Seven Awesome Kitchen Gadgets

Gadgets and Gizmos No Comments

Everyone who cooks can use some of these practical, time saving kitchen tools. While you can get by with a bare bones kitchen and a few old pots and pans, a lot of dishes are harder to make or more time consuming to prepare. The items in this list can free up some of your time, help you make delicious meals, store leftovers and even make the kitchen a fun place. So without further ado, here are some of my favorite kitchen gadgets. I hope you like them.

1.Bread Maker. Imagine getting up in the morning to the smell of freshly baked bread, ready for you to take out of the machine and slice up for toast or for lunch sandwiches. And all you had to do was load the ingredients the night before, then set the timer.

2.Automatic Coffee Maker. This goes well with the bread maker. Add coffee grounds and water, set the clock and have coffee waiting for you when you stumble out of bed in the morning. Rise and shine!

3.High Quality Knife Set. I used to make do with an old set of mismatched knives given to me without a knife block. Some of the handles were loose, and they had to be stored in a drawer. The new set sits on the counter top. The edges stay sharp longer, and the set contains knives for most needs. More room in the drawer, too.

4.Plastic Food Containers. With a set of containers for food storage, saving leftovers is much easier. Many have lids with vents, for use in microwaves. Another way to use them is to freeze food for future use. They look better than old margarine and yogurt containers, too.

5.Immersion Blender. These hand-held gadgets can be placed in large drinking glasses, pots, or mixing bowls. You can mix drinks, baking ingredients, gravies or even whip potatoes. They take up less space and are easier to clean than traditional blenders as well.

6.Toaster Oven. A toaster oven can cook toasted items with toppings, like garlic bread and mini pizzas, as well as make toast. Small baking projects are possible too, if you don’t want to or can’t use a larger oven.

7.Sandwich Grill. For grilled cheese, tuna melts and patty melts, these grills seal the edge of the sandwich so cheese and other things can’t leak out.

These are some of the kitchen gadgets I like to use myself. For the larger items, maybe you can borrow one to test drive it before you buy. That is what I did with the bread maker. Our food containers, coffee maker and hand blender see daily use, and the toaster oven and sandwich grill once or twice a week. All in all, a good investment for my family. Happy cooking!

What’s In A Gadget Review For A Woman

Gadgets and Gizmos No Comments

There are two different sorts of men. There are your basic manly men who move from being twelve to fifty in one swift move and don’t see the bit in between. You marry the man with the designer stubble and promising career and the next thing you know you have a middle aged balding man with a paunch and a constantly serious scowl on his face. And this is for one reason only.

You married the wrong man. You should have married the other type. The one who knows exactly how to nurture his inner child. Yes, women who have been through the marriage process once will know that a lumbering great man that stopped developing his maturity at twelve can be difficult, they need constant reminders to put down the toilet seat, to put the top on the toothpaste and to pick up their laundry but they are infinitely more fun than the boring one with the paunch.

So, in my humble opinion, let that twelve year old out for at least one day a week and the whole man will be much more productive in the long wrong. But how to do this? My tip is to let him indulge the child in him - this child will want to play with toys and gadgets, it will want to take things apart, build them back up and probably want to tell you all about it too. This is the point where it is fully acceptable to have your iPod in place and not at regular moments while looking interested but glazed - don’t worry, he won’t notice.

Just how are you expected to know what toys to provide? Well, pick up a lads mag (not that sort) and check out the gadget reviews. You will find a whole selection in a variety of price ranges and you will also get a good idea from the gadget review what type depending on the mood.

The mood is something that you will learn to not only assess over time, but use to your advantage. Read the gadget reviews and start him off with something simple. If he’s taken to dismantling things around the house from boredom, check out the gadget review for construction toys . When playtime is over, you stand a pretty good chance of getting that toaster fixed or those shelves up as he will be all buoyed up from his sense of achievement and you will get the jobs around the house done without having to nag.

If he’s in a stressy mood, read the gadget reviews to find something that he can take his frustration out on. Remote control cars are pretty good for this. They cater to the lazy teenager inside him but also allow him to vent his pent up frustration in a little road rage session without any criminal damages cases against him.

For the laid back man that needs a bit of oomph, find him a toy that is simple. Electronic gadgets are great for this, he can lay back on the sofa all afternoon and get nothing more than repetitive strain injury on his fingers from programming a fiddly new phone, music player or the like.

Of course, there will be many a weekend when you need him out from under your feet while you get on with stuff round the house. For this, I recommend a go-go gadget type of present. Something like a jet powered back pack to bring out the daredevil James Bond that he knows is in there.

Revealed! Who Benefits Most Using Personal Defense Devices?

Gadgets and Gizmos No Comments

Who are likely targets for criminals? You would be correct, to some extent, if you answered “everyone.” There is no one person that is immune from crime, but there are segments of our society who stand a greater chance of a run in with a criminal or criminal act, than some others.

These more likely segments of our society, are a group that would benefit most by being familiar with ways to avoid being crime’s targets. It is highly recommended that this group [as should all] become familiar with crime through crime reports and follow the recommendations contained therein.

Obtaining some personal self-defense devices and learning how to use this technology is likewise, recommended.

“Personal defense technology? Sounds expensive. Is it?,” you ask. No, it is’nt in most cases.

To properly equip oneself with the necessary personal defense technology does not have to cost you an arm and a leg.

Well, who are the people that make up this segment of our population and why are they more vulnerable?

They are more likely to be a victim of crime for various reasons including there age, their occupation, the time of day they work, their daily routines [e.g. doing things at the same time, in the same place, in the same way] and the areas in which they live. This list is not inclusive and there are plenty of combinations of scenarios that would also make a person more vulnerable to crime.

Here is a short list of examples of groups of people and their occupations that would benefit from modern personal self-defense technology:

Senior citizens
Night Shift Workers
Taxi drivers
Disabled persons
Delivery drivers
Babysitters
Postal employees
Bar maids
Joggers
Tourist
Retail clerks
Students
Health workers

The above list is far from exhaustive. Why these certain groups are included in the list should be obvious to anyone giving it some thought.

It would be wise for our communities to get the word out to these segments of the population about their increased risk at being victims of crime and the availability of personal defense technology. But, judging on past experience, we know that is not always going to be the case.

It is for this reason that we also recommend everyone to get involved on a voluntary basis to support your local police and sheriff’s office and neighborhood watch programs.

It is recommended for every citizen to educate themselves and others about the ins and outs of crime and how to keep the public from becoming victims and not becoming statistics in a crime report.

iPod Battery Replacement

Gadgets and Gizmos No Comments

After the iPod hit the market, it seemed as if Apple could do no wrong. Now everyone, regardless of their software camp, could enjoy one of Apple’s classically cool and beautiful toys. It wasn’t until about 12 months after the iPod’s launch, when it came time to replace the first set of iPod batteries, that Apple hit a bump in their groove.

The iPod isn’t built for easy battery replacement like a cell phone. In order to replace the iPod battery, the casing must be completely removed, exposing all of the internal components and introducing risk of damage.

Apple initially offered a battery replacement service for $249. They later offered a one year extended warranty for $60 that covers the battery. However, it’s important to note that when Apple sends the replacement, it will be in a refurbished model iPod, not your original. Today you can find qualified iPod repair shops to replace the battery for as little as $59 or do-it-yourself kits between $19 and $39 depending on the model.

The caution with the do-it-yourself (DIY) kits however, is that the iPod wasn’t designed for the average user to change the battery. Plenty of people have been able to change their iPod batteries without problem while countless online forums divulge a long list of complications faced as a result of users trying to change the battery.

Many specialty iPod repair shops will do the replacement for little more than the cost of the battery itself. Some offer additional incentives such as consumer-friendly lifetime battery replacement program. Under the program, the company will replace the battery once a year for life. Even better, your iPod is back in your hands within 48 hours with 30% more power than Apple’s original battery.

Should you choose to replace the battery yourself, there are a few tips you’ll want to keep in mind:

- Some models like the iPod Nano require soldering directly onto the board. Be sure to check the details of the battery replacement before sending off for a DIY kit.

