In the United States, a large number of home-owners only have a bathtub in their homes. Most bathtubs really aren’t just bathtubs; many also double as showers. As nice as it is to only have one bathroom fixture, especially one that can do two jobs, you may be looking for more. If you are looking to remodel your bathroom, you may want to think about purchasing yourself a new bathtub. Unfortunately, you will find that not all bathtubs double as showers; therefore, you may also be in the market for a new shower stall.
Perhaps, the most important thing to remember, when looking to buy a new shower stall, is the amount of space that you have available. If you are going from one bathtub to a bathtub and a standalone shower, there is a chance that you may be limited on space. If that is the case, you may find your options to be somewhat limited. That is unless you are planning on remodelling your entire bathroom. If you are planning on changing your entire bathroom around, it may be easier for you to find and purchase the shower stall of your choice, without having to worry about whether or not it will even fit in your bathroom.
Once you have decided that you would like to purchase a new bathroom shower stall, as well as how large of one you can purchase, you will need to start shopping for your shower. Although you may expect to find everything that you need all in one place, it may be a little bit difficult to do. Although there are a number of retailers, particularly home improvement stores, that sell standalone shower kits, there are others who do not. If you are unable to find a retailer who sells shower kits, you may need to purchase all of your parts separately. The parts that you will need may include, but should not be limited to, a shower floor, shower walls, a shower door, as well as a shower head.
When it comes to buying a new standalone shower, there are many home-owners who go searching for the nicest looking standalone shower. While there is a chance that you may be looking for the best, there is also a chance that may be remodelling your kitchen on a budget. If so, you may be pleased to know that standalone showers come in a number of different sizes, shapes, and styles. Whether you are looking a trendy looking standalone shower or the most affordable one, there is a good chance that you will be able to find exactly what you were looking for. Just in case you were wondering, most standard standalone showers start selling for around two or three hundred dollars, and from there the prices goes up.
As previously mentioned, most home improvement stores, both on and off-line, carry a selection of shower supplies, including supplies that are grouped into packages or kits. Therefore, if you are looking to have a new standalone shower in your home, it may be a good idea to shop at one of your local home improvement stores. In fact, home improvement stores, especially large ones, are known for their displays. In order to find the perfect shower for your soon to be remodelled bathroom, you may want to see these displays; however, if the displays are not as important to you, you may also want to think about shopping online. Regardless of whether you shop, whether it is online or locally, you will want to try and find shower kits or packages. These kits and packages are not only convenient, but they may also save you money.
Once you have found and purchased the standalone shower of your choice, you may want to start installing it right away. Since most standalone shower kits come with instructions, you should easily be able to install your own shower, even if you have no prior home improvement experience. What could be better than having a new shower installed and saving money at the same time?

The supplies that you will need will also help to determine whether or not you should buy your supplies online. For instance, is you are looking to purchase a new bathtub it may be a little bit difficult for you to buy a bathtub online. Of course, it is always possible to do, but you may find it costly. Depending on where you would be ordering your new bathtub from, it may need to travel across the country. If that is the case, you may find the cost of shipping or delivery to be quite expensive. You can also save yourself a fairly large amount of time by shopping online. If you have an idea as to what you are looking for, it is possible to find, order, and pay for your kitchen remodelling supplies in as little as a few minutes.
In addition to the amount of time that you can save, by shopping for your bathroom remodelling supplies online, you also have a better chance of finding what you are looking for. Whether you are looking to purchase a new bathtub, a new bathroom sink, a new toilet, or bathroom floor tiles, the internet gives you access to hundreds of thousands of different items. This means that whether you are looking for low-cost remodelling supplies, elegant supplies, or those that are custom made, you should easily be able to find what you are looking for online. You can get started with a standard internet search.
Although there are more advantages to buying your bathroom remodelling supplies online than there are disadvantages, you will find that the above mentioned disadvantage is a fairly large one. If you are shopping on a budget, it is best to look for online retailers that offer shipping discounts for their bathroom remodelling materials, supplies, and fixtures. If you are able to find one of these discounts, you could, without a doubt, benefit from doing you’re shopping online.

When shopping for kitchen cabinets, most homeowners focus on the look of the cabinets and the design of the doors, but they don’t ask about the most important feature of the cabinets- the material used to make the cabinet box. While the face frame and doors are important for the overall look, the structure of the cabinet itself is what will determine the lifespan of your kitchen.
While the majority of kitchen cabinet manufacturers will use solid wood for the face frame and doors, there are several different materials that are used for the cabinet construction. Due to the limited amount of aged timber that is available, it has become too expensive for even custom cabinet manufacturers to use real wood for the sides and back. Some higher end cabinet manfacturers build beautiful solid wood cabinets, but for the majority of homeowners, these are simply not economically feasible.
Particleboard is acommon material that some lower end cabinets will feature (and which you may recognize if you have ever shopped at Ikea). Particleboard, also called pressboard, is really just small chips of wood compressed together and held together with glue. Unlike plywood which consists of multiple layers of wood with the grain running in alternating patterns, particleboard doesn’t have any of that interweaving to help strengthen the board. Because of this, the material will tend to chip or break easier, and will not be able to support as much weight. Quite often, you will have to use supports to strengthen the cabinets if you are installing a heavier countertop.
Plywood is the most universally used material for kitchen cabinets. More expensive cabinets will use 3/4″ plywood with a wood veneer for the sides and sometimes for the back (most will not use solid plywood for the back either, but they will include mounting strips across the back). Most cabinets that you will find on the market will feature 1/2″ plywood, which is more than substantial enough to support any countertop material.
Another regularly used material is fiberboard. Fiberboard is basically a thick, dense cardboard. While it isn’t as fragile as particleboard, it doesn’t offer the rigidity of plywood or real wood. The other problems results from the fasteners. Without the grain of wood, fasteners will tend to lose their grip over time.
So when starting the shopping process for new cabinets, it is important to consider the pros and cons all the features of the cabinets. Just because a cabinet looks good, doesn’t mean that it will be able to hold up to the wear and tear that you are going to cause.

Beech is a kind of wood that is well suited for use in any home, building or establishment that wants a versatile kind of wood for the floor. Since beech is a durable, affordable and versatile kind of wood, it is one of the favorite choices among wood lovers. Beech wood floors come in three distinct types, the engineered, the laminated and the solid wood variations. Although some people may consider the laminated beech floors as part of the engineered types, many people still place these floor types in a different category.
Which kind of beech floor you choose depends on a few factors. These factors for choosing between the many different kinds of beech flooring options include costs, durability, ease of care, ease of installation and versatility. With these factors in mind and knowing what you want from your beech floor, it will then be pretty easy to choose the kind of beech flooring type to use.
Solid Beech Flooring
Made out of solid wood planks from European or American beech trees, solid beech flooring is the first option for this wood type. Solid beech flooring is installed using the usual nail-down technique that most wooden floors use or with the glue-down technique that some people find easier to execute. Since these are made of solid wood that is not compressed or engineered for added durability, solid beech flooring may buckle and warp with the seasons and the climates.
Humidity will have a huge effect on how this wood behaves and one of the problems that you may encounter with a solid wood beech floor is the shrinking or expanding that it may undergo. Care for solid beech floors may be a bit more tedious than caring for the engineered and laminated kinds of this floor type but if given proper care, this kind of a floor can last longer than a person’s lifetime.
Laminated and Engineered Beech Flooring
When you say engineered, it essentially means that something is created with the help of technology. This is what engineered beech flooring is, built with the help of technology. This kind of a floor is created with the use of numerous plies of wood that have been glued together to form the slabs and the panels that are placed on floors. The installation of these engineered floors is often found to be easier than the installation of solid wood floors. This is because an engineered beech floor can be laid out on the floor and installed with the use of wood glue.
Most engineered wood floors, including beech, are crafted out of similar core wood plies with the top wood ply being the wood the engineered slab is supposed to represent. This means that an engineered beech floor can be made out of many different wood plies with the topmost ply being the beech wood ply. These kinds of floors are considered to be more durable in some ways than their solid wood counterparts.
Since these are made with multiple wood plies, these wood plies are placed in a criss-cross pattern that gives the wood more durability. This criss-cross pattern is also used to help give engineered wood the kind of quality that solid wood does not have, the ability to withstand shrinking and stretching with the seasons.
Installation Techniques for Beech Flooring
Installation of your beech flooring, whether it is solid or engineered, should be done by a professional to ensure that your floor is evenly laid out and beautifully done. If you are adept at doing things your own way, you can actually try and install your floor on your own. There are three ways to install your wood floor; nail-down, glue-down and floating.
The first two installation techniques can be used for solid wood and engineered wood floors while the last one is specifically for engineered or laminated floors. Before installing your floors, you should be aware that wood floors of any kind should not be installed in places near moisture. This includes areas that are below ground level where moisture rises and may permeate your beech wood floors.
You should also take note to avoid placing your wood flooring near areas that are also prone to moisture despite their being high above ground. Included in the list of places where you should not install your beech floors are bathroom areas or near bathroom areas, indoor pool areas and your kitchen. These are some of the places that wood floors may suffer damage from moisture. Placing wooden floors in these parts of the house is not advisable and is a waste of money due to the possibility of damage.

