“Online education could be the perfect path to improving your job skills, finishing a degree, or changing careers,” says Susan Deane, Author of ONLINE EDUCATION, Is It For You, “especially if you want to improve your lifestyle and income.”
The problem is that not all online education is right for everyone and there are important pitfalls and traps to avoid.
As an online education expert, Susan Deane takes the mystery out of deciding how or if to pursue an online course with her simple tips and strategies based on experience as a student, teacher, and now, course developer.
If you’re considering online education, first take this easy quiz (and be honest!)
Online education was meant for you if most of these statements describe you-
- I cannot commit to a regular schedule.
- My family and/or work responsibilities make it difficult to attend regular college classes.
- I don’t have specific degree prerequisites.
- I’m motivated to succeed.
- I have the determination to complete a course successfully.
- I want to accelerate my degree completion.
- I want to complete courses that are not locally available.
- I sometimes travel for business or pleasure.
- I enjoy communicating using my writing skills.
Still not sure? You might try taking a course to find out! There’s very little to lose and LOTS to gain.
When it comes time to select a full online study program, here are some guidelines for avoiding the pitfalls and traps that are out there:
DO:
- Ask around for recommendations. If you don’t need an accredited degree, a professional speaker or trainer might be your best online teacher.
- Expect to work for your degree. Online does not mean free ride.
- Be realistic with how many credits you can handle at a time.
- Pick a degree or course that really interests you, especially if self-discipline is not your strong suit.
- Most universities offer some credits for life/work experience and of course you may be able to test out of some required classes. Expect that the experience and skills you have need to be verifiable before you can apply it to a degree program.
AVOID:
- Scams that are sneaky and often copy entire websites of real colleges but delete the contact information. Refer to the directory put out by the Council for Higher Education Accredidation to be sure you have a legitimate degree program. Those few minutes of online search can save you a real headache later.
- Sites that care more about your credit card than your skill level and past education.
- Life-experience only degrees. They may sound easy, but are never legitimate and there are laws being passed that make them illegal to use on certain job applications. (Really, who wants a doctor who has never taken a medical class but watched a lot of reality tv?) Don’t expect your experience to save you more than a quarter to a half of your education time and cost.
Fitting your lifestyle:
- If you don’t work well alone, find a study buddy. Preferably a co-worker or local friend. They don’t have to even be working on the same thing.
- Use your own personal computer. You’ll be glad you did.
- Schedule class time and study/homework time. While flexible hours means you pick when, they still need to happen sometime. Portable MP3 players may give you even more flexibility with finding time to listen to recorded lessons.
- Take advantage of study groups, online forums, your professor’s email, and local study buddies.
Take the quiz, try these strategies out and you’ll easily and confidently enjoy earning the legitimate online degree you want without putting your life and work on hold.

The cost of a college education is never considered cheap, no matter if you attend offline or online. However, online courses can be more expensive than their offline counterparts at times, as universities try to make up for the missed opportunity costs of parking on campus, room-and-board, textbooks, etc. Also, the level of your courses, whether it be for a bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degree will also determine the cost of the courses you take. The choice of university where you choose to attend online classes can also affect the cost of your education.
Online courses will sometimes be more expensive at universities that have better or more prestigious reputations than those that are not as well-known or well-recognized because employers look more favourably upon those graduates who have completed their degrees at universities that are more well-known or have more prestige.
Because of this, your current employer may be willing to reimburse you for all or part of your tuition, especially if the courses relate to your current occupational field and if you plan on staying at your current place of employment. In fact, 40% of students that are attending corporate training programs are having their employers pay for all of their tuition.
The cost per credit can vary greatly from university to university, some costing as little as $150/credit to as much as $500/credit. With a difference as much as $350/credit, the costs of taking a course at one university can greatly exceed the costs of taking a similar course at another university. Of course, you need to be aware of whether that cost is justified based on the reputations of the universities and the quality of the instruction at each, then decide whether the higher cost is worth it or not.
Consider also that tuition at for-profit institutions like the University of Phoenix and Kaplan University is usually less expensive than that at not-for-profit institutions like Saint Leo University and Lehigh University, BUT you might be eligible for in-state grants by attending a not-for-profit institution, whereas you wouldn’t be eligible if you attend a for-profit institution.
Something else to consider when deciding between attending for-profit and not-for-profit institutions: For-profit institutions are considered more flexible scheduling-wise and more focused on job-specific curriculums than not-for-profit institutions, but not-for-profit institutions are more likely to be regionally accredited, transfer credits more easily, and are usually considered to have more name recognition and be considered more prestigious, which could help to make the difference when interviewing for a position with a company.
The difference in the costs of private colleges versus public colleges can also be substantial, due to the fact that private universities don’t receive financial support from state and local governments like public universities do. Private institutions have to rely on tuition, fees, gifts, corporate contributions, and endowments. Public universities receive a large proportion of their budgets from state or local governments because they are government-run.
Besides the cost of the online courses themselves, you also have to take into consideration what you will need to complete these online courses, including a powerful enough computer and a stable Internet connection. High-speed Internet connections, which usually cost more than dial-up, may be advantageous to quickly download the course materials and be able to play back the video and audio lectures more fluidly without as many interruptions.
By considering all these factors, you can determine which university will provide you with the programs you wish to take and the benefits you wish to receive at the lowest possible cost.

