Beatin’ The Blues And Bringin’ In The Bucks

My first love is music, hands down. I front a band called You Can Call Me Al (in honor of that wonderful musician, Paul Simon — one of my greatest influences). I play guitar, sing and play alto saxophone, depending on the gig, and I love doing all three.

There’s nothing quite like getting up on stage and belting out the blues while people sing along, dance, drink and laugh in the audience. It’s such a rush to see people having fun in the crowd! The problem is, for a bunch of aging hippies like me and my band mates, the tip jar rarely covers the night’s beer consumption, let alone pays the bills.

That’s all right, though, because I’m lucky. I’ve got another love, which is writing, and I might have finally found a way to something I love and actually make some real income! I’ve been waiting for a gig like this. And I’m so excited that it’s finally here!

I’ve actually been writing articles about my music (and my day job) for a few months now. I’ve checked out several affiliate programs, so I’ll start by talking about some of those. The first one I found is called Article Post Robot. It’s a goofy name, but they have three different affiliate programs you can sign up for. The first gives you 40 percent, or $40-$50, of every product sold on your site. The second one is also 40 percent, at $35 to $40, and the third gives only 25 percent, estimated at about $8 per sale. I’m feelin’ the first two; maybe not so much the third one.

The first program is an affiliation of Article Post Robot itself, a software system you purchase that allows you to post articles on sites around the Web. Personally I’ve been down that road with the software, but I still might be willing to join their affiliate program!

Some people prefer to use software that lets them control where their articles end up. At this point, I’m looking for the widest distribution to the largest lists possible. Moving on!

Another site I am looking at is called iSnare. They do it a little differently, using a referral rather than a straight-out affiliate program. It works like this: For everyone you refer to use iSnare’s service (everyone who then purchases article posts) you earn free article post slots. You get one post for every five slots your referral buys, six for every 40 slots on up to 10 for 100 slots purchased.

There is an option to submit articles for free on iSnare, and like any new system I explore that’s the one I’ll start with. To be distributed to the entire list, you must pay a fee for your post. Definitely an option — if I like what they have to offer after a little more exploration.

I read about Article Marketer when researching Jason Develvis’s website, Adventures in IM. He has a lot of great advice about how to market yourself online, and he is an affiliate of Article Marketer, so I decided to check them out.

Article Marketer has a very attractive affiliate program. You put their links up on your site, and they pay you 50 percent their sales made through your website. Then, if one of your referrals becomes an affiliate, you get 5 percent of those sales too! Seems almost like they’re giving away too much. I wonder if there’s a catch.

I’ve read through their spiel and it seems pretty air-tight, but again I’m a skeptic. I’m going to sign up for their free service before I make a commitment to post their links on my precious blog.

You don’t always have to buy the product. Try contacting the product owner, explain that you wan’t to help them sell their product and ask for a copy in order that you may review it. If all else fails, buy the product, you will soon make your money back in affiliate sales.

2. Promoting the Wrong Affiliate Product - I see affiliate programs out there offering commissions as low as 5% on $30 products. Personally I would not go near these. Some internet marketers will offer commissions as high as 75% to get you to sell their wares. 50-75% is common for info products and this is what you should be aiming for when starting out.

It is also prudent to check how successful sales of the product has been. You can be almost certain that if there are a lot online marketers selling a service that it has proven it’s ability to sell to a target market. If you chose a product with either low commissions or a crappy sales record then you will be losing a lot of money on both counts. The important thing to remember is that you can make a lot more money out of the same workload IF you make the right decisions.

It is all too easy to sign up for every new service that comes along promising instant profits for affiliates. You could find yourself a member of tens of affiliate programs and no further on in terms of increased income.

Affiliate marketing can be extremely lucrative as we all know, but when you’re just starting out it can be daunting looking for affiliate products or programs to promote because most of them are already being heavily promoted by more experienced affiliate marketers than yourself.

So how can you find untapped, and therefore potentially highly profitable products to promote as an affiliate?

Well let’s start off with Clickbank, the leading retailer of digital products, and one of the most popular affiliate networks.

You’re probably wondering why I’m mentioning Clickbank, as most of these products have incredibly fierce competition, but because they sell so many products there are still some very profitable opportunities.

For example, most people naturally go straight to the best-selling products in each category to find products to promote. However, while it’s a natural assumption to make that all the best products on Clickbank are the biggest sellers, you will often find some hidden gems that haven’t yet taken off for whatever reason, that you can make very good profits from promoting on PPC search engines, in email promotions, on your websites, etc.

That’s one way of profiting from Clickbank products. An even better way is to find new products and promote them heavily as soon as they go on sale, particularly the quality products that have strong sales pages. I’m not talking about the internet marketing / make money products here, as these are often heavily promoted by the internet marketing gurus, but the various different niche products which have far less competition.

This can be extremely lucrative, and is now very easy to do because there are specialist sites that will allow you to constantly scan for any new products that have just entered the marketplace.

Do a search for ‘affiliate networks’ and you will come across hundreds of different affiliate networks, each of which will often list plenty of companies and their respective products that you can promote as an affiliate.

These networks present plenty of opportunities because the sheer volume of companies out there that have an affiliate program means that there will inevitably be some companies that are under-represented by affiliates, particularly on Google Adwords and other PPC search engines.

This is particularly true outside of the US, where you will generally find that there is far less competition in both the organic search results and the paid search results. Furthermore, if you look outside of the US, and look out for companies that don’t belong to an affiliate network but instead have their own individual affiliate program, you can make substantial profits as you will have far fewer competitors.

This leads me on to my final point - promoting affiliate programs in non-English speaking countries. While you will find slightly less competition promoting affiliate products in countries like the UK, Canada and Australia, you will find that you will have substantially less competition in the various non-English speaking countries of the world.

This is potentially an absolute goldmine. The problem you have of course is not finding suitable products, but translating your sales page or website into a different language. Most translation software simply won’t cut it as they very rarely translate perfectly into the natural language, and therefore will look amateurish, which will adversely affect your affiliate commissions.

The best way of translating your website, therefore, is by going directly to a native in-country translator. You can do this either through making friends with someone from that country over the internet, or by going to one of the many freelance sites out there and hiring someone to do the work for you.

Remember there are so many opportunities out there because you will never run out of companies to promote.
