An Apple A Day Keeps The Doctor Away

Food and Drink No Comments

“An apple a day keeps the doctor away”, this is what my sis and I grew up with. My mom made all possible efforts to drill this into us. She felt it was the best way to get us to eat an apple without a fuss (a really fussy eater I was till I started cooking. Only when I started cooking on my own did I actually realize how much of effort my dear mom would have put into making each of the yummy dishes).

My mom was definitely successful in her efforts and so “an apple a day keeps the doctor away” became a part of us in no time. It was the rule until we grew up, however, while in university somebody added a new twist to it? An apple a day keeps the doctor away, however, if the doctor is handsome keep the apple away. No doctor seemed so interesting that he was worth keeping the apple away for. However today with in-laws being doctors this is something that we all have a good laugh over.

Coming back to apples, this is truly a wonder fruit. Available in so many varieties and sizes red, green, big and small you would be able to find just the one to suit your preferences. It has several properties that goes to make it a wonderful source of nutrition.

Apples are known to work wonders preventing several types of cancers namely the prostrate cancer, lung cancer and colon cancer. A native of the Central Asian region, the apple is high in fiber and is effective in regulating the bowel movements. Apples are also good for the heart, a symbol of romance apples help in controlling cholesterol levels and are also helpful in weight loss. With high antioxidant properties, apples must definitely be a part of our diet to stay healthy and fit.

With fruits and vegetables making a major difference to our overall health and well-being it is advisable to include a generous helping of a variety of fruits in the daily diet. Apples are definitely a must have whether raw or in some other delicious form.

When eating them raw, do ensure that you wash your apple well before consuming it. This is very important considering the harmful insecticides and pesticides that form a layer on the surface of such fruits. Organic apples - a great choice as you eliminate all the harmful effects.

There is scope for a lot of experimentation with this wonder fruit. From apple shakes that tastes great with honey to apple pies and tarts they are truly heavenly. Apple pies with crisp pie crusts and delicious soft apples on the inside can be absolutely divine. Baking an apple pie can be a lot of fun too. I remember once trying an apple crumble recipe. The recipe was simply superb as a dessert. Served with a dollop of ice cream it was indeed an instant hit.

I liked this video by Scott too, wherein he has shown how to go about making caramel apples. I like caramel strawberries or the chocolate dipped strawberries but doing them with apples did add a good twist. There’s definitely a lot you can do with apples.

So, the next time you meet a handsome and interesting doctor - you definitely know what to do. Don’t put the apple aside, treat the doctor to a delicious apple pie and you can be sure of what to expect. Remember the way to a man’s heart is definitely through his stomach:).

Fish - The Healthy And Nutritious Way

Food and Drink No Comments

I was watching the channel “Discovery Travel and Living” the other day. Food related shows are definitely one that catches my attention. They are a great source of information about food in particular and of course not to mention the numerous wonderful recipes. Last evening was what I call a “foodie evening” on the channel. This is one reason that I love Thursdays. There is nice program titled “Floyd’s India” followed by “Indian Cooking made easy” with Anjum Anand hosting it.

In Floyd’s India, he chooses a destination each time and is acquainting his audience with the cuisine of the particular place. He actually does cook some of the traditional or popular recipes. The first episode was on Rajasthan, a state in India. This week however, he decided to put up his tent at the popular tourist destination - Goa. A wonderful episode for seafood lovers. He cooked fish, crab and even mussels.

A sweet coincidence or must I say a “fishy coincidence” that Anjum Anand too decided to have “fish” as her theme for the evening. She cooked delicious lime rice and served it with traditional Indian fish curry from the state of Maharashtra (fish cooked in coconut milk and coriander). Couldn’t resist it and so it’s fish for lunch today and also my theme for the day.

Fishes offer so much variety. Each fish has it own distinct taste adding that little extra to your dish. So very easy to cook, a little marination and the right ingredients that make it one of the best dishes that you have ever cooked or had. The popularity of fish and chips, I guess does say it all.

A high nutritional value, low in fat and being a rich source of omega 3 fatty acids makes fish a popular choice for a healthy menu. Fish is good for your heart.

It is definitely an important part of several cuisines whether Chinese, Thai, American, French or Indian. The style of cooking may differ from one cuisine to the other however, the final result of a tasty dish is the same whichever style of cooking or school of thought you decide to follow. Fish is wholesome food served with just a salad and a slice of bread. Easy , quick and indeed delicious that’s how it is.

Not many however, may be well-versed with buying and cooking fish. Here are a few tips while handling fish:

-The smell and the looks of the fish are major indicators which would help you make the right decision while buying fish.

-It should smell fresh. It must definitely not have a stale smell. If that is so, then it sure is a no…no.

-It must look appealing. Must look fresh and the skin must be firm. When you touch the skin it must be tight and not leave a depression on the surface. There must be no discoloration.

-The eyes must be bright and red on the underneath.

-Fish cook really fast and so do ensure that you do not end up overcooking it.

With a variety of ways to cook it, there sure is lot of scope for experimenting. Each one to his own taste…that’s the way it is.

Learning The Basics Behind Food Wine For Better Cooking

Wine and Spirits No Comments

If you are one of the thousands of people who don’t know a lot about wine, then this article is for you. Here, you will learn a little something about food wine and what wines should be pared with what foods. It is impossible to learn everything at once, but this will steer you in the right direction. You no longer have to belong to the uninformed masses.

The old rule that white is best with white meats and that red is best with red meats still stands today. Although things are a little more complicated now, it is still a good beginning rule. Another rule to follow in most cases for food wine is that each taste should be counteractive.

What this means is that each taste of food or wine should completely mask the taste of the other. Food wines are supposed to enhance the food’s taste by acting as a palate cleanser, making each bite of food taste as good as the first. And of course, it is vice versa for the wine flavor.

If you can taste the flavor of the wine or food over the other item, then you probably are working with a bad match. It is harder to match food and wine now because so many different flavors of food get worked into a single dish. The best rule for these cases is that the body of it should match the food. Heavier foods get heavier wines and vice versa.

The main determination for food wine combinations is the balance of sweetness, acidity and bitterness of both the food and wine. It is pretty easy to figure out what should go with what foods by considering the wine and food characteristics.

If a sweet food is being served, pair it with a sweeter wine. For bitter foods, a more bitter wine is in order. The best way to determine the acidity of a food is to determine if it would go better with more acid added.

For example, adding lemon to a fish means that a more acidic wine should be consumed. Some common white wines that are acidic are: Rieslings, most sparkling wines and white Bordeauxs. Acidic red wines include: Gamays, Pinot Noirs and Sangioveses. Sweet white wines include: White Zinfandels, other forms of Rieslings and Chenin Blancs. Sweet red wines can include: Port and Lambrusco. There are not many bitter white wines, but there are some bitter red wines. These can include, red Zinfandels, Merlots and Cabernet Sauvignons.

Now you know the basics about food wine and how to pair wines with different foods. There is still a lot more information out there, so if you want to learn more, then you should pursue those options. Joining a wine club is a good option, as well as just doing independent research. This will help you to become quite knowledgeable about wines.

Do You Know Much About The Australian Wine?

Wine and Spirits No Comments

Early Australian wine production dates back to the 1791, when grapes were imported from Europe and wine was shipped back to the United Kingdom. Slowly but surely, Australian vineyards in New South Wales, Tasmania, Western Australia, Victoria and South Australia sprouted up.

The industry was furthered by the Land Selection Act, which freed up land that had been locked for gold rush mine development and the removal of trade barriers when the federation was established in 1901. The industry experienced ups and downs during the world wars, due to space constraints, overproduction and changing British government rules, but by the 1950s, the industry was thriving, with South Australia leading the way. Australians have grown to love and appreciate wine even more over the years as their wineries gain international recognition.

You will likely never forget the first time you try an Australian Riesling: as the white wine explodes with hints of apricot, peat and a particularly sweet-and-sour green grape flavor. Compared to German Rieslings, the Aussie variety is drier, with less sweetness and more aroma. Chardonnay is a relatively new variety in Australia, but you can find smooth or crisp varieties, depending on which vineyard you buy from. The Australians sometimes pair Chardonnay with Semillon white wine.

Semillon itself is a drier white that goes well with fish. Unlike Semillon, which is produced in humid regions of Australia, the Pinot Grigios come from the cooler climate regions and are a crisper, more tart wine, as opposed to aromatic and subtle.