- Have a small thin tool on hand to pry apart the casing. Once the screws that hold the case together are removed, you still need to apply some force to open it and reveal the circuitry. Many have damaged their cases by trying to pry their iPods apart without the proper tools. Many replacement batteries come with special tools to help pry the case open.

- When disconnecting the battery, don’t remove the rubber pad located on the hard drive.

Regardless of the battery complications, people still love the fun and freedom that the iPod offers. Do a little research before deciding how to handle your battery replacement as it’s a routine that you’ll need to repeat about once every year. Even if you’re not thrilled about the fact that your iPod will need to go through major surgery every year, there are customer-friendly iPod specialty companies available to make the process smooth and simple.

iPods are More Than Portable Music Players

Gadgets and Gizmos No Comments

With the evolution of technology, companies like Apple have developed mini-multimedia devices called iPods. These small, but sturdy hand held media players have captured the attention of the world as they have sold over 42 million in recent years. They can now hold over 60 gigabytes of your favorite music, videos, data and files that you would like transferred from one pc to another.

There are wireless additions and open source software that can customize the operating system to handle applications designed by individual developers. The versatility of the iPods over palm pilots and other similar devices has made them valuable tools for work and play. It has been reported that some medical firms use them to transfer x-rays and client files from one practice to another while also being used to play medical videos for patient care. An iPod in the hand of a forward thinker can become a powerful tool, which can revolutionize work flow within many industries.

Training videos are another great use for the iPod and with the large storage capacity they can be used to coach through many medical procedures. For example, imagine ambulance services with personnel who carry iPods with videos that explain how to give CPR, deliver babies, perform tracheotomies, amputations or any other critical procedure just in case of emergency. This is just one way that this piece of technology can be used to save lives.

There really is no limit to the usefulness of the Apple iPod when creative imagination takes hold of one. There will always be, of course, the regular videos that it can play while you are on an airplane to a foreign country. It can hold more music than the average jukebox found at dance halls and social halls. It even categorizes your favorite genres and will quiz you about the very music downloaded into the iPod.

With wireless technologies becoming cheaper while covering wider ranges of distance, the iPod can keep constant connection within a corporate setting which can synchronize with everyone who uses the same information.

There are companies who can customize your iPod as well so that it matches your company logos or colors. Mostly the iPod will continue to be the toy that teens and young adults use to watch videos and listen to their favorite songs while adults add the customized features listed above. As storage devices, the possibilities are endless. How will you use yours?

Solutions for iPod Screen Repair

Gadgets and Gizmos No Comments

The release of the iPod Nano was an enormous hit for Apple, but also sparked controversy among its loyal followers. Customers began calling in record numbers about broken screens on the iPod Nano. Apple quickly discovered and fixed the problem then replaced the faulty players for free. Although iPod screen repair isn’t an epidemic, screens still break, crack, or scratch for one reason or another and must be replaced. Should you find yourself in this situation, you’ve got two different options; to do the repair yourself or send it to an iPod screen repair specialist.

Do it yourself iPod Screen repair:
For those who feel comfortable poking around the inner circuitry of their iPod, a do-it-yourself iPod screen repair kit might be an option. For about ten bucks, you can purchase a set of iPod-specific tools you’ll need to unscrew the casing and pry apart the two halves safely while the screen runs between $89 and $149 depending on the model.

While the process can be fairly straightforward for some, there is room for error when doing your own iPod screen repair. In order to remove the screen you’ll need to detach some of the pieces and pull the broken screen away from the logic board and attach the new one.

Send your iPod to an iPod repair specialist
Perhaps the most attractive benefit about sending your iPod off to a specialist for the screen repair is that they can troubleshoot the iPod to ensure that a new screen will in fact solve the problem. Often a broken screen is caused by a trauma, meaning the possibility of additional damage.

Some repair shops don’t charge any more for professional installation than the cost of the screen itself. Although you will pay a few bucks for shipping, you’ll be able to have a full diagnostic run and the screen replaced by a professional.

Isn’t iPod screen repair covered by my warranty?
Apple considers a broken screen misuse or accidental damage. Apple’s service repair page specifically states that “If your iPod’s LCD display is cracked due to accidental damage, do not send your iPod in for service.” The repair is not covered under the iPod’s Limited Warranty or the AppleCare Protection Plan.

Every day life is just more fun with a soundtrack which is why the iPod has quickly grown to become America’s favorite gadget. The iPod has proven fairly tough in light of the amount of use most endure on a daily basis. However, should your iPod ever need repair there are do-it-yourself kits and iPod repair specialists that can help you get your iPod back on track in no time.

Tips for Troubleshooting and Repairing the Top Three iPod Repairs

Gadgets and Gizmos No Comments

There are two ways to handle just about any repair for your iPod. You can either repair iPod yourself using a Do-It-Yourself Kit, or have a professional iPod technician complete and guarantee the work for you. Read about the pros and cons associated with the top two iPod related repair issues and what to look out for in the process.

Screen Repair

The leading cause of an iPod in need of repair is a broken or damaged LCD screen. Even though the iPod may still work with a cracked, scratched, or broken screen, this severely reduces the usability and aesthetic appeal.

If you were one of the first to get the iPod Nano, you may be entitled to a free replacement. After numerous complaints, Apple admitted that a small number of Nanos (less than one tenth of a percent) were shipped with faulty screens due to a manufacturing problem.

For the rest of us, there’s the choice between a do-it-yourself replacement screen or professional repair. Apple has engineered many of its new products specifically to be customer friendly when it comes to repairs. By doing a search for “iPod LCD screen repair” you’ll find kits for all models of iPods that can be ordered online for between $79 and $149.

Those who aren’t comfortable opening their iPod and replacing the screen themselves can opt for professional repair. It’s important to choose a company that specializes in iPod repair. Some companies offer a free diagnostic check for your iPod. If your iPod was damaged in a fall and you’re not sure if there is additional damage beyond the screen, this may be the best option. Although a little more expensive than a do-it-yourself kit, you won’t risk causing additional damage to your iPod during the repair.

Battery Replacement

Replacing a battery seems simple enough until you take into account that iPod isn’t designed to be opened easily. Opening the iPod to change the battery can damage the devise if you’re not using the proper tools. The battery used by the iPod generally lasts about 500 cycles. For an average iPod user, this equates to about one year of use.

As time passes, your battery will hold its charge for shorter periods of time and need to be charged more often. You can find a battery for your iPod at Best Buy, CompUSA, Circuit City or online store. The service professionals can help you find the right battery for your model. You can also download your model’s instruction manual on Apple’s website for reference.

Many iPod owners opt to leave battery replacement to a specialty iPod shop. Apple offers a battery replacement service for $59, a reduction in price from their original $99 price. Specialty iPod repair shops often offer incentives with battery replacement, including lifetime Platinum Battery Program where you get a free yearly battery replacement for as long as you own your iPod.

There are a few simple tips for getting the longest lifespan from your battery. Make it a habit to let your iPod charge long enough to obtain a full charge which takes about 4 hours. Charging the battery for short periods of time repeatedly can reduce the battery’s lifespan. Turning off unnecessary features such as the back lighting and the equalizer will also extend the battery life. Compressed songs that are 9 MB or smaller take the least effort for iPod to cache, also reducing the power needed from the battery.

Apple has made it simple for iPod owners to make choices about how they prefer to handle their repairs. No matter your choice, it’s important to verify that the place where you purchase your part or have your repair done specializes in iPod service.

Lethal Highly Reactive Ozone Quantities Could Be Found in Your Home

Gadgets and Gizmos No Comments

Many people regard their homes as having a pleasant and clean atmosphere. Marketers over the years have tried to sell us a huge range of things we may, or more likely, may not, need to improve our lives. One such item many people have gone out of their way to buy is an air purifier. Whilst the range and effectiveness of air purifiers can often be great at cleaning the air we breathe in our houses, some manufacturers have been literally misleading and dangerous.

