The writing desk has long been a sign of aristocratic or refined taste. While modern designs of writing desks have changed to accommodate the changes in technology, antique writing desks have long been considered wonderful pieces of furniture that hinted at sophistication while also working in a practical manner for the owner.
Writing desks also worked as a compact office, with everything needed in one area. In the old times these were specifically designed for individuals who were writing letters by hand, though because of the changes in technology many of these desks also double as computer (or at the very least, laptop) desks now.
Many of the old school writing desks will have roll top covers, while many modern styles of writing desks are simpler, without the roll top. Individuals who want a desk that is aesthetically pleasing will often times go for the roll top writing desks since that cover allows for an easy way of hiding private work from public viewing while adding a pleasing aesthetic elegance.
Most of the oldest antique writing desks are English, and were manufactured in England following the Restoration in the late 1600s. Oak and walnut are the two most common used for these pieces of antique furniture, as they were the most common wood available at the time, with Walnut the trendy pick of that age.
If you’re looking for a modern writing desk, there are several questions you will want to ask yourself. Are you looking for function, or do you care more about form? Do you like the old styles of furniture and desks, or do you like something much more simple and modern? How much are you willing to spend for the perfect writing desk? Are you looking for one where you can use your computer or laptop, as well?
All these questions make a major difference in determining what type of furniture you will want to look at purchasing. A good writing desk to use a laptop on that will fit in the bedroom is far different from a desk that will go out in the study and will act as a good looking piece of furniture to fit in with an all wood office.
There are plenty of places to look over literally hundreds of different choices. This is another good idea of what specifically you’re looking for before searching, so you’re not overwhelmed. The perfect writing desk is out there somewhere for you, now you just need to find it!

How do you know if a kitchen spice rack is right for you and your kitchen? There are a few questions that you need to ask yourself to determine if you need one or not.
The easiest question to ask yourself is, when cooking doesn’t finding the right spice container take too long? Let’s face it when cooking, hunting through cabinets and drawers looking for that ingredient you need is not optimal. Kitchen spice racks will help organize your spices and keep them in one location in your kitchen. You will no longer have to search through your cluttered cabinets and drawers while looking for what you need. The spice rack will also free up valuable storage space in those cabinets and drawers since your spices will be neatly organized somewhere else in your kitchen. There are many different kinds of kitchen spice racks out there such as mounted wall spice racks, hanging spice racks, countertop spice and others. There is a spice rack available for every type of kitchen out there. This also means that there is a very large selection to choose from. Spend time determining which spice rack is the best for you based on available storage space in your kitchen.
Another reason you may need a spice rack is so all your spices are properly labeled. Most store bought kitchen spices come in similar jars with spice labels that look very similar to one another. Create or buy labels that easily identify the spice you so can access it quickly. Many specialty store bought kitchen spices racks come with the included spices and spice labels. Creating your own labels on the other hand is really quite easy. It allows you to add some style to your spice rack which can compliment your overall kitchen design.
If you don’t already own a kitchen spice rack, most likely all your spices are stored in different containers. Your spice containers are probably made up of glass spice jars, plastic bottles or even plastic bags and Tupperware containers. Let a kitchen spice rack store your spices in a uniform container system so that everything looks neat and tidy. You will no longer run the risk of adding an incorrect spice to your dish and ruining it. Clearly marked spice labels make it a cinch to add spices while cooking.
Spice racks aren’t for everyone, but if you cook regularly and use spices often, then a kitchen spice rack is a necessity for your kitchen. You will realize the benefits of owning one immediately.

Air conditioning and AC compressors have become a necessity in our modern world. Global warming and the highly unpredictable weather systems nowadays makes it imperative for everyone to have their bedrooms, if not the whole house, air conditioned. Though AC units are still expensive today, they are more accessible to the masses, and as a result, more and more people are installing this equipment in their homes.
The quality of the air conditioning machines is always dependent upon the type of AC compressors contained in the units. As well, the life of each of your units is dependent upon how well the air compressor system is maintained. When the compressor or any of the compressor parts need to be replaced, you should be able to find the right service center to purchase what you need.
The first thing you should do when you find that you need to replace the AC compressor is to identify the particulars. This is done by writing down the model specifications, serial numbers and other details, such as the tonnage of the AC unit, etc. These specifications are normally embossed on the body of the machine at the back or on one side.
You could make use of the AC manual if you still have it, to learn the exact location of the compressor. The next step is to identify the closest location of the service center or the air compressor manufacturer and ask them about the possibility of replacing the compressor or compressor parts, as required.
In most cases, unless the models has gone off the market, the manufacturer will be able to provide the parts for their AC compressors, or a new compressor itself, if need be. In case you have trouble locating the compressor manufacturer, you could try looking up the air compressor sales person in your neighborhood who would be more than happy to help you solve your problem. The benefit here is that you might get a discount on the unit whether or not your machine in under warranty, plus guidance for finding certified service centers and technicians.
AC compressors, and or the parts, can be found easily through the manufacturer. This is because the compressor manufacturer is able to give you the authentic air compressor system at a discount (in most cases), besides ensuring that you have access to authorized personnel to have it re-installed.
This means you will get the best service possible, at the least cost and trouble. Considering that the compressor is the most important component in the air conditioner, you need to be sure you get the best.

Furniture is something that has undergone a great deal of changes since the dawn of civilisation; many new pieces have been added, defunct models discarded and the lasting pieces such as chairs, tables and beds have been subjected to innumerable design updates. In the latter half of the 20th century, furniture underwent its most recent and poignant design change with the onslaught of contemporary designers. These contemporary designers tried to shift the focus of furniture design from purely functional and traditional in aspect to encompass a smoother, utilitarian and yet more aesthetically pleasing creation.
As these furniture designers took all manner of furniture to new levels using new materials, new designs and creative innovations, sofas in particular were the feature of the new sitting room. Sofas have, traditionally speaking and in modern times, been the feature furniture of most sets of furniture in the sitting room, and because of this the new contemporary designs have been the central factor in design changes throughout the entire home. The sofa is and always has been the main attraction of any sitting room; guests are put at ease, homeowners can sit down and relax, and virtually any human or pet can become very comfortable all in one long seating area.
Contemporary sofas are sleeker and more focused on the aspect of comfort and innovation than their traditional predecessors. This has benefitted homeowners not only because of a newfound design appreciation and freedom, but because these contemporary sofas are often multifunctional or more able to fit any given space. The traditional woman, in relation to this furniture evolution, was a housewife in charge of maintaining the home, looking after the children and general running of household staff or individual house cleaning. She would have been responsible for a great deal of tasks throughout the day, and her relationship with the home’s main sofas would have been to keep them spotless and guest-ready at every moment; her own seat may have been a chair in a different corner of the room.
As sofas were modernised, the role of the woman shifted a great deal as society itself changed and moved forward toward a less male-oriented workplace. Women are still responsible for the home in most households; however the expectations of them are less strict and less focused on being respectable and wealthy in the neighbourhood or city. The modern home features contemporary sofas that reflect this shifted expectation and instead focus more on the close maternal care of children and family; sofas are more comfortable, more accommodating and more flexible; for example the sofa-bed allows women to deal with space problems while still providing plenty of seating space.
Women’s roles in the home have indeed closely followed the evolution of the modern sofa.

