Why Is Ink More Expensive Than Blood

Anybody who has ever owned a printer would have been heard bemoaning the price of an ink cartridge - and rightly so. A printer is a complete waste of space unless you are going to keep up with its lifeline of an ink supply so you have no choice but to keep forking out for it. But what do you get?

A tiny plastic box with 42ml of ink is what you will get for this extortionate price. And when your computer is telling you, you have run out of ink, you will take out the cartridge, shake it, find there is still some in there and be infuriated that it won’t work for your last sheet of printing before you go out and replace it.

So why, I ask, are these things so expensive? Is there a world shortage of ink? Is there a world shortage of the skills needed to refill these little plastic boxes? Not if the shops are to be believed. In most streets in most towns you will find some corner shop advertising ink cartridges, ink cartridge refills and the like. They all declare discounted prices only to get you inside and find that yours is the one rare ink cartridge that costs four times the price of all the others.

In recent research carried out into the price of certain fluids, ink that goes into ink cartridges was found to be one of the most costly fluids on the planet. The researchers purchased a 42ml ink cartridge for $30 which works out to be $0.71 per ml. However, at $200 for 500ml of blood purchased from the Red Cross, this fluid is only $0.40 per ml. How can this be so and would it pay us all to start writing in blood. After all, it would be cheaper.

So, what of those who have a high blood/alcohol ratio? Would this be worth more or less? The price of vodka currently works out at roughly $0.04 per ml so with more of that in your blood, unfortunately you are going to be worth a great deal less than an ink cartridge. Red Bull works out roughly the same price per ml as vodka so you’re no better off diluting the stuff.

At the time of going to press, although this could well have changed by now, the price of a barrel of crude oil was actually cheaper than ink, blood and vodka and red bull. Penicillin is less than $0.10 per ml so being ill is cheaper to fix than an ink deficient ink cartridge.

Not the facts themselves but the pure realisation that a commodity that has been around since time began is now so expensive that it is worth more than the very fluid that sustains human life. Surely there is no need to keep prices where they are. Maybe we should do a protest just as they do with their attempts to bring down oil prices.

Which Is Best For Home Theater - Plasma Or LCD?

It’s become one of the great home theater rivalries…Plasma television versus LCD. Which one do you buy as the showpiece for your best home theater system? Plasma or LCD?

Maybe it’s a guy thing… I’m not sure but when I went shopping for my television, my better half, my gorgeous wife or “she who must be obeyed”… call her what you like, just didn’t seem to care what type of television I purchased, Plasma or LCD, just as long as it produced a good quality picture.

Let’s make some comparisons about the respective merits of either version. When setting up a home theater center the television is the centerpiece so you want to make sure you get this right. I will list what I consider the advantages of either type.

Plasma Advantages

1. Definately screen size. Plasma tv’s are available in size from 32 inches, all the way up to over 100 inches. Certainly an advantage if you prefer the bigger screens.

2. Viewing angle is an interesting debate. Some say plasma while others say LCD. Maybe plasma “by a nose” but there is nothing in it. LCD’s have improved markedly though and are rapidly gaining the upper hand in this area.

LCD Advantages

1. LCD tv’s are definately tougher and more durable, not that you’ll be tossing the thing around the back yard! They certainly hold the upper hand in the “durability stakes.”

2. Installation is usually a breeze with LCD’s where plasmas require a little more installation know how.

3.LCD’s are lighter although this could have something to do with the fact they are smaller however, they are also thinner than plasmas. Whether this is an advantage I’m not sure and in the end, it may be up to “the eye of the beholder!”

As you can see, there is not a lot of difference in my opinion.

Life Span

There is always an argument for and against concerning plasma and LCD life span but to be honest, there is not much difference between either version. You could reasonably expect to get 15-20,000 hours use from either television before backlights need to be replaced however, replacing an LCD part will cost you more than a plasma at this stage of the evolution in technology.

Picture Issues

LCD’s are perhaps more consistent in the area of picture brightness during normal conditions of light but under home theater situations, plasma will have the edge.

Pixel issues are again line ball with both plasma and LCD having their for against arguments. Burn-in issues were once a drawback with plasmas but technology in recent years has “levelled the playing field” in this area.

Which Is Best?

I’d rate plasmas as the choice television for a home theater set up. Let’s face it, you’ll more than likely use your home theater to catch up on plenty of movies. However, with technology advancing so rapidly, LCD’s are gaining more and more of a foothold.

What did I buy? Plasma. Why? Because in the end, I got a great deal on a set which was on sale and hard to resist at the price. I’m betting this may ultimately sway your decision as well. And yes, my better half was more than pleased!

LUXURY INSTITUTE: Luxury Institute Retailer Survey Finds Nordstrom Rated #1 in Customer Experience

Wealthy customers voted Nordstrom the brand that delivers the best customer experience with a category-leading rating of 84 in the new Luxury Customer Experience Index survey (LCEI) from New York-based Luxury Institute. Bergdorf Goodman and Neiman Marcus were second and third with respective scores of 81 and 80.

Wealthy customers rated seven of the largest luxury retail brands based on direct individual experiences with each company. These included (alphabetical order): Barney’s, Bergdorf Goodman, Bloomingdale’s, Brooks Brothers, Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom, and Saks Fifth Avenue.

“Nordstrom achieved the highest purchase incidence among luxury retailers rated, with 51% purchase incidence among responders, also achieving top ratings in customer experience,” said Milton Pedraza, CEO, the Luxury Institute. “This is a significant achievement. It is very challenging to be a large luxury retailer and deliver a consistent, best-in-class customer experience, as rated by your own wealthy consumers. However, the rewards are worth the effort. Nordstrom Customer Retention index of 87 rates five points higher than its’ nearest competitor. Its ‘Price Worthiness’ index led all retailers. It is also the luxury retailer best able to generate ‘Customer Referrals’ from wealthy customers.”

Bergdorf Goodman was rated highly by the 5% of wealthy consumers who had recent purchase experience. The brand’s LCEI rating is competitive with Nordstrom among consumers under age 50 and those with annual household incomes of at least $500,000.

This new Luxury Customer Experience Index (LCEI), delivers measures and indices that capture critical drivers for Customer Experience, as rated by each brand’s customers, and goes far beyond traditional customer satisfaction measures. Dorthy frequently shops a local giant retailer. There is something about the open atmosphere that she enjoys. She can usually find everything she needs in one place, which keeps her from driving all over town. She likes to stroll through the parking lot with her cell phone to her ear. It is a security measure to let others know she is safe, and she also believes it looks cool. When she exits the store she usually carries her packages in her hand.

Whichever method of shopping is most fun for you, do it. Maybe you will go on a special lunch date with your spouse and power shop for the kids. Maybe you will make a daytrip to the most festive outdoor mall with some girlfriends.

It is easier for me to stay in the Christmas spirit if I do not have to feel like I am searching for the best bargain on every single item. I would rather find the exact perfect gift and then use a coupon code when purchasing it online, rather than running all over town (or all over the world wide web) to find it cheaper. That probably costs me a little more in the end, but it saves me a ton of time.

6. Look for quality and personality, not quantity. Nothing squashes my Christmas spirit more than focusing too much on the price tag. (Have I spent enough on this person, have I bought her enough gifts? Will I give their family as many presents as she will give my family?) When shopping takes on the air of competition, it is no good. Look for things that are beautiful, lasting, heartfelt, and sentimental.