If anyone has bought an ozone air purifier they should seriously reconsider its use.

You’ve probably heard of ozone before. It naturally occurs in our earth’s outermost atmosphere called the stratosphere, around 20km above our heads. Ozone protects us from the many lethal UV rays coming from space.

Ozone its self is a hugely reactive form of oxygen compound occurring as a gas with a very short half-life. The compound has three, as opposed to two oxygen atoms, and decays to form the more familiar two oxygen atom compound. Ozone is created by UV (largely from our sun) breaking oxygen molecules into single highly reactive oxygen atoms that combine with other oxygen molecules to from a triple oxygen atom molecule, ozone. To a far lesser extent ozone is also created at waterfalls and through the high voltages associated with lightning.

Ozone doesn’t represent a problem when inhaled from natures small quantities produced at ground level. But when levels inside your own house reach above recognized safety limits this gas is potentially life threatening.

Air purifiers are not a new phenomenon, people have bought from the wide variety on offer for well over a decade. A more recent introduction to the range has been an air purifier that operates with ozone, charging airborne polluting particles and attracting them to electrodes. Ozone is a by-product of this ionization process. Past experiments have been made using a variety of ozone producing air purifiers that sought to establish ozone levels emitted whilst in use in a range of environments. Findings were that a number of models produced ozone levels in excess of 350 parts per billion, sufficient to enable a stage 2 smog alert in an outdoor environment!

Rooms that had the most pronounced increases in ozone were those containing the least ventilation and a predominance of slow reacting materials like ceramic and plastic tiles. Carpets, rubbers and cloths were found to neutralize the ozone threat by quickly reacting with the ozone, destroying it in due course.

Ozone in above recognized safe levels reacts fast with living tissues leading to the developing of asthmatic conditions, coughing, throat irritation, shortness of breathing, chest pains, extensive lung epithelial damage and strong headaches.

Some manufacturers creating these dangerous domestic appliances have offered yet further danger through poor operating advice. Instructions have been reported to say that the air purifier should be turned up in power until the ‘fresh laundry scent’ is smelt. Since human perception of a constant scent is diminished over time this tends to result in people turning the machine up in power consistently to keep that smell detectable.

With this information in mind, if you believe you have poor quality air in your household you would do best to look at the other far more effective and safe air purifiers currently on the market. If possible try to get an air quality test done, this helps you to know what type of air purifier you may require, since many models act on specific air pollutants, e.g. mould and pathogens, or dust and gasses.

Ozone is produced in harmless quantities by many electric appliances, e.g. computers and TV’s, central heating, fireplaces, fridges and even our cars. Typically these quantities are no larger than the natural levels found outside. The only place large quantities of ozone should really ever be found is in the outer atmosphere.

Various air purifier reviews can be seen on http://www.airpurifierstop.com if you are interested in buying some of these machines.

Tested! Stun Guns! What Are Stun Guns And How Do They Work?

Gadgets and Gizmos No Comments

Stun Guns are easy to use, non-lethal, defensive devices with interesting technology. A stun gun is a hand-held, battery-powered device designed to deliver an electric shock to an assailant. The electrical current is the same sort of current used to run your car or any battery operated apparatus.

Stun Guns are not guns in the traditional sense, because they do not shoot anything or anybody. Their technology allows them to be a potent and portable choice of self defense weapon.

A Stun Gun has two prongs at the end of the device. Touching an assailant with the prongs and pulling the trigger will create an electrical current to go from the prongs through the garments of the attacker into his body.

The pulsed current causes muscles to work super fast, quickly depleting them of needed blood sugars. It also interrupts the microscopic neurological stimulus that controls muscle movement. The results are disorientation and loss of balance.

The complete process takes only a few seconds. It can immobilize a person for up to 30 minutes. A Stun Gun will cause your assailant to lock up and collapse.

The results of being zapped with a Stun Gun are comparable to running a 25-mile marathon; the attacker just does not have any energy left. It is for this reason that this device gives you plenty of time to get away.

Stun Guns are not hard to use. To use a Stun Gun you need simply to grab your assailant, shove the Stun Gun into his torso and shoot. This will only take a second or so, depending on the sum of voltage in your Stun Gun.

Even though the voltage can be as high as 625,000 or more, the amperage is low, so it will not cause any permanent injury to the person who receives the shock. There is no proof that the electrical charge of the Stun Gun has adverse psychological or neurological effects. The effect on the heart or other major organ is very insignificant.

Most models include a safety switch to prevent accidental activation. The unit cannot produce a shock unless the safety switch is activated AND the On/Off switch is turned ON.

Stun Guns will not permanently injure or kill anyone because of the voltage. The technology used makes Stun Guns, at close range, extremely effective self-protection devices.

The Popularity of Blackberry Software - Why the Fuss?

Gadgets and Gizmos No Comments

BlackBerry handheld integration into an organization’s e-mail system is provided through a software package called “BlackBerry Enterprise Server” (BES). Versions of BES are available for Microsoft Exchange, Lotus Domino and Novell GroupWise.

Individual users can often use e-mail services provided by the wireless provider and therefore may not be required to install a BES server on their local network, but organizations that have multiple wireless users usually run BES on their own network. While it can be very expensive having an own BES, third party companies like GPXS provide hosted BES solutions. These are solutions with the advantages of an own BES, but without the costs.

BES can act as a sort of e-mail relay for corporate accounts so that users always have access to their e-mail. The software monitors the user’s local “inbox”, and when a new message comes in, it picks up the message and passes it to RIM’s Network Operations Center (NOC). The messages are then relayed to the user’s wireless provider, which in turn delivers them to the user’s BlackBerry device. This is called Push procedure, where the mobile user doesn’t have to synchronize the data by hand. All new e-mails, contacts and calendar entries are pushed to the BlackBerry device automatically. Device storage also enables the mobile user to access all data offline in areas without wireless service. As soon as the user connects again, the BES sends the latest data. This way the handheld is always up-to-date.

BES also provides handhelds with TCP/IP connectivity that is proxied through a component called “Mobile Data Service” (MDS). This allows for custom application development using data streams on BlackBerry devices based on the Sun Microsystems Java ME platform.

In addition, BES provides security, in the form of Triple DES or, more recently, AES encryption of all data (both e-mail and MDS traffic) that travels between the BlackBerry handheld and a BlackBerry Enterprise Server.

The universal and push-based connectivity of the BES/MDS infrastructure are among the most valuable aspects of Research In Motion’s product. An organization can have devices on different carriers, and connected through different cellular network protocols, all functioning in an integrated fashion.

Most providers offer flat monthly pricing for unlimited data between BlackBerry units and BES, which also enhances the value of the MDS component. In addition to receiving e-mail, organizations can make intranets or custom internal applications with unmetered traffic.

With more recent versions of the BlackBerry platform, the MDS is no longer a requirement for wireless data access. Beginning with OS 3.8 or 4.0, BlackBerry handhelds can access the Internet (i.e. TCP/IP access) without an MDS - previously only e-mail and WAP access was possible without a BES/MDS. The BES/MDS is still required for secure e-mail, data access, and applications that require WAP from carriers that do not allow WAP access.

How to Get the Most out of Your iPod

Gadgets and Gizmos No Comments

Have you every bought something, like a new car or new kitchen device, and months (or even years later), someone comes by and introduces you to a feature that you never knew existed?

Well, if this has ever happened to you; take heed: you aren’t alone! There are so many features and gadgets and settings on today’s modern devices, that it sometimes feels that you need to take a school course in gadgetology just to ensure that you’re enjoying your item to its fullest capacity. So, in an effort to ensure that you’re getting the most bang for your buck, let’s take a look at some of the advantages of your iPod (whether you own it now, or are in the market to buy one).

Some of these advantages may seem very straightforward to you, while others might be an eye opener. Remember, too: you may not use a particular feature or advantage right now, but that doesn’t mean the opportunity won’t arise in the future for you to enjoy something new. After we’ve looked at the advantages of the iPod, our next section will explore various shortcuts and hints for you to further enjoy these marvels of modern technology.