As the main home care provider, women were traditionally called upon to deal with cooking, cleaning, overseeing other household chores and also making sure that their homes were presentable and respectable. Not only was an untidy or unclean home something to avoid, but the quality of the contents were something to admire and show off humbly to guests. Display cabinets played a smaller role in the traditional home than they do in the modern home because it was the quality of furniture itself and larger items on display that were gauged for presentation value and observed by visitors to the home.
Regardless of this fact, women were still in the habit of displaying their treasures throughout the house to give a luxurious atmosphere and show off their status in society. Display cabinets were used sparingly except in the case of a very valuable item, in which case it was held under lock and key and only visible through the glass. In the modern home, women have shifted their roles in many cases from the primary home carer to a member of the workforce coupled with parenthood. Although equal opportunity has been widely accepted and implemented into modern society, it has not changed the fact that the majority of households favour women as the primary childcare parent and homemaker; this fact persists despite many women holding outside jobs.
The difference between the traditional and modern woman in the home is that the former had little choice when it came to her role in society and the home; the latter is under less pressure to keep the home pristine, perfect and reflective of a good standing in society. Instead, her concerns are more focused on the emotional well being of her family, ensuring that she can contribute financially if needed, and ultimately doing something fulfilling with her life. With this new perspective, the display cabinet has taken on a slightly different role in the modern home.
Now display cabinets are less likely to be found in a family home with young children, for the obvious reason that anything breakable does not mix well with small, speedy and energetic people.
Instead, they are more likely to be found in the homes of couples whose children have grown and left home. These cabinets hold a variety of treasures. Unlike traditional display cabinets and items, modern display cabinets are more likely to hold a myriad of family pictures, random items crafted by children and grandchildren and given as gifts, antiques like teacups, and of course any other items of high monetary or sentimental value. Women have realised the power of the display cabinet to actually reflect upon themselves and their families in a non-imposing way.

Still don’t think that a spice rack is for you? Why not consider the benefits that come with owning a kitchen spice rack.
The first major benefit is the organization of all your spices. Most kitchens have spices all over in many different types of containers from jars to bins to cookie jars and even plastic bags. You can also find spice racks in many different sizes and shapes, there are magnetic spice racks, hanging spice racks, wrought iron spice racks and even carousel spice racks. Each type of spice rack provides for a different location and function for your kitchen. You no longer need to take up valuable kitchen counter space for all your loose spice containers. Before you get a spice rack, determine where in your kitchen you want it to be located so that you can find the right rack for you.
Another benefit is durability. Kitchen spice racks are designed to last a long time of cared for correctly. Cleaning a kitchen spice rack is as easy as just wiping it down with a damp rag to make sure that you remove dust and other items that may adhere to the rack. Cleaning the rack occasionally will make sure that your spice rack will be around for a long while.
A third benefit is the natural benefits of spices. For example, Peppermint can act as a decongestant to help clear your sinuses up if you have caught a cold. Cinnamon is believed to regulate blood sugar which in turn can help prevent diabetes. Rosemary is a natural blood thinner, which can help with the onset of headaches. The thinning blood properties are similar to the way aspirin works to help stop the pain of headaches.
A final benefit of getting a kitchen spice rack is simply the ease of using one. Having all your spices in one location while cooking makes it so much easier then hunting around for that spice that you need but can’t find. With a spice rack, you can put the spices that are used most often in the front of the rack and the least used spices in the back of the rack. You can also build your spice rack with your own spices so you don’t have spices in the rack that you will never ever use.
What ever spice rack you decide on getting, make sure that it fits the style of your kitchen. If you are an avid cooker having a kitchen spice rack is a must, and getting all these benefits make your spice rack purchase even better.

In each interior intended for a particular space at your house, there is always a light fixture that will match the ambiance that you would want to obtain. This is also to enhance its beauty since any illumination will give much power over it. Much more when an Antique brass chandelier will be placed for embellishment. Actually, choosing over the wide selection available can be very overwhelming since there is the Capiz shell, Wrought iron, Murano glass or Crystal candle that will compete in the market.
Like all the others, an Antique brass chandelier has its own unique characteristic that cannot be copied by any of its kind. It has this tendency to feel more grand yet grounded. It also has this fragile nature but it will seemingly say that if you will use me, you will for sure have a great time. Another is that, it will grant you functional longevity because I am durable. Well, of course, you can never hear it directly because yes, it is tangible, but it is not any manner a living thing.
An Antique brass chandelier is understood to be made of metal that will provide that complimentary and temperate feeling. It comes in a vast array of panache such as the Mission to Modern. Even if the setting is more on the futuristic period, similar as that of the Jetsons family, it will still go well with it. At this contemporary juncture, Minimalist and Swedish flair are considered vogue. You can always browse online so you can acquire terrific ideas on what specific kind will go perfectly with your furnitures. There are some that sell it in a package to avoid the hassle but if you are into the eclectic side, a good suggestion would be is to purchase goods individually.
What makes an Antique brass chandelier very practical is that it only requires occasional cleaning. You only need to gently wipe it by soaking a cloth in soapy water then polish it in order to keep it shiny once again. This is very ideal for those that are rubbing elbows in the urban jungle where you need to be in a fast- paced mode. This is also intended for short maintenance since schedules can get all crammed up due to office work.
To take good care of such light fixture, moisture should be avoided because it will result to rust thus, the aftermath get so ugly. You just have to make sure that the area where you would it install it is nice and dry. It is also not idyllic to be put up in the outdoors unless you do not mind the worn- out features. As it grow in years, the more it will appear attractive as it develops that charming patina.

There is nothing more appealing for your home that outdoor furniture, even though exposure to the always-changing climate may deteriorate it faster than any other furniture.
Whether you are the owner of outdoor furniture or a buyer willing to get some items for your garden or yard, there are a few rules that you must keep in mind to prolong both the useful life of furniture and it’s appearance.
Outdoor furniture is usually expensive and hard to replace on a yearly basis so make sure to give it proper cleaning and care according to the instructions included by the manufacturer.
However, many people purchase second hand furniture that does not always include a cleaning guide or in the best of the cases, such direction are lost overtime. There is nothing to worry about because cleaning and maintenance of outdoor furniture is easy.
The first rule is keep the manufacturer’s instructions in a safe place, but if you have lost the information, keep in mind that almost all outdoor furniture can be cleaned with soap and water.
Aluminum furniture resists rust and water, but it needs frequent washings to be kept in good shape. Heavy furniture and some outdoor structures may require a pressure washer, although, they should be used at the lower setting.
Hammocks should be taken down if your do not use them on a daily or weekly basis and stored under a protected storage area. Regardless of the material, hammocks are decolorized by sunlight, shrink by continuous rains, and the fibers deteriorate by other climate changes.
Wash them with detergent and water, rinsing well with cold water and let it dry in the sun before placing the hammock back in their frame. Furniture with fabric or acrylic cushions should also be washed in same manner, periodically.
Umbrellas usually require some attention after being in storage for a long time. Wash their covers and keep frame joints well oiled. If you have one of those costly umbrellas with a wooden-frame, a paste wax can help you for maintenance and shine preservation.
If you have furniture made of plastic resin, a simple cleaning routine will be enough since this material is extremely durable and the only one that is weather resistant. Even though it is weather resistant discoloration or yellowing may occur after continuous sun exposure.
Clean your plastic resin furniture with a cloth or sponge dipped in waster with a non-abrasive all purpose cleaner or glass cleaner. If there is not much dirt or dust accumulated, wiping gently is usually enough.
Finally, if you have outdoor-wooden furniture pay attention to the coat, making sure it has an exterior-grade varnish that supports weather and cleaners. Use soapy water for cleaning, rinse with a wet cloth, and dry immediately, making sure to store this furniture indoors during winter.

