Mediterranean Lifestyle May Contribute To Longer Life

Wellness No Comments

The Mediterranean island of Menorca was the life-long home of one of the oldest people in the world. The man who passed away recently at 114 years of age advised regular physical activity, a mild climate and a healthy, Mediterranean diet.

The man and his family tended a family orchard. He was still cycling to the orchard to work until he reached the age of 102. Professor Adolfo Diez Perez at the Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona, who led the research team that studied the bone mass and genetics of the man, tends to agree.

The research team studied the man when he was 113 years old. Recently published in the Journal of Gerontology, the findings state, “his bone mass was normal, there were no anomalous curvatures and he had never sustained a fracture.” The study included other members of his family. His 101-year-old brother, 81- and 77-year-old daughters and his 85-year-old nephew participated in the study. Each of the five participants were born and raised in a small village on the island of Menorca.

The KLOTHO gene is one of the genes responsible for proper levels of mineral density in healthy bones. The LRP5 gene is one of the genes responsible for longevity. Research did not indicate any mutations of these two commonly researched genes. Professor Perez’s research does not conclude that the mutation of other genes could have positively affected longevity.

Rest and Relaxation

Before Menorca became the booming tourist location it is today, it was a peaceful, quiet place to relax. In the 1950s and 1960s, doctors throughout the U.K. would often prescribe an island holiday to patients whose primary symptoms were brought on by stress.

In most cases, a week of stress-free island sunshine was quite literally just what the doctor ordered. It is believed that this type of stress-free lifestyle could lead to a longer life. Studies like the one mentioned earlier help give credit to the popular belief.

Millions of tourists visit Menorca each year in search of the perfect beach getaway. With the introduction of mass tourism in the 1970s came additional requirements for the Balearic Islands.

The influx of tourists meant more hotels and resorts had to be constructed. Tourism is now the primary source of fuel for the Menorcan economy. Today’s tourism is much different in comparison to 1950s tourism. Tourism today is much faster paced. Tourist shops, busy cafes and a wide variety of restaurants now accompany the once quiet hotels.

Physical Activity

Fitness experts always list the two most important “must-haves” of weight loss and a healthy life as diet and exercise. Of the five individuals studied, all live or lived an active lifestyle. They live in a small village in Menorca and work in the family orchard.

Exercise doesn’t necessarily mean following a rigorous daily routine to help keep the body moving and healthy. Walking around the corner to the cafe for a light lunch is more beneficial than driving to the nearest fast food restaurant.

Taking the stairs instead of the elevator can help burn the extra calories from the soda or unhealthy snack everyone is guilty of having from time to time. Even the addition of a small amount of physical activity can make a big difference in the way we look and feel.

Mediterranean Diet

The Mediterranean diet is rich in fruits, vegetables, bread, potatoes, beans, nuts and seeds. Little-to-no red meat is eaten, while eggs, fish and poultry are eaten in low to moderate amounts.

Olive oil is very important to the Mediterranean diet as a monounsaturated fat source. Wines, often created on the island, are consumed in low to moderate amounts. The Mediterranean diet is lower in saturated fats than the typical American diet.

Tips for Doing a Safe Home Body Detox

Wellness No Comments

If you are like most people, you have probably read in more than a few places that detoxification of the body can do wonders for a variety of medical conditions and if you have checked into you have probably found that there are a variety of elements that make doing a home body detox less than appealing. In fact, most home body detox program outlines sound down right unpleasant, painful and often times leave you feeling incredibly ill for several days. Of course, with an outline like that who is going to want to do it on a regular basis, there are other ways however, to detox the body and do it in such a way that you only feel how much better you feel and you are not dealing with the harmful and often painful side effects.

This is not to say that you will feel no discomfort. You probably will feel some as your body starts to release the toxins that you have had built up within the body. It will not however be as bad as the detoxification programs that you read about that involve taking diuretics and purgatives and fasting.

There are however safe home body detox programs that can provide you with the benefits of detoxification with only minimal discomfort. This is a longer program than what most people think of as a detox. Most people think of the weekend detox program or the ones that last only a week. Studies have shown however that detoxification of the body in order for it to be complete takes a total of 3 months and involves significantly more than doing the harsh purge detox programs that currently hold popularity.

A home body detox program should take 28 days. It should be done in such a way that symptoms from the detoxification are kept to a minimum. After all, who is going to want to maintain a diet and program to cleanse the body if it makes you feel worse than before you started.

Do not just jump right into a home body detox program. Due to the high levels of processed foods, carbohydrates and caffeine that most people intake jumping right in can cause serious side effects as you go through withdrawal from these substances. It is best if you start several weeks earlier and begin lowering your intake of these substances until you no longer crave them. This will make it easier for your body to handle the home body detox program safely. It also makes the side effects of a home body detox program significantly milder making it easier to maintain and easier to live life even while you are going through the detoxification process.

There are some other things to consider as well to make sure that your home body detox program is both successful and contains the least amount of issues when it comes to side effects. Remember to drink plenty of water when you are on a home body detox program. Even the mildest of home body detox programs are going to be hard on the body.

By drinking plenty of water during a home body detox plan, you can avoid the side effects such as headaches and many times muscle aches and pains.

How To Find Your Life Purpose Now

Wellness No Comments

Happily fulfilling one’s life purpose brings immense happiness, which in turn leads to robust health and physical wellbeing.

Does your life’s purpose seem to be eluding you? Not sure what your “Life Purpose” is? Well, you have just found it!

You may be saying to yourself right now: “Yeah, right! How can that be? I’ve been searching for my life purpose all this time and here’s this crazy loony telling me I just found it!”–Fair enough. Let me explain.

The thing about our life’s purpose is that we tend to overcomplicate it. We think that if it is not mystical and amazing, it can’t possibly be it. However, I’d like to pose a question to you. What do you think is the purpose of your life?

If we ‘zero base’ it, which simply means make it very plain and simple-deep down inside, you feel happiest when you are living in unison with the natural laws of the universe (pure physics, mind you). The natural laws, one of which is the law of service illustrates the point well. The grand aim for us in this life is spiritual progression (even if at first we don’t recognize it).

The way we go about it in our day to day is also simple. In order to continue the experience we need to keep ourselves alive. In order for that to happen we need to work to feed ourselves and being on purpose whilst we do that means being happy whilst adding value and solving other people’s ‘urgent problems’.

Whether you clean houses for a living or run multi-national corporations you are on purpose when each day you are happy and can’t wait to start your day because it is another opportunity to positively touch someone else’s life in a positive way–adding value to them.

You see the creator of all life inscribed in each one of us a very simple program: “become better than you are, whilst helping your neighbour do the same!” It is within our daily activities that we find the opportunity and the lessons necessary to act out that program. These very opportunities help us make the necessary attitude choices in order to gain the most out of our learning: The purpose of this life.

You see our purpose as spiritual beings having a physical experience is to improve ourselves and come closer to perfection. In so doing we help those around us do the same and hence improve the collective consciousness. Making the universe a better place for everyone; and it all starts with one person at a time.

Precessional Effect
Buckminster Fuller explained it best. ‘Precession’, which is different to ‘Procession’ is an inevitable consequential result of our actions. A processional activity is one based on linear action, where the outcome is the result of an intention.

A precessional effect is a side-effect that is often unexpected and usually operates at right-angles to the ‘Processional’ effects (in the way that when a pebble drops into a pond, the resulting ripples on the surface propagate out at right-angles to the direction of the pebble’s travel).

We see precessional side-effects clearly throughout nature. Bees are a good example. The bee needs honey, so it flies from flower to flower, collecting nectar in an intentional and straight forward cause and effect process. However, the precessional side-effect of this activity is such that flowers are pollinated in the process creating all sorts of beautiful and necessary effects in nature.

In His wisdom, the Great Spirit gave bees and humans the need to work to provide for ’self’, knowing that in doing so precession would take care of the rest, thus ensuring his creatures’ purposes are fulfilled daily. The more conscious you become about yourself and the need to add value to other people’s lives the more valuable your precessional impact. This is also how together we can change the world, one person at a time.

Cause and Effect
Precession is the consequential aspect of our activity - the result of our actions. When looking for your life purpose you only need to concern yourself with answering yes to 3 simple questions.

1. Am I adding value and having a meaningfully positive effect on the lives of the people that cross my path?
2. Am truly coming from my heart and do I have other people’s best interests (not just my own) as my priority?
3. Am I honestly happy in this pursuit? Does it make my heart sing?