Size Does Matter!

While you’re obviously aware that your iPod can store your music for you while you’re on the go, you might not be aware of just how much space there is to some of the new 4th generation iPods on the market right now. Current versions offer 20 gigabyte and 40 gigabyte storage capacities, which is enormous for most audiophiles. Of added convenience, the new iPods also offer a new music menu, and support for multiple playlists.

The Shuffle Feature

iPod’s shuffle feature allows you to listen to music you’ve selected yourself, such as listening to a radio station that plays only the music you like. That’s why Apple added the “Shuffle Songs” feature - this saves you from having to activate the shuffle in the iPod’s settings menu and then browse through several levels just so you can select songs.

Not Just for Music…

The iPod was originally marketed as a device for listening to music; and this made sense, since that wonderful teenage demographic spends more than the other groups put together! Yet as the iPod has matured, so has its target market. The educational market has now caught on to the advantages offered by the iPod; and this is a driving reason why many people who might not otherwise buy an iPod are finding one in their pocket.

For example, take the case of Duke University in North Carolina. University officials provided 1,650 of the 20 GB iPods to freshmen. These sets of iPods came pre-loaded with campus information, orientation notes, and an academic calendar.

And here’s the most interesting part: the Duke iPods adopted the format of the iTunes store so students can purchase academic materials, course outlines, language lessons, and yes of course: music. We look specifically at iTunes in the fourth section of this book. In addition, there’s also the thriving audiobook market. We’ve come a long, long way from a binder full of tapes! Now, entire books can be downloaded onto an iPod, and enjoyed on the go.

These audiobooks include everything from young fiction to romance, from business books to self-help, and everything in between.

So if you’re currently using your iPod just for music - or that’s what you plan to do when you buy one - remember that it can indeed be used for so much more.

The probability of facing hostility and violence in our daily lives is a lot higher than most people envision. We all want to feel as safe, confident and secure in our lives as possible and personal alarms can help you to do that.

There are many different types of alarms out there. Choosing the right alarm can sometimes be tricky. Read on for suggestions and tips on how to obtain the right alarm for you.

The Objective of a Personal Safety Alarm

The objective of a Personal Safety Alarm is to shock and disorientate an attacker, giving you vital seconds to get away. They are not designed to immobilize or scare off the attacker. Personal alarms are not primarily used to attract the attention of passers by; there may not actually be anyone within earshot. They also do not necessarily encourage people to help.

Key Features:

The most significant element of an alarm is the sound it emits. This sound needs to be as loud and as high-pitched as possible. Ideally, it also needs to be dissimilar to those usually heard such as automobile alarms, police sirens, etc. Most experts concur; the most successful sound is constant shriek and over 130 decibels, not a sound we usually hear; thus making the alarm better able to shock and disorientate

A personal alarm needs to be simple to carry, but it is important to take into account whether a very lightweight and small alarm will be as loud as you need it to be (and whether it will get lost at the bottom of your bag). Some small alarms can, in spite of everything, be very loud, although the sound may not last for very long. They can be easier to handle for some people. The best compromise is in an alarm that can fit without difficulty into the palm of your hand, but is still very loud (even if perhaps it is not as small and dainty as you would like).

Ease of use also is also a consideration: how would you operate the alarm in an urgent situation? There are numerous different ways to activate different types of alarms, including push caps, push buttons and pull out pins. How awkward is it to locate the button and activate it? Do you have problems using your hands or fingers? If so, perhaps you might need to use both hands. As an alternative, are you able to operate it purely by pushing it against something else?

Important:

Remember, a personal safety alarm should be just one part of your personal safety strategy. There are many other ways you can help yourself avoid violence and aggression. Once you have set off your alarm, leave the situation as rapidly as you can, moving to a busy spot if possible. There is no need to wait and make sure that your alarm has had the desired effect. Just go.

Video Surveillance Technology Explained - A Primer

Gadgets and Gizmos No Comments

The technology in video surveillance equipment is used in many ways for the advantage of society as a whole. The technology is used to investigate, among other things, the workload amongst pilots and air-traffic controllers, assessment of driver reactions to warning devices at railroad crossings, and studies of the performance of sleep-deprived locomotive engineers, just to name a few. The equipment includes video cameras, digital video recorders, digital video cameras, and CCTV [closed circuit TV] video cameras.

Events such as the 9-11 terrorist attack in the United States of America and the ever present threat of more terror attacks has resulted in video surveillance equipment becoming more popular than any time before.

This equipment and technology is used in various different portions of society including government agencies, security agencies, companies and businesses, schools, and public and private transportation vehicles.

Video surveillance apparatus is also a welcomed technology in places where around the clock human supervision is needed but not viable. As an example, the New York City Transit system [including the subway, tunnel and bridge authorities] uses video surveillance equipment for monitoring below ground traffic and stations.

There are many components to video surveillance equipment technology such as cameras, software, digital image cameras, infrared sensors, monitors and so on.

Surveillance technology has become an invaluable apparatus for business when it is correctly used. It can lessen the liability and workers’ compensation premiums. It can help identify fraudulent insurance claims, and may help in the deterrence and apprehension of dishonest workers and customers. Present-day technology by the way of computer networks and the Internet additionally provides the capability to observe a business concern remotely from home or other locations.

There are many varieties of cameras and digital video recorders made for a variety of applications. Examples of these are entrance and exit cameras, cash register and counter cameras, internal cameras, outdoor cameras, etc. along with digital video recorders [DVRs] and [VCRs] are the main components of a digital video surveillance system.

Prices for the equipment standard for a four camera digital video recording system for a small retail or office type business can cost at least several thousands of dollars plus the cost of labor of installation. As you might expect medium, large and project level businesses will need to spend proportionately more to satisfy their individual security requirements.

Whatever expenses incurred in buying video surveillance equipment merits the effort and expense. This is because this technology not only reduces the cost of security but also helps in curbing crime and vandalism. There are very few companies, which do not use video surveillance equipment for some purpose or the other. Total sales in video surveillance technology are on the increase. They will continue to do so due to the effectiveness and versatility of this technology.

Explained! Pepper Spray Or Stun Guns For Personal Defense?

Gadgets and Gizmos No Comments

If you are serious about self-defense and are not able nor do you have the time to learn any of the martial arts, personal defense technology is the route to go. You want to take a non-lethal approach. In doing so, you will have a choice between only a few items that can stop an attacker in his/her tracks.

It is important you understand that you have a right to protect yourself and those you love. This is a basic right for all humankind. Moreover, you should be able to act on a moments notice. We urge you, do not become another victim…fight back!

Option One: Stun Guns

Stun Guns will stop most people. They should be at least 400,000 volts or more. Some people can take quite a jolt, and keep on coming. The effectiveness of the device depends on what part of the body the Stun Gun contacts.

A strong Stun Gun [they go up to 750,000 volts] can drop a large man in seconds. The muscles twitch uncontrollably, but the voltage is not lethal. To be most effective you would contact the upper part of the body, on the torso. You will have time to either get away, or further subdue the attacker. For the Stun Gun to work you have to be at least an arms length from your attacker. If there is more than one attacker, you will have to be in close contact with each of them, in order to stop the attack.

Option Two: A TASER

A TASER disables an attacker in a similar fashion with one major difference. With A TASER, you do not have to be as close to the attacker as you would with a Stun Gun. This is because a TASER shoots out two electronic darts attached to wires that would bring down just about any man. The TASER only holds one shot, after that it functions only as a stun gun.

Option Three: Pepper Spray

Pepper Sprays [such as MACE] are extremely effective in ending an attack. Pepper Sprays come in a several different strengths, but believe me; you would not like to be sprayed by any of them. Pepper Sprays devices also come in different sizes and different styles.

What is the difference and advantage of using Pepper Sprays?