Society has been changing at an extremely rapid pace and what was once considered the standard progression of life events has transformed into something very different. Fifty years ago, in a day where the world had never heard of such things as obtaining an online degree or ISPs, young girls learned typewriting in public school only to settle down with a husband and children. Boys became breadwinners, moving into their father’s shoes to take over the business and continue the family legacy. These goals in lives were to be admired and respected, their pattern of daily life and expectations to be desired.
These types of restrictive roles in life no longer fit anyone in our modern, information filled world. Having children is being put off or sometimes even set aside completely for bigger things and grander goals. Women are coming out of the kitchen, shedding the mother role to be psychologists or lawyers, while men learn to be hard driven, competitive professionals in the business world. What links most individuals in top paying careers today no longer has to do with which store your parents worked at, but which university provided them with the credits they needed to receive a solid, recognized online degree.
Online degrees have transformed over time as well. The education that used to be offered by negligible ‘degree centers’ or certification offered via the distance courses of twenty years ago are incomparable to the quality of virtual education today. Training centers would mail papers and documents that students would read, study or work on and return to the center, again by mail. The process was slow, open to cheating, and the degree at the end of the course never really earned the respect of potential employers or businesses. Today’s online degree programs are efficient, recognized and of the highest quality. Indeed, college and university students directly on a reputable education facility receive exactly the same training and information as the same facility’s distance education students taking the same courses. Top ranked colleges offer most of their courses online and the curriculum, material and quality standards of education are identical to that being offered on campus.
In fact, an online degree may be more valuable, possibly having even higher quality content than classroom material. Usually, only top professors are the ones asked to construct courses for students geared to receiving their Bachelor of Arts or their Masters’ Degree through distance education. Having an expert who can provide material rich lectures (exempt of the background noise, shuffling feet and coughing that you would hear if you were in the lecture hall) and recommend the latest, best textbooks to compliment the course may be better than the live person at the front of the room delivering lectures. While most people do enjoy receiving information through human contact, humans will be humans, which means they can fall sick and be absent, forget to mention crucial points, or get distracted by something else going on in the room and lose their place.
The convenience of studying to receive an online degree is one of the biggest selling points in distance education. At many educational facilities offering online degree programs, students are not required to take full course loads per semester, which means that the working person or time crunched individual can have access to education as well, and take one course per season to bank up credits towards their degree. What’s more, students can achieve their online degree goals relatively cheaply, eliminating the need for housing and transportation. Usually all that’s required is a computer and an internet service provider. Ease of access and the ability to attend lectures or work on course material at any time of the day, in the comfort of our own home, is a very large reason why more and more people are turning to online degree courses.
Certainly, education in any form, be it in a virtual world or the physical one, is very important. Only through information can we better ourselves and use the knowledge we’ve acquired to improve our lives. With accredited educational facilities able to provide high quality training at the snap of our fingers in whatever form we prefer to receive it, people are now able to acquire better training and skills to move forward in the world and aim for their attainable goals.

Going to school is about more than just signing up. While you might think that an online associate degree is as simple as registering for a few classes, sitting at the computer for a few hours when you feel like it, and then collecting your degree, that’s not quite how it works. When you’re choosing to get an associate degree online, you need to be ready for the kind of school that you are going to; a virtual school.
The online educational system is growing in these times of careers and families. There are more nontraditional students than ever that are looking for an alternative to walking about campus and sitting in classes during the day. These students need to have a school that works around their busy life. With an online associate degree program, you can make sure that your children are taken care of and that you can still maintain a full time job, if you’ve prepared yourself ahead of time.
The beginning step of getting ready for an online associate degree is to research your possibilities. With literally hundreds of degree programs, there is certain to be one that will suit your budget as well as your chosen course of study. Take your time as you select the school that seems to be the best fit. Read through their websites and see how easy it is to find information. In fact, if their website is difficult to navigate and seems too distracting to read, you might want to find another school. A website for an online school that doesn’t work for you might be an indication that the program itself might be a bad match.
Once you’ve chosen a school or two, you will then want to see if you can preview a course with them. Talk to an admissions counselor to see if you can look at a syllabus for a course that you might take so that you can look the time schedule over as well as the workload. If the syllabus isn’t a clear indicator, you might want to consider taking a single class first to see if you can handle the work that you might have to do. When you’re taking the class, you can get an idea of how the school works for you before signing up for an entire round of study.
Another thing to consider when you’re looking at an online associate degree is whether or not you have the time to spare. Before you even sign up for classes, you will want to start looking for that extra time in your schedule and start reserving it for school. If you can get up early in the morning, start doing that now to see how it fits into your current working or family schedule. If you think that nighttime will be the best option for your schoolwork, then try staying up late during those hours. Once you feel like you could use that time for schoolwork, you might want to start signing up for classes.
An online associate degree will also require that you have a basic understanding of how to use a computer and the Internet, at least on a basic level. It can help to take a community class or two about word processing, spreadsheets, and any other computer programs that you think you might need to use. This will help save you time learning these skills as you’re trying to learn the information from your classes as well.
Being prepared is the best advice for anyone going to any school. When you’re in an online program and on your own, you need to think and plan ahead before you start trying to earn that degree.

Just as with any education decision, an online bachelor degree should not be something that you take lightly. In this day of fierce competition and an even fiercer pace, learning is one of the reliable methods to furthering yourself and your career. But are online bachelor degrees something that will get you to where you want to go?
The idea of an online bachelor degree can seem too easy. Because there’s no real classroom and no teacher than you can see necessarily, it sometimes seems like a completely virtual landscape that might not carry the same weight as a traditional university setting. While that might have been the case in earlier years of correspondence classes and courses, the Internet has proven to be the right setting for learning about the global marketplace. You can reach out to distant schools and learning resources without ever leaving your home or stepping on campus. And because the Internet has become so widely used, the idea of being schooled through its technology is also becoming more accepted.
The first thing that’s on your mind is whether or not your next employer is going to look at your online bachelor degree and feel that it is legitimate. After all, you don’t want to spend a lot of your time or your money on something that might be deemed worthless in the place where it matters the most. According to recent studies, businesses hiring professionals are now considering an online degree to be just as acceptable as a university degree. However, it does depend where you get your online degree. For example, choosing a widely known school is the better option than the cheapest Internet educational institution that no one has ever heard of. A good rule to follow is that well known schools are equated with turning out well respected degrees.
There are a vast number of online bachelor degree programs to choose from as well. For example, you might want to take a business degree program or private sector accounting. Others like the option of taking the in demand health services programs. No matter what you might be interested in, there may very well be an online school for you, so thinking that you can’t find what you’re looking for from an online bachelor degree isn’t really a good excuse.
And of course, there’s the question of whether or not the college environment is something that might be necessary for your career in the future. Maybe there really is something to being on campus and interacting with fellow students. With an online bachelor degree, you might actually find it easier to study and focus on your studies because of the lack of social interaction and peer pressure. However, if you feel that you need that sort of stimulation, perhaps an online degree is not a good fit.
Just as with any serious schooling, you will also want to ask yourself about whether you can handle the pressure and the work that goes along with an online bachelor degree. Because the courses are more intense due to the limited interaction with a teacher and a student, you might have trouble motivating yourself to do the coursework on your own. An online bachelor degree program is very much self guided, and that can teach you very quickly about the importance of time management.
The choice to get an online bachelor degree is one that only you can make. However, if you’re looking for a campus that’s always open and that can give you the individualized attention that you crave, going to an online school can be a great way to get a degree.