The precessional effect you have on this world doesn’t require outward material success and recognition although you may certainly desire it and (consequentially) receive it–what it does however require is that you go about the business of your heart, diligently.

Whether or not you answer yes to the questions above fundamentally you are already fulfilling your life’s purpose. However the ideal is for you to be able to answer YES and joyfully fulfill that purpose. However, be sure to be realistic about it, just because you answer yes to the above questions it does not mean you are going to be 100% happy with your activity 100% of the time. The key is to honour yourself and start making changes (first within yourself) that will accommodate a circumstantial change in direction for you.

How do I change course?
Here are a couple of ways to help you get started in joyfully fulfilling your life purpose:

Get really clear
First you need to assess where you are and where you want to be. Get really clear about the simple things in your activities that make you happy in your life and that add value to other people. And start doing more of that, applying leverage wherever possible. There are many processes to help you with this: keeping a diary and writing down your thoughts, meditation, emotional freedom technique and even prayer are some of the ways to gain clarity.

Focus on your strengths
Playing on your strengths is going to be the one thing that will make you happiest and most successful in adding value to yourself and others. Any professional athlete will tell you that they work to bring their weaknesses to competency level, but their greatest focus and diligence is to further develop their strengths!

Listen to your heart
If you hate something–stop doing it. Get educated, get creative and start doing what you love. Life is too short to be miserable. However, take RESPONSIBILITY for your actions and be smart about your change in focus and remember as the great motivator Zig Ziglar says “You can have everything in life you want as long as you will help enough other people get what they want!”

Face your fears
Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote: “There’s nothing capricious in nature, and the implanting of a desire indicates that its gratification is in the constitution of the creature that feels it”. In short you wouldn’t have a desire unless you were capable of its achievement. Believe in yourself and break through your fears.

Persist
One thing about life is that your commitment will be consistently and sometimes seemingly, aggressively tested. Be ready for this. Just because you are ‘on purpose’ does not mean it is going to be easy all of the time - we have a lot to learn! Too many say they ‘want’ and they ‘will’, but too few ‘get’ and ‘do’–not because they can’t but because they DESIST–too often just when they are about to get the desired result.

Don’t let that happen to you, believe in yourself. Replace negative thoughts with a new mantra: “No matter how bad it is or how hard it gets, I AM GOING TO MAKE IT!”

Choose to be extraordinary–the seed is already in you!

Relationship Between Diet And Sleep

Wellness No Comments

You should know that your diet will have great influence on your weight, as well as your health. However, one thing you may not know is that some food may help aid your sleep. Of course there are also food that may make your more difficult to fall asleep. As a result, you should be very care what you eat.

In most cases, fresh fruits and green leafy vegetables can help you to sleep. In fact, other foods such as whole grain breads may also aid your sleep. In this article, we will discuss different foods which may aid you sleep. Of course we will also talk about foods you should avoid if you want to have a good sleep.

One of the most common things you can do in order to aid your sleep is to have some milk before you sleep. I believe most people will know this. However, you may not know why milk can help you to sleep. It is because milk can help you to have the hormone to control your sleep. In fact, milk is not the only thing you can take. You may also consider take some honey or egg whites. They are also good to help you to sleep.

On the contrary, you should never drink coke or coffee before sleeping. It is because coffee and coke are loaded with caffeine and this will make you more difficult to fall asleep. As a matter of fact, other things such as tea and cocoa are also rich in caffeine content. As a result, you should avoid having them before going to bed.

The time you eat will also affect your sleep. As a rule of thumb, it is better for you to have your last meal at least four hours before you sleep. You should never eat too much in your last meal. You will feel extremely uncomfortable if you eat too much. If it is possible, you should never have a heavy supper. And you should also have it early in the evening.

There are some minerals which can aid your sleep. For example, cheese is loaded with calcium and calcium can aim your sleep. Magnesium is another mineral that can help you to have a better sleep. There are also vitamins which may help. You can take food rich in vitamins B6 and B12. Examples of such foods are liver, meat, fish and soybeans.

What Listening To Your Body Will Do For You

Wellness No Comments

Are you telling me that my body talks? You may very well ask: “What the heck does he mean when he tells me listen to what my body is saying”? My mouth is pretty much the only part of my body that talks, so what am I listening to? Very often we are so busy living life that we don’t notice the subtle messages are bodies are trying to send us.

Our bodies are constantly sending us signals or messages. It lets us know if it is too hot, or too cold, if it is in pain, if it is in stress, if it is starting to get sick and so on. The issue is whether we listen to the messages or not. The reality for most of us is that we do not listen to the message until it is far too late. Can you relate to this?

Sometimes the body whispers to you that you are not getting enough rest. The body needs rest to rejuvenate, so it sends us a message letting us know we need rest. This message is different for everyone. It could be a sniffle, it could be a feeling of fatigue, or it could be sore muscles.

The question is what do we do about it? Many people pop a couple of pills and keep on doing what they were doing. But the body still needs rest. So the next signal is a little stronger. The sniffle is now a cough, then it becomes a cold and if it is still not dealt with it turns into the flu or double pneumonia. Eventually the body takes the tap on the shoulder and makes it a 2 by 4 across the head, and we get so sick we are either in the hospital or we are in bed for some days or weeks.

Our bodies know better what we need than our minds do. Our minds often ignore reality and try to do the convenient or seemingly urgent instead of what is really important. And as a result the whole being suffers.

The question really is this - do you want to be healthy or not? I did not ask if you wanted to be successful, or if you wanted to get that promotion. The question is do you want to be healthy?

If you abuse your body and ignore the messages it sends you, be prepared to pay the price. The cost will be different for each individual. You can either pay now or pay later, but the bill does come due. This is why so many wise people tell us that our health is the most important thing we have.

Financial Midlife Crisis, Do You Have It?

Wellness No Comments

Going through a midlife crisis is not fun at all. I dont have to tell you that. And being confused all the time as to whats next or what you need to do to fix it.
Now when it comes to midlife crisis’ there are many different kinds and reasons. We call all agree on that, but the cure is whats different for everyone. Now many believe that YOU are the cause of your midlife crisis. And that may be true to some extent, but when you really look into it. Its just simply your comfort level that has you in the exact position youre in. Now by that I mean if you were more comfortable, you may have less money.

If you went golfing more often, or fishing etc… you may be happier? but you may also have less money because of it. And thats all Im refering to when I say its your current comfort level that has put you in this postion. Now lets go the other direction, what if you golf all the time now, or were always going on vacations to South America, maybe you would have more money if you didnt do these things as much, but you may not be as happy as you are right now.

So what I suggest is accept who you are, and if you dont like who you are, then go meet new people, that has always worked for everyone of all ages. I have suggested that to hundreds of people who were feeling blue. And it works, you will meet people who are worse off than you, but also people you dont even like, but it will really help you just accept who you are. But when it comes to the actual financial side of a financial midlife crisis, you must get out of your comfort zone. Something has to change, in order for your financial crisis to change. Lets say your 45 years old and only have $25,000 in the bank. Well your not really on pace to save up for a comfortable retirement. So you must step back and change somthing, sometimes a drastic change, but none the less, there are things that will help your financial crisis.

For many, its a new career, or a new job, just a change of pace or scenerie is all it takes to cheer one up. But what about a whole new make over, now thats where lives change and leaders come from. Life changing experiences come in all sorts, from spending money on a business or even just donating it all to a charity and accepting the fact you will never retire. So you can stop worrying about it. Not my recommendation, but the business is always a good idea.

Online business can be started for $1000-$5000 with a income potential of $100,000 - $1,000,000 yr. After all the internet is the way of the future, but what about a brick and mortar business? If you enjoy fishing, perhaps you could take some money out of your nest egg and start a fishing store in the mall, for an easy $75,000 + startup, not to mention the monthy overhead. As well as the turn around is pathetic really when you compare it to an online business.
You probably remember the .com phase a few years ago when all these people were selling out for millions. Well, the internet is a little diffferent now, but its still young and there is well over a billion dollars spent online every year.

So if your a reward seekeer, or eager for change, pehaps look into all options before deciding to make the big change that is needed to get out of your comfort zone that led to your financial midlife crisis.
Hopefully this has helped clarify your situation and allowed you to more clearly see a path to brighter skys.