Red wines, like Shiraz, are very popular and include ripe fruit, tannins and spices that complement beef, lamb and pork entrees. Pinot Noirs are smooth reds with a long finish that is delicious with ham, duck and cheese. Drier in nature, Cabernet Sauvignon has a bold taste and deep flavor, and is often popular as a “Bordeaux Blend,” mixed with Merlot.

With so many different Australian climates, the wine-producing regions run far and wide. Just North of Adelaide, which is in the southeast region of Australia, you’ll find Barossa Valley, an area known for its hot and dry climate and for producing Shiraz and Cabernets. North of the Barossa Valley, you’ll find the hotter and drier wines of the Clare Valley, which produces the strongly flavored Riesling, Shiraz and Cabernet.

The most southerly vineyard in the South Australian appellation is Coonawarra, which produces excellent Cabernet Sauvignon, with its limestone subsoils and low heat. In eastern Australia, near Sydney, the Hunter Valley is known for tasty Shiraz, but also its Rosemount Reserve Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.

South of Adelaide, the McLaren Vale produces full-bodied Sauvignon Blanc, Shiraz and Cabernet. In case you haven’t figured it out, Adelaide is a good starting point if you want to add an Australian wine experience to your next vacation!

One of the best times to experience Australian wine is to come during one of the Australian festivals. Every month, the Victorian Wine Regions feature a Showcase Series at Fed Square in Melbourne, which features wine from a particular region. You can chat with winemakers and experts from the selected region and try different wineries all in one convenient location.

If you come during January, then there’s a Tasmanian Fruit Wine Festival. Melbourne’s Food and Wine Festival is in March and the Barossa Vintage Festival in April can’t be beat! Brisbane has a nice Fine Wine Festival in July and the Hunter Valley has a “Jazz in the Vines” series in October. Lastly, the Margaret River Wine Region has a festival in November.

What Is The Best Way To Serve Dessert Wines?

Wine and Spirits No Comments

Food and wine have been paired for centuries, most likely because people believe some combinations just taste better when they are together than when served alone. Traditional rules of pairing are not often followed for modern meals, partially because people have found they prefer to rely on their individual tastes to decide which combinations taste the best.

Dessert wines, however, are almost always served with fruit or bakery sweets, although they are sometimes enjoyed alone after the meal. True appreciation of that type of wine, though, begins with knowing what sets them apart from other types.

Although many vintners will disagree, the creation of a fine vintage does not necessarily begin in the vineyard. Granted, there are a few varieties that are known for being especially sweet, but many of them require additional flavorings to stave off blandness. The sweetness of grapes can even be enhanced by harvesting them later or by exposing them to more sunlight, both of which can be difficult to control.

As a result, many dessert wines are not a result of the grape growing process, but of the amount of sugar added before or after fermentation. In Germany, for example, sugar is increased by adding grape juice after fermentation, which has the side effect of lowering the alcohol content. Other techniques for increasing sweetness include using grapes that have a specific type of mold on them, freezing out some of the water, or drying the grapes before fermentation.

Wines and spirits are classified according to the variety of grapes included, alcohol content, color and flavor, and the classifications vary. In the UK, for example, dessert wines are any sweet wine that is consumed with a meal, while the United States applies that name to any wine that has more than 14% alcohol.

Although the definition may vary by country and vineyard, everyone agrees that they are the sweetest of all wines. Typically, they are not fortified and they have a higher sugar and alcohol content than other types of wines.

There are those who will argue that wines should be selected according to the meal being served, while others feel the selection should be based entirely on what tastes good. Regardless of which side is taken, there is a universal agreement that sweetness is a taste reserved for dessert, whether served with actual food or enjoyed alone. Of course, the best way to decide which dessert wines to serve, and whether to serve it with an actual dessert, is to taste several and figure out what suits your palate.

How to Cook Bajan Fried Chicken-The 4 Best Cooking Methods for This Tasty Meal

Food and Drink No Comments

Bajan fried chicken is an excellent meal for any occasion. There are however, various ways to make it and a ton of recipes to choose from. Some people feel that one method of cooking works better than others, but it is really just a matter of opinion on how you want to cook your chicken. Here are four different ways on how you can cook bajan chicken, so you can choose the method that you feel will work best for you.

4. On the stove top. The most common way to cook bajan fried chicken is to fry it in a frying pan on the stove. Though it does not have to be cooked this way, this probably is one of the best ways to cook your bajan chicken, so that it comes out tasting the best. This method however is not ideal for those that prefer a more healthy meal, since the chicken must be fried in oil. Even so, if you prefer to cook your chicken in this more traditional method, but want something a little healthier, you can try using a cooking oil like Canola or Peanut oil that is better for you.

3. In a deep fryer. Some people want the crispiness and flavor they can receive from frying their bajan fried chicken, but don’t like the mess they can end up with when frying chicken on the stove. If you have a deep fryer, you can use that to fry your chicken just as you would any other type of fried chicken. Bajan chicken does not require any longer cooking time than regular fried chicken, so just follow the same guidelines.

2. In the oven. Some recipes for bajan fried chicken specifically call for you to cook your chicken in the oven. These recipes will generally have complete instructions that will tell you how to cook your chicken in the oven, so that it still comes out crisp and tasty. However, even if your bajan fried chicken recipe calls for you to fry your chicken on the stove top, you can still cook it in the oven if you prefer. While you can still get your chicken to come out crisp, keep in mind that cooking your chicken in the oven will generally result in the chicken coating to be less crisp than it would be otherwise.

1. In a roaster. You can also cook your bajan fried chicken in a roaster, though this really isn’t an ideal way to cook your chicken, as it is very difficult to get a good crispy skin to it. Even so, if this is the only way you have to cook your chicken, you can make it this way and still end up with an incredibly flavorful meal.

Restaurants Can No Longer Hide Waist Bulging Menus

Food and Drink No Comments

A big applause for New York City health officials and a federal judge who have now made it mandatory that NY restaurants clearly post complete caloric content for each item on menus and menu boards. Restaurants with at least 15 chains nationwide, such as McDonalds, Starbucks, TGI Fridays, and Olive Garden, must comply with the new law or face monetary penalties.

Health officials, who acknowledge that more than half of New Yorkers are overweight, believe that the blatant posting of calories will lead people to think twice about eating a 1000 calorie lunch when many diets only allow 1200-1500 for the whole day.

Officials are hoping that this ‘dieting by guilt’ approach will help to decrease waistlines, as well as the heart disease, cancer, and diabetes that obesity contributes to. High level ranking officials from the surgeon general’s office, as well as the American Cancer Society, have confirmed that obesity absolutely increases risk of all three of these top leading diseases. They have also acknowledge that obesity has reached epidemic status in the United States.

Several years ago New York banned smoking in all bars and restaurants. Based on this, the new law of posting calories makes lots of sense, since obesity now kills more U.S. citizens than smoking.

The next time your lunch break includes a Big Mac, Large Fry, and Large Coke from McDonalds be aware that you have just consumed 1350 calories. As mentioned earlier, most diets allow 1200 to 1500 for the entire day. Top it off with a fancy Starbuck’s drink on your way back to the office, and add another 300-400 calories, with some drinks approaching 800 calories.

With some quick arithmetic, it’s not hard to see why obesity is an epidemic. Any extra calories that you bring in that you don’t burn gets converted to fat in stored in your adipose tissue (fat). Our bodies are very efficient at doing this which is why it is so easy to gain weight.

“Something needs to be done about the obesity epidemic. It all begins with education, and our schools and society are dropping the ball. We all need to do more to end this epidemic. We need to do a better job getting the word out about nutrition. I think the courts made a very good decision today requiring that the calorie facts be posted by the restaurants. It is at least a start.” Professor Jay Snaric, author of the 9th Law Diet Plan.

Austin Restaurant Spotlight: Clarksville and West Lynn St

Food and Drink No Comments

One of Austin’s most sought-after neighborhoods, Clarksville offers a close-knit neighborhood feel in a European style, pedestrian-friendly setting. With small privately-owned markets and delicious restaurants all a stone’s throw away, Clarksville residents happily enjoy the best Austin has to offer.