Education in general is extremely important to be on the cutting edge of business, technology and social groups. You need strong credentials and the certification only a reputable, accredited college can provide you with to be able to be seen as someone valuable to a corporation or business. In the past, students of all ages would enroll in colleges and universities, expending valuable time and money to travel to classrooms and listen to lectures to earn credits, but modern ways have changed the way training is delivered to individuals. The new way to earn your education is to become one of the thousands of students taking courses via the virtual world from top educational facilities. Online college degree programs are an excellent way to land the skills and abilities you need to compete in a fast paced, shark eat shark world, but are distance education courses for you?
Some of the pros involved in earning an online college degree are that cost is low, accessibility is easy, and convenience is very high. There’s no travelling back and forth from a campus to home, nor is it necessary to live in dormitories or rent an apartment in another city or state. Travel and lodging alone is a large chunk of expenditures when considering the goal of a college degree. There still are some costs involved in taking courses via the internet. No student will be able to avoid the cost of textbooks or course materials and enrolling with an educational facility for an online college degree means that access to a computer is imperative. However, having a computer, course materials on hand, and all lectures on audio file means that students can work on their credits at any time of the day or on certain days in the week, unrestricted by on site college schedules. Also, students can enroll in one or many courses to earn their online college degree at their own pace, slowly over the years as time and real life permit or as quickly as if they were taking the same full time curriculum as any student on campus.
While studying at the best time of the day for you in the comfort of your own home might seem very attractive, working towards an online college degree demands a certain amount of self discipline and, because of that, can be easily set aside as other distractions or priorities seem to take precedence. The control of being in a classroom has to be recreated in your home, no mean feat for some people. Otherwise, the lack of being able to devote time to your studies may mean that you end up not submitting work, missing tests or possibly even flunking the courses you need. Not only is self control an issue when working towards your online college degree, the environment around you will have a large effect on your ability to concentrate or accomplish your task to the best of your abilities. Studying at home often means distractions, such as televisions, telephones, or family have to be taken into account, which may mean a restructuring of your home organization.
Lastly, achieving an online college degree demands one vital thing, that you are comfortable with a computerized environment, as well as being able to type, manipulate software and know your way around the virtual world. Those comfortable with technology will have no issues at all with online learning and will probably complete their tasks efficiently, but those who aren’t familiar with computers or who have a fear of pressing the wrong button will certainly find taking online courses a daunting task. Having access to education is one thing, but in a virtual world, being able to know your way around a computerized environment will mean the difference between obtaining your online college degree or floundering badly. However, there are many places offering free or nearly free instruction on working with computers and the amount of time required for a small course most likely won’t be more than a month or two. After that, you’ll certainly be adept and confident enough to handle online education.

There are, in fact, a few schools that offer an online nursing degree. You can obtain your registered nurse (RN) degree online as well in many cases, at least with partial work experience offline as a requisite portion to the course. You can earn your associate’s degree in nursing, for example, and apply for your initial RN license online which will lead you to a completion section of actual experience testing offline at a school or nursing location that will give you the chance to practice practical skills. The online nursing degree program can be very challenging but it is also very rewarding.
As mentioned, when you are enrolled in an online nursing degree program you complete the majority of your course work in online classes or in an online sense with the work being completed at your leisure during your time. This constitutes the non-clinical portion of your online course work, of course. For the clinical portions, you would be transferred to an arranged medical facility near your home at which you could complete the clinical trial portions and your grade would be assembled through this work and the combination of your work online during the non-clinical portions of the program.
How The Classes Work
The online nursing degree program likely varies from school to school in terms of the basic details, but most of them operate under the same fundamental principles. The classes are generally hosted on the web site of the school itself. The teacher or instructor would post lecture materials and assignments on the site, usually using a bulletin board format on which the students may post comments or questions. There may be a designated chat time at which you may log in and post real time comments and questions to your teacher but for the most part you are on your own time and can use the bulletin board to complete your work and discuss the topic at all hours of the day.
Assignments in the online nursing degree programs are then generally emailed to the instructor on the proposed due dates. For the majority of online classes, written coursework takes the place of the exams because exams become problematic. Some schools may require some students to spend some time in classroom discussion at the campus, but this is generally not the case. Many online nursing degree programs require the students to complete a certain hour of the day designation to demonstrate that they are completing the right amount of course hours.

An accredited online college degree is ideal for the business field because it is primarily a knowledge-based profession. Another reason why the business world is a perfect place for this degree is because you can earn this qualification in many different fields. With a growing business world that is becoming much more specialized, it is important to carve a niche. Whether the focus is on accounting, management, marketing, or any other part of business, an accredited online college degree will push you to the top.
Recent business trends show that businesses are looking for people who are leaders. They want highly motivated individuals who will have the initiative to take their corporation to the top of the business world. When you go out on your own to earn an independent degree in the business field, you show a desire to learn and get better at what you do. This hunger for success is something that will undoubtedly attract the eye of employers everywhere. In addition, by gaining more education in business, you will have an updated knowledge of business practices. College students who earned their degree thirty or forty years ago probably have the basic background knowledge on common business practices, but likely lack the modern expertise.
New accredited online college degree programs also offer a crash course in communication. According to employers at fortune 500 businesses, the one characteristic that new workers lack is the soft communication skill that allows them to work well with other people. By gaining new experiences within your online courses, you will be better suited to take on the challenges of an ever-changing business world.
Accredited online college degree programs are an excellent and exciting opportunity for experienced business professionals who need that little boost. They offer not only a chance to improve educational credentials, but the capability of doing that on your own time and at your own leisure. By gaining this experience, you will become much more marketable in a competitive business world.