Finding your way back to a home decorated with attractive decorations can help you to feel uplifted and decrease your stress levels after a hard day’s work. It will also help you feel more at home because it displays your personal tastes around you. When you are living in a well-decorated home it is easier to relish your free time and more interesting to have over guests for an evening.
Some researchers have found that it is good for your morale to be surrounded by plants and natural things. We believe that this is definitely true of the home. This is because we think the real source of satisfaction is the sense of something natural and easy to relate to. We are spiritual animals who need to be bathed in fractal manifestations of life.
This effect can be enhanced by displaying attractive art prints containing organic-looking things which cause you to feel soothed and rejuvenated. When we put up art prints, we gain the ability to select what types of stimulating environments we will have around us, but the effect should be the same: increased relaxation and well-being. These feelings emerge due an increased sense of oneness with our home world. We feel much more settled in, we feel less threatened or challenged by our surroundings, and so we are able to feel comfortable and at ease.
Another thing is that, when we have taken an active role in the way our homes will look it helps us to feel as though we have become an integral part of our home environment. This supplements our feelings of being relaxed because it gives us the feeling that we have a hand in our environment. This alleviates stress and helps us to have a clearer relationship to ourselves and our families when we are in our own home.
Lastly, a beautiful home can help to build up your relationships with others because it makes it significantly smoother to invite acquaintances and associates over to enjoy your home with you. When you have hung up art prints that display an element of yourself, you have lovelied up the place with a variety of conversation pieces that can help to start up fresh conversations and build up your rapport with your guests.
Even if you are only home alone you will find that it is much more enjoyable to be surrounded by pieces that you have invited into your field of vision, because your own consciousness is connected to the pictures at a deep level. Over time, your appreciation of your chosen environment will develop as you grow to feel more involved in home in your environment.

Every year, new design trends take center stage. This year the focus has shifted to Green Design and Growing Older. Below is a list of the main design trends for 2008
1. Green Design- With the alarming rise in gas prices and building materials, eco-friendly products are now a stable of any kitchen design. The kitchen and bath industry is at the forefront of green design with the development of new technologies and products, such as bamboo and recycled materials including glass, plastics, paper, and metals.
2. Aging-in-Place- More and more manufacturers are catering to the aging “baby boomer” market. New products feature accessibility and ease of use to accommodate boomers through the years, while still offering stylish design. From dishwashers accessible from a wheelchair to cabinet drawers that open automatically, manufacturers are recognizing the importance of universal design.
3. Organization- To keep paperwork and projects from piling up, many companies specialize in home organization. Put your client’s mind at ease with the upgraded additions of cabinetry dividers and custom storage solutions. With companies now specializing in after-market products, you can find a wide range of products that will customize any stock cabinets that you will find on the market.
4. Multiple Layers of Lighting- Accent lighting placed at various heights, under-cabinet lighting, interior cabinet lighting, and above cabinet lighting combine to create a warm and inviting kitchen. Task lighting adds drama and function, while dim accent lighting softens and soothes a room. Each layer of lighting serves a different purpose, which can enhance the room.
5. Compact & Efficient Appliances- One of hottest trends in 2008, is the incorporation of compact and efficient appliances. Horizontal dishwashers, French door wall ovens, two-tiered ranges, and power boil options on cooktops can ease the day-to-day cooking tasks, while maintaining the desired beauty and resourcefulness of your designs.
6. Expanded Color Palettes- Today’s contemporary designs allow for vibrant splashes of color in the kitchen and bathroom. Through bright and bold colored backsplashes, countertops, appliances, and cabinetry inserts and overlays, homeowners can incorporate the newest and hottest colors into any design. A wide range of color is now being used to evoke emotion and set the tone for your next projects.
7. Tile Murals- A trend that is increasing in popularity is using custom murals in the kitchen. Color, form, and design combine to create varied patterns ranging from modern graphics to soft floral patterns. A wide variety of patterns offers a look that’s sure to suit any client’s taste.
8. Integrated Electronics- By integrating wires, speakers, control panels, and flat-screen TVs directly into your design, you’ll allow the surroundings of the room to flow seamlessly around any audio/video equipment that you may want. Planning ahead will allow you to conceal the wiring and give your kitchen a truely custom look.

When selling a house it is often the kitchen that is the predominant selling point with buyers. A kitchen that has a great layout, stylish cupboards and worktops will add up to creating a space that gives an element of elegance and improves the value of the property. Whenever selling a property it is normally advisable to carry out some work on the kitchen, it may seem expensive at the outset, but if you are wily about which elements to update you can create a contemporary and stylish kitchen that will add a great deal of value.
If you are going to update your kitchen affordably it is important to focus upon the small touches that can completely change the look; these small touches include the cupboards, the cupboard handles and the worktops. If you are clever about how to update these elements you can create a completely new looking kitchen at a fraction of the price. When you are doing this it is advisable to make the most of design magazines to find inspiration.
If your worktops and cabinets are made from solid wood changing their appearance can be extremely simple and cheap. Wood is an extremely versatile material in terms of design, by sanding down the existing stain you can then re-stain the wood making the most of the wood’s natural colour or even paint it in a way so that it becomes a stunning design feature. Natural stains are extremely popular in kitchen design at the moment and whether changing your worktops or cupboards you can make the most of the wood’s natural grain for a contemporary feel.
When looking at the handles for your cupboards it is important to experiment with a wide variety of options. A visit to a kitchen supplier will show that the range out there is vast. When selecting handles it is important to choose a style that matches your kitchen, while chrome may be extremely popular, if you have a wood kitchen it is unlikely that the handles will fit into that look. Ultimately you want your kitchen to be homogenous in terms of styling, this sounds easy but it is surprising how mismatched kitchens can look when people try to update them.
The area around the sink can often become dirty and even covered with mildew because of the excessive amounts of moisture. Rather than retiling the whole splash-back area a cheaper alternative is to install a board of wood, if you are doing this however make sure to use a good waterproof paint that will ensure the wood doesn’t rot. The same can be said for the worktops around the sink, a waterproof stain used on a hardwood will ensure that they are sturdy and resilient enough to cope with daily use.
While you may be put off by replacing all of the worktops in your kitchen because of the price it can be a great idea. It may be an expensive option but the look it creates will be ultimately worthwhile. With choices of wood, stone, granite or metal the options are endless if you want to replace worktops. Obviously these vary in price but quality materials can make or break a kitchen.
Hopefully this article has given some idea of how easy it is to change the look of a kitchen. This can add value you to home whether you are looking to sell or not. By using quality materials and a stylistic eye it is possible to create a contemporary and elegant kitchen that is practical and aesthetically pleasing.
Interior design expert Thomas Pretty looks into how changing the worktops and cupboards can completely update the style and usability of a kitchen.

Try leather lamp shades for western decorating and interior design. The use of beautiful rustic shades has become more prevalent in recent years as decorators have become more and more aware of how simple it is to create western and country style in any room, by simply using a rustic lamp shade as part of the home’s decor.
The popular style you come across in the southwest and in designer magazines can be readily copied by simply replacing the shades on lighting fixtures you already have, or by putting them on specially designed rustic lamps like wooden and antler lamps. Leather lamp shades come in a natural color and are also dyed in a variety of colors that look amazing and are great for use with any color scheme.
What I like most about rustic lamp shades is their versatility and the way they accent Native American decor. These hand-stitched, rustic lamp shades are created from soft pigskin, suede leather that is mostly opaque and has a unique finish because of the natural small hair follicle holes on the hide.
Wonderful for directing light both upward and outward, leather lamp shades are popular for use on desk lamps, table lamps, floor lamps, chandeliers, wall sconces, antler lamps and all rustic lamps. It doesn’t matter if you are trying to illuminate a spacious room with floor lamps or other rustic lamps, or are only trying to brighten a dark area with table lamps or accent lamps, leather lamp shades will give you the perfect lighting effect in lighting your home.
You will love the warm glow of rustic lamps shades and the inviting warmth they create when using them in combination with other western style design accessories like Native American rugs and American Indian pottery or with rustic furniture. Knowing how you will use the shade is one thing to figure out before making a purchase. Big lamp shades that give off more light are better for reading and illuminating a big room, while smaller shades work well for accent lamps or brightening a smaller corner.
Leather lamp shades used on table lamps or bedside lamps can make a dramatic statement and bring authentic southwestern style to any room. Whether used with traditional style lighting fixtures or on special western lamps, leather lamp shades are the best way to achieve the rustic design that you love. The wonderful versatility of western leather lamp shades make them appropriate for use in your living room, office, den, bedrooms and in any other room where you would enjoy adding southwestern style.
They also look great in rustic style homes and are the perfect way to bring out the natural beauty of its surroundings. Today, it is easy to buy leather lamp shades online or find them in shops that sell Native American style decorating items. If you love western style in home decorating, and would like to enhance old west style in your home decorating, try using the unique beauty of rustic leather lamp shades for your interior design.