You can use Pepper Sprays at a distance, and you can be effective with several attackers at one time; you can spray a whole gang at one time with some of these in large spray canisters. One must understand the operation of using Pepper Spray and the limitations. For example, a drawback with Pepper Sprays is that, if using outdoors, you have to be careful not to spray into the wind. It will come back in your face, and you will be very sorry. There is no problem with spray-back if you use the spray indoors.

You can also buy combo Stun Guns. These are Stun Guns with built in Pepper Spray. Now you can first Pepper Spray, and if needed…you can stun the attacker. A bad combination if you are a criminal.

All these methods work well in the situations as described above. Nevertheless, there is one thing you must remember. It is ALWAYS better to keep a distance from an attacker. This is most successfully done with Pepper Spray.

Take Your Projector Anywhere With You! Don’t Leave Home WIthout It!

Gadgets and Gizmos No Comments

Projectors are an indispensable part of every seminar, presentation or meeting. There are innumerable ranges of projectors offered in the market and potential buyers face a dilemma of choosing from the overwhelming array of features and options. There is always a list of key-features which may govern the requirements and demands of every customer and these needs are to be considered before purchasing any projector.

The most basic and the key specification features of portable projectors are Resolution, Luminosity, Dimensions, Room and Computer Connectivity and additional high-end classification like Contrast Ratio, Aspect Ratio etc. A novice buyer would only need to look at the fundamentals key parameters to choose the correct projector.

The resolution of a projector is measured by the number of pixels which are projected onto the screen or more specifically by the number of horizontal and vertical pixels in the image. The greater the number of pixels results in a comparatively tighter packing of pixels on the screen and thus a relatively smoother or finer display of the image. The generalized terms used to refer to the pixel resolution on the screen by the different configurations are - VGA (640×480 pixels), SVGA (800×600 pixels) Standard, XGA (1024×768 pixels), high resolution which is the build technology in laptops, SXGA (1280×1024) mostly used for CAD, GIS and other special graphic applications and UXGA (1600×1280) large format. The projector should match the number of screen pixels on the laptop computer which is driving the projector to ensure the best projection display on the wide screen.

The luminosity factor of the projector is the brightness or the quantity of light projected onto the screen which is measured in terms of an international ANSI standard called Lumens. The visibility factor of the displayed image is directly proportional to the luminosity in a way so that higher luminosity results in a brighter and more clearly visible image and similarly, a greater number of Lumens are required for image projection in case of a greater distance between the projector and the screen. Typically, a projector supporting a minimum 1000 lumens is required to project at a distance of 20 feet.

The dimensions and weight factor of a projector would be decided by the place where the projection is done. The roadside or constantly movable projections demands a small and a lightweight projector between 6 and 10 pounds. Also available are ultra portable projectors which weigh between 2 and 6 pounds. The projector comes with a robust and sturdy case to keep it safe in case of moving and transferring.

The room where the projection is held should comply with certain regulations to portray a projected image and similarly the type of the projector also depends on the room specification. For example, the lighting facilities in the room, the size of the room governs the amount of lumens to ensure the image brightness and its clarity. The lightning in the room would be made keeping in mind the requirements of the target audience and their needs. The setup of the projector and the screen should be made according to these factors and experimentation with the projection and distance between the screen and projector, lightning, etc should be done earlier to ensure a perfect presentation.

The connectors of the projector should be compatible with the laptop computer used with it and can be checked in the “full specification” section of the projector information book. The common connector’s features are the number of pins on the interface cables - 15-pin, VGA, S-Video, RCA, etc.

How To Put Movies And Videos Into Your iPod Video

Gadgets and Gizmos No Comments

Apple recently surprised the market with its new iPod video, also know as the last generation of iPods. This powerful new gadget doesn’t just play music; it plays videos and photos as well and serves to be an all-in-one portable entertainment platform for the market. The new video function is a great addition but many owners will require some technical help to put videos into the iPod.

Firstly, you should know that the iPod can play H.264 / MPEG-4 encoded videos with AAC audio tracks. Due to this fact, the resolution is rather limited, together with the limitation of the bit rates that you can use on the device.

For the new iPod video, this limits means (for the H.264 video) up to up to 768 Kbps, 320 x 240 and 30 frames per second. For the MPEG-4 video, the limits are up to 2.5 mbps, 480 x 480 and the same 30 frames per second. Even more, the AAC audio bit rate is around 160 Kbps. After establishing these limits, the next step is to establish the source of the video, which can be either from a DVD or a video of the computer.

As the company Apple claims, in a purely informative ad which is posted on the official website, that the new iPod video can store 25,000 photos, 15,000 songs and not less than 150 hours of video.

The first thing you need to do to put a DVD video into the iPod is to insert the DVD in the device. After this, you should open (in case it doesn’t immediately open by itself) the DVD, using file and open DVD from the menu. Check the options in the DVD menu, to set up everything as you like, meaning language, subtitles or chapters.

Begin playing the movie, using the DVD menu to navigate. When the movie begins, you should press the record button and select the folder in which you want to store the recorded files. When you want to end the recording, simply click the stop button and if the recording goes well, there will be a screen confirmation that you have converted your file successfully.

If you wish to convert a video from your computer to your iPod video, then the first thing that you should do is go to the menu file and click open video file. At this point, your video will begin to play and you can adjust the video however you like.

Also, you can set the perfect moment to start the recording, using the bottom playback controls. When you decided this, click the button record and feel free to stop it at any time. After recording, just like in the case of importing videos from a DVD device, there will be a message on the screen saying that everything went on successfully.

If done correctly, the movies and videos will be stored properly in your iPod video for your portable entertainment. However do be aware that the iPod offers limited space and resolution, which means that you should decide carefully what to keep and what to erase.

The new iPod video is an innovative and feature-rich product that combines music with videos, offering for the first time, the possibility of playing video on such a small digital device.

Buying a Listening Device For Your Audio Book

Gadgets and Gizmos No Comments

Listening to audio books has become a regular pastime for ever-increasing numbers of people. Many portable audio device suppliers now provide consumers with technologically adept portable listening devices that more easily accommodate audio book aficionados.
When you get hooked on audio books (and you will), you will want to have a device that provides the very best in portability, style, capacity, memory, battery life and, of course, price.

Portability:
Initially the size of a portable listening device may not have much significance for you, however as with most digital technology, smaller is often better. Plus, you want a unit that is light and easy to carry since you will probably want to have it accessible at all times.

Try to select a device that is small enough to accommodate your preferences while not scrimping on screen quality. Some versions come equipped with clip on straps or that can be carried in a shirt pocket. After all, the whole idea of purchasing a portable device is, well, its portability.

Style:
Portable listening devices equipped with a click wheel are more readily adaptable to audio books than other models. You will want to choose a device that allows easy and rapid scrolling capabilities so navigating backwards and forwards through various parts of the book is performed with ease. Shuffling devices do not have that capability and since linear structure plays such a big role in audio book reading, you will probably be happier with a less random method of selection.

Style is a completely personal, so you should choose a unit that is easy to carry and appeals to you visually.

Memory:
Do not confuse portability with capacity. Always look for a portable device with the largest memory capabilities. You will want to store other digital information such as podcasts, music, photographs and contacts in addition to your favorite audio books, so adequate memory is important. Most new devices come with anywhere between one and four gigabytes of space, which is generally plenty for the average listener.

Battery Life:
It is still surprising to realize that despite the technology advanced strides being made daily, manufacturers of batteries seem to be a step shy of reaching the top rung of the ladder. Your best bet is to obtain a device with the longest possible batter available and make sure it comes bundled with a convenient recharging method.

Price:
Prices vary from one manufacturer and distribution outlet to another. Traditionally, prices drop on particular models when a newer version hits the shelves. Most good portable listening devices retail from $150 USD and up, but just like with any other purchase you should shop around for the best deal.

Your choice of portable listening device will ultimately be dictated by your life style. With some research, you should be able to get a good portable listening device that is not only good for your pocketbook, but fits very neatly into your pocket.

Did You Know The New iPods Can Do All Of This?