There are many people who wonder about an online bachelor degree program and what exactly the advantages might be. As these programs begin to gain acclaim, there will continue to be questions. Potential students will want to know what they offer and whether an online degree is better than a degree from a regular university. The myths continue to pile up when concerning these things. If you are considering getting your degree online, then you must be educated about the different programs. Here is a look at some of the myths that are often associated with online bachelor degree programs.
Myth number one, an online bachelor degree program is not as recognized
This is absolutely not true. Online programs are just as recognized as any university. When you are considering where to get a college degree, it is important to make sure the university is accredited correctly. While this is a concern with most four-year universities, you should take special care to ensure that the program of your choice is accredited. If you gain an education from an accredited program, then it will be as respected as any university in the nation.
Myth number two, problems with reputation
Online degree programs are becoming more popular with universities all over the world. Even popular four year universities are offering some sort of online bachelor degree program for certain students who are more suited towards this format. Many people believe that because a degree is earned with an online university, it does not carry as much clout. Online degree programs are geared towards individuals that do not have the time to take in a four-year education, or are possibly even continuing their education. Employers understand that, as well. With an online education, you will gain as much respect as with any other college degree.
Myth number three, businesses are more likely to hire a person with a traditional bachelor degree
Studies show that businesses and employers show little preference for one over another. Generally, simply having completed college is the qualifying aspect that will get you in the door. After that, your qualifications, experience, and personality will land the job. In many cases, applicants who hold an online bachelor degree will impress employers. In getting this degree, it shows that the person had the initiative and drive to gain the education needed and become more qualified for the career they wish to pursue. Businesses are always looking for people who have that motivation.
Myth number four, the price is too high
Compared to many four-year universities, the price is actually very low. While it may seem like you are paying a lot for the cost of running the online program, in most situations the price per course is much lower than a university. You must also take into account that gaining this degree will afford you the opportunity to make more money in the future. Not all online programs are the same. Like with traditional universities, they can be divided into categories. Private, public, specialized, and religiously based online universities offer different things. Finding the one to suit your needs will go a long way toward gaining a quality education at a value.
Online bachelor degree programs are growing in popularity and employers are taking notice. Despite common myths, there is no stigma associated with obtaining your education online as opposed to a traditional degree. By gaining the education qualification and valuable experience, you can position yourself to move to the top of the business world in a hurry.

If you have a pretty good job, but you are looking for something a little bit better in your career, do not immediately think of changing your profession. Maybe your career just needs a little kick in the rear. Many employers are out there searching for qualified individuals to help strengthen and improve their organization. Maybe it is time for you to go ahead and get those qualifications through an online degree program.
For most, going back to a four-year university simply will not work with schedules and budgets. By gaining a bachelor degree online, you immediately become much more marketable to hiring executives and your career stands a decidedly better shot at advancing at a steady rate.
Receiving an online education offers the utmost in convenience for the working professional or even an individual just starting down the career path. Leave the stress and angst of a college career behind, as you can learn at your own pace and at your own leisure. Imagine waking up in the morning, turning on your computer, and completing a couple of assignments while you finish the last of your morning coffee. If this sounds like your idea of an education, then an online degree program is for you. Designed for the busy working professional, these programs put all of the responsibility on the student, allowing them to complete the coursework when they can rather than assigning due dates and other burdensome deadlines.
If it is the monetary aspect that your career is lacking, then getting your bachelor degree is the best way to boost the bottom line. Studies show that over the course of a lifetime, a college graduate will make almost twice as much as a person who holds only a high school diploma. With a bachelor degree from a great online degree program, you will have an extra one million dollars in earning power over the course of a lifetime. With that sort of success, isn’t it time for you to get that college degree?
Online degree programs come in many shapes and forms, but the general idea is the same. Whether in general business, something more specific, or even an advanced program like computer science, a person who holds a degree from an online degree program makes themselves much more marketable than the average professional. By gaining this extra education and knowledge, you will be showing potential employers or even your current boss that you have the motivation and initiative to be successful in business. You want them to understand that it is your goal to succeed in the highest form, not simply to slip by doing the bare minimum.
The advantages in choosing this method of continuing education are almost endless. By going back to school in a setting that allows for personal growth at a steady, self-determined rate, you can guarantee your own success. Graduates of an online degree program are looked upon by potential employers as people who are on the cutting edge. Take updated knowledge of a specific field into that interview and expect to land the big job that you have been waiting for.
Time has never been better than it is right now to work on receiving your degree. More people are going back to school and gaining a degree that will give them the ability to live the life they always dreamed of.

Most experts will tell you that if you do something you enjoy, the better you will be at it and the less it will feel like work, which will encourage you to continue doing your best at it.
If you are currently in an occupation that you loathe, chances are, you won’t want to spend the rest of your working career doing it, as both your mental health and your physical performance will suffer because you’ll just be going through the motions, which will likely lead to you faltering in your work, which will probably lead to your dismissal, so it is advisable for you to find an occupation that you will truly enjoy doing for the next 30-40 years of your life.
The key to finding your perfect occupation is finding out what your interests are. To do that, you should examine your hobbies, what you do in your spare time, what you like to do for fun, etc. Talking with friends could help you find out what you are really passionate about.
You should also take advantage of informational interviews, or interviews with people who are already in the field you are interested working in, to see what this field is all about and what you need to do to be able to enter this field as an occupation. Plus, that person who you interview could become a good network contact in the future as well.
Once you find out what you are really passionate about, you should do some research, online and/or at your local library, to determine what fields of study would encompass that activity. You also should determine what courses you would need to take to obtain a degree in those fields of study and see if you are still passionate about that field.
Of course, it would probably be prudent of you to choose a career that is lucrative and that will be around for a long time. Such careers as data-entry clerks are being phased out, being replaced by technological means and automated systems to complete those tasks, so it wouldn’t make much sense for you to pursue a career in an occupation like that that might not exist ten years from now. Careers such as computer technology and information services are careers that will likely be around for the foreseeable future and would be ones you might consider if you are interested in computers, information, and technology.
Once you decide what career you want to pursue and verifying there is a market for it, you need to determine what universities offer degrees in that field and what courses you need to take to obtain that degree. You should also determine how long it will take you to complete that degree, based on how many credit hours you can take a semester. You likely won’t be able to take a full-time student’s schedule (usually 12+ credit hours) because of the other responsibilities in your life, so you shouldn’t expect to obtain your degree tomorrow; it will take time, perseverance, dedication, and patience in order to obtain that degree, but in the end, it will all be worth it since you will have a higher degree, which can lead to higher salaries in your field, and thereby, a better lifestyle for you.