Painted lamp shades bring out the best in Native American home decor and are definitely the way to go in rustic lighting. The designer look they enhance in your home will have your friends talking about your beautiful interior design long after they leave. In fact, I enjoy decorating with these wonderful shades so much that I often give them as gifts for Christmas or birthdays. These lamp shades are an incredible way to enhance colorful southwestern or Native American style in your interior design and achieve a look that is truly unique.
From elaborate portrayals of Native American Indians and extraordinary mountain terrain, to intricate paintings of dry desert landscape and Indian pueblos, you will no doubt be amazed with how these hand crafted lamp shades add to your home’s Native American design and style. The thing I like most about decorating with painted lamp shades or giving them as gifts, are the large variety of shade colors and options obtainable.
You can decide between exquisite artwork on dyed pigskin leather lamp shades that come in red, green, black, gold, wine, brown or natural, or find a painting you like on a rustic rawhide shade in light or dark. Whether a suede leather or natural rawhide shade, you will certainly find one that matches your color scheme and your decorating style. The beautiful work of the hand-stitched lacing on the leather lamp shade brings beautiful charm and true Native American style to your rustic cabin or country home.
Trying to simply enhance rustic style in a room in your home? The best thing about painted lamp shades is that they look just as wonderful in all rooms of your home and wherever else you want to enhance Native American style. The wonderful thing about painted lamp shades is that they are a very easy way to change your lighting fixtures or give new life to a home without having to spend a lot of money or make a lot of changes. Use painted lamp shades on unique rustic style light fixtures such as wrought iron or antler lamps to create a true rugged mountain look, or just switch the shade on the regular style lamps that you are already using to enhance western style.
Regularly used on chandelier lamps for illuminating large rooms or for table lamps and desk lamps, painted lamp shades are excellent for using anywhere you want to incorporate a splash of color with rustic flare. You will be excited to see how easily a lamp shade can revolutionize the look of the whole room and create true western style in your home. Use painted leather lamp shades with other country or Native style accessories for authentic rustic style. Painted lamp shades look wonderful when combined with Native American blankets and throws, kiva ladders, ceremonial drums, or hand-crafted Indian baskets and pottery.
These one of a kind shades are difficult to buy in retail stores where southwest decorating items are sold, but you can find them online. If you enjoy the Native style homes found throughout the southwest, or just want to bring color and rustic flare to your decor, try using the unique art of painted lamp shades.

When it comes to beautiful floors, it is hard to beat tile. Tile floors are beautiful, durable, and natural. With today’s sealers, stone and clay tiles are virtually impervious to food spills, water and mud making them very practical for kitchens, bathrooms and entry ways. There is an extensive range of colors in the natural stones from cool white marble to black granite, with golds, grays, greens and brown in between. Stone floors can be accented with an inlay or a border in contrasting stone or they can simply be topped with an area rug.
Tile floors can run from country casual to formal and luxurious and some of them can come at a high price. There are bargain prices out there at the home warehouse stores, but when buying tile for floors be sure the tile you are choosing is rated for flooring. It will say so on the box. Floor tiles are thicker and more durable then those for walls or countertops. Unless you expect extremely heavy traffic, your tiles need only be approved for residential, not commercial use.
Tile floors do have certain drawbacks. If glassware falls on tile floors it will be no contest…expect to clean up shattered glass. If small children fall on it…well, the floor is hard so you get the picture. Also, if you drop heavy items on the tile, you could crack or break the tile and if you have spare tile (highly recommended) you will have to reset it and re-grout around it. If you don’t have any spare tiles left over from when your tile was laid, matching what you already have could be an impossible task. When you do any tile job, keep a few extras around just in case.
Tile floors can be tiring to stand on for long periods of time and unless radiant (underfloor) heating is installed, they are almost always cold. Finally, remember that most hard flooring is heavy, so be sure that the subfloor is strong enough to support it. On the upside, you are never going to wear tile out. Sometimes your grout may start to look kind of dingy, but grout sealers should prevent that or you can re-grout which is a surprisingly easy process that can pay off big dividends. A re-grout job can give your current tile job a whole new look.
If the area to be tiled will get wet, either choose tiles that repel water, or be prepared to do some extra maintenance. With today’s sealers that extra maintenance is really not a big deal. Select floor tiles with a grainy or bumpy surface, so they won’t be slippery when wet. With the rise of modern manufacturing methods, many tile materials have become chameleon-like. Porcelain or ceramic tiles, for instance, can be made to look like natural stone, either textured or smooth or can even look like terra cotta. With all these possibilities you can get the look you like as well as the properties you need without a lot of maintenance.

Bathroom tile design ideas and the tile material you select can have a dramatic impact on both the appearance and maintenance needed for your bathroom. If you are looking for bathroom tile design ideas for a new bathroom or plan to remodel an existing one, understand the characteristics of the various materials you can choose from.
Good tile designs for bathroom materials should create a floor surface that looks good and is water and stain resistant plus safe to walk on. Here is an introduction to common floor tile material types with their basic characteristics:
1. Decorative - these tile types usually have either floral patterns or a geometric design. They can be used to create a pattern within tiles that otherwise are the same color or size. Using decorative floor tile of a different color in your bathroom tile design can accent other colors that will be used in the fixtures, materials and furnishings.
2. Glazed Ceramic - these kinds of floor tile can be made to look like they were made of natural stone. The great thing about this type is that the material that is baked onto the surface provides a hard and durable floor that is easy to maintain. These tiles can be found in a wide variety of colors to go with any decor style. For safety purposes, be sure the surface has a slip-resistant finish when using where the floor can be wet.
3. Mosaic - long ago, small mosaic tiles were carefully set by hand, creating beautiful patterns. Today, the same visual effect can be had by using rectangular mosaic tile sheets with the small tiles held together with a mesh backing. Many different materials are used for this kind of bathroom tile design and because there will be many grout lines, the floor will be slip-resistant.
4. Natural Stone - can be manufactured from various natural materials such as granite, limestone, marble, travertine and slate. The beauty of these materials will be enjoyed by everyone. However, stain absorption and cleaning difficulties create special challenges when using natural stone for your bathroom tile design. Limestone and slate are especially porous and sealing them after installation is necessary to avoid unwanted staining.
5. Porcelain - made from white clay and fired at high temperatures, this tile has a high degree of resistance to staining. Since a white clay base is used, a wide variety of colors can be added and different surface textures can be made to resemble other materials.
6. Quarry - made from red clay, the color options will be more limited for quarry tile. The surface will be unglazed which means they will stain easily, so using a sealer is recommended. Because the surface is not glazed, they will provide a non-slip flooring surface even when sealed.
7. Terra Cotta - made from fired clay, these tiles are made in several countries such as Mexico, France, Spain, Italy and Portugal. They can either be machine made or hand made and will be non-vitreous which means they will need to be sealed. Terra cotta tile comes in various colors and geometric shapes which gives you many options for your bathroom tile design ideas.
Besides the hard, durable floor materials described above, you can also find other more flexible materials to choose from. If your floor base is not as strong and will have some sag to it, using a flexible tile material will be necessary unless the floor is reinforced to provide a more rigid support for the floor. Check out the possibility of using resilient tiles, laminate or wood parquet tile in this case. And be sure and speak with your supplier about the appropriate sealer to use for the material you are using.
Enjoy the planning process and let your imagination go as you select the style, color, pattern and size for your bathroom tile design. Attractive and functional bathrooms add value to homes. Even if you will not be selling your home anytime soon, having a bathroom tile design reflecting your personal style means you will have a special place to enjoy every day for many years to come.