Rick Lim helpmany people from all aspects of life get started with an online business. My father in law went through a 5 year midlife crisis until he got cancer, which was thankfully cured. He got his big push out of the comfort zone, dont let yours be that way, control yours and become a little uncomfortable now, so that you can become more comfortable in the long term.

A Presentation To Sun Protection Your Guide For Safety

Wellness No Comments

Sun protection Is not simply for sissies. UV protective cover from the sun’s damaging rays is crucial for anybody who wishes to mature older graciously. Adequate sun protection is very essential for anybody who wishes to minimize his or her chance of getting skin cancer.

People are at last starting to recognize that though sunlight is a significant element of all outdoor activities and a big mood enhancer, unrestrained exposure may contribute to often unpleasantness. A bad sunburn represents the most direct result of excess exposure. Long term, surplus exposure may harm the skin causing it to be prone to wrinkling and worse, the development of skin cancer.

When do you require sunlight protection?

MDs will assure you that sun protective cover is required every time and they are correct. Realistically nevertheless it is crucial to protect yourself and your loved ones anytime you’ll be spending time outdoors between 10:00 am and 3:00 pm, while the sun UV radiation are at their peak.

People do not realize that they could still get sun burn even if the sun isn’t shining. Overcast days could be some of the worst times for being outdoor in the sun without proper UV protection. And since ultraviolet radiation rays can reflect off certain surfaces, people should be more protective from the sun when snow is covering the ground and also while in the water, specially if lying or playing on the sand and also when around cement or grass surface.

Understanding ultraviolet radiation rays

UV rays are the several wavelengths of energy that are created by the sun. Although dangerous, the sun’s energy is essential to human life. Luckily, as life on earth has evolved and so has the ability and capacity to endure UV rays. The most crucial shelter against the harmful ultraviolet radiation rays is the ozone layer - a layer in the stratosphere that absorbs nearly most of the several types of UV rays prior to reaching earth.

Almost all of this radiation from the sun is not visible to the human naked eye. The fact that the radiation is mostly invisible is likely the reason why the sun can be so harmful. It’s hard to convince a person to protect against something that can not be seen. From the several types of ultraviolet rays, the 2 that are responsible for skin damage are UVA and UVB rays. The sun also producess UVC damaging rays, which fortunately can’t get through the ozone layer and hence pose no threat to mankind.

The longer wavelength and more prevailing of the two UV radiation, UVA rays are responsible for long-term skin damage because they are absorbed deep into the human skin. Their intensity remains consistent irrespective of the time of day or time of year. As for UVB rays which are shorter wavelength, they cause the skin to tan or sunburns. Our human bodies need UVB rays to produce Vitamin D, which is an important and necessary vitamin. UVB rays strength varies during the day and time of the year, such as altitude and distance from the equator.

The UV Index is a scale tool measures from 0 to 11 (from low to high or extreme) and it is utilised to find out the strength of the sun UV radiation, especially the likelihood or odds for which the skin will or will not be affected when exposed to the sun for different time period.

How to protect yourself from UVA and UVB?

The most crucial and significant method for protecting your skin is to wear sun protection clothing which have ultra-protection factor of UPF50+, this means over 97.5% of UV rays are blocked and can not penetrate the fabric. UPF50+ is the highest rating given to sun protection clothing garments as certified by ARPANSA (Australian Radiation Protection And Nuclear Safety Agency). Also it is important to wear a sun hat, and use sunscreen (at least SPF30+) on exposed skin where and when possible. Avoid direct sunlight, seek shade, and wear UV protection sunglasses.

J Edmond have been working in the sun protection clothing industry for several years. The main aim is to raise awareness of the sun’ UV radiation and it’s effect on human skin. Find out more about sun protection clothing and how you can enjoy your outdoor activities.

Overview of Caffeine Addiction

Wellness No Comments

A caffeine addiction is very similar to any other addiction, be it drugs, alcohol or nicotine. When you are addicted to something, it means you feel that you must have this certain thing and it has an effect on your body. Sometimes people feel that you they cannot live without a particular thing. For some people this thing is caffeine and this comes in different forms, the most common being coffee or soft drinks. However there are other substances that have caffeine in them, which makes people crave the caffeine. When taken in large quantities or for an extended period of time caffeine can have the same effects on the body as alcohol, LSD or cocaine. Due to the massive number of people who consume caffeine on a daily basis, caffeine is actually the most consumed drug in the world.

An addiction to caffeine affects each individual person differently. This means that one person addicted to caffeine can get through the day drinking only a few cups of coffee or a couple of cans of cola, when another person addicted to caffeine cannot make it through the day without drinking a litre of cola in addition to drinking ten cups of coffee a day.

Consumption of caffeine is an accepted practice so people never think of a person who drinks ten cups of coffee a day and consumed a litre of cola as being addicted. However, caffeine affects the body and central nervous system in the same way that an illegal drug would. However, unlike the effects of illegal drugs, the effects of caffeine are rarely fatal. Symptoms from overuse of caffeine can range from anxiety to tremors and fever and even hypertension. While these symptoms may sound harmless, hypertension can lead to a heart attack or even a stroke which can be fatal.

An addiction to caffeine may be confused with a dependency on caffeine. When a person has formed a dependency on caffeine it is slightly less than an addiction. Although some people who have formed a dependency on caffeine often feel that they are addicted because they have tried to stop consuming caffeine and have failed. This does not warrant their dependency being called an addiction. Medical professionals might say that they simply lack the will power to quit. When something is an addiction the person is not able to quit on their own and often they require help from a third party.

While there is treatment for various addictions such as drugs and alcohol, treatment for an addiction to caffeine is an area that has never been explored before. This is because no one is quite sure what works and what doesn’t since an addiction to caffeine encompasses so many things. There are some people who feel that quitting cold turkey, as they say, is the answer, there are others who feel that the medical professionals should step in and help the caffeine addict deal with the problems a person may experience when they quit consuming caffeine.

Learn About The Effects of Caffeine on Your Body

Wellness No Comments

When you drink tea, coffee or soda pop, these drinks contain caffeine, which is absorbed by the stomach in as little as 45 minutes after you drink it. Then it travels to all parts of the body, so it is not just your stomach that feels the effects of caffeine. Caffeine affects people in different ways. Some people say that they cannot have any drinks containing caffeine in the evening because they will find it hard to get to sleep. Others say that having a cup of coffee or tea just before bedtime helps them to fall asleep easily.

The amount of caffeine needed to have an effect on the body varies from one person to another. It depends on the person’s body size and the degree of tolerance a person has for caffeine. Even though it doesn’t take long for caffeine, a mild dose will wear off in about three hours. Caffeine is seen as an ergogenic because it increases the amount of energy one has for work, whether it is mental or physical. In studies done on long distance runners, the results showed that those who consumed caffeine drinks were able to sustain the run much longer than those who drank only water or juices.

Caffeine acts as a mild stimulant on the nervous and cardiovascular systems. It decreases fatigue and increases attentiveness, allowing a person to focus on a job better even when feeling tired. Some of the other effects that caffeine has on the body include an increase in heart rate, a rise in the body’s metabolic rate increased blood flow and increased respiratory rate.

When you consume drinks containing caffeine for a long period of time, your body will develop a tolerance for it. This means that in order to achieve the same effect, you will have to consume larger doses of caffeine. Many people become addicted to it and cannot go for any length of time without a cup of coffee or a soft drink. When you go without caffeine for a long period of time, the result could be headache, fatigue, irritability, depression and a lack of concentration.

The amount of caffeine in coffee depends on the type of bean used in the brew. Because of the growing addiction to caffeine, there are many flavors of decaffeinated coffee on the market and soft drinks that do not contain ant caffeine. Numerous prescription drugs also contain caffeine, especially painkillers, because it increases the ability of prescribed drug to perform in the way that it should.

In studies done on caffeine consumption, results have shown that consuming moderate amounts does not have any adverse affect on the cardiovascular system. It appears to increase the excretion of calcium, which the bones need to be strong and healthy. This is very important in the prevention of osteoporosis in older people. Research has also shown there is no link between consuming caffeine and cancer, but consuming excessive amounts of caffeine has been related to miscarriages and some birth defects.

How To Eat, Drink And Stay Healthy

Wellness No Comments

I don’t know about you, but I have to confess that I like good food. However, as I’m getting older my craving for a delicious meal is colliding with an increasing desire for a longer, healthier life.