There is nothing like getting up early on a Saturday morning and scouting out the neighborhood for garage sales. As the old adage states, “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure.” Often, when seeking to find a bargain, or simply the enjoyment of rummaging through other peoples possessions or sometimes finding a vintage item of great worth, all proves to be a great incentive and exciting way to spend a Saturday morning.
Garage sales offer a number of advantages not only to the shopper, but to the seller as well. One of the advantages of conducting garage sales is the opportunity to get rid of items that have been gathering dust around your home. Another advantage of conducting garage sales is the opportunity to generate income from items that may have been earmarked for the trash or given as a donation to the local not-for-profit thrift store.
In order for garage sales to be profitable it may be useful to incorporate three specific factors. Those factors include the need to advertise, displaying the items properly and being prepared.
Advertise
In order to get buyers to your garage sales, it is important to let them know that you have a garage sale that will be taking place. This advertisement can be accomplished in a number of ways.
One of the most effective ways of advertising your garage sales is by placing an advertisement in the classified section of your local newspaper. The sales representative at the paper will ask you all of the pertinent questions that need to be included. These questions include the date, time, address and a sampling of the items that you will be selling.
Another way to advertise your garage sales are through a weekly newspaper that is specifically designed with classified ads in mind. One other effective way of advertising your garage sales is by placing posters at busy intersections that indicate that a garage sale is in process. Also, on this poster, your address should be included.
One caution should be mentioned in regards to putting up posters or makeshift signs at these intersections. The family having the garage sale should check with local ordinances that may prohibit the posting of such signs.
Display The Items Properly
To meet the needs of those buyers that will be flocking to your garage sales, it is important that you have the items displayed properly. Suggestions of properly displaying your items for sale include the removing of the items from boxes and put them on display. Another suggestion would be to lay down a blanket on the garage floor or out on the driveway and display certain items. These items could include paperbacks, magazines or other such inexpensive items.
If you will be offering clothing as part of your inventory, you can simply string a rope or clothesline from point a to point b. Once securely fastened, just simply hang the clothes on this makeshift clothes rack.
Also, as part of the displaying process, it may be beneficial to tag each item with the price that you are asking. This will save a lot of time and help to minimize your customers from continually asking how much a certain item is.
Be Prepared
In preparation for your garage sales it is highly recommended that you have everything ready to go the night before. If you have ever conducted a garage sale you know from experience that people will begin to start their shopping very early in the day. Therefore, once you open the garage door and start displaying the items, you are not given much time from that point to when your customers first arrive.
Also, it is important to have petty cash available so that you can provide the appropriate change back to your customers. In addition, if selling electrical goods, it is important to have access to electricity so that the potential customer can test out the electrical items you have for sale.

Traditionally, barns were wooden structures used to house the various animals and supplies needed to run a farm. Now, however, more and more people are choosing to use metal barns instead of those made of wood. There are several advantages to using a metal barn as opposed to a wooden one, some of which are outlined below.
First, metal buildings have proven to be quite cost-effective. There are several reason for this, the main one being the lack of maintenance needed to keep the structure in good working order. They are also cheaper to build, as steel is the least expensive method for erecting such a structure. They are also not susceptible to pests such as termites so this also cuts down on the potential cost of the upkeep as well.
Another benefit of using a metal structure for a barn as opposed to one made of wood is that they are able to better withstand fire, rain, snow, and natural disasters such as earthquakes. This can be especially important if you live in an area where these are or could be common occurrences.
Another advantage is the lower cost when adding space. Over time, you may decide you want to expand your barn, either to house more animals, or hold more equipment. If you choose a metal structure, you will be able to do so easily at a great rate. The construction is also much simpler, and takes considerably less time than adding onto a wooden barn.
Metal barns are also easy to accessorize as needed. For example, you may choose to add more windows to your structure, or to add heating and air conditioning. You will be able to do so quickly and easily, and will enjoy many of the same benefits by doing so that you would with a traditional wooden barn. Your options are endless.
When you begin looking for a company from which to purchase your barn, be sure you have researched your needs and have based them on your available budget. That way, you will be able to ask the right questions, and find a company that will provide you with a structure that will really work for you. Remember, the more you know, the better off you’ll be in the long run. Find out what has worked for other people so that you can get an idea of what might fit your needs. Be sure you are constructing a barn that will last, while also leaving room for any expansion or updates you may need in the future.
Future Metal Buildings are based on the strongest architectural design ever conceived, the arch.

There are many benefits of owning your own sauna. Besides the various health advantages, they can also provide hours of relaxation and enjoyment. These days they are even easier to acquire, as you can build them yourself.
Because saunas now come in pre-fabricated kits, doing it yourself is now easier than ever. There are many options available for both in-door and out-door saunas, and benefits to building both. The steps are simple.
First, you will need to decide what type of sauna you wish to build. If you are purchasing it for health benefits, especially if it has been recommended by a physician, you will want to be sure you buy the kind that will best suit your needs. When purchasing your sauna kit, you should take into consideration where it will be installed. Location is crucial, since it can also help you determine the size of the sauna you will buy as well.
After you have chosen a location and purchased your pre-fab sauna kit, you will begin the building process. Start by installing the floor and walls. You will have to make sure the sauna is properly wired and insolated. Once you have constructed the sauna, you will need to add the doors. You will then be able to add the benches, heaters, lighting, and vents.
The kit will come complete with all the instructions you will need to construct your sauna. Since it is already pre-fabricated, you will not have to worry about cutting building materials to fit your needs, or whether or not it is too big or too small. This has already been accomplished for you. If you do have difficulty constructing your sauna, you might consider contacting the place of purchase. Someone there may be able to answer any technical questions you have, as well as provide you with additional sauna building tips.
While it is certainly possible to build your own sauna from scratch, a pre-fab kit can make the process much faster. It will eliminate having to measure building materials and figure schematics, and will still provide you with the advantages and enjoyment of having your very own sauna. You will also be given step-by-step instructions on caring for your sauna, which will help keep it working for a very long time. You will also have the satisfaction of knowing you built it yourself