Cottage decorating can be very appealing particularly for individuals who live in the city. After all, when the hustle and bustle of the city has made it’s way into your house who wouldn’t feel the urge to make life less complicated with country decor?
A big principle of decorating in a cottage style is to make your place look like it has a lot of space. In order to do that you need to get rid of all that stuff you don’t really need. Recycle and reuse everything that may serve as a storage container to hide those items that you do keep. Suitcases and old hatboxes may make ideal storage containers and also add decorative appeal
Rather than throwing out your old broken furniture, why not repair it? Showing love to an older piece of furniture is part of the appeal of cottage decorating. Consider simple, bold colors that are consistent throughout your space. White is constantly a fine selection when talking about cottage decor. An all white theme is fresh and clean, it can make your home seem more spacious and serve as a great pallet for your personal touches.
Floral patterns, simple embroidery and vibrant colors will likely be your mainstay for decorative quilts, pillows and throws. Use your unique creativity to add your own personal charm to the interior decorating scheme. Shop at yard sales and flea markets for anything from window drapes to towels. Art festivals and colleges often offer wonderful works that can be bought very reasonably, and you could get a real gem from an artist that later becomes well known.
Ferret out the best finds as this style of decorating looks great when you use mismatched furniture and accessories that you don’t buy in a department store. Old architectural pieces, needlepoints and lamps can all add to the shabby chic appeal. And also you will be certain your accessories and furniture aren’t the same pieces you see in every other home
Finally, but most significantly to cottage decorating, bring the feel of a country day to your home. Add softness along with country ambiance to your design with a container garden. You might grow herbs properly in your window - they look great and you can employ them in your cooking also. .
Cottage decor is the contrast of eclectic decor. It works with vintage used furniture that still looks great. The unique and interesting country cottage in the city is a terrific style to come home to.

The types of lighting used in a room can dramatically change the way that room looks. Lighting can be a complicated issue, so let’s start by defining some lighting terms.
Incandescent lights. These lights give a nice, golden glow to a room. They are much nicer to use than the cheaper looking flourescent lights.
Downlights are round or square cannisters, usually metal, that are recessed into or mounted onto the ceiling. These lights could be used as spotlights, floodlights or for general lighting.
Table lamps can be used as task lighting or for general lighting.
Uplights are normally one-bulb lights that are placed on the floor behind furniture, glass shelving or plants to give them a dramatic accent.
Strip lighting can be used behind shelves and on stairs and platforms for a dramatic result. The platforms lit this way can appear to be floating above the floor.
Track Lighting. A track makes it possible to use one electrical outlet to supply electricity to many lights along the track’s length. The track can be surface mounted or recessed. Track lighting is one of the most versatile lighting systems available and can be moved around to accent different areas of a room.
Track lighting and recessed lighting can be set to produce an effect called wall washing which, as it sounds, washes an entire wall with light.
Dimmer switches give the ability to provide a different level of light by turning the knob. Dimmers save electricity and provide mood lighting for special occasions.
Different rooms in the home need different lighting. Halls and stairs should be well lit to prevent accidents. Livingrooms need a mixture of lighting options: background, task lights and accent lighting. The best lighting for kitchens is bright overhead lights and extra under-counter lights for task lighting.
All types of lighting fixtures can be found for whatever your needs may be. They can run from very inexpensive to extremely high cost fixtures.
There are special considerations when using lighting for art or wall hangings.
If you are lighting a single picture or painting, try to place the light so that it does not show a reflection on the glass of the art piece. There are special picture lights made especially for lighting pictures but some of these are not very effective since they can only highlight the top or bottom of the picture. Downlights are a good alternative.
When lighting a group of pictures, it’s better to use individual lights in track lighting that can be positioned towards the pictures.
Lighting sculptures can be particularly challenging. You can use uplights, downlights or even strip lights, depending upon the sculpture and its placement. Experiment with different lights and their placement to get the best effect.
Creative use of lighting can really enhance your decorating project. Make use of all of the different types of lighting to make your home a beautiful showcase.

When people begin to think of remodeling their home, often times, they’ll start with the bathroom. Why would they start with the bathroom, when there are so many other areas of the house to decorate and spruce up? The answer may be as simple as the fact that everyone has that idea of their dream bathroom. Part of this dream includes a steam shower design. Or, if it doesn’t, it definitely should, as a steam shower design can make the difference between just an ok bathroom and a fantastic bathroom.
Visit Your Local Home Improvement Store
For ideas on the ultimate steam shower design for your bathroom, visit your local home improvement store or search the internet. Before you get started with tearing down walls, or any improvements for that matter, make sure you first get a good picture of what you would like your steam shower design to look like.
Your local home improvement center should have fixture ideas as well as other remodeling ideas for the rest of your house. However, if you’re just focused on a steam shower design, there are many to choose from.
The first thing you have to figure out is if you are looking for a shower or are you looking for more of a sauna type steam bath that comes with enclosures. It really all comes down to how much money you want to spend and which steam shower design you choose.
Once you have the steam shower design that you want in mind, the next thing you need to do is decide if you’re going to install it or if you’re going to pay someone to install it. If you’re going to install it yourself, it’s recommended that you only do this if you know exactly what you’re doing. If you do know what you’re doing, you can save a lot of money on labor costs. You will just have to buy the fixtures, the actual steam bath, the enclosures and everything else you may need.
Hire Someone And Have The Job Done Right The First Time
If you don’t know what you’re doing, it’s best to pay someone to do the job for you. That way, you can have the steam shower design you want and you won’t have to pay for a replacement later on because you didn’t quite know what you were doing. You may have to pay a little extra for someone else to do the work for you but you’ll end up better in the long run when you figure that the job will be done the right way.
Having a steam shower in your home is like having a sauna in your home, just like they have at your local gym. There’s no better way to relax, especially after a long, tiresome day. You can have one of your very own, you just have to choose the right steam shower design for you.
Mike Hirn is a longtime sauna enthusiast. His website supplies a wealth of free information about the construction, use and health benefits of home saunas, steam showers and hot tubs.

If one goes to a trip inside a house, the first thing that he will see is the floor. Once he takes his first step, he looks at the floor and nothing more. The difference is, if the flooring is not impressive, then the visitor will never notice it, but if the floor is filled with a wonderful array of tile designs, it’s going to leave a good impression on the mind of the visitor.
If he goes to the kitchen, the presence of good tiles will also be the first thing that he will notice. It’s not the pans nor the oven, nor the refrigerator, it’s the counter-top. If he goes to the bathroom to relieve himself, we’re pretty sure that he will definitely notice the tiles, if there are any.
Tiles are wonderful house ornaments which exist for the function of accentuating the beauty of one’s home. Tiles also have a purpose, and they are chosen according to where they are going to be put and how they are going to be used.
Types of Tiles
There are thousands of different types and styles of tiles. This is because tiles are used practically everywhere, not only in the house but in other structures as well. There are the common stock tiles which one can find in any common folk’s kitchen or bathroom. There are the higher-end ceramic tiles which are used in a more decorative fashion. There are also the stone tiles which come in different materials such as granite, marble or slate. Some tiles are mass produced and some are hand-made. The hand-painted tiles are usually the most expensive ones because they are made with a specific design which caters to a specific type of consumer.
Natural tiles (which are made from either stone or ceramic) will project a certain level of exquisiteness. These tiles are usually priced more expensively. They are very resilient and durable. The downside is that everything that falls into the tiles will certainly break most of the times because of the structural soundness of these tiles. They also keep the coldness of the environment which can be a downside in cold areas.
Different tiles are installed in different places according to their resilience, beauty and durability. There are tiles which are more suitable for flooring, there are those which are suitable for kitchen tops and those which are more suitable for the bathrooms. Diversity and combination are key things toward putting up a great tile design.
Installing Tiles
When installing tiles, it’s important to take note of the kind of tile you are using and the location where it is going to be put. Different materials entail different procedures and tools for installation. Often times, the specific instructions are given by the manufacturer, but to be sure, always ask the sales person regarding the specifics of the installation procedures.
There are several tools that one needs to have to be able to properly and cleanly install tiles. For the more advanced tile enthusiasts, having tile nippers, tile cutters and trowels would be good. Remember that installing tiles in flat surfaces is the key, however, curved surfaces can also be covered with tiles if needed. Remember that when purchasing tiles, always get some extra tiles because accidents will happen and some of the tiles will get broken. The law of averages also applies to tile installation.
Designing through Tiles
If you are thinking about installing tiles in a certain area of your house, a good practice is to make an illustration of the area. The dimensions of the area in the illustration should be proportional to the dimensions of the area. The area should be divided into the dimensions that would be proportionate to the tiles that you are going to use. This way, you can clearly see how each tile would fit into the specified area and you can estimate how many tiles you are going to buy. Don’t forget to include the buffer tiles in case some of them break.
Also make sure that the color of the tiles that you are going to use would match that of the rest of the area. The tiles need not to be of one-color only. One can mix and match as long as he knows that the colors will match.
Tiles greatly accentuate the beauty of one’s home. Whether they are placed in the floor, in the kitchen or elsewhere, proper preparation and installation of these tiles will definitely mark up the value of one’s home.