And while Clarksville is home to a number of distinctive shops, including award-winning locally-owned coffee shops and a drug store complete with working soda fountain, the neighborhood’s restaurants are perhaps the largest commercial draw. West Lynn Street alone is home to no less than four unique restaurants, each offering original, delicious fare, and all contained within just three blocks.

The most notable of West Lynn’s restaurants is likely Jeffery’s. A high-class, high-dollar establishment, Jeffrey’s chefs pride themselves on culinary ingenuity. The award-winning restaurant, housed in a small, bright yellow home at 1204 West Lynn, has received accolades as a Distinguished Restaurant of North America and boasts a Wine Spectator Award for Excellence. From ceviche to caviar, Jeffrey’s offers its patrons a wide range of dishes that, while extremely unique, manage to work together surprisingly synergistically for a truly one-of-a-kind dining experience.

Catty corner to Jeffrey’s on the Northern side, at 1213 West Lynn, you’ll find Cipollina Clarksville’s own Italian bistro. With high ceilings, low lighting and massive mirrors adorning the walls, Cipollina offers a wonderful old-world atmosphere in addition to its traditional Italian fare. Delicious wood-fired pizzas, boasting exotic toppings like white truffles, prosciutto and arugula, and tasty items like handmade pastas and lavender me brule ensure Cipollina’s patrons will enjoy an authentic, unforgettable culinary experience.

Just a stone’s throw to the South at 1110 West Lynn sits Zocalo Cafe, in a striking white building with lime green accents, and a long outdoor patio, shaded by overhanging trees. With fresh ingredients, reasonable prices, and bold Mexican flavors, Zocalo’s patrons enjoy delicious tacos, salads and other typical fare in a relaxed Cantina atmosphere the weekend brunch is also very popular. The Posole soup (a zesty concoction of pulled pork) and Mexican Totra are two notable menu items, and the frozen sangria keeps residents of Clarksville and beyond coming back again and again during the hot Texas summer.

Zocalo’s sister restaurant, Galaxy Cafe, lies just across 11th Street at 1000 West Lynn. Offering a similarly relaxed atmosphere and budget-friendly prices, Galaxy’s fare puts an original spin on the typical American diner menu. Clarksville’s answer to fast food, Galaxy treats patrons to specials like grilled mahi mahi and skirt steak with chimichurri sauce, on top of the everyday menu of delicious salads, sandwiches, wraps (the fish wrap, in particular, is a local favorite) and burgers. And like Zocalo, Galaxy’s weekend brunch always draws a crowd.

Regardless of your budget, your mood or your cravings, Clarksville’s own little restaurant district at West Lynn literally offers something for everyone. And the success of each of the four restaurants that dot the street “despite their close proximity to one another” is a strong testament to the quality and popularity of each, and of their ability to keep both Clarksville and greater-Austin-area residents coming back for more.

Food Books Can Turn an Amateur Into an Expert

Food and Drink No Comments

So this is basically a story of a friend, on how a simple set of food books can teach anyone to cook, forget about the master class lessons that cost hundreds of thousands per session and grab yourself an affordable cook book to help picking up techniques.

Basically it was a few years back and someone had asked him to cook a roast dinner, he thought ok this will be easy. So we both went out to the local supermarket where we picked up a selection of the best roast ingredients you can get. When we got back I left and he started initiating the roast dinner. His first task was an absolute failure. He went to cut some broccoli and ended up slashing his finger in the process, from then on it went from bad to worse. The chicken was completely burnt as well as the vegetables.

After this horrendous ordeal he decided to himself that he has to learn how to cook, not only for himself but his family. He did not care how long it was going to take, so his first step was looking at cooking classes most of the places that he enquired for were charging a fortune, so he had to do this marathon himself. He decided to go online and find himself a beginner’s guide to cooking. After reading through the first couple of chapters he started to get the hang of it and I even got offered a bowl of spaghetti bolognaise. But he said he was not going to stop there and decided to get more books but each time he got another the more he was learning.

A few months passed and the same person had asked my friend to cook another meal, whether they were saying this as a joke or seriously he took the task. This time he did not cut anywhere or burn anything and even I was surprised with his cooking. He had made a steak with parsley, garden potatoes and a baguette with hummus.

Now a few years on he owns a nice selection of restaurants all specialising in high standards of food. As you can see in a few years he had gone from not knowing anything to mastering the art of food, all by the art of self teach and determination. So for any up and coming chefs that want to learn more I defiantly recommend in getting yourself a few cook books and learn while you go, you will pick it up in no time.

Healthy Brown Bag Lunches

Food and Drink No Comments

One of the best ways to improve your diet is to stop eating out when you’re at work or school. This can be applied to your entire family. While some may complain at first about the changes in the food, over time they may come to appreciate the flavors that healthy foods offer.

The most important part is to choose nutritious foods to go into the brown bag or lunch box. In other words, no chips, no cupcakes, no candy, no soda. With a bit of work, you can find foods that everyone will enjoy so that the kids are less likely to trade away their healthy lunches.

Here are some of the basics to a good brown bag lunch. Choose three or more, and remember that some may need to be kept in a refrigerator or have an ice pack included to keep things cold until lunch:

* Use a whole grain bread, tortilla, pasta, etc. as a part of the lunch. Whole grains are much better for you, and even kids will quickly learn to love them. In my opinion, they have much more flavor, as well as more interesting flavors.
* Dairy product, such as milk, cheese or yogurt. These, of course, typically need to be kept cold.
* Meat or other source of protein. This can include fish, eggs, nuts and other products.
* Vegetables. A salad is a popular choice, as are carrot sticks, cucumber, celery or bell peppers.
* Fruits. These are popular to use to replace the standard junk food desserts. Kids love apples and bananas, which are pretty much available year round, or a fruit salad is another good choice.

Talk to everyone about what they would like to see in their lunches. It may be a battle to get everyone to quit asking for unhealthy options, but you can get there. You may want to make a list of all the options and have everyone mark off their favorites, so that you know what each person is likely to really eat.

One of the problems with lunches is that they can get boring quickly. Who wants to eat the same old sandwich every day?

A solution to this problem is to vary things whenever possible. Switch the whole wheat bread for a pita or tortilla. Make pasta or rice. Maybe use crackers sometimes.

Vegetables can be made more interesting by adding a dipping sauce. Kids in particular love to dip their vegetables, but grownups are by no means immune to the temptation.

Throw in some berries whenever they’re in season. I’ll be the first to admit that many berries are outrageously priced much of the year. I’ve seen those little things of blueberries for as much as $4 each in my area. On the other hand, when they were in season I bought a huge container of blueberries for about $8 at Costco.

Dried fruits are also fun to eat. Banana chips and dried apple are common favorites.

Don’t get stuck on just making peanut butter and jelly sandwiches or sandwiches with just one favorite meat. Switch the ingredients around. Add special toppings. You can do more than lettuce and tomato on a sandwich. Just think about all the toppings you see at sandwich shops. You can do it too.

What did you have for dinner last night? Leftovers can make a great lunch.

Bringing lunch to school or work doesn’t have to be boring. Just hunt up some good recipes and you’re in great shape.

Something Juicy Can Be Tasty And Healthy

Food and Drink No Comments

Back in the late 1980’s health food stores were intruducing many people to “juicing”. No, not the “juicing” of the bodybuilding world where the term refers to taking steroids. In this case it’s all about juice machines and how utilizing the juice of fresh fruits and vegetables in your diet can help benefit your health naturally.

The theory behind juicing is a simple one. By extracting the juice from a fruit or vegetable, you are taking in the valuable nutrients without all the work of having your body break down the fibers (although preparing the produce can be quite a bit of work!). When you take the juice in this state, you are not losing any vitamins or minerals that might otherwise be lost through a pasteurization process or from having the juice sit on the shelf and deteriorating.

Another benefit is you can consume far more fruits and vegetables in one sitting than you ever could by eating them whole. Have you ever tried to eat five carrots, two apples, a pear and a bit of ginger? It is not easy, however if you were to put those same items through a juicer you could fill a glass with the juice and consume them all at once! This is definitely a plus for those of us that do not enjoy eating fruits or vegetables.

To start with, you will need a good juice machine. The ones you see in the health food juice bars are massive and the bars need those to handle the large amounts of produce they juice on a daily basis. You will not need something quite that industrial. Prices range anywhere from $100 to $1,000, you can find one that suits your budget. Try not to get a cheap one you will regret it.