There are many benefits to installing a sauna. Whether you decide to install one for health reasons, or just for the pure enjoyment and relaxation, justifying such a purchase should not be difficult.
There are also several types from which to choose. Where you install your sauna will most likely depend on the amount of space you have, and how much of it you can devote. You have two basic options when doing so, an indoor sauna, or an outdoor sauna. There are advantages to both, but installing an outdoor sauna may present you with more options.
There is currently a wide variety of pre-fabricated sauna kits available today, and many options where type and size are concerned. Since many outdoor saunas are also designed to be a pool house, you can own both in one unit. This can help take care of your pool needs in the summer, while providing you with the use of a sauna year-round.
Here, you will have a changing room that is separate from the rooms in your house, which will offer guests privacy at the pool area. This can also help to extend your pool season by allowing you to enjoy the heat of a sauna, and then cool down in the pool.
Most of the pre-fabricated kits are designed for easy assembly, and include all the parts you will need to build your outdoor sauna. The kits also come with detailed instructions that will help you along the way. It’s quick and easy.
Another benefit of having an outdoor sauna verses an indoor one is the money you can save. If you wish to add a sauna to your home, the cost will dramatically increase, and you will probably have to hire a contractor to do the job unless you are able to do it yourself. By purchasing a pre-fabricated sauna kit, you will be able to build it yourself. Even if you decide not to purchase the kit and just build one from scratch, it can still save you money in the long run.
Another benefit of owning an outdoor sauna is the privacy it will give you. If your sauna is connected to your house, you do not have to leave the building to enter it. You will still be subjected to the noisy activity taking place in your house, and probably won’t get the peace and quiet you need to relax. By installing an outdoor sauna, you will be able to enjoy the time you will have to yourself in a quiet, peaceful environment.

For a long time, if you wanted to enjoy the benefits of a sauna, you had to find a local gym or other facility that offered such luxuries. Many people often did this, as there are several health advantages associated with such comforts. In more recent years, however, it has become quite possible to add a sauna, or a sauna alternative to your own home.
While it is true that adding a sauna can be a major undertaking, it might not be as difficult as you think. Today, there are many different types of home kits available. These sauna kits come pre-fabricated, and are equipped with detailed instructions outlining what you need to know before you begin, and how to construct the actual sauna. The more difficult part is doing your homework before you begin.
Space is an important fact, as it will determine the size and possibly the type of sauna you decide to build. Fortunately, there are professionals who will be able to answer your questions so you know what you’re getting into before you begin.
You have many choices to make when building a home sauna. First, you will want to decide whether or not you want an indoor or outdoor sauna. There are benefits to having both, so it is advisable to research them carefully before making this decision. Second, you will need to decide whether you want a wet or dry sauna. Again, there are advantages to both, so it is important to learn what they are before getting started. Once you have made these decisions, you are ready to choose your sauna. From there, it is just a matter of constructing it. If you do not wish to build a sauna from a pre-fabricated kit, you might consider hiring contractors and builders who will customize it to your liking. That, however, can prove to be the biggest undertaking, as it gets expensive rather quickly. There are other sauna alternatives that might work for you if you do not wish to take on such a large project.
Many people have begun installing steam showers in their own bathrooms. This might be a viable alternative if you do not have sufficient space to build a sauna, do not have the funds, or would like your steam shower to be in a convenient, already constructed location. Like pre-fabricated sauna kits, steam showers are relatively easy to install. They are fully sealed enclosures that can be installed anywhere a conventional shower or bathtub would be placed, and give you some of the same benefits as an actual sauna. Like saunas, they produce steam, which makes you sweat, and therefore, rids your body of unwanted toxins. They are also relaxing, and can be just as enjoyable as a conventional sauna. They are considerably easier to install because they are in a structure that is already built, and they don’t take up too much room.
Whether you decide to install an actual sauna, or a steam shower or steam bath alternative, know both the risks and advantages of owning them. Know how to use them properly, and how they can benefit you. Remember, a little information goes a long way toward hours of enjoyment and relaxation, not to mention good health.

Antique lamps are a great look for any home or office. People appreciate the style of them and they can instantly add interest to any room. Antique lamps and reproductions of these can fit into many different style rooms.
When you buy these lamps you will want to know whether you are buying an authentic antique or a replica. Though for some consumers, whether it is an authentic antique or a replica is of little consequence, the distinction will impact the price you may want to pay.
Obviously, the most important thing when choosing these lamps is you want to find lamps you truly like. The look and feel of a lamp should match your style and taste, as well as the overall style of the room you plan to use the antique lamps in.
They can add a rustic feel, a classic feel, elegance, charm or whimsy depending on the room you are putting the lamps in and the style of the lamps you choose. These lamps can also be a good investment as they appreciate in value.
When shopping for antique lamps you can look online, at auctions and even at garage sales and yard sales to find the right lamps for your needs. If you plan to use the lamps, you will want to make sure they are up to standard in order to eliminate any safety concerns. You can bring antique lamps to an electrician to be looked at.
When you have the lamps looked at you will also want to find out what wattage light bulbs you should use in the lamp. Though many consumers do not think it is important to do this, you will find that it is safer and wiser to take the extra step and ensure you are using the right bulbs with your lamps.
If you are buying hanging lamps, make sure you place them in a safe place, and if buying floor lamps or table lamps you will want to make sure that there is a solid base and a flat surface so the lamp does not tip over and break.
Whether you are decorating a room for the first time or redecorating the room, antique lamps are a great addition that can be an instant focal point to any room. Light naturally captures attention and with the right lamps you can make a great statement about your room and your style.

A powered air mattress is a great addition to any family. Being able to quickly and efficiently blow up a mattress makes it a terrific investment for when family or friends visit or you take a trip or vacation.
Campers love these mattresses when they are going to a camp ground that offers a power source. It is quick to inflate and is much more comfortable than trying to sleep on the ground.
Families that have overnight guests can use a powered air mattress to make an instant guest bedroom for expected and unexpected overnight visitors. Rather than spending an hour trying to blow up a mattress with a hand pump, foot bump, or your own breath, you can use a powered air mattress.
A good night’s sleep cannot be overstated and that is why people use air mattresses rather than sleeping on hard floors, the outdoors, or even a lumpy or overly cramped couch. They come in sizes ranging from twin size to king size which makes them perfect for just about anyone.
The difference between a powered air mattress and a standard air mattress is in ease of use. Being able to blow up the air mattress by pressing a button is much easier and more efficient that the time and energy it takes to blow up an air mattress with a standard foot pump or hand pump and most mattresses are simply too big to try to blow up from your own breath!
When you buy a powered air mattress you want to make sure that you test it before you need it in order to ensure there are no leaks. Many air mattresses come with patch kits in case it does get a leak. In recent years the quality of air mattresses has improved dramatically resulting in more durable and more comfortable air mattresses than ever before.
As you research powered air mattresses online you will find a number of different options and stated purposes. Choose the air mattress that will fit your needs and provide you or your guests many nights of a comfortable sleep. They are easier to store and transport than ever before and since they come with their own powered-pump that can be set up in a matter of minutes virtually anywhere you have the empty space!
Turn any room into a guest room with a great powered air mattress.