According to contractors, the room that is undergoing the greatest amount of transformation in new construction and remodeling is the bathroom. In fact, since the 1930s, the average master bath has tripled in size and the huge bathrooms build in houses today have even an oversized closet inside. The change in bathroom space is attributed to the fact that people are now spending more time in their bathrooms when they wish to relax while taking a bath. Experts point out, that the weekend spa mentality has developed into a new lifestyle trend with which Americans feel comfortable and want to experience on a daily basis without leaving the comfort of their own home.
Since the bathroom space has increased, the new updated version calls for an addition of bathroom furniture, which can make any bathroom feel less sterilized and bring in the feeling of comfort that used to be associated with other rooms of the house, like the bedroom or living-room. Moreover, the additional furniture pieces provide extra storage space; something that is definitely needed nowadays by both women and men. To cover the demand, many bathroom cabinet manufacturers offer now sinks set in furniture pieces, which are designed specifically for bathroom use. Options now range from modern glass and steel pieces, to old renaissance dressers and armoires. Moreover, people tend to mix and match furniture and trim their uncovered surfaces in order to make them blend with the flooring, connecting the bathroom to the rest of the house.
But apart from the amount of space available and selecting the right type of furniture, today’s bathroom-users also want to create a bathroom in which they can relax and rejuvenate. These moments of relaxation can be enhanced with simple additions, like a bathroom stool near the tub or in the shower, or if the space permits it with an ottoman for some precious relaxing times. Furthermore, the right type of lighting can be installed quickly altering the feeling one has while taking a bath. Again candles, small regular lamps on the vanity or shelves can transform the bathroom and give it the feeling of tranquility.
Extremely important apart from the furniture selected is the bathroom’s flooring. Tile or wood can enhance the overall appearance of the bathroom and their designs can be matched to blend with the house’s other rooms. Also, the color of the walls or the wallpaper selected to be placed have to match the rest of the area, like the floor, the sink and the bathtub creating a unified outcome. If you decide to go with the wallpaper option, be extremely cautious as it has to be installed really well in order not to fall off the walls as you steam your bath.
Finally, keep your bathroom organized and clean. Numerous scattered items give a feeling of clutter and do not help you enjoy this room of your house. Furthermore, select towels and bathrobes that are soft and fluffy. It is better if their colors and design matches the rest of the bathroom, but most importantly they have to be replenished with new ones almost every year so you will continue feeling the same snugly sensation every time you exit the shower.

1. A sense of historic connection resonates with buyers today. French, English, Tuscan and Spanish homes with stone or stucco walls, tile roofs, iron fixtures, heavy beams and rustic floors are in demand. Old world styles are in demand.
2. The Craftsman style, built in the early 1900’s, is back. Rustic stonework, deep eaves, tapered columns and wide trim, reflect the handmade look over the mass produced.
3. Farmhouses and country homes are sought after for remodeling and are a source of ideas for new homes. Wood windows, simple floor plans, local stone and muted colors connect with nature and earlier times.
4. The retro look is fashionable, and a great fit with fashionable mid century modern furniture styles. Younger folks are breathing new life into their parent’s ranch styles and split levels from the 1950’s.
5. Urban modern is everywhere, with experimental use of space, color, tile, glass, plastic and metal.
6. The preferred ceiling height is about 9 - 12 feet. Two story ceilings are out. In small rooms these feel like towers.
7. Lots of floor level changes are not desirable. These can cause tripping and are not pleasant to live with.
8. Most buyers today want at least two living areas and four bedrooms. Formal dining rooms are still in demand. Formal living rooms are often converted to studies, libraries, or guest rooms. Media rooms are a sought after feature when price range allows.
9. The visual and spatial connection between kitchen and family room is firmly established.
10. Cabinet space is required for large televisions and wall space is needed for the newer flat screens.
11. Three car garages are in demand, especially in areas without basements.
12. Structured wiring is important today for internet, phone, cable and sound. Desk space for computers, fax machines, printers, etc. is required.
13. Good access to the outdoors is a basic design requirement. French doors combine access with light. Sliding glass doors are not as favored.
14. Lots of storage is needed for today’s lifestyle. People have lots of stuff. Huge master closets, pantries, laundry rooms, and extra storage closets are expected.
15. For some people, very spare lofts are perfect. Simplified spaces are an antidote to today’s complex lifestyle.
16. Most buyers are savvy about kitchen design and appreciate good work spaces with easy access to range, refrigerator and sink. Lots of counter space, deep drawers, two sinks, nearby extra refrigerator, and butler’s pantries are all desirable features.
17. Stainless appliances are still in vogue. In urban modern styles, white and colored appliances are back. High end homes conceal some appliances in cabinetry.
18. Eat-in kitchens, with breakfast bar or room for a small table, are a basic requirement for most buyers.
19. Antique tables or cabinets are being refurbished and used as bath cabinets. Kitchen cabinets that look like furniture are a great look.
20. Granite and stone counters are popular. However, granite tops added to 1980’s cabinets do not go over well. Consider your architectural style before adding features. Concrete countertops are perfect for ultra modern, but are not a mainstream feature.
21. Built in refrigerators are desired. Wide, cabinet depth refrigerators have a built-in look, and are not as expensive as the true built-in type.
22. Large rustic stone or ceramic tiles, concrete or wood floors have a warm, functional appeal. Subway tile (3″ x 6″) is popular in bathrooms and on kitchen backsplashes. Patterned cultured marble and laminate are out. Slippery, white floor tile is out.
23. Generous trim is a much appreciated upgrade. Wide, baseboards (6″+), and door and window trim (4″+) are key features in old European and American styles.
24. Craftsman style doors work well with both old and modern looks. These are simple square frames with flat panels. Iron or heavy wood entry doors make strong statements that buyers love.
25. Rustic finishes on hardware, such as brushed nickel, oil rubbed bronze, weathered brass, and other non-shiny finishes are the popular choices.
26. Rustic wood beams or wood covered ceilings create a hand crafted, primitive look that buyers like.
27. Wrought iron gates, stair rails and light fixtures compliment the rustic style. Stair rails in ultra modern homes may be wire, pipe or painted metal.
28. Front porches and covered patios are always a strong selling point. Outdoor fireplaces are popping up everywhere.
29. Re-claimed wood used on floors or walls is very desirable. New wood floors that have been distressed or scraped are valued. A variety of wood boards with cracks exposed are being used instead of traditional wood flooring.
30. Bamboo floors are popular, especially in modern style homes where light colored floors are desired.
31. Concrete floors - often stained and scored are popular. These go well with the modern look, and are used in Craftsman and rustic European styles too.
32. Colorful laminate floors are a good fit with mid-century modern. Laminate floors that look like wood are out. Parquet floors are out, unless they are hand crafted.
33. Framed or hung mirrors are preferred, although plate glass works in ultra modern styles. Mirrors used on walls or ceilings are a turn off.
34. Colors are in, but soft is the word. Soft greens, yellows, earth tones and creams create a serene background that works with all styles. Complex colors, with more colors in the mix, are a more interesting choice. Deeply saturated colors, such as plums and reds, are used in moderation.
35. Flat paint on walls hides flaws and creates a designer look. Shiny is out. Soft whites are safe for trim.
36. Faux finishes are out. Often these do not turn out as well as expected, and are difficult to maintain. The same (or similar) wall color through adjoining spaces creates a more spacious feeling.
37. Historic paint colors such as sage greens, beiges, muted yellows, and grays work well on the exterior. Bold or harsh colors are a turn-off to most buyers.
38. Wallpaper is problematic and harder to change than paint. Very often it does not fit the buyer’s taste. Heavily textured walls and popcorn ceilings are totally out.
39. Buyers want more windows, natural light, and a greater connection with the outdoors. People today are more discriminating about the quality of light. Windows on two sides of the room balance the lighting and reduce glare.
40. One light in the middle of the room will not do. Under cabinet task lighting is appreciated. Security lighting is important. Wall sconces offer soft ambient lighting. Recessed cans provide area light. Dimmers help to control the lighting.
41. Light fixtures are a decorative element in all styles. Retro fixtures are interesting decorative features in 1930’s craftsman and 1950’s ranch styles.
42. Clean, modern fixtures, such as pendant lights, recessed cans, and wire string lights compliment the urban look. Industrial metal fixtures are in. The un-decorated look of metal or stainless steel is being used with modern and rustic styles.
43. Heavy drapes are out. Light cotton, linen or silk drapes are used. Or, wood blinds. Or nothing. Retro woven wood blinds have made a comeback. Mini blinds are very yesterday.
44. Bath fixtures are finished in rustic bronze, nickel, or chrome. Old style two-handled faucets and farmhouse sinks are in style.
45. Bath sinks may be glass bowls, granite, stone, stainless or traditional china. Free standing tubs are in. Pedestal and wall hung lavatories are in. Cultured marble is out.
46. With fuel costs going up, energy efficiency is important. Buyers want high efficiency AC, good insulation, low-e glass, programmable thermostats, double pane windows, and ceiling fans.
47. Effective passive solar orientation is a great advantage. It shows a smart planning and use of natural solar energy. No one wants foil on windows or stick-on window film.
48. Instant hot water is a perk that buyers like, as are drinking water filters.
49. Do remove solar screens when they are not needed, such as under patio roofs, porches or shade trees. Light is more in demand than ever.
50. Screened porches are back. They create a fun, multi purpose space that is both indoors and outdoors.