Living forever may be too much to ask for, but I would certainly like to live a long time with the best possible quality of life. That among other things means eating healthier; And that, I’m afraid means making some changes to my eating habits.

We all know that there is food everywhere and it may be a bit of a challenge to avoid the traps - unless you have a strategy…

Actually it’s more of a plan than a strategy and here are a few steps that I use:

* “Portion control, portion control, portion control” - I repeat this to myself whenever I sit down to eat.

* If I serve myself I take half of what I use to take, so that I can go back for seconds - I just never do.

* If I’m a guest, I gently let the host know that I prefer smaller portions. I even have a healthy snack before leaving to curb my appetite (no I don’t tell the host).

* At dinner I focus on eating more of the healthier dishes, like salads, clear soups, etc. Skipping dessert is a good thing, but if there is cheese and grapes, have the grapes.

* At a dinner party I concentrate on the conversation to take my mind away from the food. Not only is I good for your health, but it also makes you a much more interesting guest and you may see an increase in the number of invitations you get.

* Whenever I go shopping, and I love shopping, I avoid stands and stores that give out food samples.

* If I go out for dinner, or lunch for that matter, I select a restaurant rather than a fast food place, as a restaurant often has a healthier menu selection.

Well, I could go on and on, but you get the gist. Your health is in your hands, you are control. Many people say that they should loose a few pounds, but in most cases it is likely more that just a few - much more.

Clearly eating habits are not the only things affecting someone’s health. We all know how important exercising is, but that’s a subject for another time.

To your health!

How to Ease Dental Fears in Children

Wellness No Comments

Many children have fears of going to the doctor and this is also true for children visiting the dentist for the first time. When you take your child to the dentist for the first time, it can be quite scary. The chairs are big, the lights are bright and the dentist wears a scary mask and gloves. You can try to rationalize with your child and tell him or her that there is nothing to be afraid of, but your child still may be scared. The good news is that there are things that you can do to help ease the fears of that first dentist visit. If you are taking your child to the dentist for the very first time, consider the following:

Your child should see a dentist by the age of two. This seems like a very young age, but this is a good time to instill the importance of regular visits. The dentist will introduce your child to the office and show him or her the equipment in a non-scary way. In addition, the dentist will probably talk to your child about the proper way to brush and the importance of eating healthy. If you start taking your child to the dentist at an early age, he or she is less likely to be afraid.

Read books about visiting the dentist. One great way to prepare a young child for the first trip to the dentist is to visit your local library or bookstore and find books about visiting the dentist. Many popular childrens character have books that explain going to the dentist in an easy, child friendly way. You might even find movies or cartoons about going to the dentist.

See a pediatric dentist. If you have tried taking your child to the dentist and the visit ended in tears, you might want to consider using a pediatric dentist. A pediatric dentist is specially trained to work with children and their needs. In addition, you may find that a pediatric dentist uses bright colors and smaller chairs in their office making the visit seem less scary. Pediatric dentists usually see patients up to the age of eighteen.

Take your child to the dentist with you. If you are going for a regular check up at your own dentist and you do not need any major work, think about taking your child along to watch. Before you do this, speak to your dental office and make sure that is acceptable. In many cases, your dentist will allow your child to help examine your teeth. That helps them know what they can expect at their first visit.

Take a favorite toy. When it is time for your child to go visit the dentist, allow your child to bring along their favorite toy, doll, pillow or blanket. Having something that is familiar may help your child cope with the visit easier.

If you have a child that has a fear of visiting the dentist, try some of these tips for an easier visit.

Womens Health Questions About Womens Health Problems

Wellness No Comments

Answers to womens health questions on womens health problems can help a woman better understand her health and how to improve it. Today, a woman must both attend to her career while taking care of family responsibilities. Before and after work, she is likely involved in meal preparation, seeing to the family’s needs along with doing the non-stop stream of household chores. It is easy to understand how women can become nearly exhausted and begin asking womens health questions and looking for answers.

And to make matters worse, there is so much health information available that is at the same time confusing and conflicting. Who to believe? Who is trying to sell me what? Even doctors are often promoting this and that product as the latest greatest solution to various maladies and womens health problems. Perhaps you find yourself asking questions such as these:

Womens Health Questions #1 - Are Bioidentical Hormones Different from Synthetic Drugs?

Yes, bioidentical hormones are very different from the synthetic drugs. The term “bioidentical” means that the hormone is exactly the same as what the body naturally makes. The body will treat a bioidentical hormone as if the body produced it naturally. When used in dosages similar to the body’s normal production, bioidentical hormone replacement therapy can provide health benefits without the side effects associated with non-natural or synthetic drugs. Synthetic hormones are not natural to the body - they are different from natural hormones so they can be patented and marketed by the drug companies.

Womens Health Questions #2 - Are There Really Any Best Vitamins for Women?

Absolutely! We all have what is referred to as dietary gaps, meaning, it is difficult to consume the necessary foods that provide needed nutrients every day. Who regularly eats the recommended 5-9 servings of vegetables and fruits each day? It is difficult for anyone to do and besides, the nutrient values found in foods today are lower than decades ago. Taking a high-quality, broad spectrum, anti-aging daily nutritional supplement formulated specifically for women helps fill in the dietary gaps that we all have.

Womens Health Questions #3 - Why Should I Be Using Natural Cleaning Products?

For sure! Since 1945, more than 80,000 synthetic chemicals have been invented, the majority derived from a petroleum base. When using home cleaning products that you pour out of a container, you receive exposure either through your skin or from the fumes that you breathe. And what is even much worse is when you spray the petroleum-based toxic cleaners into the air, doing so means you will be breathing the airborne chemical particles directly into your lungs which will contribute to various womens health problems! Natural cleaning products are easily available that are priced competitively and reduce exposure to the harsh chemicals found in regular household cleaners and sprays.

Womens Health Questions #4 - Why Do Uterine Fibroids Develop in Women?

Uterine fibroids are known as muscle tumors and in most cases are non-cancerous. They are a very common growth in the female genital tract. Fibroid growths afflict as many as 80% of American women in their 30’s to 50’s. One in four women will have complaints serious enough to seek medical treatment! The true causes of fibroids remain unknown, however, there are several factors that do seem to affect fibroid growths in women.

Womens Health Questions #5 - Where Can I Find Answers to More Questions About Health?

Online! Understand what are normal changes in the reproductive cycle and health and what changes and symptoms indicate hormonal imbalances brought on by poor nutrition, excessive stress and other lifestyle factors. Learn as much as you can about your health, the reasons for the womens health problems you may have and options available to you.

If you feel your health is not what it once was and want answers to your specific womens health questions, begin by understanding what is healthy and normal and what is not. How you feel and perform every day is an issue that is too important to leave unattended any longer.

Stress Management - How To Cope With Stress

Wellness No Comments

Identifying stress and being aware of its effect on our lives is not enough for reducing its harmful effects. Just as there are many sources of stress, there are many possibilities to manage it. But it requires work toward relief: change the source of stress and change your reaction to it.

Here’s how it works.

1.Reccognise your stressors and your emotional and physical reactions.

Be aware of your distress. Don’t ignore it. Don’t gloss over your problems. Determine what distresses you. What are you telling yourself about what those stressors means? Determine how your body responds to the stress. Do you become nervous or physically upset? If so,in what specific ways?

2. What can you change?

Can you change your stressors by avoiding or eliminating them completely?
Can you reduce their intensity (manage them over a period of time instead of on a daily or weekly basis)? Can you reduce your exposure to stress (take a break, leave the physical premises)? Can you take the time and energy necessary to making a change (goal setting, time management techniques, and delayed gratification strategies may be helpful here)?

3.Your emotions will determine the way you react.

Your stress reaction is caused by your perception of danger…physical danger and/or emotional danger. Do you view your stressors in an exaggerated way and/or taking a difficult situation and making it a disaster?
Do you expect to please everyone?
Are you overreacting and seeing things as totally critical and urgent? Do you feel you must always prevail in every situation?
Try to adopt more moderate views; try to see the stress as something you can cope with rather than something that overpowers you.
Try to moderate your excess emotions. Put the situation in perspective. Do not dwell on the negative aspects and the “what if’s.”

4. How to control your physical reactions to stress.

Slow, deep breaths will bring your heart rate and respiration back to normal.
Relaxation techniques can reduce muscle tension. Medications, when prescribed by a physician, can help in the short term. However, they alone are not the answer.Learning to moderate these reactions on your own is a preferable long-term solution.