When considering a college to attend, many students are choosing from the wide variety that now offers online classes. Many students have to work while attending college and these classes provide them with the freedom to do so. It also allows students to attend a highly accredited university that may be located far away without having to worry about travel expense. The mistake that many students make is that they assume that “online” means “easier” and they soon find out that is not the case at all. It takes a lot of discipline to attend this type of school because you set your own hours so there’s no set time that you are forced to be there. There are some easy techniques that these types of students can use to assure their online training success.
One way to achieve your online degree is have a set time for studying. Chances are you chose online training because of work or other responsibilities that did not allow you to leave the home. That means you have to find the time to meet the study requirements of the course while still attending to your other duties. It’s best to train yourself to study at a certain time each day so that you can develop a routine. Turn off your cell phone and focus on your work, so that you will never fall behind and be able to maintain a good grade point average.
Once you have determined when you are going to dedicate yourself to studying, find a peaceful spot to do it in. This may take some pondering if you live in a noisy environment. You can go to the local library or if the weather permits, a peaceful park that offers few distractions.
Don’t hesitate to ask questions from the personnel at the school. Instructors lead many courses. You should also make sure that the school that you choose has ample ways to communicate with the teachers, be it through email or forums. You may also find online study groups that use chat rooms to compare notes and answer each other’s questions.
Since you are learning in an unstructured environment, procrastinating may become tempting at times. Don’t fool yourself into thinking that it will be easy to catch up. Your time is probably limited to certain hours of the day, which is why you chose this type of college to attend. These hours aren’t going to get any greater, so falling behind will make it extremely difficult to catch up. You spent a lot of money for this training so don’t be tempted to waste it by putting off your studies.
Once you have completed your studies and earned your degree, don’t feel compelled to put on your resume that the school you attended was online. Simply put down the degree you earned. Not every employer respects colleges of this type; so don’t bother to mention it unless you are specifically asked.

If pursuing an online education is a relatively new venture for you, there will probably be some frustrations as you get started. But if you prepare ahead of time to minimize those frustrations you’ll be much further ahead.
Taking college classes online is an entirely new lifestyle. You have to mentally prepare yourself, and the people you live with, for this new lifestyle. You will have to let them know gently but firmly that you need that time to yourself when distractions are to the minimum. Though online courses are built with flexibility in mind, you will still have to maintain a schedule for your online time in order to meet your goals. Communicate this schedule with your household members. It will make it easier on them and you.
Make sure that you have a computer that is capable of the technologies employed by the college to communicate course material and activities. Also make sure your Internet connection is reliable. If you feel that your computer skills are rusty, brush up on them and try to learn touch-typing before you start your course. It can come in really handy especially if your course employs a lot of discussion groups and chats.
Each online college will have a published set of guidelines and policies. Make sure you familiarize yourself with them. If you feel that certain policies are not being met, bring it to the notice of the authorities immediately.
Make sure that you find out all costs associated with the course before embarking on your studies. Costs that spring up mid-course, when you least expect them are more than just unpleasant surprises. They can potentially be deal-breakers.
It always helps to be proactive. Be proactive before you start pursuing your online education. It will pay off big time.

There are many different career paths in the dental field today. Choices include a wide range of positions, such as: hygienist, assisting, and lab technician.
Yet perhaps no other career in the dental profession is more accessible and exciting than that of the office manager. The dental office manager works much like the conductor of a large orchestra — his/her job is to organize the many different aspects of a dental practice into one cohesive unit. This person serves both the patient and the dentist, and is able to juggle both responsibilities equally well.
The dental office manager is usually the first and last person to meet and greet the patient. He/she registers patients, arranges laboratory and hospital services, schedules appointments, verifies payment information, protects patient privacy, and even processes insurance claims. Serving as the face of the practice and being actively involved in the healthcare of others is one of the most enjoyable facets of this line of work.
A dental office manager also enjoys the opportunity to assist the dentist(s) in maintaining a well-organized, cost-effective practice by handling the day-to-day operation of running an office. He/she may oversee personnel issues, handle payment and billing duties, maintain accurate and complete patient records, as well as, an equipment and supply inventory. Helping an office to run smoothly and effortlessly in order that all staff can perform their job well can be a rich and satisfying experience.
Choosing a career in dental office management provides many opportunities to use a cross-section of skills, such as, effective multitasking, communicating with diverse groups of people, and team leadership. Entering this field can be a quick and easy mission with the right training and assistance from a qualified learning institution.
Get ahead of the game by choosing dental office management today. Most entry-level positions enjoy salaries that start around 23,000 and a job growth that continues to rise at a steady rate. There’s never been a better time than now to explore a rewarding career in dental office management.

You are positive that you want to pursue a career in front desk work in a dental office, but you are unsure if your resume will get you there. There’s reason to worry; most employers use a job applicant’s resume as the main item in determining if they will bring you in for an interview or not.
Many job seekers are in the dark when it comes to developing a winning resume and cover letter. They make a number of mistakes that may cost them a potential job, such as: not stressing their skills and accomplishments enough, use of wording that is vague or confusing, not providing enough relevant information, using a sloppy format, and providing too much information.
There is no one correct resume format to use, but since many of you will not have a lengthy employment history yet, it is recommended that you use the functional format. The functional format emphasizes your relevant skills and training and is great for first-time job seekers. It includes the following sections, in the order provided:
1.Objective - phrase your career objective to match the position for which you are applying. For example, if your goal is a front desk position, then a good objective would be: Position in a dental office utilizing my strengths and training in customer service, administrative duties and office technology.
2.Education - list your education in reverse chronological order, starting with the most recent first. Include relevant courses or special projects.
3.List specific examples of your skills and training. For example, to demonstrate customer service skills.
4.Provide activities that are applicable to your objective. You can use school, community activities, and volunteer activities.
5.Employment History: Include this section only if you have a work or intern history.
Your name, address, phone number, and email address information should be centered at the top of the resume. Use an email address that sounds professional; do not use an email address that is amusing or inappropriate.
All impressive resumes and cover letters are well-written and avoid spelling and grammatical mistakes. They are typed and professional and are no more than one page in length. They provide relevant information that is appropriate to the position. Weed out irrelevant details by asking yourself if a piece of information will help you get an interview; if it doesn’t, then don’t use it.
Your cover letter should make the employer want to read your resume. It typically has three paragraphs: the opening, body, and closing. The opening should state the position for which you are applying and how you learned about the job opening. The body should highlight your skills and qualifications for the position. And the closing should request an interview and suggest a time for your follow-up call.
Always address the cover letter to a specific person - don’t use “Dear Sir or “Dear Doctor.” Find out the name of the person you should send your letter and resume to. Make sure you spell all names correctly and use proper grammar. Print on the same quality and color of paper as your resume and do a separate letter for each job that you apply for.
Use the tips and guidance provided here to make your resume and cover letter stand out above the rest in your pursuit of that great position in the dental office profession.