Decorating a baby room may be a time where you can let your imaginations run wild. After all, it can be fun playing with so many ideas for the baby room. However it can bewildering and intimidating task for some parents. Why? Part of the reason is because there are so many nursery decorations ideas available on the market. Choosing the right items for your home can be tricky.
Keeping certain rules in mind when decorating can help make the activity easy as well as rewarding.
The very first thing you have to consider when decorating a baby room is safety. You may really want to create an old fashioned nursery filled with quilts for infants and retro toys. However, you should not fill the nursery with antique baby furniture, especially if they are going to be used.
Many of the older cribs and children’s furniture do not meet today’s safety guidelines. Even newer items can fall short. It is crucial to check the safety guidelines before making a purchase. As a rule of thumb, it is usually best to buy furnishings new when decorating a baby room. Borrowed items and used products can lead to trouble.
Penny pinchers may argue that you can research which items are up to par as far as safety standards are concerned. However, many of the new nursery furniture actually save you money in the long run. Today’s cribs commonly convert to toddler beds and some will even convert to a regular twin sized bed.
Think of all of the money you will save over the years by buying a convertible crib. These quality nursery items grow with your child. You only have to make one purchase. Investing in expensive furnishings like cribs and chests is a good idea when decorating a room. These investments will pay off eventually.
Some items actually can be purchased second hand. Many people save quite a bit of money by going to garage sales and swap meets. Items that are commonly purchased at such functions include picture frames, bedding, wall art, toys and lamps. These items can really come in handy when decorating a baby room and they don’t need to be brand new.
Perhaps checking with some experienced moms is the easiest way to get help in decorating a baby room. Many moms love to share their ideas and show off their knowledge and how to. Talking with other moms can really give you ideas and inspirations on how you can make a special nursery room for your child.

Chair refinishing is a great idea because everybody has chairs. There are as many kinds and styles of chairs as you could possibly think of. In The united states alone there dozens of different kinds and materials to choose from, there are stools, benches swivel chairs reclining chairs wood ones metal ones wicker and rattan, Thomas Chippendale chairs, Duncan Fyfe chairs too, and Sheridan chairs as well, just to name a few. By far the most common would be some type of Classic wooden chair.
Wood is a valuable and renewable resource that has been used extensively for thousands of years and continues to be a good choice and that is the material we will be focusing on today.
Of the multiple millions of wooden chairs currently in use today, thousands and thousands will be discarded for no better reason than their owners don’t know what to do to keep them in good and serviceable condition. In days gone by the idea of discarding otherwise good stuff just because of issues of wear was unthinkable. Thankfully there has been a trend toward better stewardship and most people have understood the folly of the disposable mindset of the eighties and nineties.
When an otherwise good set of chairs begins to show wear and the finish becomes ugly, there is a process where the worn finish may be removed and another fresh finish can be reapplied, this is what is meant when we speak of refinishing. The variety of finish colors and sheens are almost endless. Often through refinishing your chairs they take on the appearance of completely different chairs, almost unrecognizable to most people as the previous pieces. For example, in the 1960’s the use of early American decor called for an extremely orange color that was commonly used on birch and maple chairs. The early American stain became so identified with that period that when the early American phase passed, nobody seemed to want those old orange maple chairs, so we refinished hundreds of them.
Then again around 1970 or so the phase of dark pine furniture came into vogue, many people never even noticed that the same chairs from the sixties were now being finished in a tone more in keeping with the design trend of the day and millions of chairs continued to be sold with almost no design change, the only real difference was the color. Again in the late eighties the trend toward Cherry reached full effect and furniture colors changed again.
So it becomes more and more understandable, that when one owns otherwise good chairs that have become a little worn, it makes good sense to consider refinishing.
Although great chairs are available at finer stores today, the Older chairs typically offer well-seasoned wood, good quality joints and workmanship of a higher level than most made today, so think twice before you decide to pony up your hard earned dollars for new ones, and you too can enjoy better quality chairs for less money than you thought Possible.

Choosing the right decor for your home can be a thankless task, especially if there are two or more people trying to agree on the same thing. As far as window blinds are concerned, this is an area that can cause a few arguments. Have you ever considered the addition of bamboo blinds to your home’s window dressing?
Bamboo blinds offer an inexpensive way to spruce up even the dreariest outlook and environmentally, they are the “ants pants.” So where do you start looking? The internet of course! A simple search will get you a ton of results and while the only drawback is the fact you can’t touch and feel the product, sticking with the best known and more reputable companies should see your net shopping experience become a satisfying one.
Bamboo Blinds - What’s Available?
Depending on whether you’re after traditional Japanese blinds or prefer the non traditional product, the choice is extensive. Japanese bamboo blinds are woven together in very thin shafts and pricing depends a lot on the way they are put together. Hand woven blinds may cost you a little more that machine produced product but the end result is quite stunning and many people decide the extra cost is worth the effort. This is not taking anything away from the latter.
Creating a look and feel in the home at affordable cost is the aim with bamboo blinds. Can they be drawn up or down? Sure can. With roll up blinds, the slats again are quite thin and depending on how much light or how much privacy you desire, are extremely user friendly.
Bamboo blinds and shades have certainly been enjoying a rise in popularity in recent years and it’s not hard to comprehend why. Apart from their inexpensive nature, they offer a wide and diversified natural texture while the choice of colours is quite fantastic. The fact that bamboo does offer so much in the way of texture and color variety may be the only drawback shopping for it online. Keep in mind that when looking at samples online and there is a color that takes your fancy, be very specific when choosing and make it clear to the supplier exactly what you want. It could be that the green color that took your fancy so much in the sample photo may in fact alter slightly by the time the product is delivered to your home.
Environmentally, bamboo has many advantages over rival materials. The fact it can reach maturity in less than six years makes it the ideal building material. Unlike traditional hardwood trees which can take up to and in some cases, over a century to mature, bamboo speeds up the end users delayed gratification process.
While bamboo offers plenty of durability and toughness, always be clear with your supplier about the warranty process. While a lifetime warranty may be rare, be sure to check this important aspect and either an extended or limited lifetime warranty should be sought. This is just part of your due diligence process and while warranties are normally part and parcel of these type of business transactions, it doesn’t hurt to check.
All in all, bamboo blinds will bring a little exotic decor to your home. As for looks, they will in most cases enhance any surrounding areas appearance.