5. How to build your physical reserves.

Exercise for cardiovascular fitness three to four times a week (moderate, prolonged rhythmic exercise is best, such as walking, swimming, cycling, or jogging).
Eat well-balanced, nutritious meals.
Keep your ideal weight.
Stay away from nicotine, excessive caffeine, and other stimulants.
Mix pleasure with work. Take breaks and get away when you can.
Get enough sleep. Be as regular with your sleep schedule as possible.

6. Reinforce your emotional reserves.

Develop some supportive friendships/relationships.
Reach for realistic goals which are meaningful to you, rather than goals others have for you that you do not share.
Expect some frustrations, failures, and sorrows.
Always be kind and gentle with yourself — be a friend to yourself.

Can The South Beach Diet Help You Lose Weight ?

Wellness No Comments

This very popular diet is one in which the user must have the right balance of carbohydrates and fats in order to lose weight. Dieters, who are looking to lose weight, must eat only good carbohydrates and fats. All other forms should be avoided. The diet is made up of three basic phases.

Phase one consists of a 14 day period. The dieter needs to eat three balanced meals, consisting of beef, fish, turkey, chicken, eggs, vegetables, nuts, salad and cheese. You can have a healthy, no carb snack in between your breakfast and your lunch. As with any diet, you need to drink as much water as possible.

During phase 1, you cannot have certain foods that are high in carbohydrates. For instance, rice, bread, fruit, pasta and baked goods are completely off limits. Also off limits are sweets. So cookies, cakes or ice cream should be avoided.

After the 14 day period, you then move into phase 2. With phase 2, there is no set period of time. Phase 2 continues until you have the lost all of the weight you want to lose. Phase 2 will vary from person to person, depending on the exact number of pounds you wish to lose. For some, the phase may only last a couple of weeks. While others, the phase may last several months.

For most people, by the time they have entered the second phase of the diet, they should have lost around 10 pounds. This, of course, all hinges on the notion that phase 1 was followed correctly. Wavering from phase 1 can have a negative impact on the other phases.

During phase 2, weight loss will be slowed down and be more consistent. On average, dieters lose around 2 pounds a week. During phase 2, some foods that were prohibited in phase 1, may gradually be re-introduced. However, they need to be consumed in moderation. Other foods, such as white rice should be avoided all together. Replacing white rice with brown rice will assist in the overall weight loss experience.

After you have lost all the weight you want, you then enter into phase 3. Phase 3 is considered to be a maintenance phase. During this phase, you are allowed to begin to eat more normally. Many of the restrictions that were imposed during phase 1 and 2 are lifted. However, you need to incorporate some of your diet habits into your every day life.

Adapting to the new way of eating may be difficult for some. However, it has been proven that doing so could dramatically improve your cardiovascular system. Also, it could help to reduce your risk of a heart attack.

As with any diet, results will vary from person to person. Also, is important to see a physician before starting any diet regimen. The South Beach diet requires the dieter to revamp their way of thinking and eating for a lifetime. But following the diet precisely has proven beneficial for the many who have tried it.

5 Tips for Living a Healthy Lifestyle

Wellness No Comments

These days, everyone seems to be becoming more health conscious. We know so much more than we used to about what is good for us and what is bad. It is said that a little of what you fancy does you good and this does tend to be true. Here are five tips for a healthy (yet enjoyable!) lifestyle:

1. Eat a balanced diet

A balanced diet does not have to be a boring diet. As long as you are getting adequate proteins, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals and fats, that slice of chocolate cake you’re craving shouldn’t do you too much harm. Enjoy your meals, chew your food properly and eat a variety of foods, including five portions of fruit or vegetables a day. Too much processed food or sugary food can make you feel sluggish.

2. Drink more water

Water is such a basic requirement and so key to survival, yet ninety percent of us don’t drink enough! Six to eight cups a day is the recommended minimum. We can live for several weeks without food but only a few days without water. If you don’t like the taste, mix it with juice, sugar-free cordial or make hot fruit tea. Vegetables and fruit contain plenty of water too. If your urine is darker in color than straw, drink more water!

3. Take time out to relax

Relaxation is very important to a healthy mind. However you choose to relax - deep breathing, yoga, fishing, having a bath, reading a book - try to chill out for an hour a day if you can. Mental exhaustion can cause stress, depression and anxiety disorders. Modern lifestyles can be hectic - if you’re not working, you’re running after the kids or racing around the grocery store or doing something else. Relax! Breathe deeply. Even fifteen minutes of this is better than none, but do try for an hour a day.

4. Get moving!

There is no excuse not to exercise because there literally is something for everyone. Not everybody loves pounding the treadmill or pumping iron in the gym but anything that gets your heart rate up is a good cardiovascular activity. How about playing tennis, meeting a friend for a swimming session or taking up self-defense or a martial art? If you can’t think of anything better, run up and down the stairs a few times. Feeling better now? Exercise releases endorphins, which cheer you up.

5. Cut down on smoking and drinking

Have you ever met a smoker who is glad they started smoking? Neither have I. It is the single most destructive thing you can do to your body. Drinking can be harmful if you consume alcohol in excess or binge drink but, like most things, moderation is the key. A glass of red wine has even been proven to be good for the heart. But too much can be devastating to your health.

Making Good Decisions To Help You Stay Healthy And Happy

Wellness No Comments

Good health is largely the result of good lifestyle decisions. Eating a variety of natural foods, drinking plenty of clean water, exercising daily and getting adequate sleep are essential for good health, well being and overall happiness. It is also very important to avoid foods that deplete the body of valuable nutrients and cause the liver to overwork as this can not only cause us to be physically under par but also to be mentally and emotionally off balance.

Creating a healthy lifestyle doesn’t have to be onerous. Anyone’s life can accommodate good health; it’s just a matter of prioritizing. Parking a little distance from the office can ensure a fifteen minute walk each way. Keeping a bottle of water on your desk reminds you to sip it. Focusing on all the wonderful foods you can eat will help you avoid craving the ones you shouldn’t. Establishing a consistent night time routine that is relaxing and encourages you to go to bed at around the same time each night can support you in having a restful sleep.

Planning ahead can ease the pressure to go off the rails. If impulse buying is a problem, perhaps online shopping is a wise alternative. If you don’t see it, you won’t be tempted to buy it. Furthermore, if it is not in the pantry or the refrigerator you can’t eat it. The added benefit of avoiding the supermarkets is that you don’t get influenced by family members who want their own way when it comes to grocery shopping. Never underestimate the ‘hassle effect’ in the supermarket.

Most experts agree that a healthy diet will include five servings of a variety of fruits and vegetables. In practice, this can actually be difficult to achieve. One way to get around this is to serve a platter of cut up fruit with a meal. Serving fresh salad with a meal also contributes to this dietary requirement.

Oily fish such as salmon or tuna should be eaten at least twice a week to provide much needed essential fatty acids. Lean meat should also be served a couple of times a week if you are not vegetarian. If you are vegetarian, it is very important to make sure you are eating mixed protein sources that combined will provide all your body’s protein needs.

It is recommended that we need to drink at least eight glasses of water daily, however this is the minimum required. Everyone should pay careful attention to their own body’s fluid requirements. If you are exercising heavily in a hot climate, for example, you may need to drink twice this amount of water.

Stress can affect our bodies’ abilities to utilize the nutrients we ingest, so controlling stress is very important to maintaining or achieving good health and being happy. Natural supplements can often be beneficial in calming the nervous system and overcoming any nutritional deficiencies that may be preventing the body from operating at an optimal level.

More than anything, we need to pay attention to the messages our bodies are trying to give us and make whatever adjustments are necessary to bring our lives and our bodies back into balance. If we do this, the resulting improvement in our health will have a flow on effect into all areas of our lives. Happiness and success may well be an unexpected benefit.

Steam Shower For Your Body

Wellness No Comments

You have enjoyed the benefits of a hot steamy shower. In addition to the shower nowadays you can take a steam shower. These various steam showers are available for sale in sauna and steam companies. When you buy a steam shower unit you can reap the benefits from a steam shower and a normal shower.

These different showers look different in design. Some of these will be an enclosed cubicle. This cubicle will resemble a normal shower in looks. You will find multiple shelves in the shower where you can place your various toiletries. There are some steam shower units where there are fittings for a telephone, CD player and if you want a radio as well.