Gadgets and Gizmos No Comments

The iPod has evolved from an introductory techno gadget to a household name in just a few short years and along the way it has developed some cool features. Everyone is into the portable devices these days with clothing and even furniture makers bringing out products that are iPod friendly to hold your new toy without breaking it.

Each new model that has been introduced has shown marked improvement over the last and they have also increased in the number of sizes and colors available while simultaneously offering more storage and download capacity. The intensity of the sound experience simply must be heard to be believed. Just in case you haven’t been paying attention lately, here are some of the new cool things the iPod can do.

The all new click wheel will allow you to control a variety of functions with one finger, the shuffle mode from the top of the wheel will allow you to randomize your music play and you can operate the play, stop, pause, forward, and rewind all from the click wheel.

If you want to transfer files to your computer from your portable device you can find hidden files by right clicking on iPod and then choosing tools, and then options. Once in the control panel, select view tab, click hidden files, then show hidden files which will then make all of your files viewable. Now you can move music to your computer that you have bought.

A functional stopwatch is also included with a time zone clock utility. The device also has an iTunes control at the lower part of the screen that allows you to fast-forward and rewind as well as pick your play list and add songs to your favorites. A function also exists to allow you to back up and restore which lets you move your entire library. If you have a Mac you can use the preinstalled text to speech program to transfer any document or webpage into an MP3.

You can also perform synching functions from the menu bar which will let you synch you calendars, address book, pictures and more. If you opt for the optional dock you can use it as a remote control for your iPod and listen to your tunes all over the house through your TV or stereo.

Another really cool feature that I like a lot is the audio books availability allowing you to download books from over 9,000 titles and synch them with your computer. If you are buying the unit for a child, there are even built in parental controls so that you can put limits on what podcasts and music your child is able to access. With the all new iPod there has never been an easier way to access multiple forms of entertainment from audi books to photos.

Accessories For Your MP3 Player

Gadgets and Gizmos No Comments

If it’s hard to choose an mp3 player these days, it’s getting to be just as difficult to choose the accessories for it as well. First of all, we’ll start with what kind of accessories that are available.

Speakers and Headphones

These are the accessories that count the most when talking about the listening experience of your music or audio books. Even if the original manufacturers might not supply quality or comfortable headphones with the player, there are many other companies that will offer you some of the best portable speakers, ear buds or headphones. These are specially created to offer you amazing audio quality and are worth the extra price.

Batteries and Chargers

Flash mp3 players (the models that work with an embedded memory chip) usually need AA or AAA size batteries. However, if you’re using your mp3 for extensive period of times, you will need to change the batteries quite quickly. This might not be at all convenient to you and can also be costly in the long run. A quick fix is to use a charger and rechargeable batteries.

Most hard drive mp3 players (the models that hold the memory on a hard disk) have a built in lithium-ion rechargeable battery. These models need a special type of charger and cable to recharge, but they are usually included in the pack when you buy it.

Armbands

Armbands are ideal if you want to use your mp3 player while walking, running or exercising. However, you need to choose the right armband for the exact model that you have.

Adapters and Cables

You need a cable or an adapter if you want to connect your mp3 player to your car, your PC or your stereo system from home. Most of the time, a USB cable will do the job.

Docking Stations

Besides the headphone jack, not all models of mp3 players have other needed output connections. In this case, you will need to separately buy special adapters and cables, or a special docking station for iPod, for example.

The docking station can also act as a charger for the battery, it has a remote control and sometimes even output connections for video.

However, a docking station is an extra expense, as very few manufacturers will offer a dock in the same package with the player.

Bags and Cases

You can use hard cases, plastic or leather cases and bags. The plastic cases are the most used, as hard cases are not always easy to use, and leather cases and bags are trendy, but they will not protect your mp3 player all the time.

Now you know what kind of accessories you can have for your favorite mp3 player. As with any product, it is wise to shop around because you can stumble on a great bargain. So … happy shopping!

How To Choose The Right MP3 Player For You

Gadgets and Gizmos No Comments

MP3 players … there are so many choices! How do you know which one is best for you? Read the tips below and you will surely find the right mp3 player for your own needs.

1) First of all, you need to find out what are your needs. It sounds obvious, but choosing the right mp3 player for you starts right here.

You should ask yourself “What kind of mp3 player do I want?” and “What I will be using the mp3 player for?”

Can you afford an expensive mp3 player, or do you want a cheaper one? You will use it while driving to and from work, working around the house or exercising? It needs to play video files and to show pictures as well? Or maybe you need it to have a FM radio tuner or digital voice recording features.

Find out exactly what you need it for and then it will be much easier to choose.

2) There are two types of mp3 players: flash mp3 players and hard drive mp3 players.

The advantage of the flash mp3 players is that they have no moving parts (they have an embedded memory chip) and are ideal to use while running or exercising. Another advantage is that they are cheaper than hard disk mp3 players.

The disadvantage is that flash mp3 players have relatively low memory, but on the other hand they can be upgraded by choosing a larger memory card.

The other type of mp3 players are similar to computers, considering the fact that they hold the memory on a hard disk. They are also known as “jukeboxes” and have hard drives of 20 GB or more. And this is their main advantage, because you can store much more content. You can play music and audio books and lately display pictures and play video files as well.

However, you need to know that the hard disk is not upgradeable, so you should decide right from the start how much storage space do you really need. Another disadvantage is that they are expensive compared to the flash mp3 players.

3) If price is important to you, then you need to know that you can have a flash mp3 player for $100 or less. The most expensive hard drive mp3 players can cost in the $500 range.

However, as new models appear all the time, older quality models are now available at cheaper prices, even for the hard drive mp3 players.

4) Research before you buy. We often tend to buy on impulse, but please don’t do it. It is very easy to get on the Internet and check the websites with reviews from other users or comparison websites. This way you can find “insider” information that you would otherwise have no access to.

You can even find websites that will show you web sites with various prices for the same mp3 player, and the differences can be quite large. You never know when you can find a really good deal.

Basically, know what you want and need and then do the research. This way you can be almost sure that you will choose the right mp3 player for you.

Metal Detectors to Get That Rare Find

Gadgets and Gizmos No Comments

The first metal detector was invented by Alexander Graham Bell in the year 1881, just after the invention of telephone in 1876. Later, Fischer came out with a portable one in the year 1931. Today, metal detectors are used in many fields starting from treasure hunt to security purposes.

These are electronic devices and are used to locate signs of metal. It is used to search on the ground, people or goods. The materials can be on the ground may be a piece of iron, aluminum, etc or it can even indicate buried metal could be anything from discarded pieces of aluminum to buried resources. These detectors can penetrate various non-metallic substances like soil, wood, sand, etc.

Metal detectors have electronic boxes with a battery case on one end and a handle for the operative’s arm on the other. It has a coil made of insulated wire wound around a telescoping shaft that is inside a plastic disk. The device is held parallel to the ground due to the angle at which the disk comes out of the shaft. The electronic box is held in the hand, the power is put on and the coil end is slowly swept over the ground. If the trace of metal is there on or buried in the ground, an electronic beep is heard when the device sweeps the ground.

The discovery of Electromagnetism was by Hans Christian Oersted in the year 1820. It is the science of combined effect of electric and magnetic field. As stated in wikipedia, Electromagnetism is the science of the electromagnetic field. That is, a field, surrounding all of space, which exerts a force on those particles that possess the property of electric charge, and is in turn affected by the presence and motion of such particles.

This principle of electromagnetism is on which the Metal detectors work. Since the metals are good conductor of electricity and magnetism, the electromagnetism affects on them. Magnetic field is generated in this device through the transmitter (high-powered coil), getting power from the battery attached. When this electromagnetic field penetrates the ground the metals tend to get charged with magnetism. When this happens the coil detects the electromagnetic behaviour and sends a signal to the electronic box. The speaker attached to the electronic box beeps and the operator hears it and comes to know of the presence of metal. The latest detectors comprises of microprocessors in the electronic box that can give you the type of metal present. It can measure the time between charging of metal and the receiving the beep that concludes the type of metal and this length of time is known as phase shift. There are adjustments in the device when searching for a particular kind of metal.