One of the cooler things brought on by advent of Polynesian tiki culture is the renowned tiki bar. Giving off an air reminiscent of ancient tribal surroundings, a tiki bar is an awesome place to enjoy and lose yourself to another domain.
For those unfamiliar with this modern-day tropical delight, a tiki bar is usually modeled after a tiki hut. A distinctive structure usually made with bamboo and a special roof made of woven grass or leaves, known as a thatched roof. The bar adorned with distinctive tiki decor and tiki furniture which gives it such a unique style and appearance.
The great thing about tiki bars is feeling off being on vacation in some exotic locale, all without having to actually go off to some remote place and spending big bucks in the process. The somewhat weird ambiance and almost otherworldly atmosphere invoked by the tiki bar can make a wonderful setting for some truly memorable parties!
Tiki enthusiast can visit these bars in many different places as they’re quickly gaining in popularity. There’s nothing like slipping off to the Caribbean for a drink or two to escape that blistering blizzard just outside those tiki doors.
Those who love going to tiki bars can even build their own private tiki bar all in comfort of their own home. Whether by the pool or in the basement, having a private tiki bar is huge load of fun and source of pride. Tiki bar owners are sure to be very popular around the neighborhood and shouldn’t be surprised to constantly have a few guest wanting share in on the fun and party.
So what exactly makes a tiki bar tick, so to speak? Those interested in owning their own tiki bar or those that already run one should know that the most important thing is to maintain the wonderful tiki atmosphere by making sure their tiki bar is well decorated with special tiki decor items. The most important of these being the tiki furniture as these form the backbone and foundation of well maintained tiki bar.
There are various forms of tiki furniture, all with different designs, functions, and sizes. They can be made from a variety of different materials, ranging from plywood and cement, to the more exotic materials such as bamboo and specialty rocks.
One of the most important pieces of furniture is of course, the actual bar itself. This should be given particularly vital attention to quality as this is the centerpiece of the entire establishment.
For the bar, bamboo is usually the way to go. There’s something about that wonder plant that exudes island glamour. Bamboo bars can be made partly or completely of bamboo and are completed by the distinct thatched roof.
As for the bar counter, some are made of plywood or tied up pieces of bamboo. You can try using something special such lava rocks to make it extra special.
Tiki totem poles of ancient, Polynesian gods make the perfect bar stools to amuse and slightly frighten would-be bar patrons. These pieces are meticulously carved into the likeness of scowling gods or moai (disembodied head monoliths). These bar stools can also come with tapa seat cloth for added authenticity.
Another cool trick is to place umbrellas on the table or other furniture and then to cover the umbrellas with thatch umbrella covers to give the look of a tropical island.
There is a lot of wonderful tiki furniture available to fill your bar with. Things like carved moai tables topped with funky tiki lamps can contribute to making your bar a success.
It is also important to make use of good lighting in your tiki bar. Though be careful when using bamboo torches or any fire hazards. Tiki bars along with containing large amounts of alcohol are commonly made out of rather flammable materials so be sure to take the proper precautions less your tiki paraiso turns in a tiki inferno.
Obtaining tiki furniture and other decor is fortunately easier now than it has ever been, thanks to the internet. Ready made furniture as well customizable orders and building plans are readily available online. Just be sure to research beforehand that the site your ordering from is reputable.
Tiki bars are only as good as their furniture so tiki bar owners should be sure to invest in quality tiki furniture to maximize the bars potential.

Go to your local hardware store. Browse through the cabinet knobs. It is amazing that we live in a society which allows us to choose what design we prefer to our cabinet knob. You see various designs and it is up to you which one you get. Cabinet knobs no longer come in a generic form. It has been revamped to express the buyer’s personality.
A cabinet knob is attached to a drawer and a closet. It aids the person in opening the drawer and closet without any trouble. Cabinet knobs come in various colors, structures and designs.
Consider shopping for cabinet knobs a serious matter. Are you chic or manly? Are you into plain designs or would you like something similar to that of the time of the renaissance? Will there be different doorknobs to each room? Perhaps you are thinking of having those animal designs for the nursery?
Some are circular which makes it easier for you to enclose your whole fist in it and then pull the drawer open.
Some are elongated and has a space in between the end of the knob and the drawer. In that space, you fixate your fingers and then pull.
Some are like that of a knocker in castle gates. These are the ones that have a circular design and you see a loose hoop hanging by it. You hold on to that loose hoop and pull.
Some has a square shape. You hold on to that shape and exert what seems to be no effort in opening your drawers and your cabinets.
If you want to be different, you can see various designs like that of animals. There are cabinet knobs with a bull design. The head of the bull is found in the center and you hold on to the horns to pull the drawer and the cabinet open.
There are also heads of animals such as bears, dogs, tigers and cats. It is similar to that of the circular cabinet knobs where you enclose your fist in order to open the cabinet.
With so many choices to choose from, you eventually get the best one which reflects your personality and your lifestyle. Shopping for cabinet doorknobs has become shopping for shoes.
Home-owners usually get the same doorknob to each room so that there will be balance and symmetry from one room to the next.
Just like cleaning the floor of your house, you must also take the time to clean your doorknobs. Most of the time we forget to do so because it is hardly seen and is there in the corner. And then again, cabinet knobs usually come in brass and in steel. If you don’t wipe it clean on a regular basis, it might rust eventually.
Avoid using material that could trigger rusting to your cabinet doorknob. If your doorknob is painted, double check if some spaces are already chipped. Try to maintain the beauty of your cabinet and also do your best to not overlook the cabinet doorknob.
A cabinet doorknob is like that of your fingernails. It is a part of your body - although small can still be seen. Just how you care for your hand and your skin, you must also care for your fingernails on the same level.
The minute you see a damage, have it repaired eventually. If it is a chipped paint, you can always have it coated. If it is rusty, try to see if it is still manageable.
Some obsessive compulsive customers eventually go back to their hardware store and buy new stocks of cabinet doorknobs if theirs have lost its touch of magnificence and perfection. After all, they are not pricey anyway. Prices for cabinet doorknobs range $3 to $7. The elaborate designs are around $8 a piece.
In a nutshell, a cabinet doorknob is still part of the house. Cabinet doorknobs as small as they are can still say something about your personality to your guests. A well-maintained cabinet must also be reflected on its knob, just as well-maintained hand is reflected on its fingernails.
If you want, you can always bring someone along when you buy your cabinet doorknob. Like choosing china, browsing for the right cabinet doorknob for you must also take the same time, effort, focus and concentration from you - as little as it might be. You know what they say? Be it little, it still says something big.

Curtains are a beautiful, elegant part of any home. They are one of those small, warm touches necessary to transform a house from someplace where you simply stay, to a place where you feel at home. When looking for a window curtain design for your home, you want to make sure you find the right one to give your place the proper atmosphere of warmth and comfort. Here are a few tips regarding the components of various curtain designs, and some ideas to help you decide on a Look for your curtains.
Curtain Rods - regarding curtain rods, some decorative ideas include using brass designs at the ends of the rod, or even exotic carvings. Also, curtain rods aren’t just a matter of picking something to hang your curtains from. You can actually buy matched sets of curtain rods that will allow you to layer multiple curtains in tiers, giving you more creative options when it comes to your design.
Curtain Ties - curtain ties hold back the curtains from the window, allowing sunlight in. More than this, however, the PLACEMENT of a tie can be itself a decorative touch. Some people for example split the curtain in the middle of the window and use ties to hold the curtains at the edges of the window, essentially framing it.
Others use a single tie and a single piece of fabric, tying the curtain to one side, giving the window a unique look that can be likened to a woman wearing a single-strap dress. The height of the ties also allows some control over the pattern of the curtain. While usually placed in the middle of the height of the window, ties can be placed higher up the curtain to allow the fabric to billow out, or can be placed lower down to give the curtain a more fluffy effect.
Curtain Fabric - The actual fabrics used in the curtain are important, obviously. The choices to explore are entirely to your taste. You can choose from a wide variety of cloths, from warm, down to earth choices like cotton, to the more elegant options of silk, satin, and lace. The color and design patterns on the fabric are likewise another area to let your creativity take free rein.
Some people for example prefer solid earth colors, while others prefer brighter ones on their curtains. Solid colors aside, floral print curtains enjoy a lot of popularity as well. Taking into account the additional layering options provided by using multiple curtain rods and ties, it’s also possible to mix and match different fabrics and different colors to further give your home’s window curtains a unique appeal.
The above three are the basic, simple components of any window curtain set. Aside from them, the cut of the cloth and the manner in which it falls are also factors to take into account when looking for a window design. Here are a few of the more popular window design types that you can choose from that will be readily available from most curtain manufacturers:
Valance - a valance is not a curtain per se, but rather is a short drapery lain across the top of the window. It accents the curtain across the supporting rod, and adds a nice, neat little layering effect.
Swag - swag curtains are designed with a reverse V-shaped cut across the bottom. This means that the window itself is displayed between the 2 sides of the V, which themselves frame the window beautifully.
Panel Curtain - this is the classic type of curtain composed of a flat, square piece of cloth that hangs down from the curtain rod.
Ruffle - ruffle curtains are designs that have a vertical rippling effect, making the window curtain look like it’s flowing instead of looking like just a piece of hanging cloth.
Sheer - Sheer curtains are made from semi-transparent material, and are popular because they let sunlight in easily and have an ethereal and relaxing quality about their appearance.
Scarf Curtains - this design is similar to a Valence in that it’s main feature is a piece of fabric supported across the rod to accentuate the main curtain near the top. But where a valence is generally a square piece of additional paneling, a scarf curtain’s accent is tied tightly upwards at the ends of the curtain rod, allowing only the central part of the scarf to cascade downwards.
The designs given above are not mutually exclusive to each other; rather, they themselves can be mix and matched by a creative mind to make even more elaborate designs. For example, you can go with a Ruffled Panel Curtain made of Sheer Fabric, or a Swag Curtain with a Scarf to accentuate it. These are just a few samples of the things you can do.