The product has a fiber glass door that is designed so that it fits flush against the doorway. For this reason you will not find any steam from the shower escaping into the cold air of the bathroom. This design feature also ensures that there is a consistent flow of hot steam enveloping the cubicle.

The effects of this type of the bathroom are usually felt almost immediately. Since the steam that is generated from the shower is trapped inside of the it you will feel this mist slowly pouring into your body. The result of this is in many ways similar to the sauna in that you begin to sweat.

Unlike the sauna your body does not get overheated as the mist is also cooling. The other effects of a steam shower include your body flushing out any environmental toxins that our stressful lives have a way attracting. Your muscles will also become loose and the tense, painful feeling that you may experience in your head and shoulder muscles will be eased away.

When you are buying your steam shower you should have your electrician come and advice you about where you should install it. Your steam shower unit should have access to a near by electrical socket where the electrical generator can be connected to. The electrical amount of power that it will need is about 220 volts.

Once your shower unit is installed you will need to have the various steam jets point away from the person who is seated inside of the shower. Since the steam shower is also fitted onto the shower fitting you can use the shower head to wash and cool yourself off after your steam shower is finished.

To get the ultimate experience in a shower you can add some healing aromatic aromatherapy oils into a container or dispenser that is found in the it so that these soothing oils will mix with the water and provide you with a great relaxing end to a stressful and tiring day.

Beyond Dieting: How to Keep the Weight Off For Good

Wellness No Comments

For many people the hardest part about dieting is not losing weight but keeping the weight off. The reason for this is because many people fall back into their old habits of eating not long after their diets have ended and become afflicted with yo-yo dieting.

However, successful dieters will tell you that it is important not only to know how to lose weight but how to keep it off for good.

One method that successful dieters use to keep their weight off is by proper planning of their meals and activities.

Planning Your Meals

Meal planning is perhaps one of the single most important steps you can take to keeping the weight off and getting control of your eating habits. As a part of your weight management efforts, you should try to plan your weekly meals so that you stock your kitchen with the healthy and nutritious foods and snacks. Having a healthy choice of food in your pantry and your refrigerator can serve as a preventative measure against binging or snacking on foods that may cause you to fall back to your old eating habits.

Planning Time for Exercise

Additionally, your weekly planning should also include some form of exercise. Keep in mind that research shows that exercise is one of the most important factors for maintaining weight control. Therefore, scheduling exercise into your routine is a crucial step to managing your weight.

Keeping a Food Diary

Keeping a food diary may also be essential to you keeping your weight under control. By monitoring your food and activities in a diary, you may be able to identify any problem areas you might have, before they become major issues.

Additionally, one of the things you can record in your food diary is the times of day that you feel tempted to snack. By writing these times down, you may be able to plan activities for yourself instead of succumbing to your cravings.

Dealing with Cravings

Being prepared to deal with your cravings is another important aspect of weight control. Most people experience cravings at one point or another. However, knowing how to deal with these cravings separates the successful dieters from the unsuccessful ones.

One strategy that you can follow when you begin to experience cravings, is try to outlast your cravings. Research shows that most cravings go away after 20 minutes, so if you can outlast your cravings without giving in, it will eventually pass. Additionally, instead of giving in to your cravings, do something pleasant like taking a relaxing bath or talking to a friend on the phone.

Eating Out

Long term weight management doesn’t mean you can never eat out. What it might mean, however, is that you may need to prepare yourself mentally in advance for the experience. For example, one strategy is if you know you are going out for dinner, maybe you can try to mentally plan out what you might order before you get to the restaurant. Having an idea about what you are going to eat before you get to the restaurant may prevent you from over-eating once you get there.

Additionally, if you know ahead of time that you are going to eat out, try to eat a little lighter, earlier in the day. Also, once you are at the restaurant, try to skip any appetizers and desserts and go with the main meal of the evening.

Although learning weight control can be a challenge for many people, it is important to realize that by being conscious of your habits and by monitoring yourself, success can be yours and you can learn to manage your weight and keep the pounds off for good.

In the making of the allium compounds, it is given that the fresh garlic bulb is usually dehydrated, and crushed into a powder. After that, it is then compacted to produce a tablet. It is then the tablet form that is most regularly applied commercial preparation of the garlic. It is also noted that the raw whole cloves of garlic have somehow the same effects.

The allium compounds that are believed to be responsible for the garlics actions have been alleged to ward off the evil spirits and it will help in healing the wounds. This is the common belief of many people and until now such belief is still practiced.

Now what are the health benefits of the allium compounds?

Numerous studies have been conducted and fortunately those studies bring out some of the fundamental uses of the allium compound. And aside from that, the potential for antitumor and antimicrobial effects are also being studied by some experts.

For further information, the cholesterol lowering effects of the allium compounds which in turn are attributed to the garlic have been well documented by some experts in the human to really see the possible outcomes from such application. It is then found out from such study that the garlic, from which this supplement is created, may reduce the total serum cholesterol, triglycerides, and LDL, while heightening the level of HDL. In fact, certain outcomes of one of the clinical study conducted for the functions of the allium compounds once reported that there is a mean reduction of six percent on the total serum cholesterol and eleven percent in the LDL.

Those studies that are conducted to find out the health benefits reported that an allium compound known as methylallyltrisulphide which is found in garlic oil has been associated to the inhibition of platelet aggregation. There is also another allium compound in the name of ajoene, which is recently being studied and investigated for believing that it has a great effect on the platelet aggregation.

However, the mechanism for such studies still remains unclear, but the preliminary pilot studies with AIDS patients suggest that the garlic along with its allium compounds have a great effect in reducing morbidity.

A Few Tips For Achieving A Balanced Lifestyle

Wellness No Comments

Living in a hectic world such as ours can sometimes get to us. You may feel like you’re completely exhausted nearly all of the time. You work 50 or 60 hours a week, run all over town after work, and by the time you get home, you’re spent. There’s nothing left for your family or your dreams. Nearly everyone has experienced this feeling at some point in their life. What is the key to getting out of this never ending pressure? Living a balanced life is essential for everyone.

One of the most successful business people of all time, Oprah Winfrey, said, ‘I’ve learned that you can’t have everything and do everything at the same time.’ This may seem simple, but it’s also great advice. This is quite possibly the issue that gives everyone the most trouble. We want to be the most successful business person, have the most friends, have the best family, and still have time to relax.

While you can do many things in your life, the key is to prioritize them. You can’t try to do everything all at the same time. First of all, you must have goals that guide your daily actions. They will help point you in the right direction. If you don’t do something that moves you in the direction of your goal every day, then you’re living your life for someone else. This is not the key to living a balanced life.

Second, you have to prioritize your actions before its time to do them. The night before is a great time to think about what you’d like to accomplish. Every night, write down the six most important things you want to accomplish the next day. Don’t worry about writing 20 things, just six. Put the most important one at the top and work on it until you get done. Then move on to the next one and so on. This will help you achieve balance in your daily activities. It will help you focus on what is really important to you.

In every area of your life, there must be balance. You can’t save all your money and you can’t spend it all. There must be a happy medium that only you know. It’s your job to find this balance. You can’t work all the time, but you must have a job. Go with your instincts in every area. Just remember to maintain balance in every situation.

How To Safely Make Your Home Smell Nice

Wellness No Comments

Ah, there is nothing more welcoming and memorable than walking into a nice smelling home. Do you want your home to smell nice and clean, but do you also want a better, and safer alternative to expensive synthetic air fresheners which can be unhealthy? Synthetic aerosol air fresheners and room sprays can be the cause of severe breathing problems in children and people with asthma. A scary fact is, that the manufacturers of these synthetic air fresheners keep the chemical composition a closely-guarded secret. They are designed to mask or cover up odors rather than remove the odor. However, it’s far better to eliminate odor from the source by cleaning than trying to cover it up.

First, identify the source of any odors. Garbage can be taken outdoors and the other most common odor sources; the kitchen and bathroom can be cleaned with an non-toxic cleaner. Cooking odors from strong smelling foods will disappear after a short period of time.

Here are some safe and easy ideas to make your home smell great every day and when company comes calling too.

For all the rooms in you your home you can use a non-aerosol room spray made with all natural essential oils. These are safer and the natural scents will make your home smell nice, clean and fresh. There are a wide variety of scents available, try an energizing citrus, a warming spice, an exhilarating mint or pine scent to enhance the ambiance of your home.