A low-end juicer won’t have enough power and will get clogged easily and you will end up frustrated with it. Get good quality; a juicer in the $150 to $200 range is usually sufficient. When the Juiceman juicer first came out this was a good, solid machine, capable of handling daily use, and since the late 80’s they have no doubt improved.

Preparing your produce for juicing is probably the most time consuming part of the whole process. Fill your sink with cold water, squeeze half a lemon into the water and add some salt (a couple of tablespoons). Let your produce soak for about ten minutes. There are also some products in the health food stores designed specifically for washing produce should you decide to try that.

One way of dealing with removing the wax from fruits like apples, one source suggests that you dip the fruit or vegetable into boiling water for approximately five seconds. While organic produce is expensive, you might want to get your apples from a natural market where they do not wax produce such as apples or cucumbers.

Now that you have gotten your produce cleaned and chopped into pieces that will fit the mouth of the juicer, you can start creating your juicy concoctions. Different combinations will give you certain results, and there is no rule against mixing fruits and vegetables.

Carrots and apples are always a standard and work well with everything, including each other. To that, you can add a chunk of ginger, or a clove of garlic to help you through a cold. Oranges, cantaloupe, honeydew and watermelon all work well too.

When you juice melons be sure to remove the rind. Cucumbers are also tasty and go with anything. Kale is also a very popular vegetable to juice. It is thick in nutrients, but be careful to balance it out with other produce, as it can easily overpower the other flavors. Kale and Wheat grass juice are both considered “green” juices and can have a very strong taste.

The Benefits of Black Tea

Food and Drink No Comments

Black tea is one of the most popular teas in the world. The English love it and use it as a constant ingredient in many of their breakfast teas. Black tea comes from the same plant that green tea, white, and oolong tea come from. But if you notice, black tea has a distinctively strong flavor and characteristically dark color. How is this so?

Well, you see, the main difference lies in how black tea is processed. While in making green tea, the leaves of the Camellia sinensis plant are first dried and then gently steamed, black tea leaves undergo far more processing steps.

First, the leaves are withered. Then, they are rolled around to release the beneficial polyphenols present in the leaves. Next, the leaves are left out in the open and exposed to heat and humidity to start the fermentation process. After full oxidation or fermentation is done, the leaves are then dried and packed.

All these processing methods actually account for the uniqueness of black tea. The taste may range from brisk to astringent to delicately fruity, flowery, or even smoky. Often, these differences can be ascertained from the growing regions where the tea is produced. But regardless of taste, flavor, and color, the benefits of it remain constant.

For thousands of years, the Chinese (who are attributed to be the first tea drinkers) have been imbibing this drink for its many health benefits. Green tea, especially, with its refreshing delicate taste, is said to help in overcoming certain diseases from the simplest e.g. headaches, stomach pains, etc. to the complex e.g. heart disease, cancer, arthritis, etc.

Scientists believed that the reason green tea is more beneficial compared to other teas is that the leaves never undergo full oxidation. Because of this, the polyphenols, especially the polyphenol ECGG, remain intact and potent against disease-causing free radicals in the human body. However, more recent studies have shown that while its true that full oxidation does break down ECGG, the benefits of black tea are hardly hinged on the present of that chemical compound.

Researchers found that the benefits of black teas are directly associated with certain chemical compounds that give it its characteristic fruity flavor and dark color. These compounds, called theaflavins and theaburigins are polyphenols with antioxidant properties that can help rid the body of harmful free radicals.

In a study done at the American Heart Association in New Orleans, researchers also found that the benefits of black tea may include lowering the risk of heart attack and stroke. According to their findings, certain compounds found in the tea help relax and expand the arteries, thus increasing blood flow to the heart and minimizing clogging of the arteries. The eight-week study on the benefits of black tea involved 50 men and women with coronary artery disease. They drank four cups of either water or tea a day for four weeks. The result was that the group who drank black tea produced more nitric oxide the chemical released by the body that causes the artery to dilate which accounted for their arteries to dilate normally.

Cooking Tofu for Vegans

Food and Drink No Comments

If you are cooking tofu for vegans, it is not difficult, but it is a matter of science just as any other cooking is a science. Including tofu in your diet is a good way to supplement your meals. It acts as a replacement for that which meat would normally provide, as far as essential vitamins and minerals go. Many of the non-meat products that you buy in the grocery store are actually made with tofu; that is how commonplace and important tofu is in many aspects of the Vegan diet.

Is cooking tofu imperative for Vegans? Probably not. Tofu is a soy bean product, and soy beans are packed with protein. Protein is the important part of meat that makes it so imperative in our diet, so replacing meat with tofu in your diet is a great way of keeping the protein and eliminating the dangerous animal fat. The problem with being a vegetarian lies in the dangers of not having enough protein in your diet, but tofu can help to eliminate this as a risk at all if you regularly include it in your diet as you would meat.

Many vegans out there choose not to include tofu in their diets, simply for reasons of taste. Not everybody is going to like everything and let us face it; tofu is not one of the tastiest foods out there, but it can be worked with. Cooking tofu is an art. Tofu can definitely ruin a meal, but not if it is prepared right.

It is often said that when you cook with tofu, it does not maintain a taste of its own, but it does tend to take the taste of the food it is prepared with. For example, if you were to include tofu in a Vegan tofu stir fry, it takes the taste of the noodles and soy sauce in the stir fry; if you include tofu in spaghetti, it would take the taste of the vegetables and/or the marinara sauce.

For Vegans, cooking tofu can be rather intimidating, but it doese not have to be. If you are considering become a Vegan, or just want to learn about cooking tofu for a Vegan you love, there are ways to learn. The internet is chock full of great recipes for tofu-cooking beginners, from the tofu spaghetti and stir-fry that was already discussed to great veggie burgers, hot dogs, and other things.

Cooking tofu for Vegans doese not have to be a chore, and with proper information and a bit of practice, you should not have to live with results that are less than pleasing for very long.

Perhaps we’ve wanted to create a spectacular birthday cake for someone special in our lives, but knew that with the uneven heating in our oven, or the thermostat that seems to have a demon mind of its own, we’d be more likely to produce something only arguably edible instead of spectacular. At times like that, who hasn’t longed for the kind of up-scale kitchen equipment and accessories we know all the top chefs have at their disposal? Finding The Best Culinary Arts School For Further Education

Food and Drink No Comments

Everyone adores your cooking and encourages you to pursue a career using the same. You consider the thought and realize the many splendors of doing what you love to do and getting paid for it. You start planning your future years, and you stumble upon the question: how do you ensure success in the food industry?

A culinary arts school would be your best bet! With the programs they offer, you’d be able to attain enough knowledge for a plethora of possible careers in the industry. These include, but are not limited to, being a professional chef, being a restaurant manager or operator, being a nutritionist, and even being a food writer for some select publications. The idea is a very enticing opportunity. But with the gamut of learning institutions out there, how are you supposed to choose the best one?

Here are some things that you should consider when determining the best culinary arts school for your further education.

Location: Naturally, where the school is located should be paramount among your concerns. A culinary arts school near your place would help you save on transportation expenses, as well as expensive board and lodging. It’s more convenient going to an institution that’s a stone throw’s away from your home, after all.

History: Has the school produced some luminaries in the field? How about their curriculum? Is it loaded with practical and applicable knowledge of what you want to learn? Is it accredited by a competent regulatory agency? How long has it been in existence? These are questions you should be asking to ensure the credibility and reputation of the culinary arts school you’re considering.

Facilities: Cooking is definitely a hands-on subject. Check out the school’s kitchen and see for yourself if it is well-furnished enough for some practical exercises to help the learning process.

Duration of the courses offered: This would depend on what type of program you want to enroll in. There are 4 year programs for more intensive learning. There are 1 to 2 year programs for post-graduate education. And there are shorter term programs for specific lessons you might want to acquaint yourself with. The school you’re considering should offer the subjects you want to learn.

Size of the class: As a general rule, the smaller the class size, the more personal the teaching approach would be. Your concerns would be better met when there are only a few students allowed per class.

Enrollment costs: Naturally, you’d want the culinary arts school to offer a tuition fee that’s within your budget. The rule here is to find a school that charges a reasonable rate, and not a school that charges the lowest rate. The other factors should also be considered. After all, you’ll be getting what you will pay for, so enrollment costs should merely be secondary to the other considerations.