Many people criticize that online video games can lead to an increase in anti social behaviors, including violence, loss of communication skills, and even health issues such as obesity. While these facts in many cases are true, what critics have yet to recognize is the amazing power of video games on the mind. Critics seemingly agree for the most part that online video games can increase hand eye coordination, however what the same critics have yet to recognize is the power these games can have on the brain. This article will address how such games affect the mind, and where you might find some fun brain games.
Online educational games offer players brain training that can help one actually become more intelligent. These games work by testing the cognitive functions of your brain like memory, reasoning, logical decision making, and so forth. Try to visualize yourself spending time working out at your local health club to get your body in shape, playing educational games is like taking your brain to the same gym to get it in shape.
Educational games are often synonymous with words like boring, un-cool, and primitive. The truth is that educational games can be as much fun as any other game, often times they can be more fun because of the rewarding nature of educational games. Think back to that game of trivia you played with friends several years ago, do you remember how good it felt to get those answers correct? That’s the type of feeling one can get from playing an educational game. The more people play these games the greater their confidence becomes within themselves. With greater confidence people will have a better chance of succeeding at whatever they put their mind towards achieving.
The best place to play educational video games for free is on the internet. The internet has provided a platform for educational learning like none before. Educational games have become more sophisticated to cater towards users interests. One obvious interest for users is learning skills they can use in the workplace. One example of where this is occurring is in the dental management field.
After you play a few rounds on the website, ask yourself if you’ve learned anything new, you’ll be surprised by the answer.

When it comes to your children, you want the best. Home schooling is your chance to shine, as not only a parent, but as a teacher. By keeping your child at home, you are able to conduct their lessons in a timely and efficient manner and help you child to stay on track with their education. To make sure your child’s home schooled education is successful, there are several things you can do.
The first, while it may be obvious to some, is the most important. You want to make sure that you and your child are on the same page. You’ll need to sit down with your child and explain the steps that will be taken to ensure their education is successful.
Setting up a scheduled time for their education is important. Just because they are receiving their education at home does not mean they do not have a schedule. In fact, with home schooling, it is very important that your child does have a schedule and it is up to both you and your child to stick to the allotted time. Before you start, talk with your child and discuss what is the best time of day to start. Some children are best right after breakfast and others do better at learning after they’ve been awake for a couple of hours. The wonderful thing about home schooling is that you know your child and how their personality and disposition will work throughout the day.
Once you have planned out a schedule for your child, you’ll also want to get organized. Make sure you involve your child in this, as well. If you have an area of your home or a room that is relatively quiet and relaxed atmosphere, this will work best for your child. Setting up a designated area for your child’s schooling will help your child to understand the difference between school time and play time. When you have picked out the area, you and your child should make sure it is furnished properly. Your child should have a comfortable desk and chair, as well as all the items necessary to complete their home schooling, such as paper, pens, pencils, and anything else you may need.
By knowing when and where their home school will be, your child will be more successful in taking care of business when it is time. Having all the necessary items your child will need can take the edge off, as well and the more you involve your child in the planning and organizing of their school day, your child will be more apt to participate in their learning.

A glance at a clothing boutique, a brisk walk down city streets, or an earful of automated customer service messages is proof positive that we live in an ethnic melting pot.
Our world has stretched its borders and every person wanting to take advantage of that shift needs to know how to speak English. If you want to be the person that teaches them, you need the TESOL.
Knowing how to read, write, and speak another language is no longer a trend of the future but a way of life for the present. The knowledge of another language and culture is a powerful leveraging tool in every sector of society, and that means there are huge opportunities for English teachers overseas. But even beyond the career potential, the TESOL can open your eyes to other cultures. Studies show that children who are multilingual grasp concepts more quickly, and even the elderly are increasing their very quality and span of life by using natural forms of medicine that hail from continents beyond North America.
Given the impact that world customs are making within our borders, the TESOL exam comes to the fore in preparing for a career teaching English overseas, locally, or just to retain a global outlook on life. While foreign speakers can access self-help curricula, it is helpful to have an instructor, because a person-to-person guide makes the language come to life in a way that far exceeds the textbook experience.
The question arises about the need to take the TESOL exam. Here are some things to ponder:
To Thine Own Self Be True. Taking the test is a sound tool to assess your actual level of linguistic competency. Once you have this knowledge, you will know your strengths and weaknesses with respect to the language.
Talk the Talk, make the coin. Taking the TESOL will equip you to effectively teach a world that wants to speak English, leading you to a career that can take you through Asia, the Middle East, Europe and beyond. Many of these nations can be places you earn a lot more money than you’re used to at home.
Taking Care of Business! Gone are the days of only conducting business on the West Coast and East Coast. The real movers and shakers see as many possibilities in India as they do in Indiana. Making a mark in the marketplace can be done as people expand the scope and breadth of their linguistic skills.
While training others to speak a native language and embracing world culture is favorable, there is another consideration to be made. As the test is administered and the vast majority becomes multilingual, more competition may arise in the marketplace. Those who were once seen as a “cut above the rest” - based on their command of several languages - may now be deemed average. There is also the possibility that the mixing of ethnicities may cause the discrete differences to be lost in a sea of cultural compromise.
Nonetheless, it is difficult to ignore the truth that stares us square in the face. This truth is that our world has now become our next-door neighbor. The choice is up to us. Only we can decide whether to open the door or to remain behind closed doors. It’s that decision that will dictate whether we make the grade and ultimately pass the test.
The bottom line is simple: Millions of people need to learn to speak English. They’ll pay you to teach them. And the TESOL is the first step to making that happen.