Balloons have always been associated with a fun, carefree, and festive time. What better why to show that your party is a time to celebrate than having a balloon centerpiece or two around the room? Before you hire a professional to have all the fun, check out some of these hints and tricks for making your very own balloon centerpiece.
Fun, Floating Flower
An easy way to create a great centerpiece that incorporates festive balloons and fragrant flowers is to use this method. Simply choose a balloon that is a favorite color, fill it 1/3 of the way with water, place a fresh flower inside, and place ribbon, netting, or even tulle around the balloon. Make sure the central balloon is stationary, and watch the flower and water ebb and flow whenever the people at the table get up to dance. It truly is a beautiful and festive centerpiece.
Holiday Centerpieces
Another great way to create centerpieces using balloons is to place a small battery powered candle inside the balloon. Make sure the wattage of the candle is extremely low, and the balloon is inflated just enough to allow for a gentle glow over the table. Add a garland of flowers and ribbons to suit your taste, and you’ve got a great conversation piece as well as a great centerpiece. If you want to take it a step further, give the balloon and flowers a light spray with a white or silver glitter spray for that frosted look. It’s a simple idea that makes each centerpiece look like a work of art.
The Sky Is The Limit
If you want a spectacular look when creating your balloon centerpieces, you can’t go wrong with this idea. Take some long ribbons, pre-cut, and attach one end of the ribbons to the center of the table, either through weights or tape. Take the other ends and attach them to some balloons filled with helium gas. As the balloons rise and twist into the air, they create a great sight and conversation piece for your next party.
As you can see, these are but a few of the choices you have to make some very festive centerpieces using a few simple balloons, pieces of ribbon, or the occasional ring of flowers.
Its amazing what a few ribbons, balloons and a little imagination can do! In no time, you’ll come up with centerpieces that will be the talk of your party. Let your imagination run wild and you will come up with a truly unique centerpiece.

A window treatment of curtains can add a special touch to a room or a window and can also add a measure of privacy. Whatever you end up choosing, a window treatment of curtains can not only add some color or texture to a room, but also can sometimes solve problems you may have with a window.
A Wide Selection
There are many types of curtains and drapes to choose from. One of the most common is the box pleated curtain or drape. These curtains are pre-gathered into pleats at the top of the curtain so that they always have a neat, tailored look. These can be a little more expensive than just a plain curtain, but the extra fullness can add a nice touch to your window treatment.
Another type of curtain is a valance. A valance is a short piece of fabric that only decorates the top fourth of the window. They can come in many colors and patterns, and are usually used along with blinds so that there is still a way to close the window off and have some privacy. If drapes are like a long skirt, a valance is closer to a tutu.
Drapes and curtains can also be used to completely block out light for those who need it completely dark or sleep during the day. These are known as blackout curtains and have a special liner that does not allow any light to penetrate through the curtain itself. The only light you may need to worry about may come around the edge or top of the curtain.
Thermal curtains are a good energy saving method. These keep the temperature more constant in the house, whether you want it cool or warm. This can save on energy costs since cool or warm air is not lost out through the window.
Thermal curtains and blackout curtains can also be good sources for noise blockage. If you live on a noisy street or have to sleep during the day, sometimes outside noise can be disturbing. These types of curtains can help reduce the noise level as well as the light level.
A simpler type of curtain is a cafe curtain, which you usually find in a kitchen. These curtains are usually of light material and often have decorative designs that go well in a kitchen. These are the kinds of curtains you often imagine blowing in the wind in a kitchen.
Whatever type of curtain or window treatment you need, finding one that you like and that goes with your decor can sometimes be a challenge. In addition, if you need bigger drapes or curtains, they can cost quite a bit. However, drapes and curtains are often a longer term investment since you don’t usually change them out every year, so find the ones that you like, and hopefully you will soon have a lovely window area to enjoy.

Streamlined polished chrome bases. Frosted white glass shades. Clusters of filaments lit by LEDs. These are not your father’s table lamps! Indeed, table lamps have come a long way since any old light bulb stuck on a piece of wood with a dusty shade could be passed off as a fashionable piece of home decor.
Today’s contemporary table lamps are works of art. New lamps tend to be built from metal and glass materials. Most lamps adopt a minimalist color scheme. The bases are often black or grey or white, with the designer letting the polished or brushed look of the metal come through to the final product. The lamps are then topped off with a white or cream shade to complete the look. On the other end of the scale, designers - using the same materials - have taken advantage of technological advances to create innovative new table lamps. Using these new production techniques, designers can use the same materials to create colorful and playful table lamps. One trend is making table lamps look like other objects, such as a glowing block of ice or even Chinese takeout boxes. These designs are perfect for children, or the young at heart.
Aside from the materials and the color schemes, designers generally create table lamps with simple, pared down designs. The emphasis is on sleek and streamlined looks, with simple and unbroken lines. Especially notable is the movement away from traditional table lamp designs, with a base, stem and light shade. Indeed, the creation of new materials with unique lighting abilities has allowed designers to experiment with amazing new designs. And at the farthest point from simple designs are the trend towards table lamps that more closely resemble tabletop chandeliers with the use of glowing strands of plastic and light.
All this focus on aesthetics is not to imply at all that this new crop of lamps is not highly functional. In fact, it is exactly the opposite. Functionality is a central concern. Modern table lamps take exceptional pride in providing the very best light for reading or writing. This means creating an adjustable light that can either focus or diffuse the light, depending on your needs.
Contemporary table lamps have entered an exciting creative phase, spurred on by the development of new materials, and the participation of countless young and exciting designers. If you are looking to update your interior design, a contemporary table lamp can be an important starting point for any changes.

Have small living quarters and trying to figure out where to sleep at night? If so, you aren’t alone. There are many people who are living in cramped quarters, whether they are college students, have too many roommates, or just have more belongings than space available. So what do you choose to sleep on? A traditional bed, or a futon?
Choosing a Futon Bed
For these people, choosing a Futon bed is often a wise choice. The Futon bed has its origin in Japan, however the western style of Futons varies from the original version. In Japan, the bed mattress rests upon a Tatami mat and isn’t set upon a bed frame, as is the norm in the west. The Futon mattress also is folded and stored away during the day in Japan.
In the western countries, a Futon bed mattress is typically set upon a bed frame and the futon is used as both a bed and a couch. This makes the Futon a suitable choice for those who have very little living space and would like for their couch to double as a bed.
The Futon Mattress: Springless Beauty
The Japanese Futons use environmentally friendly mattresses that are comprised of cotton batting. They air out their mattresses by placing them in direct sunlight then beating them with a bamboo stick or tool. This is actually a very healthy practice as science is just now releasing the facts regarding how many germs and bacteria thrive on mattresses and pillows.
In Western countries, the Futon and its mattress are often inseparable. The mattress is not taken outside for daily airings nor stored away in closets. Like any other bed, the futon mattress remains on the bed frame. However, one thing is similar, and that is that most Western Futon mattresses are eco-friendly as well and are made with foam style batting. Though thicker than their Japanese counterparts, they are often springless mattresses. However, if you absolutely prefer a mattress made with springs, you can purchase a spring-filled mattress.
There are many benefits for choosing a Futon, along with the ability to save space, you can also substitute a Futon in a small guest room and have a wonderfully decorated room making the most out of your limited space. You can purchase a Futon in a number of different patterns and styles, making the Futon suitable for any guest room’s decor.
Understanding the importance of health, most people prefer to choose the all natural 100% cotton Futon mattresses, for these are deemed to be much healthier and environmentally friendly then the other synthetic and spring based mattresses.