Diet Food Delivery - What To Know Before You Buy

Food and Drink No Comments

So you’ve decided to lose weight the easy way - with a diet food delivery service. Diet delivery is fast becoming one of the most popular ways to lose weight. It’s easy, affordable and convenient. But there are so many services to choose from - which one is best for you?

This article will help you know what to look for when choosing your diet food delivery program so you can choose the best one for your lifestyle.

Key Factors When Choosing A Diet Delivery Service:

- Price

Prices range from $9 to $39.99 a day depending on what level of service and type of program you want.

Higher priced plans are usually gourmet meals, freshly prepared (not frozen) or highly specialized in some way (for example, diabetic-friendly).

Prices also vary based on whether or not you want a full plan (breakfast, lunch and dinner) or just lunch and dinner; and how many days of delivery you want (for example 5 or 7 days). Some meal delivery services quote you price per week or price per month.

Ways To Save - You can often get discounts by ordering by the month versus ordering by the week. Also, you can often get at least one free meal and up to an entire week of meals depending on which diet delivery program you choose.

- Type of Diet Meals

Many services are based on a popular program like the Zone or the Jorge Cruise’s 3 Hour Diet at Home. Others are based on broad meal types like low-carb or diabetic friendly.

Some services will let you choose among different plans like low carb, low calorie, vegetarian or diabetic friendly.

Regardless of diet type, most programs are really based on low calorie, portion controlled meals designed to help you lose approximately 2-3 pounds per week.

- How Many Meals Per Day

In general most diet food delivery services offer you breakfast, lunch and dinner. Some however will only offer lunch and dinner.

Others will offer snacks as an added cost whereas other will offer snacks included. Be sure to factor this into your price comparisons depending on what you want.

- Fresh Vs. Frozen

Some plans offer you fresh food; some offer you frozen food and some offer you both. Frozen meals, in general, are more affordable than fresh.

To many people, frozen vs fresh really doesn’t make a difference. However some people want fresh food made with no preservatives. These services tend to charge a bit more because of the extra work involved.

- Number of Days

While most diet food delivery programs offer a 7 day plan, others also give you the option of a 5 day plan (so you can take the weekend off).

This is a great convenience for those who want their meals delivered to their office during the week. In general you’ll be paying less per week on a 5 day plan, however price per day on these plans is pretty much the same as a 7 day plan.

- Menu Variety

Although it’s hard to get bored with these plans, there are some services that offer better menu variety than others.

For example, one service might offer a 4 week rotating menu. This means the menu changes every 4 weeks.

Other services may let you choose your menu from a larger selection of food allowing you to ensure you’re getting food you love.

Also, if you find you don’t like what’s on the menu, many programs will let you substitute a different meal for a small charge.

- Support

This may not be a feature that you need, however some people do like extra support while losing weight. You might get access to weight loss tools like chat rooms, e-mail support, message boards, dietitian advice, free articles etc.

If weight loss support is important to you, make sure you check out the options before you choose your diet food delivery service.

- Commitment

Some plans do require you to sign a contract for a certain length of time. The most popular time commitment is 1 month which really isn’t asking a lot. After a month you’ll know for sure if the program is right for you.

If a service asks you for a longer commitment than that, be cautious. Some services don’t require you to order 1 month at a time however you’ll probably get a discount if you do.

Conclusion:

Now you know the main features to consider when choosing a diet food delivery service. When you consider these features in light of your preferences and lifestyle, it shouldn’t be hard to decide on the best service for you!

How To Make A Food Lover’s Gift Basket

Food and Drink No Comments

Gift baskets are always popular and a great idea to give as a gift. People love to receive gift baskets. Making your own food lover’s gift basket is cheap and easy.

You can fill with a variety of inexpensive items and you have lots of choices. You can easily customize each basket to your recipient.

I’ve put together a few great ideas for making food lover’s gift baskets, complete with instructions on how to make them. You can make inexpensive gift baskets or expensive gift baskets depending on your budget.

You can find many inexpensive items for use in making your gift baskets or filling your gift baskets at ‘dollar’ stores, craft stores, party stores, discount outlets, flea markets, close-out stores, etc.

For gift containers you can use: any type of basket, wicker basket, straw basket, bucket, laundry basket, plastic container, toy dump truck or other large toy truck, purse, tin, Christmas tin, seasonal container, large tea pot, large upside-down hat, or plastic storage container-put lid underneath.

Other items might be: extra-large coffee mug, boot, potted plant holder, wire basket, large pasta bowl, large popcorn bowl, cooking pot, clay pot, tackle box, colander, small wagon, skillet, antique trunk, champagne bucket, hamper, Asian-style trunk or picnic basket.

For gift basket liner you can use: tissue paper, shredded paper, shredded newspaper, tea towels, dish towels, hand towels, kitchen towels, colored towels, colored napkins, placemats, diapers, baby blankets or fabric pieces.

For gift basket filler you can use: shredded colored paper, straw, Easter basket grass, crumpled newspaper comics, a bed of wrapped chocolates or other wrapped candy.

For items in the container it’ll depend on the specialty or theme of the gift basket. In this case, for a food lover. Here is a small random sampling to give you just a few ideas:

Flavored teas, green tea, specialty tea, herbal tea, biscotti, tea infuser, small tools, kitchen gadgets, healthy snacks, fancy chocolates, boxed chocolates, chocolate bars, hot chocolate mix, specialty coffee mix, or a handwritten food related poem.

Homemade cookies, homemade brownies, homemade jams, popcorn, caramel corn, giant-size boxed candy, candy canes, suckers, lollipops, apple, pear, orange, persimmon, mango, papaya, chips, pretzels, nuts, coffee mug, gourmet pasta, or gourmet olive oil.

Cooking tools, cooking gadgets, measuring spoons, pre-packaged food items, pancake mixes, brownie mixes, cookie mixes, wooden spoons, your best chocolate chip cookie recipe, Italian recipes, Mexican food recipes or other ethnic recipes, birthday poems, or cinnamon sticks.

For gift basket wrapping you can use tulle netting or I like to use cellophane wrap. You can buy it in large rolls. Look for specialty packaging outlets where you can buy it wholesale. Tie off the wrapped basket with ribbon. Wired fabric ribbon is best if you have it.

For bows: You can use pre-packaged bows but making your own bows is easy and the best if you can do it. Use a large or huge bow.

Assemble all your gift basket items, tools, etc. Now line your selected gift container. Now stuff the selected filler into the gift basket to give added height to your items. Place, layer and arrange your selected items on the filler in the gift container. Put the larger items in the back, the smaller items in front.

Fill in the holes or prop up with more filler (shredded paper, Easter basket grass, wrapped chocolates, napkins or holiday napkins etc.)

Also you can use ‘picks’ of artificial flowers to fill in space. Place your cellophane or other wrap under the gift basket. Center the gift basket on the wrap. Bring the cellophane or other wrap over the top of the gift basket and tie it with ribbon and or a beautiful bow! Use ribbon and bows to match your theme colors.

Tuck a card in the ribbon and that’s it!

You can find fabric or wired ribbon cheaply at Costco– especially in the fall prior to Christmas but often throughout the year in some stores. You can shred paper in a paper shredder. If you’re going to need a lot of cellophane you can purchase it wholesale through the packaging specialty stores throughout the U.S. but should be easily found in craft stores.

General tips: Try to use non-perishable items except for fruit for fruit baskets. Use freshly packaged food items, because even packaged crackers and cookies can go stale in a couple of months.

You can find filler flower ‘picks’ at garage sales for pennies. If you buy wholesale they are usually around a dollar each. Try not to mix chocolate or other food fragrant items with non-food fragrant items in the same basket.

Also there’s nothing like learning how to make gift baskets from a video or DVD for making cheap and easy gift baskets. You can view it over and over again and share with your children, other family members and friends.

You can even charge for classes with your new-found knowledge and/or start a home based business if you so desire. In any event, making a food lover’s gift basket is cheap and easy.

Secrets Of A Barbecue Grill

Food and Drink No Comments

Everyone who has a backyard or even an outside patio probably owns a barbecue grill. The grill is as important as anything else lying around the house. Most men consider the grill and the area surrounding it “man land.” Cooking meat on an open flame satisfies the caveman part of the brain.