Try this tip: Just before you expect your visitors to arrive, spray one or two pumps in your entry way or the first room they will enter. You just need to make a good first impression for your guest’s. After one has been exposed to a scent for a while it become less noticeable, and our noses can’t smell it any more that’s why you can’t smell your own perfume later in the day when everyone else still can.

You can give your home a wonderful appealing smell by simmering spices like cloves and cinnamon in water. It will smell like you’ve been busy baking all day. You can vary the scent by adding vanilla extract, orange or lemon peel to the mix. So, go ahead and raid your pantry or spice cupboard for these safe, economical and natural scents. You can use a special potpourri simmering pot, a mini crock pot or just a small saucepan on your stove top.

Scented candles are another alternative, look for the more environmentally friendly soy based candles with a lead-free wick as they burn cleaner. It’s important to remember, never leave a burning candle unattended or near anything that could catch fire.

Try this tip: Light a scented candle half an hour before you expect your company to arrive so your home will smell nice when your guests enter. Then you can extinguish it and the lovely scent will linger. It’s also more frugal to burn a candle for a short period of time.

With these tips and ideas you can safely and easily give your home a warm inviting ambiance for your family and visitors and enjoy a lovely smelling home everyday.

Dental Health: Important Steps To Keep Your Beautiful Smile

Wellness No Comments

Dental health is very important to us all. Unless you want to have a full mouth of dentures by the time you’re 40, it’s essential for you. Unfortunately, there is no exact set of rules that everyone can follow to get the same results. Everyone’s mouth is very different. Depending on what food you eat, what medicine you take, and your oral hygiene, your mouth is very different from someone else’s. This is why it is very difficult for some to take care of their mouth, while it may be very easy for you.

Think about this for a second. All of us know someone who brushes three times a day, flosses and they still have cavities when they go to the dentist. You may be lucky enough that you only brush once a day and you always have a good checkup. While a uniform code of conduct is just not possible, you can come up with a plan for you. In fact, you must do this. Developing a routine that works for you is very important to your dental health.

In order to do this, you must visit the dentist regularly. By regularly I don’t mean once a week, but maybe a few times per year. Consult with your dentist while there about a proper routine. Your dentist should be able to tell you what is best for your mouth. After all, they do see every angle of it during a checkup. If you’re on medication, there’s a chance that you experience dry-mouth. This condition affects your dental health greatly.

Your diet also has a great deal to do with how healthy your teeth are. Obviously, if you eat sweets frequently, you’ll need to take better care of your teeth than someone who doesn’t. If you sleep with your mouth open, you’re more likely to develop gingivitis. Many people have sleep conditions that only allow them to breathe through their mouth. All of these factors must be taken into consideration when formulating a routine for your mouth. Your dentist can help you sort through all of these things and find a plan that works for you.

There are many different things that will help you keep a beautiful smile. Your dental health is directly affected by the steps you take to prevent problems. Between visits to your dentist, you should inspect your mouth also. You deal with your mouth much more than anyone else, so you should check it out regularly. You should look for several things in your mouth. Check for chipped teeth, as this can lead to a much bigger problem in the long run. Look for sores or cuts on the gums or tongue. Your teeth could be discolored or you could be experiencing pain in some area of your mouth. If any of these signs show up, you should consult your dentist to see what they recommend.

Eat a healthy diet to ensure healthy teeth and gums. When you eat, there’s a chance that food particles will be stuck on or in between your teeth. Common sense tells you that the less frequently you eat sweets and sugar, the less likely it will be stuck on your teeth. This will prevent the enamel on your teeth from extensive damage. Besides sweets another very harmful substance for your teeth is tobacco. Tobacco in any form is terrible for your teeth. Everyone has witnessed firsthand the nasty yellow teeth of a chronic smoker. Even though you see that, you still may use tobacco.

Keep in mind, like causes create like effects. If you smoke or chew tobacco, it will hurt your teeth. There’s no getting around it. Quit immediately! It will add years onto your life and whiteness onto your teeth.

Besides these tips, brushing and flossing frequently is obviously still required. Brushing three times per day is ideal, but two times is ok. You should also floss everyday, and twice per day is ideal also. If you do it once per day, you’ll be doing pretty well. Another good activity to engage in is using fluoride. This is great for your teeth and can be found in toothpastes and mouthwash. After brushing and flossing, use mouthwash to finish it off. With these steps, you, too, can have great dental health.

Is Anxiety a “Disorder?”

Wellness No Comments

I receive a lot of e-mails regarding so-called conditions or diagnoses that individuals have been labeled with, and I felt it was time to say something on this subject. Understand, that I’m not against doctors or therapists or any other health care professionals. Many of these people are dedicated, well-trained practitioners who do their very best to help people live better lives. But I think there is an over emphasis on labeling individuals, so that their situation falls neatly within a pre-ordered category. The truth is, as individuals, everyone’s situation is unique, and it is highly unlikely that many people’s problems will fit neatly into one of these “boxes.”

Labels may have their use, as a type of shorthand to help practitioners get a basic idea of what’s going on in your life, but they can be disastrous to the individual. For example, years ago I was diagnosed with several “conditions” and their accompanying labels: unipolar depression, social anxiety, generalized anxiety disorder, etc. Unfortunately I took these labels seriously, and in doing so doomed myself to feel like a victim of all these so-called conditions for many years.

It was as if a doctor had told me I had a broken arm; I would have never thought, “I can take care of this on my own.” I would have recognized that I had a bona fide condition that was outside of my control and needed medical help to deal with. But behavioral problems are not so clear-cut. Most behavioral problems, like anxiety, are under the individuals control to a great extent, if not completely! Because whether we accept the responsibility or not, we ALL have control over our thoughts. And our habitual thoughts affect all of these so-called behavioral conditions to a great extent.

But if we give in to the “conditions” or the “labels,” it takes the situation completely out of our control. In other words, we become victims, and accept a victim status in regard to our anxiety or other problems. This victim mentality can quickly become a habit that causes us to always look outside of ourselves for the answers to our problems — including anxiety. The first step in overcoming anxiety problems is to overcome this victim mentality. This is probably the most difficult part of the process, but once an individual ceases to see themselves as a victim of anxiety or any other situation, improvement in their life comes quickly.

The tricky thing is, society often encourages us to accept this victim mentality. You see examples of this everywhere: in our courts, in the media and even in our educational institutions. So in some ways, developing the non-victim mentality requires you to go against a lot of what you see around you in the world. As I said, I believe this is the most difficult step in overcoming anxiety — or other life problems — but all real change springs from the realization that you as an individual are in control of your life, in control of your thoughts and in control of your behavior. Because frankly, if YOU are not in control of these things, who is?

Make Your Smile Bright, White and Friendly to Attract a Beautiful Result

Wellness No Comments

If you are interviewing for a new job, dating, or meeting a new business associate, it is important to make a dazzling first impression. You lead off with the intention to make the first breakthrough by flashing a warm, bright and attractive smile. Or do you? Look in the mirror and smile at yourself. Smile B-I-G. Do you like what you see?

If you’re like most people, you may quickly turn your smile into a frown. Your teeth may need a whiter appearance. It’s really not your fault. It is easy to have your teeth become discolored. Activities like smoking, drinking coffee or cola-colored soft drinks, chewing tobacco or eating foods that stain sneak up on you.

In fact, age does too. The American Dental Association suggests that plaque builds up on teeth as we get older and affect tooth color. With age, dentin, the layer beneath tooth enamel, gets darker and that can discolor teeth as well.

What can you do to fight back? Despite these challenges, you can develop your beautiful white smile and gleam confidence to those you meet. You can select any of a variety of whitening processes and products that cosmetic dentists use to get whiter teeth and a brighter life. If your budget is tight, you may explore home treatment and over-the-counter tooth whitening products.

If you have the time and the money, you can hire a professional cosmetic dentist to deliver effective teeth whitening processes. Make sure to investigate cosmetic dentists in your local region. Look through the Yellow Pages, on-line directories, get testimonials and recommendations.

Before starting any work, schedule a professional examination to learn what cosmetic options the dentist provides, and get a cost estimate. Professional whitening processes can range from several hundred dollars to several thousand dollars, depending on the dentist’s expertise, the region of the country, and the whitening process itself.

For example, a cosmetic dentist can whiten your teeth using brand name processes, like Zoom Whitening. You receive Zoom Whitening in the dentist’s office. The dentist uses laser-light activated whitening gel. Such a whitening procedure may last between one to one-and-half hours per visit. The number of treatments depends on how discolored your teeth are and how bright you want them to be.