If you have a room that is in need of a new look and you don’t want to invest in new carpet and furniture, try adding new window treatments, such as wood blinds or plantation shutters. Blinds and shutters provide excellent light blockage and privacy while creating a linear look. They can be combined with curtains, sheers or drapes for an interesting combination of textures and patterns. Keep in mind that the light shining through them will make their textures more distinct.
Wood blinds enhance the look of your home from the inside and also the outside. They lend a natural, warm look to any room. Because they can be matched to existing wood tones, they can enhance woodwork, cabinetry and furniture. Custom blinds can be crafted to suit the decor of any room. To avoid making your blinds the main focus of a room, try to match other surrounding tones.
The two primary types of wood used in wood blinds are ramin and bass. Generally, the preferred wood is bass because of its distinguished grain and strength. Bass also can easily be custom stained.
There are several slat widths available. The one-inch slats are preferable for small windows and French doors. Two-inch slats are more versatile and are well suited to any size and shape of window. They look more like plantation shutters. The larger slats allow more space to see through when open. Wood blinds can be constructed with no holes for rooms that need to be very dark.
Cordless binds are an option if you are concerned about the safety of small children and pets. Hold-down brackets are used to brace blinds in areas with wind and high traffic and also on surfaces that move, like doors. The ultimate convenience is the remote controlled blind for windows that are hard to reach; such as above a doorway or behind a large couch. With the touch of a button, blinds can be opened and closed or the entire blind can be raised. Anti-static properties, fabric tapes and UV control are also available.
Some other options are vertical blinds, which are most often used on sliding glass doors, and faux wood blinds, which are best suited in rooms with high humidity such as kitchens and bathrooms.
Faux wood blinds are designed to look like real wood, but are made from other less expensive materials. Generally, they are made from PVC, a plastic polymer, or a combination of hardwood and a plastic base. These combination, or composite, blinds are lighter in weight than PVC blinds but are slightly more expensive.
Besides price, other advantages of faux wood blinds are their strength and durability. They are simple to clean and do not wear, fade or crack easily. Added UV protection can prevent excess damage where sun exposure is high. They are also more tolerant of extreme temperatures, both heat and cold, than real wood. They are suitable for any location.
Wood blinds are available at many retail home improvement outlets. Considerable cost savings may be achieved by ordering standard or custom blinds on any one of the numerous dealer sites on the web.

Every home has a coffee table and it is normally the centre of attraction in any room where there happens to be one. Pick the wrong one for your room and it will look untidy and out of place. Pick the one for your room and it’ll will look warm and welcoming to all the visitors who come to see you. Making sure you have the perfect table for your room is, therefore, essential if you want to make just the right impression. The following are a few things you should be thinking of when you’re looking to buy a coffee table for your room:
1. How big is the room? A coffee table should be noticeable in any room where there is one. It should not, however, over bear the room. As such, before you purchase for a room you need to take some measurements of the room itself and then decide how big you want the table to be in that room. Once you have done this, you can keep a record of the maximum measurements you want the coffee table to be.
2. What shape do you want? Coffee tables tend to come in rectangle or circle shapes, but there is no reason why you cannot choose to have a square or triangle coffee table. You need to be thinking about the shape you want the coffee table to be in and how this will look in the room once it is in there.
3. What material are you using? There are lots of different types of woods and they can either be light or dark in colour. While a dark table may look really nice, it may look out of place in your room if there is nothing else in the room that sets it off. Likewise, a light coffee table. Furthermore, if you have a particular type of wood, such as mahogany, but nothing to work it off, it’ll look out of place in the room even if it is the most beautiful thing you have ever seen when buying it in the shop.
4. What’s the purpose? Different coffee tables have different purposes. Some are used exactly for that and nothing else. Others are also used to display magazines and books so visitors to the room can have a quick read while waiting for you. So, you need to give some thought as to what the purpose of the coffee table is going to be.
5. Do you need any safety aspects? Coffee tables can come with solid tops or glass tops. They can have square angled corners or round angled corners. They can have wheels to be portable or they can be stationary. In fact, there are almost as many different features as there are coffee tables. What you, however, may also need to consider is how safe your coffee table needs to be. For example, if you have young children it may not be advisable for you to have a glass top and sharp square corners, otherwise you may need to put the coffee table in the garage until the children grow up.

There is nothing worse than seeing your prized possesion with a spot or a mark on it and you do not know how it got there or what to do. This article will help you by giving you tips, suggestions and good ideas to take care of this beloved object.
To start with, your hand made Oriental rug or your kilim can survive for decades depending on a number of factors. One determining factor is the quality of the rug you have, if it is a good quality one and you treat it with care, it will surely last a lot more than if your rug or kilim is of an inferior quality. Moreover, there is large number of damages which typically affect rugs, by learning about them and taking the necessary measures to prevent them from happening you will ensure a long lasting life for your treasured rug.
The most common damages are the following ones:
Water damage: It is one of the most frequent. People usually place potted plants over rugs. Once the plant is watered the pot leaks and the rug under the pot remains constantly wet. In a few weeks the foundation of the rug weakens in such a way that it can be easily broken into pieces. So, if you are going to place a potted plant avoid putting it directly over the rug, you can use a stool or some kind of support so as to keep the humidity of the plant away from the rug. Just in case the advice comes too late and you notice that the rug is already wet you should remove it as soon as possible, clean it and allow it to dry completely to avoid damages in the foundation. Another problem related to water is triggered by damp floors (often if the floor is made of cement). Maybe the floor seems to be dry, but just a bit of moisture can produce the proliferation of micro-organisms which can spoil the foundation of the rug.
Moth damage: These insects do not eat rugs, but their larvae consume the fibers and even the knots of the rugs. They prefer to live in areas under furniture, where it is not always vacuumed or in areas with little traffic. In order to avert this, vacuum the surface once a week and several times a year vacuum the back side, the pad and the floor. For areas which are difficult to reach with the vacuum cleaner spray a proper household insecticide for moths. Besides, do not rely on moth crystals, balls or flakes since they are not effective to kill moths, they just repel them.
Dogs and cats damage: Puppies usually chew rugs. To avoid this sprinkle some moth flakes under the rug. Likewise, cats love sharpening their claws on rugs. Though it sounds a bit absurd, the best prevention is to try to control the cats’ activities.
Sun damage: The light of the sun can affect and diminish the colors of the rug. If this is your case, try to avoid direct exposure to sunlight or rotate the rug so as to make the color equal in its entire surface.
Vacuum cleaner damage: Cleaning your rug using a vacuum cleaner is a positive practice but be cautious if your cleaner is equipped with a power brush since a raking effect can be caused on the surface. It is better to use just the plain vacuum nozzle.
Chemical damage: Sometimes rug cleaners bleach the fringe before delivering it. Although the fringe looks nice after that, the process and the substance used weakens the fibers destroying them little by little. If you still want to have white fringes you could dilute the solution used for bleaching.
Storage: If you are about to store your rug, make sure you clean it, spray it with some insecticide and wrap it in plastic before doing it. Most kinds of damages are not difficult to repair, but prevention is better (cheaper and easier) than restoration. If you follow these hints as well as inspecting your rug often and cleaning it only when it is needed your rug will be part of your house for ages.
If you do get a spot or an area that is spilled upon here is what you can do:
Blot, never scrub spots on a rug. Scrubbing can damage the nap on a carpet. Test all spotting products in an inconspicuous area first and look for color change. If the color bleeds or you are unsure how to proceed consult a professional. Remove as much of the spill as possible before adding spotting products. Work from the outer edges of a spot to the center. Never saturate a spotting area with a liquid. Only spot with small amounts of cleaning products. Drying small areas can be accomplished with a hair dryer with the heat setting off.