The smell of the meat on hot coals will make anyone hungry. A barbecue grill comes in many shapes and sizes. Small grills that can be placed on a table can cost very little and they work just the same as the big ones.

On the other end of the spectrum, one can find large stainless steel models that cost, in some cases, over two thousand dollars. When it comes down to the basics, a barbecue grill cooks meat. Everything else that is built into one is either a cooking aid or nice to have accessories. Some grills also come attached with smoker accessories so the unit can accomplish more than just grilling.

Whatever the customer wants, there is probably a grill that suits his or her taste. Something to consider when shopping for a grill is: What size does one want or need? Meat racks can be small, maybe enough to cook two steaks, or large enough to cook for a large party.

Tips To Aid The Cooking Of Meat

It doesn’t matter what kind of meat one is cooking. Whether its beef, pork, fish, or chicken, there are some things that can enhance the flavors. One way is to marinate the meat overnight in whatever one chooses. When it is taken out to the barbecue grill, the aroma is mouth watering.

Also, one can use spices while the meat is cooking. There are many spices available to the customer. Some even mix spices together designed for each type of meat.

Something else that will aid the cooking is to watch out for flare ups. They can very quickly ruin a nice cut of meat. Every barbecue grill has a lid. When cooking meat that drips often, keeping the lid closed while cooking will stop the flare up. One still has to keep an eye out for trouble, but with the barbecue grill lid down, flare ups are minimized. Finally, knowing the amount of time it takes to cook a specific type and size of meat, the individual can then cook the meat to whatever one likes.

All meat will taste bad if overcooked so have a rough idea of the time it takes to cook whatever meat one is having, and keep a knife handy to check the current condition of the meat.

Yogurt Yeast Infection

Food and Drink No Comments

Although it is not the cure for the common cold, many people certainly hail the benefits of this remedy as being heaven sent. As a relief from the burning, itching, rash, and vaginal discharge, yogurt yeast infections remedies are the number one thing on many people’s minds.

It can be messy, it can drip, and it can feel downright silly and maybe even naughty to be doing this, but to the tens of thousands of yeast infections sufferers yogurt it is the one thing that can stop them from going over the edge.

There are of course other remedies that will work on yeast infections, and raw garlic clove suppositories is one of them, but most people will first try their hand at one of the methods of the yogurt yeast infections cure.

As was mentioned it can prove to be a messy business, so if you are a woman suffering from a yeast infection then you might want to think about wearing a pad to ward off incipient messiness.

For a man suffering from yeast infections the best advice that comes to mind is to try this remedy when you are at home, and where it will not be commented upon if you have a large wet patch on the front of your trousers!

The first choice of many sufferers using the yogurt yeast infections remedy is to go it direct. This entails you applying the unsweetened yogurt to the infected area. For a man, lather your penis lavishly with yogurt, and for a woman, you need to coat the vaginal walls with the yogurt.

This yogurt yeast infections remedy can be done in many ways. The first of which is to use a plastic speculum to open the vagina whereupon you can coat the vaginal walls.

Another method is to use a tampon. All you need to do is to coat a tampon in the unsweetened yogurt and insert into the vagina. This takes care of the whole situation most effectively.

You also have the option of freezing yogurt in disposable gloves, thereby creating yogurt fingers or frozen yogurt tampons. The first time that you insert one of these frozen yogurt yeast infections remedies into your vagina, it is admittedly a bit of a shock, but on the whole it is very soothing.

Of course if these messy methods of yogurt yeast infections remedies do not appeal to you, you can always just do away with it and have your yogurt in pill form. These come in the guise of lactobacillus acidophilus tablets as this is the main ingredient in the yogurt yeast infections cure which helps to fight against yeast producing bacteria.

Reasons for Choosing a Vegetarian Diet

Food and Drink No Comments

Let us start with a brief background on some the reasons people have chosen a vegetarian diet in our history:

The idea of vegetarianism is not a new one, by any stretch of the imagination. Indeed man has in one way or another eaten vegetarian diets since his beginnings. Granted, the first vegetarians did so only out necessity. Meat may not have been available due to harsh winters, animal migrational patterns or even poor tribal leadership. Only foraged food would have been available under such circumstances.

As man evolved and became more able to manipulate his environment, so came the option to choose. Available facts point to the first vegetarian ideologies being practiced in Egypt around 3,200BC where some religious groups abstained from eating flesh, as they believed it produced bad karma with regards to their reincarnation.

Around 2000BC Hindus, on the Indian sub-continent, began practising vegetarianism in the belief that a vegetarian diet is needed to reach spiritual enlightenment. Even today, Hindus make up the largest percentage of vegetarians on the Earth.

Also from the Indian sub-continent, around 600BC, came the religion of Jainism. In its teachings, Jainism insists that we honor the spiritual nature of all life. Extemely dedicated Jainists go to the extent of straining insects from drinking water and even wearing masks to avoid inhaling small, airborne creatures. They will only eat fruits that have natually fallen from trees and are not supposed to eat honey or rooted plants.
Janism is the only religion requiring their monks to be vegetarian.

Vegetarianism was also popularised in Ancient Greece by many of the great philosophers including Plato, Socrates, and Aristotle. Indeed vegetarians in Europe were originally referred to as Pythagoreans, after the Greek Philosopher Pythagoras advocated a vegetarian diet for its nutritional and ethical values. He claimed,

“As long as Man continues to be the ruthless destroyer of lower living beings he will never know health or peace. For as long as men massacre animals, they will kill each other. Indeed, he who sows the seed of murder and pain cannot reap joy and love.”

It was not until 1847, when the first vegetarian society was formed in Ramsgate, Kent UK, that the name Vegetarian was first conceived. Contrary to popular belief, the word Vegetarian arose from the Latin word `vegetus`, meaning `lively` which was how early vegetarians claimed their diet made them feel.

Many reason have been voiced in favour of vegetarianism in our history including the long held philosophy that vegetarians are living longer, healthier lives than their meat eating counter-parts. Much evidence has already been accumulated to support these claims.

Now let us look at some of the reasons that justify becoming vegetarian in our modern society.

Necessity
The case of necessity speaks for itself really; anyone unable to find a supply of meat sufficient to sustain life must find an alternative until such time that meat becomes available again.

Economic
An Economic Vegetarian is someone who practices vegetarianism either out of necessity, lack of funds for instance, or because of a conscious or philosophical viewpoint that the consumption of meat is economically unsound and that vegetarianism will help improve public health and curb many starvation issues.

Environmental
Environmental Vegetarians are similar to Economic Vegetarians. According to the United Nations, the livestock sector (cows, chickens, pigs, etc) is one of the three most significant contributors to our most serious environmental problems, at every scale from local to global. It is one of the largest sources of greenhouse gases. The use of feedlots, for cattle feeding, is one of the most inefficient and environmentally harmful ways of producing meat; yet they still remain widespread throughout cattle farming.

Religion
Many religions support vegetarianism including Buddhism, Hinduism, Jainism and Taoism. They offer similar teachings which stress the value of all life and forbids the act of destroying life simply for human gains.

Distaste
Some people genuinely do not enjoy the taste of meat, suggesting it tastes sweaty or fatty. Others choose to be vegetarian because they find meat products aesthetically unappetizing. An example being, the carcass of a herd animal lying in a field would attract real carnivores such as big cats or wolves, but the mere sight would disgust most humans.

Animal Welfare
Many vegetarians, especially western vegetarians, are motivated by animal welfare. They see animals as our friends, with whom we share the world and not as mere food. The fact that most parents actively encourage their children to love and appreciate animals is totally contradictory to the way in which humans really respect and treat animals.

Personal Health
Possibly the single most reason more and more people are turning to vegetarianism, current studies are showing that vegetarians are living longer and healthier. A study by the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition in 1999 found that the mortality ratio in fish eaters was lowest (0.82) then followed by vegetarians (0.84) occasional meat eaters also at (0.84) compared to regular meat eaters at (1.0).
A recent study shown in the British Medical Journal concluded that,

“Higher IQ at age 10 years was associated with an increased likelihood of being vegetarian at age 30…IQ remained a statistically significant predictor of being vegetarian as an adult…”

Conscience
Conscience is a conglomeration of all the other reasons. It is our moral conscience, which allows us to weigh up what we see, hear and know. It is our choice whether we allow it to influence out daily life. Those who are able to suppress their consciousness, deliberately or otherwise, will ultimately make a decision that will not favour the miss-fortunes of animals.

