The translation of these four words is: “A Great Miracle Happened There.” In Israel, the last letter on the dreidel is peh instead of shin. To play the Dreidel Game, you start with a “pot” in the middle. The “pot” can be made of candy, coins, chocolate gelt, or any other small thing of value, although most times children play with gelt. Gelt is the Yiddish word for “money,” but in this context, gelt often refers to chocolate coins widely available during Hanukkah. Each player is given a certain amount of gelt and puts one piece into the center to start the “pot.” The players then take turns spinning the dreidel, and whichever side faces up (or whichever Hebrew letter is pointed to) when it stops spinning determines what you do:

If the letter NUN is facing up, you do NOTHING.
If the letter SHIN is facing up, you PUT ONE piece of gelt into the pot.
If the letter HEH is facing up, you TAKE HALF the gelt from the pot.
If the letter GIMEL is facing up, you TAKE ALL the gelt from the pot.
If ever the pot is empty, each player puts one piece of gelt into the center. When a player runs out of gelt, he or she is out of the game! The winner is the last one left in.

Shabbat - Blessing or Bother

Shabbat, blessing or bother? Take the time to learn a little about this often ignored concept, invest in a few salient pieces of judaica to enhance your experience, and sit back and experience something that can transform your life!

The most important commandment in the Torah is to observe and keep the Shabbat, the Sabbath Day. The commandment was first alluded to in Genesis 2:1-3 and then officially given to the Israelites in Exodus 20:8-11. The Hebrew word “Shabbat” literally means “seven,” and the LORD commanded Israel and all future generations to observe Shabbat (the seventh day) and keep it holy, which means from sundown Friday to sundown Saturday.

Traditionally, Jewish families who observe Shabbat will light two candles on Friday evening just before the sun goes down. The woman of the home will light the candles, move her hands over the lit candles three times, then cover her eyes as she says the b’racha (blessing) that welcomes the Shabbat into the home:

“Baruch ata adonai, eloheynu melech ha-olam, asher kidd’shanu b’mitzvotav v’tsivanu l’hadleek ner shel Shabbat.”
Blessed art thou, O L-rd our G-d, King of the Universe, who has sanctified us by thy commandments and has commanded us to light the sabbath lights.

Once the b’racha has been said, the woman can take her hands from her eyes and look at the lit candles, then say, “Shabbat Shalom!” This reason for this specific ceremony, repeated all over the world in Jewish homes every Friday night, is often unknown by the woman doing it! In Judaism, one must always say a b’racha (blessing) before doing an action, and so, before the candles are lit the Shabbat b’racha must be said. However, once the b’racha has been said it is Shabbat, and it is not allowed to light the candles, since lighting a fire is considered “work.” How to get around this? The woman of the home lights the candles, covers her eyes so that she cannot see them, says the b’racha to welcome in the Shabbat, and then, voila, removes her eyes to see the candles which are wonderfully lit!

After the candle-lighting there are readings and songs, as well as a b’racha over a kiddush cup of wine, followed by a b’racha over two plaited loaves of bread, called challah, which is broken and eaten during the ceremony. Challah is special because it is made with an egg in addition to water and flour. It often rests on a special challah plate or tray and is covered with a challah cloth which can come in many different designs. There are two loaves of challah to remember that the Israelites, after they were freed from Egypt by HaShem, were fed by manna in the wilderness each day, but on the sixth day there was a double portion given so that they would not have to work to gather food on the seventh.

Following are the blessings over the wine and the challah:
“Baruch ata adonai, eloheynu melech ha-olam, borey p’ree ha-gafen”
Blessed art thou, O L-rd our G-d, King of the universe, who creates the fruit of the vine.

“Baruch ata adonai, eloheynu melech ha-olam, ha-motzi lechem min ha-aretz.”
Blessed art thou, O L-rd our G-d, King of the Universe, who brings forth bread from the ground.

The Shabbat ceremony is then followed by a Shabbat meal, which is normally a good meal with a nice tablecloth and the best tableware/flatware. It is also considered a “mitzvah,” a blessing, to have guests to stay for Shabbat dinner.