Sometimes, you might just have a few stains on your front teeth or may just want to lighten your teeth color. You can use tooth whitening products purchased over the counter to achieve that goal. Teeth color may be lightened by repeatedly covering the enamel with a concentrated treating chemical, like hydrogen peroxide or baking soda.

Whitening strips and paint-on whiteners are short-term fixes that can whiten your teeth. Realize that these methods are not permanent and last a much shorter time than professional whitening treatments. You need to be aware of the short-comings. You could actually destroy the enamel on your teeth if you use strong treatments on a continual basis.

Another temporary approach is to use teeth whitening strips. Whitening strips are inexpensive and do brighten teeth. However, whitening strips are limited. Whitening strips use an exact dose of carbamide peroxide, but only whiten the teeth in direct contact with the whitening strip. Whitening strips cover the six center teeth, from eyetooth to eyetooth. If you need a quick bright smile, whitening strips may provide an answer, but you will not whiten all of your teeth.

If a white smile is your desire, you can use a tooth whitening process to your advantage. Make sure to evaluate both over-the-counter methods as well as professional whitening available through qualified dentists.

There is nothing like a white smile. It conveys to the world good health and confidence. It makes your boss, your date, your family and your friends smile back, while they think, “How does she (he) get such bright, white teeth?” Whiten your teeth today and become the dazzling person that people want to meet.

The Secrets to Amazing Self Confidence

Wellness No Comments

Lack of confidence not only affects your state of mind but it also affects how others treat you. Self confidence is something that can be missing from early childhood and continue throughout all of adulthood.

When you fail to develop the self confidence you need, it can affect every aspect of your life, e.g. school, relationships, employment and social situations. However, it’s never too late to improve your confidence and become the person you’ve always wanted to be.

This article will discuss the problems associated with a low confidence level and start you on the journey to a better understanding of what steps to take to rebuild your confidence to levels that you never thought possible.

Shyness and fear are typical expressions of a confidence problem. Hiding from interactions with others and avoidance are symptoms which are correctable with time, effort and the knowledge needed to rebuild your self confidence.

The tools you need for improving your confidence are with you all the time: your mind and your emotions. Your mind will begin the process of control while eliminating emotions like shyness and fear will start you on a track that continues on for the rest of your life. Remember, how you see yourself is how others will see you and having confidence will earn the confidence and respect of others.

Often times our own thoughts are to blame for our low self-confidence. Positive thinking needs to win-out over negative thoughts to be able to build and govern your self confidence. In essence, thinking positive will help develop a stronger you.

Negative thoughts often lead to negative actions and even the possibility of unlawful actions. Whereas, positive thinking will lead to positive actions which then lead to more postive thinking and more positive actions. It is a very circular behavior pattern both negative and positive. With the proper positive mindset, you will exude confidence and success will not be far behind.

So often in today’s world we promote the idea of fitting in and being like the rest of the crowd, but we really should be talking about what makes each one of us unique and how important our individual contributions to society are. Comparing ourselves to others often leads to continued negative thinking and again the cycle continues forever downwards. Emotions like envy can be very destructive and can quickly tear apart years of confidence building only to have to start over.

Developing your self confidence is a continuous life long process. Everyone will have setbacks in their lives but how we react to those setbacks often distinguishes between success and failure. Other powerful techniques that you may work on are learning to use your inner filter, self-criticism and positive self-talk which can take you to the next level of building self confidence.

How to gain self confidence starts with identification and ends with behavioral change and results in a better you. Get started building a better you today!

Lap Band - Seven Crucial Facts You Need to Know

Wellness No Comments

Lap band surgery has become quite popular over the last three years in the United states, as it was ten years ago in European countries.

As with most new break throughs there are always misunderstandings and not so credible advertisers trying to simply the subject.

We have attempted to take the seven most common misunderstood conecepts, or myths, surrounding Lap Band surgery and formulate the true facts.

Myth 1: Lap Band is an easy way to lose weight–
People tend to view Lap Band as an easy solution for a lifetime weight problem. Instead it should be viewed as a commitment one makes to change their life for the better. It is for people who have tried diets and exercise yet nothing seems to help. It might be a difficult life change, but it is worth it because it is the safe way for overweight individuals to successfully lose the pounds.

Myth 2: The surgery prevents proper nutrition–
Not true. Many doctors will prescribe vitamins and supplements to take after the surgery in order to help the recovery process. Individuals can still get proper nutrition, but since the stomach is restricted, you must change the way your body was accustomed to getting daily vitamins and minerals.

Myth 3: Even if you lose the weight, you will gain it back–
The secret is making a lifelong commitment. If you make the commitment to lose the weight and change old eating habits, you will of course lose the weight. If you continue to eat like you used to, then your chances of losing a large amount of weight decreases.

Myth 4: The surgery results in unhealthy rapid weight loss–
Weight loss does not occur overnight, that just would not be healthy. You will lose about 2-3 pounds a week, if you follow a doctor’s eating and exercise plan. And of course it will depend on your starting weight and your weight loss goals.

Myth 5: You will have to eat only a liquid diet–
You won’t be on a liquid diet forever that is only during the recovery process after surgery. Of course you shouldn’t continue to eat the supersized fast food meals like before, but you can eat solid foods. The idea is to eat smaller portioned meals, three times a day because the smaller amount will still give you a full feeling.

Myth 6: The follow-up care is not important–
The follow-up care is the most important part because changing your eating habits and old lifestyle is what leads to healthy weight loss. If you really care about losing weight, then the follow-up care will be a breeze.

Myth 7: You can lose the weight without a drastic lifestyle change–
If you are drastically overweight, then your lifestyle probably was not so healthy before. Of course you have to change your lifestyle if you want to change your body. Losing a large amount of weight is no easy task, but with a positive attitude and a commitment to change your life for the better, weight loss is an attainable goal.

Can Phentermine Diet Pills Help You Lose Weight ?

Wellness No Comments

Phentermine diet pills have been around for a long time. The FDA (Food and Drug Administration) originally approved it for market back in 1959 as an appetite suppressant.

It works like this: It uses methampetamine, a constitutional isomer, as a central acting stimulant. This releases neutransmitters in the brain, such as dopamine, adrenalin, and noradrenaline. What this means to you is that by stimulating certain neuron bundles your brain has been signaled to its fight or flight response. When this occurs your body stops its hunger trigger. Therefore your appetite is suppressed because the brain is not receiving a hunger signal.

Phentermine diet pills are currently sold under two brand names, Adipex and Ionamin. Gate Pharmaceuticals produces Adipex. Celltech produces Ionamin. The differences between the two are debatable. Ionamin is in a resin matrix and is time released and said to last longer with milder affects. Adipex effects last between 10-12 hours. At one time it was also manufactured under the name Fastin but in 1998 it was withdrawn from market by it manufacturer, SK-Beecham. It is also available as a generic just named phentermine.

These diet pills are available in three forms, tablets, capsules, and resin capsules. They should be taken once a day prior to breakfast, on an empty stomach. Do not take late in the day as it does act like a stimulant and may disrupt your normal sleeping patterns. Do not break, crush or chew tablets.

Most patients start out with an average dose of 30mgs a day, but since there is no standard dose for Phentermine diet pills, consult your doctor before you begin taking them. Children under the age of 16 should not take it.

It is generally well tolerated by most people when used responsively. It is now available online, giving you anonymity for your purchase. It accounts for 50% of all prescribed appetite suppressants.

If you have certain health conditions, such as Glaucoma or high blood pressure you should consult your doctor before you begin. Do not mix with other weight loss diet pills. Although it is recommended for a short-term treatment, six to twelve weeks. It has also been shown in studies to remain effective in a 36-week trial.

Phentermine’s success as weight loss supplement is due, in part, to the fact that it has been approved by the FDA longer than any other appetite suppressant drug, it is also cheaper. This diet pill is usually administered to the severely obese. It is recommended for people with a body mass index of 28 or higher.

As with any prescription drugs there may be side effects including but not limited to increased alertness or heart rate. The most common side effects like, dry mouth, blurred vision and sleeplessness usually only occur the within the first few days of beginning the medication while your body adjust to the medication. Never take a higher dose than prescribed by your doctor, as it could become habit forming.

However, remember that in order to succeed with any healthy weight loss program, it is recommended that you eat a well balanced diet and exercise.