I hope, that in some way, this article will encourage people to explore vegetarianism as a real option. Whatever reasons for becoming vegetarian, one thing is not in doubt; vegetarianism is here to stay and it looks likely to become the preferred diet of choice for all humans in the not too distant future.

How to Make A Cheap and Easy Chocolate Lover’s Gift Basket

Food and Drink No Comments

Gift baskets will always be popular and a great idea to give as a gift. People love to receive gift baskets. Making your own chocolate lover’s gift basket is cheap and easy.

You can fill it with a variety of inexpensive items and there are lots of choices.ou can easily customize each chocolate theme gift basket to your recipient.

I’ve put together a few great ideas for making a chocolate lover’s gift basket, complete with instructions on how to make them. You can make inexpensive gift baskets or expensive gift baskets depending on your budget.

First make a list of your recipient’s hobbies and interests. List everything you can think of.

Suggestions: sports, books, television shows, in-house hobbies, outdoor recreation, camping, workshop, enjoy working with tools, golf, fishing, computer-related, environment friendly, golf, and tennis.

Also relaxation, food, wine, spa, bath and body, fruit, cookie, crafts, gardening, etc. You can tie in any interests into your chocolate theme. These are just a few ideas.

You can find many inexpensive items for use in making your gift baskets or filling your gift baskets, at ‘dollar’ stores, craft stores, party stores, discount outlets, flea markets, close-out stores, etc.

For gift containers you can use: any type of basket, wicker basket, straw basket, bucket, laundry basket, plastic container, toy dump truck or other large toy truck, purse, tin, Christmas tin, seasonal container, large tea pot, large upside-down hat, or plastic storage container-put lid underneath.

Other items might be: extra-large coffee mug, boot, potted plant holder, wire basket, large pasta bowl, large popcorn bowl, cooking pot, clay pot, tackle box, colander, small wagon, skillet, antique trunk, champagne bucket, hamper, Asian-style trunk or picnic basket.

For gift basket liner you can use: tissue paper, shredded paper, shredded newspaper, tea towels, dish towels, hand towels, kitchen towels, colored towels, colored napkins, placemats, diapers, baby blankets or fabric pieces.

For gift basket filler you can use: shredded colored paper, straw, Easter basket grass, crumpled newspaper comics, a bed of wrapped chocolates or other wrapped candy.

For items in the container it’ll depend on the specialty or theme of the gift basket - in this case Chocolate! With chocolate it’s best not to include any fragrant items, unless they are wrapped in such a way that they don’t give off any fragrance. Here’s a small random sampling to give you some good ideas:

Gift certificate for massage or spa visit, gift certificate to favorite store, gift certificate for restaurant, loofah, CD of nature sounds, favorite artist CD, DVD of newer release movie, how-to video or CD, handwritten poem, watch, framed photo, inspirational book, spa pillows, bath pillows, spa supplies, or a small fluffy towel.

Also flavored teas, green tea, specialty tea, herbal tea, biscotti, tea infuser, healthy snacks, fancy chocolates, boxed chocolates, chocolate bars, hot chocolate mix, specialty coffee mix, homemade chocolate chip cookies, homemade brownies, chocolate fudge, and Ghirardelli chocolates.

Or chocolate covered raisins, chocolate covered strawberries, Hershey chocolates, dark chocolates, white chocolates, chocolate bars, chocolate covered cherries, Belgian chocolates, chocolate mints, and chocolate covered pretzels.

How about miniature or giant-size chocolate animals, gourmet chocolate candies, Tootsie Rolls, nuts, homemade chocolate-based cookies, pre-packaged chocolate food items, brownie mixes, and chocolate chip cookie mixes.

And wooden spoons, your best chocolate chip cookie recipe, your favorite hand-written chocolate recipes, chocolate dessert recipes, chocolate fudge recipes, hot chocolate or cocoa mixes in fancy packets, coffee mug for cocoa, movie tickets and cinnamon sticks.

You can use as many chocolate items as you like. You can make your basket with all chocolate items or mix in a few non-chocolate items.

Assemble all your gift basket items, tools you need, etc. Now line your selected gift container. Now stuff the selected filler into the gift basket to give added height to your items. Place, layer and arrange your selected items on the filler in the gift container. Put the larger items in the back, the smaller items in front.

Fill in the holes or prop up with more filler (shredded paper, Easter basket grass, wrapped chocolates, napkins or holiday napkins etc.

General tips: Try to use non-perishable items. Use freshly packaged food items, because even packaged crackers and cookies can go stale in a couple of months. You can find filler flower ‘picks’ at garage sales for pennies. If you buy wholesale they are usually around a dollar each.

Also there’s nothing like learning how to make gift baskets from a video or DVD for making cheap and easy gift baskets. You can view it over and over again and share with your children, other family members and friends.

You can even charge for classes with your new-found knowledge and/or start a home based business if you so desire. In any event, making a chocolate lover’s gift basket is cheap and easy and will be thoroughly appreciated by the chocolate lover recipient.

Cooking With Lamb

Food and Drink No Comments

We all know and have read about the health benefits of eating a varied diet, consisting of a selection of one product out of the 5 main food groups. (Fruit & Vegetables, Meat & Fish, Dairy Products and Milk, Bread cereal and potatoes, and fatty and sugary foods) When it comes to choosing a meat product Lamb is one of the most flavorsome of all the meats.

With lamb you have a varied choice of cuts i.e. Breast, Leg, Shank, Shoulder, Loin, Chump Fillet Scrag and of course Minced Lamb.

When people think of a joint of lamb they tend to think of roast lamb and mint sauce, whilst this is truly delicious there are so many other recipes that you can choose using different cuts of Lamb.

If you have the opportunity to buy a whole lamb from a local farmer so much the better, the flavor of the meat and the tenderness is so much better than the lamb that we tend to get in the supermarkets.

You also have the benefit of knowing that the Lamb has been reared on a local farm and hopefully has been well looked after. If you do have to buy lamb from the supermarket then make sure that you but the leanest cuts with firm creamy-white fat.

A lot of recipes that we tend to use beef mince for are in fact so much better if you use lamb, how can you make Moussaka with beef, and all curries are so much better made with lamb try it for yourself and you will see the difference.

Because lambs are young when they go to slaughter the meat is always tender, ever heard of a tough bit of lamb, I very much doubt it. If you can get it the neck fillet is one of my favorite cuts and you can do absolutely anything with it that you like.

Cut it into large chunks and roll in some spices and fry quickly in a frying pan and it’s meltingly soft and so full of flavor. Mince it up and make Moussaka or Shepherds pie I bet you notice the difference from beef. Cube it for all your curries.

All the joints can be roasted, make some slits in the skin with a sharp knife and place some slivers of Garlic in each slice with some thyme or rosemary it gives the meat a most wonderful smell.

There are so many things that can be done with such a succulent piece of meat. If you are stuck for ideas or have never cooked lamb before try looking for some recipes online, or try cooking it on its own and when your confidence grows start to add things to the meat.

A Fine Kettle Of Fish!

Food and Drink No Comments

Every year I take up my soup spoon, adjust my bib and continue my search for the best tasting seafood gumbo I can find. It’s not an easy job, but I’m up to the task again this year. You can find it just about anywhere you can smell the salt in the air. My choice is the gulf coast from Alabama all the way to Texas.

I’ve tasted gumbo made with shrimp, (head on or head off) chicken, sausage, fish, scallops, clams, oysters and crab meat. Heads on shrimp give the gumbo a stronger and more flavorful taste. Added to these ingredients are vegetable such as onions, bell pepper, okra, parsley, celery, garlic and tomatoes.

In addition to all this, there are spices such as bay leaves, garlic, thyme, salt, ground black pepper, cayenne pepper, file’ powder, Creole seasoning, chicken bouillon, Worcestershire Sauce, Old Bay Seasoning, Cavender’s Greek Seasoning, Crab Boil and ketchup. Some chefs leave out the chicken and pork.