Everyone hates to shop for a mattress. For most of us the last time we purchased a mattress was fifteen or twenty years ago. Prices have risen astronomically since then. Like car buying, we get sticker shock when we see what lofty premiums bedding stores have on their merchandise. We freak out when we see how much they cost. I could almost buy a good used car for the price of some new beds.
Have you looked in the yellow pages and marveled at all the places that sell mattresses and foundations, not to mention headboards, footboards, frames, futons, pillows and just about anything you else you could think of to get you a good night’s sleep. If that’s not enough, you have to decide on such things as memory foam, rubber foam, foam encased sides, edge guards, pocket coils innersprings, hypoallergenic products, and even body pressure imaging systems, it’s no wonder that selecting a mattress can be confusing. Let’s take a look at the often complex task of selecting just the right mattress for you.
The most important thing you can do to begin your mattress shopping is to try the mattress out. Most bedding stores don’t allow you to take the bed home and try it for a month, so it’s up to you to do the footwork necessary to insure pleasant slumbering. There are bedding store with comfort exchange policies. If you find one, take advantage of it.
First of all, if you’re calorie challenged and weigh 400 pounds, don’t expect a two hundred dollar mattress to last you ten years without collapsing. It just won’t happen! Use common sense and find a mattress tough enough to withstand the weight night after night, year after year. Price alone should be an indicator of performance, but alas, that is not always true. Some folks say that there isn’t much difference between a cheap mattress and a more costly one. As with almost anything else, you really do get what you pay for.
Shopping for a mattress should be fun! For most people though, it is a grueling test of physical and mental endurance. Let’s face it, after you’ve looked at three or four mattresses, your eyes are starting to glaze over. They all look so much alike; it’s hard to choose a mattress that will give you years of restful, peaceful sleep!
Lay down on the beds you are trying out. Don’t just walk around the beds looking at the price tags and pushing the mattress with your hands. Don’t do that! It’s not going to bite you! You won’t be standing on your hands when you sleep, so quit squeezing the mattress. Doing that won’t tell your body how the mattress feels.
Also, do not lay down on the mattress with your legs hanging over the side. You don’t sleep that way, so don’t do it when mattress shopping. Laying this way creates a strain on your back muscles. Your back will start hurting and you’ll start thinking it’s the bed’s fault that’s causing your back pain and not the weird way you are lying. Give the bed a chance!

Kilims, which are much rather ancient than their relative the carpet, are a kind of flat-weave rug. These rugs are originally produced in a tribal environment. Unfortunately there is no certain information on how ancient kilims are; however archaeologists have found evidence of their existence on the walls of Egyptian tombs dating from 1700-1800 BC.
However incredible it may sound, it is even more amazing to know that some of the motifs found in such rugs seem to be quite more antique than the weaving itself. The designs of a kilim tend to be of a geometric shape and often include several symbolic motifs. These motifs which are bound to be found on kilims are copied in flat weaves all over the world from the tribes in the Atlas Mountains, stopping by the Afghan nomads to the Navajo Indians in the U.S.A. and the Indians of the Andes in South America.
The universal motifs typically found in kilims hide an extremely rich language based on ancient beliefs, legends and mythology. However, local variations may be easily spotted on kilims according to the region and even village where they have been woven.
The most repeatedly occurring motifs in kilim rugs are the following:
The eye motif: Specially found in lots of Asian and African countries, the eye represents a charm against bad luck and misfortune coming from the malicious eye emitted by those who gaze at them with envy or ill purpose. Therefore, the different eye motifs seen in kilims are deliberately woven to give protection to the members of the household.
The rams horn motif: this is a symbol which dates from the Neolithic times. Besides this, evidence of this motif has also been found among the Egyptian and Phoenician cultures. In old Anatolian civilizations the rams horn was the symbol of the power of the gods. Nowadays in nomadic Turkish communities this represents the symbol of power and fertility, showing the particularity of being mostly related to male virility.
The bird motif: This symbolizes the endless fascination of humankind towards the idea of flying; therefore the bird motif reveals its meaning as that of freedom and the associated concept of good news brought from far away.
The wheat ear motif: This symbol represents the fertility of the earth and for this reason plenty and prosperity are two interrelated ideas often found in kilim rugs.
The pomegranate: Such motif is quite similar in meaning to that of the wheat ear motif because this fruit of paradise with its hundreds of seeds in the single fruit represented wealth and plenty. There was an ancient custom in which whenever a couple got married, pomegranate seeds were sprinkled in the home of the newlyweds so that they would be happy and have healthy children.
The spider motif: The spider motif bestows sacred significance because of its connection to the legend of Arachne, the Lydian woman who was turned into a spider by the Greek goddess Athena due to Arachnes boasting of her ability as a magnificent weaver.
The tree of life motif: This symbol is often displayed with its roots embedded in the earth beneath, and its branches reaching up into the sky. The evident mystical connotation shows a connection between mortal life and the spiritual world above portraying the immortality of the human soul.
The snake motif: The motif of the snake is deeply rooted to that of the tree of life motif since the snake is depicted as the guardian of the tree. This role may probably result from the annual snakes sloughing of their skin. Consequently, the snake represents rebirth and life energy.
The diamond shaped motif (hand on waist): This symbols meaning dates back to prehistory and it appears to be the stylized representation of a pregnant woman and expresses the wish of the woman who is weaving the kilim of bringing healthy children into the world.
To understand the meaning of the kilims motifs and their bright colors together with their intricate geometric patterns help to enhance their beauty and make them even more attractive to the buyers eyes.