For those who are new to distance learning, it is imperative to understand how distance learning works. With the onset of the technological revolution, the sphere of distance learning has earned an unprecedented advancement. Where earlier, distance learning meant course material being sent to the student through the mail, today students can interact with teachers and fellow students through mediums like web-cams on the internet.
Interacting Asynchronously, but Feeling in Sync
As opposed to a traditional classroom atmosphere where student and teacher interact in real time, in distance learning the interface is asynchronous, since the student and teacher are separated physically. Instead of sticking to a water-tight schedule, virtual learning allows students to choose a time best suited to them for attending classes, in other words asynchronous classes. Some courses even allow recording of interactions and instructional proceedings that have occurred earlier for later review by any student. How distance learning works effectively is measured by the amount of comfort that exits between student and instructor. Prompt feedback and personal interest in the student’s progress is a prerequisite from the instructor and at the same time a student is required to be pro-active in asking questions and raising doubts. Healthy dialogue and group discussions are the best ways to learn in a virtual classroom.
How Does Course Material get Transmitted
Some online courses have scheduled chats between students and teachers to enable one-on-one interaction between them, and give them a feel of real-time contact. Most of the colleges design student friendly course structures, since the aim of distance learning is to reach out to people who cannot follow the traditional methods of education. For example, at University of Phoenix Online, classes mostly last for 5-6 weeks and the mood for a particular week is set by the professor who lists topics to be discussed and assignments to be prepared. This is followed by the professor posting his lecture and discussion topics. The students then work on their assignments and reference work, as well as participate in online discussions with fellow students. The assignments are sent to the teacher via email, and he in turn grades them and returns them with comments. How distance learning works efficiently is dependent upon how best the students and teachers use the technology being provided to them.
Here we have taken a look at how distance learning works, since it is vital for any student to understand the basics of how a course functions before getting involved in one.

An introduction to distance learning requires first, an understanding of the concept itself. While various definitions exist for distance learning, it would be safe to say that distance learning is a mode of education in which the teacher and student are separated in time and place. The concept of distance learning has been around for ages in the history of mankind, albeit the use of the latest technology in the modern era has added fuel to the fire and given distance learning a boost.
Distance Learning Tools and Technology
Distance learning uses various means and methods to transmit course material and education to students, who could be distributed throughout various parts of the world. In an introduction to distance learning, we would be correct if we said that distance learning seeks to deliver the same traditional classroom experience to students sitting in their living rooms through non-classroom means. Today, distance learning uses various means like regular mail, high-tech tools like the internet and audio-video conferencing to help teachers correspond with students, and vice versa. Today, a host of synchronous and asynchronous tools are available for individuals who are involved in distance learning.
What are the Choices Available?
Distance learning courses are ideal for people who do not have the time or the means to pursue a fulltime college curriculum, but have the drive to study further. Distance learning includes undergraduate degrees, professional diplomas and Post Graduate Certificate courses for people willing to learn. From courses in liberal arts, humanities and social work, the gamut of distance learning encompasses courses in business management, technology, public health, law, medicine and accounting as well. To put it in a nutshell, distance learning has something to offer everyone, provided you have the inclination to learn.
Who is Offering Distance Learning?
Most reputed universities and colleges across the world are offering distance learning courses to students willing to learn further. The University of Phoenix Online has courses at both bachelor’s and master’s levels. The South University also offers undergraduate and advanced courses to students online. The Keller Graduate School of Management offers business degrees at a master’s level to students. The Independence University - California College of Health Sciences offers certificates and diplomas at associate, bachelor’s and masters levels in health education to people thus inclined.
This, in brief, has been an introduction to distance learning. With the latest technologies and tools the world has indeed become a smaller place, and the impact of the IT boom is reverberating in the distance education sector. Like everything else in the world, you have to understand both the advantage and disadvantage of distance learning. Much depends upon the student undertaking an online course - how he best utilises the pros and cons of distance leaning. For some, if the flexibility that distance learning has to offer is a boon, for others that flexibility might become a difficulty in keeping themselves motivated. There are two sides to any coin, and an individual willing to take up distance learning needs to analyze and understand both the advantage and disadvantage of distance learning.
The Advangages
The most promiment advantage of distance learning is the flexibility it has to offer to students. Anyone, anywhere can realize their dreams of education through the various distance learning programs available online. In today’s hectic world, distance learning makes it possible for a home-maker or a busy professional to pursue further studies while allowing them to continue in their respective roles in everyday life.
By breaking down the barriers of a typical classroom and the need for phycial attendance, new vistas are opened up for students by allowing them to learn from the convenience of their homes. You get to work at your own pace, and have your privacy. Gone are the pressures of rushing to attend classes on campus, the student is his or her own boss in distance learning and that turns out to be an important factor when considering the advantage and disadvantage of distance learning.
The Disadvantages
If flexibility is a boon for some, for other students it could turn out to be a deterrent. Owing to the lack of a physical teacher and a classroom, it might get difficult for some students to motivate themselves to study harder, and complete assignments on time. Procrastination is a drawback, and people who have a tendency to take it easy should stay away from an online course. Also, due to the nature of online learning, students do not get to enjoy personal interaction with fellow students and teachers; there are no group discussions that one can take part in, and the social part of the education process is lacking in distance learning.
Whatever be the case it is up to the individual to survey the advantage and disadvantage of distance learning, and decide for himself if he is up to the challenge. In distance learning you are your own competitor, and to succeed you need to motivate yourself continously. If you are up to it, then distance learning is for you.