As Shabbat draws to a close at dusk on Saturday, the havdalah ceremony commences. During this ceremony, the father of the family lights a havdalah candle with multiple wicks. He then places his hands on either side of the flames so that there is light on his palms and darkness on the backs of his hands. He praises G-d for the separateness between the light and the dark, the Jewish people and the other nations, and Shabbat and the other six working days of the week. He says a b’racha over the candle, a b’racha over a kiddush cup of wine, and a b’racha over a spice box filled with sweet-smelling spices. To conclude the Havdalah ceremony, the candle is doused in the cup of wine and everyone says, Shavuah Tov! Have a good week!

Judaica Made in Israel? What You Don’t Know Does Matter… To Israeli Artists!

It is a little known fact that much judaica and Jewish gifts are actually made in India and China. Until recently, these items were almost universally just imported into the USA and distributed through almost all the major judaica importers. However, since the more recent encouragement to buy things that are made in Israel, a practice has arisen with a few companies whereby they import judaica from India and China into Israel, and then export it out from Israel selling it to those who don’t know as “From Israel” when in fact it is not Israeli at all.

Understandably, there are many many Israeli artists that are upset by this practice, since there are stricter regulations for manufacturing, including the use of children in adult employment. Plus, the quality of workmanship is higher in Israel, and these artists continue to struggle while the other products dominate the market.

It may be that you cannot find what you want that is made in Israel, and of course there is no need to feel that you cannot buy other products, but if it is important to you to support Israeli artists and manufacturers, then don’t be afraid to ask WHERE the item you are looking at is actually made, and BY WHOM so that you are an informed buyer!

Here are a few reasons to “Buy Made In Israel”:

1. Although you may pay a little more for genuine “Made in Israel” Judaica, you will get better quality.

2. When you buy Judaica made in Israel, you are supporting the artists who live there. The tourism industry in Israel is very weak right now, so any support you can lend to Israel really does make a huge difference. Remember, it is multiple small drops of water that make up a lake or an ocean.

3. Judaica from India and China is sometimes cheaper, but some of it is made by children who are working long, unacceptable hours. If you’re buying something for a religious purpose, why would you buy it from a child who is being overworked & not protected by employment laws?

The Jewish freedom fighters arose because Antiochus Epiphanes had forced the Jewish people to practice Greek culture and forbade them from reading the Torah. The insurrection was first led by Mattathias the Hasmonean, and later by his son Judah the Maccabee. This is why the freedom fighters came to be known as the Maccabees. Even though the Maccabees were outnumbered, after three years of fighting they were able to recapture the Temple mount and begin to repair the damage that had been done to it. However, when they went to rededicate the Temple and light the menorah, they found only enough oil to burn for one day, but they knew that it would take eight days to make and consecrate more oil.

In faith the Maccabees decided not to wait the eight days, but rather they lit the menorah right away with the remaining oil and a miracle happened as the oil continued to burn for eight days while new oil was being made and consecrated! For this reason, Hanukkah is celebrated for eight days each year, beginning with the 25th day of Kislev, and it is also often known as the Festival of Lights.

Hanukkah, the celebration that commemorates this significant victory, and miracle, literally means “dedication.” Each evening the Hanukkah menorah is lit, with one more candle being lit every day until all the candles are alight. The 9th branch carries the shammash (or “servant”) candle, and this is used to light the others. When you place the candles in the menorah, always place them from right to left, but when you light them you should do so from left to right. This is to give honor to the newest member.

Once the candles are lit, let them burn out on their own, and do not use their light to light your room and do work or read by, but rather just to be looked at to be appreciated and enjoyed. The light from the candles in the Hanukkah menorah are not supposed to provide light to see by because they are not supposed to perform any work. The purpose of the candles is just to serve as a reminder of the miracle of the oil that burned for eight days in the Temple.

The Hanukkah menorah has 9 branches. Eight of the branches represent each of the 8 days the menorah burned in the Temple after the Maccabees defeated the Syrians. In order for it to be kosher, all 8 branches should be on the same level, however there are some contemporary menorahs available now that have the branches on different levels, and many people now also use these menorahs. The 9th branch is set apart from the others, often slightly higher, and it holds the Shamash, which literally means “servant.” The Shamash is lit first and is used to light each of the other candles. The first night of Hanukkah, you light the Shamash plus one. On the second night, you light the Shamash plus two, and so on until the end of Hanukkah.