What’s a fireplace without a fireplace mantel? It would be a lonely hole in the wall were light comes from. Creepy isn’t it? A fireplace mantel is a substantial part of the whole fireplace setup of a home. Without the mantel, there wouldn’t be much to be excited about a fireplace.
Fireplaces have been focal points of attraction in the house. However, it is the fireplace mantel that really brings out the beauty of a fireplace. It serves a fireplace like a frame serves a picture. A proper mantel can also boost up the value of the house as an asset because it brings out the beauty of the house’ centerpiece.
Fireplace mantels have long been around, dating back to the Renaissance Period in Italy. The earliest designs were inspired by the architectural supremacy of the Greeks and the Romans. These designs were heavily embroidered with lavish designs and accessories. During the advent of the Edwardian era, the designs of mantels became more subtle. Today, design and materials come together to determine the overall look of the fireplace mantels.
There are two main things to consider when choosing the proper mantel for your fireplace. An improperly chosen and installed fireplace mantel is as bad as not having one at all.
Here are some important factors to look at:
-Type of mantel
Choosing the right type of mantel for your fireplace is the most important factor to look at. Different house motifs require different types of fireplace mantels. For older houses which are preserved well (which owners would want to further preserve) an antique fireplace mantel would be suitable. We are referring to colonial-style houses. The antique mantels have this certain timeless quality in them that brings back the designs of the older eras.
In determining the right type of mantel, people should first look at whether they would like to have a mantel shelf or a surround mantel (with designs on the side). Mantel shelves work differently in the sense that they accentuate the fireplace like a crown uplifts a king. The shelves are usually holds the prized possessions of the homeowner and display them for the visitors to see. Mantel surrounds accentuate the fireplace by giving dimensions to the sides of the fireplace.
-Material
Choosing the material to be used in the fireplace mantel is as important as choosing the design of the mantel. There are several materials which have become popular in terms of fireplace mantels. Let’s take a look at wooden mantels first.
After the First World War, wooden mantels started gaining popularity throughout the world. The main reason why it ascended in terms of popularity is that wooden mantels are relatively easy to install (as compared to stone or marble). Oak is perhaps the most popular kind of wood that is used in fireplace mantels because of its superior quality. Fiberboard is gaining popularity as an alternative material because it is cheap and elegant looking material.
A good thing about wooden mantels is that one can choose the kind of varnish or paint color that will be used. A downside in using wood as a mantel is that wood is combustible. One should check the local fire department with regards to the regulations in using wood as a fireplace mantel.
Stone mantels are one of the oldest fireplace mantels. The use of stone as a material for mantels can be traced back to the 16th century. The most popular kinds of stones that are used for mantels are marble, slate granite and limestone. However, the use of these stones can be quite heavy for one’s pockets. Cast stone, which is a pre-fabricated kind of stone, is popular today since it is very cheap as compared to the other stones. It resembles the expensive stones at a least-costly price. Cast stone mantels are usually priced starting at seven hundred dollars.
The fireplace mantel is as equally important as the fireplace itself, perhaps not in terms of functionality, but definitely in terms of aesthetics. Properly choosing the right type of mantel and the right materials are the two most important things in installing a fireplace mantel. Mantels can really be costly but they will really bring out the beauty of a house and increase its value.

Even if you are hopelessly landlocked, you can bring the refreshing feel of a cool sea breeze into your space with coastal decorating. Once found mostly in seaside regions, this decor style’s popularity has now transcended geography, meaning that homes boasting coastal rooms can be found in every part of the country.
But today’s updated coastal decorating style is much more sophisticated than the kitschy, nautically-themed rooms that defined this style in the past. Today’s coastal decorating is characterized more by a beach-inspired palette than by an over reliance on garish beach-themed knickknacks.
A few of your beach memorabilia pieces like a beautiful conk shell, starfish, and maybe a lighthouse or nautical flag are not out of the realm of possibility. Just remember not to over do it.
The foundation of the updated coastal decor that is popular today is a thematic color scheme that calls on sea blues, crisp whites, sandy tans and an array of natural fibers to bring the outdoors inside. The look of an effectively decorated coastal environment is cozy but uncluttered, pairing interesting, sea-themed accents and art with crisp backgrounds.
A textured but sleek wall covering, such as white beadboard, provides the perfect contrast for coastal decor. Bold natural textures in the form of grasses and fibers make excellent floor coverings and window treatments for coastal rooms, although it is recommended to leave windows and doors as unfettered as possible to heighten the play of sunlight within the room.
Traditionally, nautical-themed accessories have been a key part of coastal decor, but the updated version of this style demands a less cluttered look. Experts suggest shopping at flea markets or second-hand stores to find interesting items to highlight.
Small collections of items such as seashells can enhance the style, but try not to go overboard, as it were — group themed collections together to heighten their impact and reduce the risk of sensory overload.
Simply imagine yourself on your own fantasy island. Or, if you’re lucky enough, look out your window. See the emerald green water, the bubbling white of the waves crashing to the tan sandy beach and look up to the crisp blue sky. Now, hold that vision and recreate that feeling into the decor of the room of your choice.
The feeling of a coastal room should be crisp, clean, and refreshing — assess your space with a discerning eye and edit out anything that detracts from the intended effect of calming, sea-themed bliss.

Before, they were used to simply serve their purpose - hang curtains. Today, curtain rods are more than just a tool. They have evolved into a more functional, more sophisticated devices that do not just hang curtains but also compliment and enhance the overall effect of the drapes.
Showing more skin, rods are no longer the typical metal or wooden sticks used to hang curtains. They have evolved into remarkable works of skill or talent, showing every design as an intricate sketch of masterpiece.
Wooden curtain rods are now made more sophisticated and classy. Most of them are handmade and crafted with the most top-rated materials to bring out the beauty of the wooden material.
Various designs were sculptured in the wood, with different glaze materials or varnish as the finishing touches. Hence, you can make either a Victorian or a Western-inspired window with rods that were made from high-quality wooden materials.
On the other hand, the solid and powerful effect of metal curtain rods is no longer confined to the usual plain metal stick. With the growing popularity of metal rods, consumers now have more choices. They can choose from a wide array of metal rods such as solid brass, chrome, graphite with brass, and brushed chrome.
With a wider range of choices, more and more manufacturers tried to develop newer, fresher, and more exquisite designs to compliment, contrast, or enhance the beauty of curtains. They can even modify plain curtains by transforming them into something more elegant.
Installing curtain rods has also evolved into an innovation, bringing ease and convenience in mounting rods on walls, woods, or other types of surfaces. Hence, whether you live in a castle, cabin, or the classic abode, there is certainly a good curtain rod that will suit your taste, your style, and of course, your curtains.
However, curtain rods do not just differ according to their designs or structures. They also differ in sizes and shapes. Hence, it is important to measure your windows first before you go out and buy your rods.
Here are some things you must consider when buying curtain rods:
1. Your windows
Your windows have different sizes, according to your plan when you were just building your house. And even if you have bought a ready-made house, window sizes are not standard for all types of houses. Hence, it is extremely important to measure your windows first before you start buying your rods.
All you have to do is to measure the outside part of your window. This is where you will mount your curtain rods. It is best to have the correct size than to waste time and money by going back to the store just because you have to wrong size.
Keep in mind that as a rule, your rods should always be longer than your window by as much as 5 inches. This ensures total coverage for your windows.
2. Your curtains
Of course, you should never start buying the rods without looking first at the curtains that you will use. The types of curtains you will use will determine the type of rod that you have to buy.
For example, if you will be using the typical designs of curtains that flow straight down the wall, you will have to buy a chrome curtain rod, for heavier drapes, you need to buy stronger metals such as graphite with brass or solid brass.
3. Strength of the curtain rod
You would not want your curtains sagged unattractively down your windows, right? Hence, to avoid such dilemma, it is best to choose rods according to their strength and capacity to hold a certain type of drapes or curtains.
For heavier curtains, it is best to choose stronger, more solid rods. Supporting devices should also be considered. These brackets provide end-to-end support for the rod, as well as support for the middle portion of the curtain rod.
4. Your budget
Curtain rods can be very expensive especially if they were made from high-quality materials. Hence, if you cannot afford to buy those expensive kinds, it is best to stick the ordinary.
Keep in mind that decorating your home with good sets of curtain rods can change the way people will look at it. However, it does not necessarily mean that you have to spend more than what you can afford just to decorate your house.
So the next time you buy your curtain rods, consider these factors and you will definitely make a big difference. Even if curtain rods are generally seen as something that holds up your curtains, they can also reflect the kind of personality that you have.

If you’ve always had an affinity for up-to-the minute, cutting-edge design, contemporary decorating may be the best way for you to translate your aesthetic preferences into a home environment that reflects your taste. Contemporary decor draws upon the sleek lines and bold statements that were originated in the mid-twentieth century by the luminaries of modern design.
Although many people associate contemporary decor with an avant-garde, almost futuristic look, this is but one point along a broad spectrum of styles that are referred to as contemporary, and most people find that a stylized, u