Distance learning and academic libraries have a symbiotic relationship, and the steady support of library resources is vital in making any off-campus courses a success. Academic libraries have continuously supported various forms of teaching on campus, such as regular courses and distance learning in its traditional form as well as its new online avatar. Libraries need to aid the educational process in any higher education institution, and cater to a variety of publics, including students, administration staff, and faculty, regardless of the location. In this day and age, it is important that library personnel are up to date with the mediums of technology being employed for delivering online courses, so that they can provide undeterred assistance to their patrons.
How do Virtual Academic Libraries Work?
Most of the virtual libraries linked to universities offering distance learning programs work in a fashion similar to a physical library. Every student enrolled in any course with any particular college is given a Personal Identification Number, which the student needs to provide to the library manager along with the course details he/she is enrolled in for accessing library resources through email. Most of the colleges give students a unique username and password thereafter, which can be used to browse library catalogs and locate specific articles.
A lot of universities have mutual information sharing, wherein if certain information requested by a student is not available in the library resources of the college he is enrolled in, he can request it from a library resource of a partner college. The University of Houston for example, has a program called ILLiad (Interlibrary Loan internet accessible database) for requesting delivery of books and articles. Any student enrolled with the University of Houston can make a one time registery with this particular delivery format to receive books and articles in the future. Distance Learning and Academic Libraries supporting this form of education have changed the way a traditional library works.
Requirements for Virtual Library Personnel
Virtual library personnel need to have an indepth knowledge of changing technologies and especially of the mediums that a distance education course employs. Understanding the workings of distance learning and academic libraries’ role in making it a success is hugely dependent on how the library personnel implement their knowledge. Library staff today are well versed with technology, and have been long time internet users. Moreover they are familiar with inter-library loans and document delivery and are masters at organizing information.
It is essential to realise that distance learning and academic libraries are partners, where the library staff can work together with the faculty to design online courses. Moreover, due to their prociency with computers, librarians can work as technology advisers for most of the faculty and students of a distance education course. And that is the shape of things to come.

When it comes to a distance learning degree program, the options that are available to a willing student are indeed quite substantial. There is a wide range to choose from, as each college tries to offer on a platter, something for everybody. From the classic degrees of law, technology and humanities, to the more specialized, professional courses like nursing, public relations and accounting, most colleges today want to reach a greater student audience, and distance learning allows them to do just that.
Some Example Programs
Most of the colleges classify their online degree programs by levels or specializations, and may offer Associate Degree Programs, Diplomas, Graduate and Post Graduate courses. The University of Phoenix online offers a range of courses for students wanting to enroll into a distance learning degree program, offering courses in business, technology and nursing which students can finish in a matter of 2-3 years. The Boston University also offers online degree programs, and has a cutting edge distance learning degree program for the IT sector. For those seeking management degrees, Devry University’s Keller Graduate School of Management is a great option, where working professionals are the faculty members and the students can apply whatever they have learned during the degree program, at their workplace for better practical knowledge.
Most of the universities and colleges, understand that the students of an online degree program are faced with other demands in their non-student lives. To make it easier for an online student to learn and to encourage them to perform better, most colleges take care of bringing flexibility into their course design. This makes learning a much more comfortable experience for students who are willing to learn, but might be hard-pressed for time.
Admission Requirements
There are many choices available for anyone wanting to opt for a distance learning degree program. While some colleges require an admission test, or a written essay for enrolling into their courses, some others may look for your High School Diploma, along with letters of recommendation. Still others are more lenient with their admission procedures and might allow non-traditional students to enroll as well, and one needn’t necessarily have a high school diploma to enroll into a distance learning degree program in such a case.
Be certain to research the various colleges offering the course of your choice, and upon making sure that you have all the necessary requirements, go ahead and chase your dream of earning a degree.

Types of Distance Learning High School Online Programs
While choosing an online course, it would be wise to check the credentials of the schools offering such courses. Online high schools can be of two types - private schools and public charter schools. Private schools may or may not have an accreditation by a regional association, and work independently of the government. Like any traditional private schools, these online private schools have rules and regulations of their own and generally have higher tuition fees. If you wish to enroll in a private distance learning high school online, make sure that diplomas issued by them are recognized by most colleges, when you pursue higher studies. However, some reputed universities like Brigham Young University and Indiana University are today offering online high schools, and are a safer bet since they have associations with well established educational institutions.
Public Versus Private Schools
As opposed to private schools, distance learning online high schools which are public charter schools are publicly funded and provide free education to residents of the state. In case you wish to apply to a school outside of your state you might be asked to pay the tuition fees. Public charter schools work on government rules and regulations and are accredited. The Blue Sky School in Minnesota and Choice 2000 in California are good examples of Public Charter Schools.
Distance learning high school online programs are a good option for a variety of students. And courses pursued at an accredited high school, will be recognized by all colleges. So if you are a student who can keep himself motivated, has good comprehension skills and wants to study on his own time, an online high school diploma course is the right choice for you.

It helps a student to know the disadvantage of distance learning while considering taking up a course offered through this medium. New Age educational tools like e-courses are a godsend to people who want to study further but do not have the means to do so, however it is not necessary that every individual is cut out for distance education. So while weighing your options for advanced learning through distance courses, be sure to assess the downside of it and determine if your personality is compatible with distance education.
No Space for Procrastination
The greatest disadvantage of distance learning is the constant self-motivation that a student needs to keep himself from lagging behind. In distance education, a teacher and student are not in the same room physically, and there is no real inter-personal interaction between them. In case of an assignment submission in the traditional form of education, the constant reminder by your ever-present teacher may put the necessary pressure on you to perform. However, due to the remote nature of distance learning, the students might find themselves putting work off for another day. Moreover this procrastinating attitude hurts student’s prospects, as they will find it difficult to keep to timelines and complete the necessary assignments.
Technological Know-How is Critical
The reach of online means of distance education has increased over the last few years as the IT sector has flourished. However, not everyone has access to these upgraded technologies, and there are millions who might not have the technical proficiency to utilize these resources to their optimum. People who live in remote areas may not have access to computers; moreover the high cost of computers keeps some people from purchasing one. Even if they do, their systems might not be compatible with the new technologies and they would be unable to use the educational tools. In such a case, distance learning is rendered futile, as low penetration of computers and high internet costs turn out to be an alarming disadvantage of distance learning.
Further yet, even though distance education has seen an unprecedented rise in the last few decades, the mindset of many people is still negative about its effectiveness. Though educational institutions are fast adopting this means of teaching, there is still time before online education becomes a first choice for students. A positive attitude and greater technological awareness seem to be the cure for this disadvantage of distance learning.