From what I’ve seen and sampled along the coast, I’ve discovered that there is no such thing as a standard gumbo recipe. Some sea side chefs make theirs with chicken. Others cooks would have to be threatened bodily harm to put a bird in their soup, using Scallops instead. On the New Orleans side of the coast, many put sausage in theirs, but not just any sausage. It seems that each chef uses a particular brand and wouldn’t dream of using anything else!

If there is one thing that all gumbos have in common, it’s that they all must have a roux. This pronounced roo and they all seem to be pretty much alike; made with flour and oil, vegetable shortening, lard or bacon drippings. Some say to cook the mixture until its copper colored and some like to see it a lighter shade. Whatever color, the roux’ is the one staple in a perfect gumbo, giving it a texture. Without it the fish, scallops or shrimp would simply be swimming in hot water.

No two gumbos taste alike, even when its made by the same cook. While I was in Pensacola, Florida I found a seafood grill close to Orange Beach, Ala that had a wonderful spicy seafood gumbo that smelled so good your mouth began watering as you walked into the room. My nose wasn’t wrong! The gumbo was out of this world. After a huge bowl I was stuffed! I left the place vowing to come back soon.

After fishing most of the next day, I had to make a trip back to the gumbo grill I had visited the day before. Knowing that anticipation is half the fun of most awaited events, I was anxiously awaiting lunch at the gumbo grill. The server came out of the kitchen with my bowl of gumbo and I didn’t even wait for my stew to cool before I dug in with my spoon.

My taste buds are not dumb; they instantly knew that something was amiss! This was not the same taste as the day before! I immediately asked for the chef, whom I had met the day before and congratulated him on a wonderful dish, so he was waiting for more applause as he approached me.

“What happened?” I cried. “This is not the same taste as yesterday!”

“I made it the same way.” he said somewhat defensively.

“Are you sure it’s the same recipe?” I asked.

“What recipe?” he asked as he looked at me like I was nuts!

He assured that since he had been making seafood gumbo everyday for the last several years, he always made it the same way. He admitted he could have used a little more of this and a little less of that. Whatever it was, the gumbo wasn’t the same.

He confided in me that this method of preparing seafood gumbo was the way most of the restaurants up and down the coast did it. He didn’t know anyone who wrote down the recipe since most of the other cooks had been making the stew the same way for years. The gumbo wasn’t the same as before but it was still good!

I have given up trying to make gumbo myself, because none of my tasted edible. If you want to try it yourself, search on the internet for seafood gumbo recipes. You’ll find more than you could copy in a lifetime. Do as I do and just make it an important part of your next ocean side vacation and search for the perfect gumbo!

Barbeque Maintenance Tips

Food and Drink No Comments

When purchasing your barbeque grill, think of it as an investment rather then just another item for your outdoor entertainment. You should expect this item to become a large part of your outdoor activities for many years to come. But like any other investments, proper maintenance and care is needed to ensure that your barbeque grill will work for you for many years to come.

While some maintenance and cleaning is specific to the type of barbeque grill your own (gas, electric, charcoal or smoke barbecue grill), the majority of maintenance that should be carried on does not change from grill to grill.

Step 1- Gathering The Necessary Items

You will need some common household items on hand when it comes time to clean your barbeque grill.

Brass wire grill brush
Steel wool pads, preferably that contains soap already.
Mild dish soap
Sponge or dishcloth
Spray cooking oil
Dry baking soda
Aluminum foil

Step 2- Brushing Your Grill Off

The first thing that should always be done to your grill is a routine brushing. Using your brass wire grill brush (or other brush suitable to your type of grill) you should brush off all the surfaces. By routinely brushing your barbeque grill, you will prevent any type of buildup. If buildup from food is left to long, it can become increasingly difficult to remove.

Step 3- Spray Cooking Oil

Once you are sure that your grill is free of all buildup and debris, and that your grill is completely cooled off, you will want to spray it down with a light layer of cooking oil. Spraying it down with cooking oil will prevent your barbeque grill from rusting. It is especially important to make sure your barbeque grill is completely cold, as spraying cooking oil on a hot surface may cause the oil to heat up and ignite, which could be potentially dangerous to you and your barbeque grill.

Step 4- Use Baking Soda and Aluminum Foil on Your Grill

Baking soda is a very nice cleaning and polishing agent. Once you have removed any extra debris and buildup, lightly scrubbing your barbeque grill with baking soda will give it that extra shine, similar to the day that you brought it home from the store. This can also be used on handles and knobs to remove any extra buildup that cannot be taken off with a wire brush.

Aluminum foil can also be used to keep your grill looking nice. Gently rub the aluminum foil on your grill, and you will notice that it removes grim and buildup.

Step 5- Clean Your Racks

The racks in your grill are especially important as this is where the food touches when it is cooking. You will have to use the wire brush to remove as much buildup as possible. Once you remove as much as possible, start washing the racks with dish soap. If the racks are really dirty, you may also want to use the steel wool pads. Be sure to completely rinse off all soap and residue before cooking on these racks again.

Step 6- Preventing Problems

The majority of problems that arise from barbeque grills comes from lack of cleaning and maintenance. That means if you notice something does not seem quite right with your barbeque grill, chances are it can be fixed with just a simple cleaning. Even if you clean it, and still find that it is having problems, at least you saved yourself the potential embarrassment of taking it to a professional only to find out all it needed was to be cleaned.

Finally, one method of preventing problems with your barbeque grill is protecting it from the outdoors. Covers are available for grills in all shapes and sizes, so chances are, you will find one that fits your grill. If you have a cover for your barbeque grill, then all you will ever need to do is do the regular maintenance listed above.

Decorating A Cake With Scenery

Food and Drink No Comments

One of the terrific ways to decorate a cake is with scenery. This can be achieved systematically as will be shown. The cake is first iced in a thin layer of buttercream and then poured with a lukewarm fondant. Before painting the scene, the cake should dry for one hour. Scenery painting in icings can be practiced on corrugated cardboard circles before attempting an actual cake scene.

A thinned down boiled icing and vegetable paste colors are used for this type of painted cake top. In painting a scene such as the boat, clouds and land in background, a picture may be obtained and copied in the following manner:

With a brush approximately 11/2 inches in diameter, a small amount of thinned down boiled icing is placed in the skyline area. Using the brush in a back and forth motion, the skyline is painted in.

With a tiny brush, place four or five small dots of blue paste color in the skyline area. Using a larger brush in a series of back and forth motions gives the skyline a blue variegated effect.

A large cone of white boiled icing with a 1/4 inch opening at the tip is used in a zig-zag motion at various intervals to obtain the cloud effect. Go over this cloud area with a clean brush to give it a smooth realistic look.

The water area is made by piping on a thinned down white boiled icing and then adding a few drops of blue and green paste color. Then, with the use of the large brush in a series of sweeping motions, create the greenish blue water effect. Use the deeper colors for the distant water. The ship may be put in with the fill-in method or it may be outlined and then painted on with the brush as illustrated.

Before putting in the clouds and after the blue is put on, a few dots of yellow, orange and a tint of violet may be brushed right above the horizon to give a sunset effect. After practicing a few simple scenes such as these, you will see that scenery painting is simple and fast once you have acquired the technique of using the brush properly.

For a Western scene, the sky can be painted in first as previously described. The mountains can then be piped on with a white and brown icing. Then, using a small brush, a few dots of deep colored icing can be put on the crevices and then smoothed nut with a larger brush. The cowboy and horse can be painted on with a very small brush in deeper colored boiled icing thinned down to the consistency of oil paints.

A Halloween scene can be painted in chocolate, orange and yellow. In a scene such as that, you must keep in mind the angle of the moon’s shadows. This cake can be bordered with individual shells using the No. 30 star tube and was overpiped in a deep color with a No. 3 tube using a question mark design.

Fine Gourmet Flavored Coffee Beans Are A Wonderful Treat

Coffee No Comments

People always want something that is a little better or possibly just something a little different. This is certainly true when it comes to our coffee. Even if you like your java straight and black there is something to be said for a slight change in your coffee once in a while. Gourmet flavored coffee beans will fill this need with a more robust and different flavor.

There are a few unique reasons gourmet coffee is way ahead of the many supermarket varieties of java. The coffee bean is the one of the most important things you can factor into coffee making. Lots of people think that the location the coffee bean was raised in has a lot to do with the taste of the coffee. A different opinion states that the r