There are 3 types of metal detectors following 3 different technologies:

1. Beat Frequency Oscillator: Such detectors have a coil acting as an inductor inside an oscillator. With frequency change there is a change in inductance. There is a second oscillator that generates a close frequency. The beeps heard between them indicate the presence of metal.

2. Induction Balance Detector: This type has 2 coils that overlie each other. One sends waves and the other receives. The two are kept adjusted so that when there is absence of metal they do not indicate or beep.

3. Pulse Induction Detector: This type produces pulses by putting off an indicator. A coil sends the pulse and the detector searches for echos.

If you have a metal detector, I wish you luck in finding all kinds of treasures. You never know what “rare find” you’ll come up with, and it’s fun to look.

LED rope lights are simply light emitting diodes that are generally quite flexible. They operate using a small amount of electricity and can be installed on vehicles, in homes or at businesses.

Uses for 12 volt LED rope lights are many and pretty much are only limited by imagination. Coming in a variety of colors, these lights are becoming popular for holiday decorations and even for decorating businesses for a reason. Rather than having to decorate the outside of a house or business with a giant string of bulbs that might go out if a single one burns up, the LED rope lights are easy to work with and easy to install. What’s better is they have a life span that can go 10 years or so, plus they are well-protected from the elements in their flexible case.

Some of the advantages of using rope lights to illuminate a room, home or even car include: Wide variety of colors available. ? Shaping possibilities due to the flexible nature of the casing and lights. ? They are very hard to break and are quite durable. ? They last for years. ? They don’t “burn out,” they fade away. That’s right. LEDs dim before going out completely, so an intensive holiday design doesn’t necessarily have to be lost if the lights start to go on the blink. ? They don’t burn as hot as regular bulbs. This is great for rooms where little hands might reach out to touch the lights.

The popularity of LED rope lights is becoming evident on cars, boats and RVs at night where they are used to add accents and to make the vehicles more noticeable to other traffic. They are also widely used in decorating schemes for their stability and versatility. Simple and easy to use, LED rope lights beat stringing up regular lights hands down. Plus, for those who aren’t that creative or don’t want to hassle with creating designs, many companies offer LED rope lights pre-made into a variety of designer shapes. From palm trees to Christmas trees, those searching for decorations might find exactly what they’re looking for in rope lights pre-designed for decorative purposes.

Those looking to buy rope lights to install themselves will find a number of companies willing to help get the job done. Typically, the lights come with everything needed to install lights in homes, on vehicles and more. There are even specialized controllers for intensive scenes.

If saving money and having great design options are important considerations, 12 volt LED rope lights are worth considering for any type of project that needs lighting.

Answering Machines: Whatever Happened To Them ?

Gadgets and Gizmos No Comments

I remember back when the answering machine was a relatively new invention. My parents thought that it was the most amazing contraption that they had seen in years. Our answering machine was large and it had a large cassette tape in it that recorded incoming messages and another large cassette tape that played the outgoing messages. We had a lot of fun creating new and interesting greetings for callers on our answering machine.

Many of the answering machine greetings were annoying and some were very funny. We recorded songs, we took turns creating messages and we always kept things new. One of the more annoying answering machine greetings was the well-known, “Hello…Hello. I can’t hear you…Can you speak up? I still can’t hear you…Anyway, we’re not home. Leave a message on the answering machine after the beep.” Many callers were extremely irritated with the message and often hung up on the answering machine.

Today, you can find new ways to annoy and amuse your callers through your answering machine, especially on your cell phone. There is a site called The Answering Machine that offers message downloads for your cell phone. You can choose from three hundred different greetings. The Answering Machine also offers many other treats for your cell phone as well.

The Answering Machine has a list of the top ring tones for your cell phone. One list provides the classic downloads for your cell phone answering system like the theme from the Exorcist and Mission Impossible and from popular music like Hey Jude and You Spin Me Round. Whatever your taste, you can find a great ring tone for your cell phone through The Answering Machine.

The site also provides a choice of co lour logos for your cell phone. The pictures range from cartoons to photographs to artwork. If you prefer a little movement, The Answering Machine offers animated logos for your cell phone. Many of these logos are downright funny and some are just plain scary. Many of the animated logos are appropriate for cell phone users of all ages but some are adult.

I am going to spend a little time looking around The Answering Machine’s website to find a great logo, some animated pictures and maybe a cool new ring tone. But what I’m really looking forward to finding is a great message for my cell phone. Over the years, I have run low on new and creative ideas. I figure that I can put my creative efforts elsewhere and rely on The Answering Machine website for free downloads that are guaranteed to amuse.

Graphical Calculators: What’s So Great About Them?

Gadgets and Gizmos No Comments

Technology such as the Graphical Calculators covered in this article are rapidly changing our world in many ways and becoming more affordable for the average person. Its worth mentioning however that better technology is actually properly defined as simply a better way of doing something we already do with whatever process we have at hand. Rather than thinking of better technology in terms of computers, hi tech gadgets and such, for example anytime we find a way to get to work 5mins faster than before we have found a better technology to improve our lives in some respect.

Graphing calculators are an extremely useful tool for students, scientists, engineers and mathematicians. They are basically handheld computers, much more powerful than normal calculators and capable of performing complicated algebraic functions. With a larger graphical interface, they are best known for their ability to show graphical representations of mathematical equations, and hence their name.

The Japanese company Casio first introduced graphing calculators in 1985 when they released their fx-7000G. Casio still makes graphing calculators today, but the market is now dominated by Hewlett-Packard (HP) and Texas Instruments (TI). Casio has since focused their marketing on the grade school and junior high school applications of graphing calculators, where HP and TI now control the high school, college, and professional markets.

Since most graphing calculators are allowed on standardized tests such as the SAT, they are a valuable tool for students. Some of the more modern models have a QWERTY keyboard setup and have thus been declared to be ‘computers’ and not calculators. These models are not allowed for use on the SAT, and are therefore not very popular amongst students.

**Running Commentary** - Its interesting to note at this point that Graphical Calculators are going to range in price quite a bit and you really need to first identify your needs and wants and when you go shopping make sure you don’t overspend for features you want but don’t really need. As technology so quickly becomes obsolete 1. many of the features will become obsolete 2. later models will be cheaper if not superseded by a later model with newer features and 3. are you going to actually have time to read the whole manual and understand how all the features work ? (I know I never figure out all the features of any new gadget or gizmo I buy)

The two most popular non-QWERTY style models today are the TI-89 Titanium Edition, and the HP-49G+. They are both generally as powerful as the QWERTY models, such as the TI-92 and the Voyage 2000, but are much smaller and more convenient. Their prices are nearly the same in most stores and generally fall in the $140-160 USD range.

Personally, I am a long time user of TI model calculators and would recommend the TI-89 over the HP. The TI is capable of better resolution on its screen, and seems a little more user friendly. The TI is often thought to be marketed more for students and other non-professionals, and for their needs it is more than enough.

The HP does have an SD expansion card upgrade available that can allow users a virtually unlimited amount of memory, but I don’t see a need for more than the 2.7 MB the TI-89 Titanium comes with. When I was in college I was able to put all the programs and even games I wanted on my TI-89 with space left to spare. Plus, the HP has suffered from a series of manufacturing defects, which though they have since corrected, still has me a little uneasy about their products.

When buying a calculator, it’s a good idea to research what your needs are exactly. Maybe you’re going to need a lot of memory and the HP-49G+ is better for your needs. If you don’t plan on using it for tests and don’t care about size, you might want to consider a QWERTY layout. Is there a specific model your instructor recommends? Are there specific models you aren’t allowed to use?

Whatever your needs may be and whether you are a student or a professional, graphing calculators can be a valuable asset to help you better understand the complex world that is graphical mathematics.