There are traditional blessings that should be recited before the lighting of the menorah, two each night and one extra the first night only. Before one recites the blessings over lighting the candles at Hanukkah, the following prayer, known as the Shehecheyanu, is said only on the first night:
Barukh atah Adonai, Eloheinu, melekh ha’o-lam she-he-che-ya-nu v’ki-yi-ma-nu v’hi-gi-a-nu la-z’man ha-zeh. Amein.
Blessed are you, O L-rd, our G-d, King of the universe Who has kept us alive, sustained us, and enabled us to reach this season. Amen.

On each night the following prayers are said:
Barukh atah Adonai, Eloheinu, melekh ha’o-lam a-sher ki-di-sha-nu b’mitz’vo-tav v’tzi-va-nu l’had’lik neir shel Hanukkah. Amein.

After the lighting it is customary to sing Maoz Tzur (Rock of Ages), a traditional song, as well as other Hanukkah songs. Many times the children or adults will play the dreidel game while the candles are burning, do hanukkah crafts, eat chocolate gelt, cook up a platter of latkes & sour cream, or read the story of hanukkah aloud. Often there are latkes and sofganiot (jelly donuts), as well as chocolate gelt and other goodies. Any food cooked in oil is traditional during Hanukkah, but the most popular is probably potato latkes, traditionally served with sour cream and apple sauce.

Hanukkah menorahs themselves come in all shapes and sizes. They can be made out of silver, gold, pewter, brass, ceramic, stone, wood, glass, or just about any other material. In some homes, each person in the family has a Hanukkah menorah, including the children. Many contemporary menorahs follow a theme such as sports, pets, trains, the city of Jerusalem, flowers, etc. Contemporary menorahs will have the branches on all different levels, as in the Tree of Life menorah. Some menorahs even substitute electric lights for candles, and there are as many themes out there as you can look for. You will find that many users sell or buy .01 cent items inorder to raise their feedback score and possibly scam you.

Now you need to take a look at the actual car that is being sold on ebay. Yeah sure it’s nice to see the pictures but do you really feel comfortable buying a car without seeing it in person? Buying and collecting abstract painting can be a labor of love. I love abstract paintings. I think that my favorite medium is gouache. I recently purchased a work from Oscar Bluemner. The person I bought the abstract painting from had it in storage for over twenty years. I am going to hang this piece in my office.

I found an oil abstract painting that was dated 1947 that was painted by Louis Bassi Siegriest. I liked the composition, it felt oddly soothing. The artist signed the back of the painting. It was a little out of my price range, but I bought it anyway.

Trade Winds is the name of an abstract painting I bought from the artist Joanne Riddle while I was in Connecticut. The piece was huge and I had to have it sent by freight to my home. The blue in the painting was so vivid. The whole composition was absolutely inspired.

I bought an abstract painting for my sister-in-law last year. The artist of the piece was Leonardo Nierman and the medium he used was oil. I bought the piece unframed and took my sister-in-law to framer to choose the frame.

I tried to buy an abstract painting from the mayor of our town. I offered him two thousand dollars for the modernist abstract colorful figure. The artist used red, white and blue and I wanted to acquire this for my stepmother. She would have loved it, but the mayor was unwilling to part with it.

My mother has decorated her home in a style that she liked in Santa Fe. I bought a large abstract painting for her from her favorite artist, Lou Monti. She has seen his work in a number of homes and always raves about them. She was so happy when she saw the painting I bought for her hanging on the wall of her living room.

I dated a guy once that had a signed abstract painting by Robert Gilberg on his wall. I saw something different every time I saw it. That painting had an attraction that I just cant quite explain. He was always buying art and changing out abstract paintings on his walls, but this particular piece always stayed. I guess he was attracted to it as well.

The abstract painting that I bought for my older brother did not work in his apartment. I ended up buying a painting that was a little too large for the room it was intended for. The colors did not work in the only room that worked for its size.

I ended up selling that abstract painting the same place that I had bought it, on eBay! I ended up making a profit on the abstract painting. There was more information in my auction about the artist, Richard Diebenkorn, than there had been in the auction that I won. I think the extra hour of research I spent made the abstract paintings value increase.

I learned a long time ago that an abstract painting is worth exactly as much as someone is willing to pay for it. I have friends that just cannot be convinced of this basic truth. I think that if no one wants a particular abstract painting, then it is worth nothing.

My brother used the money from the sale of the unwanted abstract painting to find himself another abstract painting. He ended up with an abstract collage that was made in the late 1930s. I liked it when I saw it and it worked beautifully in his office.
