinary students choose to take because it offers a wide variety of baking options that can cater to a wide variety of situations. Whether you wish to make donuts and pastries for a living, or be a dessert caterer, a course like this will have you well on your way. You will learn the intricacies of baking, the ingredients normally used as well as how to add your own personal flair to your creation. Imagine the looks on your dinner guests faces when you come out of the kitchen with a pie or cake that looked and tasted better than anything you see at your local bakery’s storefront window.
The sheer variety in world cuisine offers many opportunities for would-be chefs. And a proper culinary education is the best way to find out exactly what you excel in and what you wish to pursue as a career. There will never be a shortage of people wishing to eat, so the opportunities are endless.
It is important that you understand exactly what aspect of the culinary arts interests you the most before embarking on a career. Catering, cooking, recipe preparing and management are only a few of the things that are covered within the confines of a proper culinary education.
What you want to give and what you want to get out of it are the two most important questions to consider when thinking of a career in this field. There are many culinary schools out there that will be able to take the talent that you already have and meld it into a rewarding career.
It is important to note that a successful career in the food industry does not happen overnight. You need to assess your skills, decide on your target market and above all, have the education to back up your claims. But if you have a love of cooking and a love of great food, a culinary education will be able to grant you the career you have always dreamed of.