To wrap up our article about Graphical Calculators I wish you luck in putting your new technology to use in your home/work life. In the last 20 years I have seen so many examples of new technology come and go I cant help feeling excited about what I’m going to see in the next 20 years. Although many people seem to feel a sense of foreboding about new things changing their lives in a negative way I must confess that I don’t have this fear at all (at the ripe old age of 40 anyway). I understand that new and changing technology is not only inevitable but in fact is opening up more opportunities for us all than ever before in our history and we should only feel threatened if we choose to cling to the past and somehow expect the rest of the world around us to do the same.

The Holy Grail of iPod Speakers

Gadgets and Gizmos No Comments

Have you been searching for the perfect set of speaker to accessorize your iPod nano, shuffle or mini with? If you are like the rest of us and a mere mortal then the plethora of options can often be confusing. There are so many options out there that it get hard to choose. After all this is the 20th century and the name of the game is customize, tweak, personalize and get everything in a multitude of ways. So it is no wonder that like everything else on the market today there are tons of options.

When Apple first came out with the iPod back in 2001 the only way to listen to music was from a set of headphones. At the time there were no speakers created by Apple for the iPod. This lead a lot of other manufactures to jump in a fill the gap creating a huge area of aftermarket iPod accessories including speakers.

This guide will help you begin to navigate the jungle of iPod after market speaker products.

Fir you need to think about how you will be using your speakers. Are you a traveling business man that wants to listen to some to your ipod in the hotel room and only need some basic lightweight speakers? Or are you planning on having a ton of big raging parties at your parent’s house and want to blast the iPod at the party to show off your enormous play list. It honestly comes down to do you want power and sound or portability. Once you have made the decision there you can start looking for what option works for you.

Portable iPod Speaker Solutions

Altec Lansing inMotion iM4 - These portable speakers are top rated by many indepent companies. All cite that the sound quality is exceptional for smaller portable speakers and the price is great. Typically these will run around $75 but can be found cheaper if you search around the internet

Altec Lansing inMotion iM3 - This is a bit more expensive but the sound quality is better. The iM4 is considered the “Lite Version”. The iM3 features a docking station so the iPod can charge from the speakers and it can also sync with your computer from within the speakers. The iM4 is missing these features.

So which option you pick from these two top rated speakers is really an issue of money versus features.

A few other top rated iPod speakers that are portable are Triton Technologies Sound Bite which runs roughly $30 dollars and is very light and portable. Again you will give up a little on the features and sound quality but will gain on the portability side with these speakers. On last recommendation is Tivoli Audio’s iPal which is super portable yet runs about $150.

Stationary iPod Speakers
This category of speakers can be portable but they often are rather large and bulky and much better if you do not carry them in your luggage etc. However they make a great set of speakers next to your computer or in a bedroom.

One of the most popular yet expensive option in this category is the Bose SoundDock which runs around $300 dollars currently. However if you have the cash to lay down on these speakers you will notice the difference. The sound quality from these speakers is top rated!

Another very popular speaker system is the iHome Audio iH5 Alarm Clock. This is great for your bedroom as it has an integrated clock and will make a great alarm clock to wake up to. Now instead of the annoying beeping sound every morning you can wake up to the Mission Impossible theme song or whatever song gets your body up and moving for the day. They typically cost around $100.

No matter which model you choose you will end up with great sound quality and portability for a good price. This is a great way to enjoy all that music that is stored on your iPod! If you are looking for a good deals try doing some searching online once you have decided the model that you want. You can check the comparison shipping engines and eBay and often get a set at a much discounted rate. Hopefully this will help you in your search for the Holy Grail of iPod speakers to accessories your iPod with.

How To Boost The Performance Of Your PC To Play Video Games

Gadgets and Gizmos No Comments

Many people these days use their computers for a variety of things, not just work or research but for fun as well. You know that you like to play computer games, but if you are going to play them you should consider getting the accessories to make your gaming experience better and increase the performance of your game playing.

Most of the games that you play will be much easier to play with a joystick. If you are serious at all about optimizing your game playing you need to go for a good one here. There joysticks available that will include up to eight programmable buttons and will also include gaming software that will even allow you to program it to particular games. Get one that is easily plugged in, via USB preferably and one that allows for multiple adjustments.

If you are playing games on your computer a good mouse is not optional, choose a wireless optical mouse to get the best performance. Having an optical mouse will help give you an edge over those who don’t have one. Again one that hooks up via USB is preferable, but be aware that since these types use batteries they will need to be replaced frequently.

Some of the console games will require a gamepad and many of those you get for your computer will be set up identical to the ones for the console game players. Make sure it fits well in your hands, look for a USB connection and take the time to play with them in the store if you can to get a feel for which one you like the best.

A high quality speaker system with at least two speakers and a subwoofer are a must have for gaming. I am not saying you have to buy the most expensive set of speakers you can find, but you need quality to be able to get the most out of the gaming experience. The difference in the sound between average speakers that come with a computer and a set of more high performance gaming oriented speakers is night and day.

You may also want to include a headset, especially if you are playing late at night and are sharing your home with someone, or you still live at home. With a headset you can play all night and no one will know, until they try to wake you in the morning!

You must have lots of RAM. That’s short for random access memory of course, and if you have any intention of playing games with intense graphics, and I know you do, then don’t cut yourself short here. This is a simple fact, more RAM is better period.

Is The Swiss Army Knife The Most Versatile Knife Ever Made

Gadgets and Gizmos No Comments

The Swiss Army Knife is a hand tool with a multitude of functions. This knife sports an array of various tools as well as a blade. They are known for having screwdrivers, can openers, scissors and more each stored away inside their own compartment within the handle of the knife. They are exposed through a pivot point action. The handle is usually red in color with a white cross (the emblem of Switzerland). The model used by the actual Swiss Army has an aluminum-plated handle.

This knife is synonymous with the pocketknife. It is often descriptive with a sort of tool, such as a software tool, that is a family of special-purpose tools.

There are various types and styles of Swiss Army knives each with its own tool combination for a specific task/s. The Swiss Army’s knife has a corrugated metal surface with a red emblem and adorns a blade, a reamer, a bottle-opener/screwdriver/wire stripper, and a can-opener/screwdriver.

The simplest model sold includes a single blade. The most popular models typically include a combination of the tools included in the official army model, a second blade, tweezers, toothpick, corkscrew, Phillips screwdriver, nail file and scissors. Others include a saw, hook, magnifying glass, and ballpoint pen, fish scaler that doubles as a ruler, pliers/wire cutters and a key chain. The more recent features include USB flash storage, digital clock, digital altimeter, LED light, laser pointer and MP3 player. Whew!
A brass spacer on the official Army model allows the knife with the screwdriver and the reamer to be extended at the same time, to be used to assemble the Swiss Army assault rifles (the SIG 550 and the SIG 510).

A standard full-size SAK is approximately 3.5in long and .75in wide; smaller models are typically about 2.25in long and .5in wide. Thickness varies depending on the number of tools included. A flat version with somewhat fewer tools (but still retaining a knife) the size and shape of a credit card known as a Swiss Card, can be stored in a typical wallet. Although red SAKs are most common, black, blue, white, phosphorescent yellow, camouflage patterns, and other colors are available. The plastic cladding is usually opaque but may be transparent; metal- and wood-clad models are available.
Founded in 1884, since 1891 the company has delivered knives to the Swiss Army. The famous emblem, a cross in a shield, has been used by Victorinox since 1909. That year, the mother of founder Karl Elsener died the name of the company changed to “Victoria” in her honor. In 1921, with the introduction of “inox” (the French term for Stainless Steel) into their products, the brand and name of the company became the present Victorinox.

In 2005 Victorinox acquired Wenger, the other official supplier of the Swiss Army knife. Victorinox intends to keep both brands intact.
Swiss Army knives are widely used outside the army. They are useful multifunctional instruments for everyday life and are available in a wide variety of sizes and functional combinations. Even NASA Astronauts have a Victorinox knife as standard equipment. Victorinox knives have also been taken to Mt. Everest and the Arctic. The flagship model of Victorinox, the Swiss Champ, is in the New York Museum of Modern Art’s Permanent Design Collection.