The variations found in rugs and kilims around the world are amazing and beautiful. The color combinations present in a kilim or persian rug make it appealing to the eye and a wonderfully decorative work of art. Each color hides a meaning which contributesto it’s fascination.
Yellow: weld, vine leaves or pomegranate peel. produces muted gold
Brown : walnut shells or oak bark
Green: combination of weld and indigo
Purple: hollyhocks
Black: walnuts Larkspur: plant
Henna: leaves and flowers
An observation should be made regarding slight changes in color usually seen in older rugs for this happens when the weaver starts weaving with a yarn from a different dye lot than the one previously used .This peculiarity is common when working with natural dyes since it is quite difficult to get an exact color match. Fortunately, this condition does not affect the value of the rug. It may in fact increase it’s value.
It is very common on tribal rugs to see this variation in color and is a unique characteristic of hand made rugs. The exact “recipe” used by a particular rug maker was a closely guarded secret which passed from generation to generation, or sometimes died with the passage of time and the rug maker.
The nomads who made kilims could not produce a large batch of dye, therefore sometimes the color would vary from lot to lot in that way as well. Also the type and quality of wool was a factor in the final color result. Long ago dyers realized that as more wool was dyed in a single dyepot, colors became weaker and weaker. Dyers use this notion of depleted dyes to their advantage. The first dyeing produces a deep, strong color. Subsequent dyeings in the same dyepot produce lighter, softer colors
Synthetic Dyes: Aniline Dyes
Aniline dyes were speedily adopted in the carpet industry due to their low cost and easy-to-use characteristic. The use of them was not limited to a specific area but spread throughout the world. In the last years of the nineteenth century aniline dyes were strongly acidic which damaged the quality of the rug by destroying the natural oil in the wool causing the rug to wear off in no time. In addition, the colors ran when the kilim was washed or faded if the rug was exposed to sunlight. Because of these problems, aniline dyes are not used as much as they used to be. Nowadays they are used in the dyeing of inferior quality rugs.
If you do not know whether your precious kilim or persian style rug was aniline dyed. You should rub a damp cloth over the pile. If the rug was dyed with a good-quality vegetable or chemical dye it will not rub off onto the cloth, but if it does then your rug has been dyed with aniline.
Synthetic Dyes: Chrome Dyes At present, oriental rugs are dyed with Chrome dyes. In contrast to natural dyes, these are simpler to use, quite cheaper and their dye is much easier to match. Chrome dyes offer a greater range of shades and colors which are colorfast. The natural oils of the wool are not removed so the kilim will not be worn off as fast as an aniline dyed one.
Although chrome dyes are widely used, in the past there were also complaints with them because their colors were harsher than the hues of natural dyes. This was corrected by the implementation of a light chemical wash which is done to most rugs before being exported to ensure the richness of the rug.
Rugs which are dyed in this way can never achieve the soft hue of a rug which is dyed with a natural dye. The rug fades a bit over time, depending on it’s exposure to the sun and general use, but the color which it achieves as a result is warm and unobtainable in any other way. The next time you look at your treasured rug or kilim, think of how it was dyed and appreciate it’s beauty all the more. Kilims and rugs are wonderful to behold!

Cleaning carpet stains can sometimes be a very difficult task. Part of the reason is because when a stain first occurs, your first reaction is to pour every chemical on it that you have in your house to try to get it out. However, this can actually be counterproductive. You want to be careful what you apply to your carpet as different types of carpets have different carpet cleaning needs.
Cleaning carpet stains doesn’t have to be difficult. For simple stains, such as dirt, you can usually get the stain out with a good soap based cleaner. However, if the stain is stronger than that, say, pet stains, ketchup, wine, or ink, you may have to either rent a steam cleaning machine or call a professional carpet cleaning company to come and do the job for you.
A professional will usually steam clean your carpet. Steam cleaning carpet stains breaks the stain up by using very hot water. The drawback to cleaning carpet stains this way is that it leaves your carpet damp afterwards. This usually means that you can’t walk on it for some time. You also run the risk of mold and mildew developing in your house if it isn’t the correct temperature. Some people just don’t want to take this risk, so they choose to have their carpets cleaned using “dry” cleaning methods.
The dry chemical cleaning method uses certain chemicals, usually packed with certain enzymes, that break the stain up without having to get the carpet wet. The drawback to this method is that you can ruin your carpet if you don’t know what you’re doing. It’s best, if you’re going to use this method, to find the help of a professional so that you don’t do permanent
damage to your carpet.
Cleaning carpet stains doesn’t have to be an activity that causes a lot of anxiety. It all depends on what kind of stain you have. Any stain, be it pet stains or ink stains, can be removed. The trick is to apply whatever method you choose as soon as you can so that the substance doesn’t have time to reach the padding underneath, which is the reason most stains become
permanent. Don’t worry if something hits your carpet, there’s a method out there that will get that stain out so that you don’t have to find a new piece of furniture to cover it up. You can keep your carpet looking great for as long as you have it.

Floor rugs are not only underfoot, they are also underappreciated. They can be both decorative and functional without costing a lot of money. We’ve pulled together five benefits of decorating with floor rugs, and these are aren’t the only ones.
1. Rugs are a great way to add a splash of colour to a room and can be affordable enough that you change them around depending on the season. Think of thick and warm rugs for winter, and lightweight rugs for summer.
2. Protect your floors in high traffic areas from wear and tear, flooring is expensive to replace, so protecting it with some well-placed rugs can prolong the life of your investment. Common high traffic areas are: in front of the refrigerator and kitchen sink, in hallways, entrances, and in doorways. Take a look at the flooring in your home to see if it’s showing signs of wear in any of these areas and whether a rug could help to slow down this process.
3. Protect your flooring from pets and stains. Yes, we love our furry companions but they do take a toll on our floors, from unintentional spills and stains to pet hair getting embedded in carpet. Put a pet-friendly rug where your pet likes to lay down or play, preferably one that is easily washed. It will cut down on your house cleaning time and washing the rug regularly will help to control pet odours that would otherwise be in your carpets. The rug will also be a softer place for your pet to sleep instead of on the bare floor. Our cat loves to roll on the three rugs we have in our kitchen but won’t lay down anywhere else on the floor. Rugs placed in doorways will also help to catch some of the mud and dirt on your pets paws as they enter your home from outside.
4. Use rugs with a non-slip underside to help prevent falls on slippery floors. The non-slip underside is very important, otherwise your rug will go sliding with you! A great place to use them is in washrooms as well as on hardwood and ceramic floors. Be careful about putting them too close to the tops of stairways because they might be tripped on.
5. Rugs are a great way to protect your feet from cold ceramic or cement floors. Place them in areas where people will be standing or sitting for long periods of time such as in front of the kitchen sink, couches or chairs, as well as in the laundry room. Not only will your feet be warmer, but the cushioning from the rug will pamper your toes and you won’t need to hand out slippers to your guests!
With these thoughts in mind, take a look at your home and see if there are areas that can be improved with a well-placed floor rug. There are many sizes, colours and textures available and without a lot of searching you should be able to find a rug that is both attractive and functional.
